I have been able to do this on my wife's phone pretty easy and all I do it find a copy if CWM recovery (often called CWM all), a copy of update.zip, and the latest version if Odin. Use your factory USB cord and plug your phone into your PC. Let it install all the drivers. Once I stalled open your phone and mount the SD card so you can see it as a hard drive. Place the update.zip file on the SD card, but not in any folder. From there unhook your phone and power it down. Remove the battery and start Odin. Plug your USB part of the phone cord into the PC (don't connect it to the phone yet). Hold down the volume down button and power button while connecting the phone cord to the phone. You will see a yellow triangle and Droid on the screen. From there click the PDA button and find the CWM file you downloaded. Click start and let it do its thing. The phone will power down and you can then replace the battery and start your phone. I usually let my phone power up and then power it down again. After it is off you will then need to hold the volume up, volume down, and power button to boot into recovery. Once in Recovery you can choose the option to install update.zip. Let it do its thing and then reboot the phone. You should be good to go.

Hi Guys-
I'm having a problem with my Samsung Fascinate as well. Its currently running Gingerbread 2.3.5 build EH03. I had my phone flashed to MetroPCS a couple of days ago with Talk/Text only. Now I'm trying to root my phone using Odin. I want to install CyanogenMod, because I ran it on my old HTC Hero and was satisfied with it.
The problem is that my phone will not mount as a USB Storage. I'm using a Mac, however I have Parallels running Windows XP SP3. I have installed the Samsung drivers from the Samsung website and the drivers do show up in the device manager, but it still doesn't mount as a USB storage device in Windows. On the phone I receive the notification that its USB Connected - select to copy files to/from your computer. But, again nothing happens when I select it.
Whenever I plug my phone in the USB port Odin recognizes it, but when I put the phone into download mode it doesn't show up in Odin. I've also tried to see if it shows up using ADB from the Android SDK. Its not listed as a device when I run the command adb devices.
Is there anyway to root the phone if its not showing up in Odin when its download mode?

no...you need odin to flash cwm recovery so you can three finger into that recovery to flash the superuser.zip
Try another Pc!

I think you can root the phone without having to flash CWM recovery, but it does require ADB so I don't know if that would be any help. FWIW, I have a mac too, and haven't had any luck using heimdall (it doesn't recognize the device), although I haven't tried any sort of VM or anything like crossover to use odin on it. I've just accepted using a windows machine when odin is required
Does your ADB work with other devices? For whatever reason, I couldn't get it working with the fascinate, then I tried it a few days ago and it worked all of a sudden. Another workaround is to use the wirelessADB app from the market. If you search for "galaxy s mac" you'll see that you're unfortunately definitely not alone in having connectivity issues with OSX.

very true...ADB is another option to root, but I never recomend it because most folks will have trouble using it....dont mean the in a condescending way, just sayin.

For sure, just thought I would throw it out there. Looks fairly simple actually from the guide nitsuj17 posted in the OP of the EH03 odin/heimdall package, well maybe straightforward would be a better word, just since it's laid out step-by-step.

I actually had problems using cwm... it failed to flash the su.zip properly. So I used the latest version of GeeWiz recovery on stock EH03. Worked fine. Roots every time. #hopethathelps

cant install roms
Hi, guys new to rooting and custom roms but ive hit a snag.
I have acheived root by using section 5 here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238070)
but i cannot install any roms all i get when i select the zip file is a screen that shows the unpacking then it goes to a triangle with an exclamation point. then reboots into normal android loosing everything i had installed. i made a backup using rom manager but it has dissapeared so now i have nothing to lose. can anyoone help.
all i want to be able to do is put ics with very few apps and overclock my cpu
Any help would be great
Samsung fascinate running android2.3.5 with superuser
thx

1. You don't need to be root first before flashing roms.
2. It sounds like you're possibly booting into the stock recovery.
If you want to flash ICS, just follow the steps in that section 3 of the guide you've already been using.

I tried but it failed on step 9/10

So you're saying that it fails after you press start in odin (flashing the stock EH03 package)? What error are you getting and when exactly is it happening?
If you're not on any rom and just on stock EH03, I'd think you should be able to just odin the CWM recovery and install ICS from there.

not sure what the exact message was but yes after i hit start it initalized did nothing for about 3 minutes of the five and got a fail message

And you're sure you're using the correct files and selecting the right things in odin? Make sure the stock EH03 rom is in the PDA section, the atlas 2.2 file for PIT, and repartition is checked. Could possibly be a bad download too, I'd maybe try redownloading the files and trying again. Also, are you using Odin 1.3 that was linked in the guide?
Alternatively, you could just try flashing the CWM4 fixed for CM7 in odin, then three-finger into recovery and flash ICS from there.
Oh and just making sure you're getting into download mode the right way, I personally pull the battery, that way it doesn't reboot after you flash whatever it is you're flashing. If none of that works, I'd try a different USB port/cable. Is odin recognizing the device properly?

