[Q] Application Data restore - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

If I understand the following function in SGS2 correct, google servers back up my application data wifi Passwords and other settings in cloud on their servers.

If this is actually correct, then I dont even need an app like Titanium backup and wouldnt have to think twice about installing a new ROM since all my app data and personal settings will be restored automatically.
But after installation of a new ROM (with wipe data/factory reset) google account downloads and installs all my apps from the market but does not also restore the app data along with it. I noticed even my wifi passwords are not restored since I had to give passwords again, after the new rom was intalled, in order to access my wifi network.
I am on UnNamed 2.1.1.
Am I missing something? Your help appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

yes in my experience it has never saved any of my WIFI settings or app data. Its pretty misleading on Google's part that they back up everything. Also if there is any sort of interruption in the app download from the market then all hope of getting those app back are lost and you have to manually download them (I had that happen a couple of times).

It is misleading and some ROMs also disable the auto restore function. Definitely get titanium backup. Just be careful restoring system data. Usually best to only restore missing apps with data.

titanium backup has never saved my wifi connections or passwords when I tell it to, why not?
"Wi-Fi Access Points" no?

[Q] What does Titanium Backup classify as "system apps"?

Can someone explain this to me? I've done a search and read through the Titanium Backup FAQ and guide and am still a little unclear
I currently have ver. 1.0 of a ROM on my phone. I use Titanium Backup to do a full backup.
I do a clean wipe and install ver. 1.5 of a ROM on my phone. If I use Titanium Backup and do a full restore of "missing apps + system apps+, will Titanium Backup overwrite any changes that were made between v1.0 and v1.5 of the ROM?
Should I be doing a missing app restore on the clean ROM and then just manually configuring all the other system settings / homescreens? If that's the case, is there any way to specifically backup the homescreen configuration? I'd like to do a clean wipe between all ROM installs, but sometimes it's a PITA to set up all the folders and homescreens again.
Thanks!
don't restore system apps. system apps reside in /system/app and usually are replaced only when you flash a rom. so you could overwrite rom updates with an older version.
Any suggestions for backing up homescreen configurations without having to switch to an aftermarket launcher?

What's the name of the application that holds the data? I can't find any app listed under "desktop" in Titanium Backup. Am I missing something?

Thanks...added that one too. It never bothered me too much not having those on a new wipe, but now that I know how to do it, I'll keep them all.

any tips for setting up phone

sorry for the noob question, tried to search, couldn't find anything related.
i've been trying out the different roms to see which one i like. Is there any tips, process or app to use to speed up setting phone, like configuring your emails, contacts, etc...
thanks
Backup your user apps with titanium backup, then do a batch restore user apps. I use gosms to backup my messages.
Also if you use nova or apex launcher then do a backup with those apps.
All of my contacts are merged with Google so when i sync my gmail account all my contacts are already on my phone.
Hope this helps, happy flashing!

the only things that can be setup to speed up the configuring process is in the sms/call log/apps backup restores. You don't want data restoring going from rom to rom, and I've yet to find an app that will restore widgets to the pages that you had them previously.
sms backup and restore= sms/mms backup
call log backup and restore= call log list
my backup or titanium backup= apps backup
I know it's not much but to maintain the way your homescreens are setup from rom to rom would require you maintain your data intact and that will give you nothing but issues/bugs, because data from a rom won't behave correctly in the next, this is why all roms suggest a full wipe before a flash.

Help: Syncing after first turn-on

Hello,
When you first open a new phone ( in my case galaxy s8+ ), you are prompted to enter your google account.
if you have a backup you'll get the following screen:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
In case you chose not to enter a Google account at this stage, and you decided to do it later, you won't get this option.
for example, you will be able to sync contacts if you enter a Google account later, but you won't be able to restore your applications or call history.
I couldn't find inside the settings how to perform this special first-run syncing. is there a way to perform it without factory reset?
Maybe sending an intent with ADB to the app that is responsible for it?
Thanks,
Ana

There is a option in Google drive app to manage device backup, I think you can restore it from there, not 100% sure but I think I saw an option like that on the app.

Sorry but I don't think you can without resetting your phone, or at least I have not heard or read about anyone restoring from drive without resetting. You can install apps from the store and restore the app data automatically after installing, I think the option is in the backup and reset section in the settings menu of the device.
SOLVED
nvm

Device Backup advice

HI all, does anyone know of an app that works in the same way as the built in google backup works, except it saves to a local pc over wifi on a schedule?
The 15Gb cloud space is nowhere near enough for me but I have a server with plenty of space, so makes sense to use that.
I have seen a few apps that backup media, but I really want everything backed up (sms, app data, wifi passwords etc)
Is this even possible with a 3rd party app? My phone is a Honor View, The official huawei app (hicare) does most of them but needs the device to be plugged in via USB and I don't think it will let me restore to a non huaewi phone in the future.
Edit: forgot to mention, locked bootloader so not rootable

Yeah I'm afraid the backup solution you were searching for is one who needs root. But I can suggest something else. You can transfer the data you have on your drive (files other than backups) on your server, it will leave room for backups.
Otherwise you may wanna consider rooting, if it is possible with this Huawei model (that's why I hate Huawei, but don't get me started on that lol)
Have a good day
@flamery
1. No root mode is required to create a backup
2. Hint: Backup to an external SD-card. Use Super Backup app. It's a free-of-charge app.

BTW: To root device's Android its bootloader must not be unlocked. Has nothing to do with each other.
Thanks both I will check it out!
Although I just discovered something interesting, if you change the setting in Google photos from original quality to high quality they don't count toward the 15Gb quota so I just freed up a lot of space.

Question Fingerprint Enrolment was not completed - how to factory reset without losing data?

I am properly pissed off now.
I suffered from a bug where my phone ran out of charge and switched off and my Pixel 6 forgot all the stored fingerprints and locked the sensor. Whenever i try to add a new fingerprint i see the below:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Now i really hoped the December update will solve it so i just installed it and nope, it's exactly the same.
I know a factory reset fixes it, but i sold my Pixel 5 so can't transfer backups across any more and i don't want to lose all my settings and app data again. Is cloud backup as good for that as copying across devices? The backup size is only 71MB so i expect to lose pretty much everything. Did anyone else manage to find a solution to this bug without needing to reset?

Only root backups can save your app data (logins), Google's non root / other non root backups are still ****.
