OTA Update 2.3.6 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Update 2.3.6 is out and I have not updated yet due to this question...
If I update will I lose my root? I am rooted but running the stock rom.
Thanks and Peace!!!

I'll let you know in a few minutes. It's currently downloading 20MB over WiFi. Hold tight.
Update: No, you won't lose root.
Now, I'm not sure what is updated. I'm sure someone will chime in as to what 2.3.6 has over the previous version. I don't have time to dig through the massive amounts of threads.

There are already two separate threads in General on this very subject.

We dont need a third thread on the same subject. Thread closed.

Just a few newb questions...

First off, been trolling these forums for awhile now, finally just registered to post and what not. Everyone here does AMAZING work and your efforts should be heralded and shouted from the skies! lol ok enough butt kissing..
Anyways, I got a few questions. The first one is to clear up confusion:
The first leak that came out from the Taiwanese guy, that is referred to the "2.1 leak" correct? And the March 24th is "2.1 OTA Leak" ? Just reading all these threads I'm getting real confused on them.
Now I flashed the newest leak (March 24th). This from what I have read is not rooted at the moment correct? And with this version, I can't use the recovery ROM due to no being rooted correct? I just did the non root way of flashing it...
If this release does become rooted, will I be able to root my phone if I did the non-root flash?
And lastly, all the ROMS that are out. Are the based off the 1st leak root and that root only?
Sorry for all the randomness of the questions... Some of this stuff is just very overwhelming. Thanks in advance for all the future help/info. And sorry to those that will take the time to flame me and what not.
take a look at some of the links in my signature. specifically the very last one. to learn more about what each rom is based off of, then go through the links in the rest of my sig and the devs that made them might say in their thread what each rom is based off of. to start rooting your phone, if you do get to that point read the second to last link. unfortunately it sounds like you do not have a rootable rom on your phone now so you wont be able to follow that thread, unless you get a new phone and start from the beginning.

[Q] How to update to MR4?

I just unrooted and am on the 2.1 OTA ROM but not the MR4 how can I do this without wiping my phone
Seriously, the dev forum does not need 20 topics full of your individual problems. :/
I think this might be a better place for you to post:

[Q] Rooting latest 2.2 OTA?

Hey XDA!
Quick question about rooting. I recently upgraded to the Thunderbolt from my OG Droid. The phone did an OTA update to what seems like the latest Froyo build.
Is jcase's method for perma rooting still valid after the latest OTA?
Baseband Version:
1.39.00.0627r, 0.01.69.0625r MR2.X?
Software Number:
1.70.605.0
I figure its best to ask before running in headstrong and bricking the phone based on some assumptions.
Thanks!
Yes. Manual method by jcase in the dev section still works.
BTW, the same question was asked 12 minutes before you and many times over the past few days.
Also before you root read over the instructions several times. You practically want to be able to do it from memory before you attempt to.

[q] system update is available icon

A couple of questions Guys please,
I don't know what this update is and is it automatic install if I allow the download ?
I don't think I want the Honeycome 3.2 as I understand i can not downgrade, is that correct ?
As with first question will I get any chance to change my mind with the HC 3.2 upgrade.
Sorry this may sound dumb but I have a problem downloading anything that does not say what it is
maybe an easy answer for someone who has upgraded ?
Thanks
It is going to ask you before updating, so relax.
But if you update by mistake you can still downgrade, like i did(in fact it was globatron).
After download, it will ask you if you want to install, and you can choose no.
Don't know about the OTA. But upgrading using globatron's method is downgradable. I haven't tried downgrading myself (liking HC), but others on globatron's thread successfully downgraded.
Thanks Guys, Like I say it may not even be the 3.2 upgrade, Personally I would like to turn off any of the crap that is checking for updates but I can not find where
I need to investigate "globatron's method " I can not believe a rom upgrade is non reversible, if HTC so desired !

Can I root if I just bought a noteII and it seems up to date?

Let me first say I've looked through the forums and can't find a direct answer to this, so I hope this doesn't bother you guys.
I just bought the noteII yesterday and so far it looks like I'm selling the iPhone5 (why'd it take me so long?)
I do want to root my noteII so I can use the secure setting and other plugins with Tasker mostly. Plus just having full control.
Seems I have Android 4.1.1 with Baseband version I605VRALL4 and Build JR003C.I605VRALL4 (kernel 3.0.31-414933)
Now I'm a mac user so one question is - is there a way to do this through mac? if it possible...second is if it's not how long until it looks like it might be? gives me time to find a windows PC.

You will need a windows PC with the samsung drivers installed as well as ODIN.
Yes you can still root, but you cannot unlock the bootloader at this time because your phone has accepted the OTA - so flashing custom ROM's, kernel's, etc. is out. All the info you need is in this thread to root (if you have a VERIZON Note2):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024207
Use the route66 image (there are three listed to choose from, be sure to pick route66) - there is lots of information on what you want to do in the latter 15 pages of that thread.
stop after section 1a.
Honestly though out of the box the phone is outstanding, and without an unlock method for the bootloader, I'd recommend doing nothing. Too many people have already borked their phones due to lack of experience, knowledge, reading the steps correctly...you get the idea. I'm not commenting on your knowledge, just saying what I would do after reading as much as I could find here on this phone. The terrific devs will come up with a way to unlock and root the post OTA version soon enough.
Honestly the two things that is causing me to want to unlock it is I can't seem to get Tasker to control lockscreen properly. I have it setup to detect what cell towers I'm on and not lock in the house - and yet...it continually locks. Shows I'm on that cell tower, just seems like it can't properly control the lockscreen.
Secondly, I'd like to make GPS only come on when certain apps are open - and that seems to be a root only feature.
Reason enough for me

after these steps, will I get OTA for current security fixed updated?

You know I'm going to forgive you this time for not reading the OP and then the other giant thread on it but come on man, seriously.
If you have a brand new phone and you took the OTA, you can still root. Just do NOT try to install a custom recovery, kernel, rom, etc.
If you are rooted and you took the OTA, you should still be rooted OR you will already have root installed. Again, you CANNOT install a custom recovery, kernel, or rom, etc.

You will get prompted. Defer the OTA then freeze or uninstall SDM 1.0 using Titanium Backup from the Play Store.
You can get the OTA applied using a safe zip made by Adryn...its a thread in the General section I think.
The threads are full of questions and answers on this topic.

People bork their phones all the time. Samsung phones are the easiest to "fix". It amazes me that even with step by step videos people still get things wrong. Life is about living and learning. If you screw it up 9 times out 10 it can be fixed.