ODIN won't pick up vibrant in download mode

Hey everyone-
I'm trying to ODIN my vibrant back to stock from eugene373's froyo rom, the one with latest one (r3 i think) with the supposedly working clockwork mod (it didn't for me :-/). Anyway, I'm able to get the phone into download mode ONLY by pushing power on and holding volume -, I've already tried turning it off and plugging in the cable and it doesn't work for some reason, but whenever it enters download mode ODIN doesn't seem to pick it up. Oddly enough, ODIN will pick up my vibrant as COM6 when it's powered on, but that's only time I can get it to work. And my vibrant IS NOT hardware locked. Thanks for any help in advance.

Just FYI check to make sure, you swtich USB ports on the PC and also make sure you have all the right drivers installed. Looking at the pics, I see that you are not selecting the rite options. All you need is the PIT & the PDA files selected.

yeah I tried that to, didn't work. I used the very first JFD firmware from the backup firmware thread and the .512 pit file as well and that was it, and for some reason ODIN still wouldn't pick up my vibrant. fyi, i was actually able to get it to flash to an odin copy of JI8 a couple hours ago, but now I keep getting a bunch of FC's and ODIN yet again isn't sensing the vibrant in download mode.

Sorry to break it to you but its most likely an issue with your computer. Try going to the local library and use one of theirs.
Try getting into download mode first than starting up Odin. If that doesn't work try it in reverse.
Just my .02, but I noticed that if I have Kies open, Odin wont see my Vibrant... Dont know if that is the cause of your problem or that you even have Kies at all.
I'm going to go with make sure you have the correct drivers installed.
If you don't have the drivers
Hit up this thread for the drivers.

Agreed. I have to do this every time, but it also works every time. As soon as I plug the USB back in Odin will show a com port has been connected, and then I'm good to go with the flashing. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit.

I have also had success with this method. Closing odin and reopening before I re plug is what I have done and have had no issues. Vista Ultimate 64.
I need help. My vibrant is soft bricked. I can access 2e recovery but cannot get into CWM at all. I dont even have the update.zip in my internal. I can get into download mode but odin will not recognize my device. (believe me when I tell you Ive tried it all on multiple computers using different cables, usb slots, etc.). I actually fell asleep at my desk last night trying it all. My question is, can I somehow access the internal storage of my vibrant through my pc possibly ? In order to place the cwm update.zip in the root folder then enabling me to "reinstall packages" through 2e recovery ?
Any help is much appreciated. This is killing me.

I gotta get my phone on a charger, so will have to wait and search for the post in a little while, but another person had this issue, and had luck with a windows software that was like an android file explorer or something. Was able to save all his pictures and files. Surely you could also use it to transfer update.zip back to the internal sd.
I will look for that post and get back to you.
Update: this is the thread I was referring to. Hope this helps. I haven't used it, but if it can copy files from the internal, theres the chance it will copy files TO the internal... Good luck!

REPARTITIONING ISSUE WITH HEIMDALL 1.3.0
Heimdall currently has an issue with repartitioning. 99% of the time you will not need to repartition. Failure to follow these directions can possibly lead to bricking:
Do not flash bootloaders if you see this message:
Local and device PIT files don't match and repartition wasn't specified!
This message means your partition tables do not match the firmware.
You will need to use Linux to repartition with this firmware package. Install Ubuntu. In Linux, you can copy-pasta this into the terminal to correct the repartitioning problem and then flash bootloaders. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17485056&postcount=23

Stuck at Vibrant Screen

Hello everyone,
I have been trying to find a way to get out of the Vibrant screen for my phone.
This happen by me having the Obsidian 4.2 installed with Black Froyo, and I was trying to restore to get the Sims 3 and Thinkfree office because it was not available when I flashed my phone.
I have a backup using ROM Manager on my laptop. I am using a Mac, and I have Parallels installed with XP. Problem is I have ODIN installed and been trying to have ODIN recognized the Vibrant in order to start the process, but it has not recognize the device. I thought I had all drivers installed, and I would appreciate any help.
The device is recognized when I have it in the Recovery mode, but not in download mode.
Odin is super finicky but this process usually works. Plug your phone into your usb port while it's still off. Bring up odin but don't put the files you want in it yet. Now boot your phone into download mode. After the com port comes up in odin load the files into thier proper fields and install. Hope that helps.

if you can get to clockwork recovery, you can mount your phone to your computer (the option that says USB, like the 2nd or 3rd option). You could then move a rom with kernel to your phone and flash it.
I think your problem is you were trying to go from 2.2 to 2.1 (nandroids do not restore the kernel, hence it will hang at the Vibrant screen). Perhaps you have voodoo or another lag fix and didnt disable it?
Also, my noob version in my signature show the proper steps for ODIN, and has a video.
Thank you the process work. I had Windows running on Parallels and it messed everything up. Had to reboot only with Windows though. i just resetted everything until I become more familiar with the process.

Are you sure you are putting your phone in download mode (Three fingers, volume up/down and power button) if so I would recommend a different USB port or, if you have access, a different computer. You can install ROMS on your SD card with a different phone, if you have one (plug into computer and then install to the root of an SD card.)
Why exactly do you need ODIN?
Thanks for the reply.
I need ODIN because I am stuck on bootloop and need to go back to stock or to the GB ComRom 0.2.
Right now I have nothing on my SD card to flash and my computer in all USB ports does not recognize the phone.
I am trying to put roms/etc on an SD Adapter and then flash from the phone?
I hope this works..

Well, to start THAT'S NOT HOW YOU GET INTO DOWNLOAD MODE!
That's the "3 finger salute" which is good for going into recovery.
To Get into Download Mode, turn your phone off (completely off, unplug battery if it makes you feel better). Disconnect the USB cable. Press-and-hold the down-volume button while you are plugging in the USB cable.
Did the Yellow Caution sign come up? Good. You are now in DOWNLOAD mode.
also, if you are this new to things NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER PRESS THE PHONE BUTTON. (only use the PDA button while flashing roms on our fascinate).
*edit* You might want to try out something less likely to eat your phone and SD card. Since you are new to all of this, the CommRom0.2 is not for new people. I mean you no offense, but the leak that that is based on is known to destry SD cards, and it could do other stuff that we don't know about yet. ...Meanwhile, I've been using jt's CM7 for a week now and love it, but if I were you, I would go install the old(er) Froyo-based Community Rom Kangbang2.0
It has great installation instructions and isn't likely to destroy your phone.
Here's a link for you. Get your feet wet here, learn how to do backups and restorations...that's what I did and it helped a lot.

Thanks for the responses.
This seems to be the perfect storm to brick the phone.
Nothing on SD card. NO Computer (tried 3) recognizes the phone in ODIN or HEIMDALL even after new driver installs. I am doing this to either go to stock of froo builds
I did buy an SD adapter and loaded it with froyo roms but the ine thing I do have CWR 3.0 won't flash because froyo roms are edify and are not compatible.
I tried loading a new CWR and it won't let me either?
Yes, I am in download mode at all times on the phone ( the yellow triangle with the droid w/shovel)
I really think I am beyond repair...

you're not beyond repair especially if you can get into download mode and you can get cwr to load.
that being said try installing nexus s drivers...some people have had to do this, for their pc to recognize there device, if that doesn't help there are cwr files that are in zip form..if you grab one of those you should be able to flash the zip version of cwr with your current recovery to get you a recovery that supports edify scripting.
Also have you tried hooking up to odin even though the pc didn't see your phone...I'm on cm7 and my phone didn't recognize my phone but when I went into download mode and hooked up to odin it flashed everything I wanted just fine!?!...worth a shot if you haven't tried it yet

What about your USB cable? LG cables don't work. Make sure the USB cable is the stock or one that definitely works. I have been unable to get ODIN to recognize the phone before, but it was always because I grabbed the wrong cable.
Sounds like a bad usb cable. You can get the official Samsung cable from amazon for about $2-3 with prime shipping.
Give that a shot.

Please Help Me

I've tried everything on this site to root and get cwm to install custom roms. I've done this with my inspire and infuse but the sgs2 is currently winning the battle.
I have the drivers installed and I know how to boot into download mode but for some reason odin will not work for me. I can't get the yellow bar to come up for me to install the pda file. I like the phone but not being able to flash roms is gonna suck.
If anyone could help that would be great. I've tried all the methods on here and no success. Thanks in advance.
Put your phone into download mode and connect to you computer, then go to to device management either through settings or by right clicking on my computer then properties.
There look through the USB devices on your computer, you should find this listed somewhere there
Code:
Samsung Mobile USB CDC Composit Device
If the driver is set up correctly.
If you can't find the above then uninstall any thing that is any kind of a Samsung mobile device, unplug your phone and uninstall and reinstall Samsung kies.
If you do find the above, unplug your phone, make sure the version of Odin you have is 1.82 or higher.
Then do the following in the exact order
1. Reboot your computer
2. Start Odin
3. Put your phone into download mode and connect to your computer - and hopefully within 10 to 15 seconds Odin should recognize your phone

This should fix the problem:
Get the Samsung Unified USB driver here: http://api.viglink.com/api/click?for...13196871580881
Be sure to uninstall kies if it's installed and uninstall any other samsung usb driver.
Then reboot windows before installing the new unified samsung drivers.
After installation of the new usb drivers reboot windows before connecting the usb cable into the phone.
Plugging in the original samsung usb cable into a different usb port in the
back of the computer is also a good thing to try as Dungeon47 was saying.
Good Luck!
Make sure you are using a USB directly connected to your motherboard. Make sure you are using an official Samsung or Blackberry micro USB cable. If that doesn't help, try another port.
Ok thanks i'm still in the process of trying and doing what y'all suggested. I will let y'all know if it works.
Well I got superuser now but still unsuccessful in flashing rom.
Says installation aborted. Ill try later but thanks for helping out.
Did you try starting Odin first, and plugging your phone in afterwards? That hung me up for a little bit. (I'm assuming you reinstalled Kies as suggested).

No matter what I do, Computer will not recognize device in download mode

After tinkering with it for a while, I got it to recognize it, and I flashed it. Problem solved right? well no. Odin gave its "pass!" notification, but it only took 3 seconds, and my device was stuck on the same bootloop that drove me to flash it in the first place. Now, no matter what I do, My computer will not recognize it. I obviously have drivers or it wouldnt of worked the first time. same cord, same computer, same version of odin and everything. I have no problem getting the device into download mode, and I have odin open, cord plugged into computer while I put it in download mode, then I plug in device. also run odin as ADMINISTRATOR. Factory reset also Did not fix my bootloop. no sd card inserted. device is US samsung galaxy player 3.6. computer is running Windows vista 64bit

Ive done that countless times and it makes absolutly no difference. do you think maybe i messed it up when i flashed it the first time (to where the computer wont recognize it?) i used the normalboot img to flash it with odin. when I got it to work the first time, the very second I plugged it in it started downloading drivers. also yesterday I reinstalled kies and all of the drivers.
I installed kies and plugged the device in, then kies installed drivers and it worked.

Like I have said, I have gotten it to work on this computer. I did try it on my dads computer (windows 7 ultimate, not sure if 32 or 64) and no luck. I have reinstalled kies twice now. order I do things? open odin (as administrator) with cord plugged into computer ONLY. then put device into download mode and plug it in. thank you all for helping, but it is starting to seem i will never get this thing fixed! someone give me a miracle?
Dont know about 3.6 but with 5.0 you can only flash Zimage ..not boot.img

one other side note, I can tell it is drawing power from the computer. (when i take the battery out it stays on until I unplug it)
and the file is normalboot.tar.md5 (not img) Im not positive what you are talking about. thanks for helping! any info at all could be something I am overlooking

I can give you some advice.
1.Can your device reboot to CWM? If so,you can wipe data.
2.Sure you have the USB Debugging turn on.
3.Sure that Your USB Data Line is intact and it is suitable for you device.
4.I think you'd better change a USB Date Line.......
Once you get the computer to recognize the device, flash factoryfs from odin

I already reset it multiple times (power and volume up > reset or whatever it is) cannot boot it (which is why I am flashing it) so I cannot put it in usb debugging mode. the cord is brand new and I have used it to flash the same device the first time. after the first flash it will not connect. I will still try other cords (that I will prob. have to borrow, I only have one) I already have the facrotyfs image, so thanks for reassuring krzee, because I wasnt sure.
Yeah I have the factory fs, now If i can get my computer to recognize the device! Will try other computers/cords whenever I can. again, It is not rooted, so no CWM. I can put it in normal recovery and wipe the data, which as I have said, I have already done 10ish times or so.

Did you try with kies?

maybe I would try it with kies if my computer recognized the thing!
it doesnt have to, just install kies and plug in the device... for me, kies installed drivers while device was bricked, and after that i booted into download mode, and odin recognised it...

It should already have the kies drivers, being i have used the device with kies before it did all this. when I turn it on (just by the power button) then plug it in (BOOTLOOP) it tries to install drivers from the device processor (it comes up with some weird name, googled it and it was the name of the processor) but fails when the device shuts off and turns back on. when it is off and I plug it in, a loading circle comes up but never spins. ive let it sit at the circle for hours. the computer never picks it up and it never does anything.
another thing. when in recovery, what is the "install update from sdcard" option? can I actually load the same file as I would use in odin onto the card and try it that way? I am talking to samsung support right now. they say the problem is internal and it needs to be serviced. it has the custom rom on it can they pick that up? it is not rooted, it is stock but it comes up as custom in download mode

if you have cwm, you can put rom(that is in zip format) to sd card and install it via cwm...

this may sound like a noob question, but does having this "install from sdcard" mean I have CWM?

it might, im not sure does stock recovery have that option too, but you should put rom on sd and try to install it via that option to see if it works..
