The ins and outs of ICS on your Photons - Motorola Photon 4G

I am here today to discuss all the possible ways of getting pics on your photon, though none of them fully baked.
1. Of all the tegra . Devices with a working port, the xoim is your best bet. Mainly because the Xoom and the photon have similair boards and partly because the the idea of ICS is being able to bridge the phone tablet gap.
2. We have working cyanogon mod now, and cyanogen has working tegra cm9 builds, if one of the cm7 porters is up to the challenge than the cm9 builds are your best bet.
3. The hardest of all solutions, is waiting for some super hacker to post their build of Photon ICS, unless someone already has a buil going than there is a seriously low chance of this choice seeing the light of day.
But this thread is also here to say that we have very good devs here and should be happy with all the work we have. If you do not believe me take a look at the atrix or X2 forums because the photon blows them out of the water.
Merry Christmas to all and a happy new year!

I have faith in Motorola releasing official ICS to our Photon. This is their flagship phone on Sprint, and I don't see any reason to not get the update.
And yes we have awesome devs that do an awesome stuff with our phones.

Id rather wait for an official ICS build some time next year than a half assed port to be honest. We need few more issues fixed in our cm7 port before cm9 shows its face. Cybik is taking care of cm7 and is doing a very good job. I don't know if the photon is officially supported by cm yet but i know he submitted it. In a nutshell I don't think we should be worried about ics ports yet when our CM7 GB port isn't fully completed. There's still a few kinks that need to be ironed out...

I think this is one of those YMMV situations. I've had CM7 on my Electrify for a month and have had practically no ROM related issues, our devolopers have been nothing short of outstanding. Thank you all foe your hard work!
As for ICS, I have faith that someone out there is either already working on something at least on the side or CM9 is closer than we think. But if we have to wait Gill next year either from a dev or motorola, so be it. Quality takes time.

You lost me after the 3 words/phrases above. Sorry....

Hes saying why cant we use the motorola xoom roms to port to the photon.

why cant we use the hero's ics rom to port it to the evo? they both have qualcomm chipsets????
it was the biggest issue people didnt get on the epic 4g.. just cuz they all use the same cpu and gpu doesnt mean anything else is the same :/

Shabby didnt you dev the one click root?

People possibly get this idea that you can run the same ROM on any phone that has the same GPU/CPU is because of Windows that can run on any x86/x86-64 based computer

Now my reasoning behind this was I looked for the moto device most similair to the photon with tegra 2. The xoom looks nothing like the photon, but it has working ics and has- parts wise-many identical parts and not just cpu, gpu stuff. Its more than a theory in my opinion but than again I don't have a photon (check the signature). If you can say out right it would be easier to start from scratch than work with the xoom, I can respect that but I always like clarification!

make no mistake using hotfixes from teh xoom is highly intelligent considing how much is close.. but joker can even tell you.. not everything from the atrix (our sister phoen) can even be just ported over without some modding.. :/
that is what my point is... VERY rarley do you have phones close enough to be able to just change out files willy nilly (the htc vision was an amazingly awesome phone for being able to do this) and the nexus s and the nexus s 4g are fairly universal when it comes to kernels for the most part

[Q] X2 future proof?

I just got the X2 and it's been running fine for me. It seems with the Tegra 2, this phone would possibly be able to handle Android 4.0 whenever it comes out. With the lack of development, what are the chances that the X2 will just ride with GB until its death? I like so far how the phone is working well out of the box, but in 1-1.75 years when the phone shows its age, I would like to mod it here and there to get some more life out of it.
No phone is future proof. The Tegra3 is around the croner for tablets, and phones wont be that far behind. I would bet 4g phones get the Tegra3, so if 4g is a negative for a select crowd, the DX2 may be the last great 3g phone. It will be interesting to see if they continue supporting a high-end 3g line.
I would imagine ICS would run fine on OG DX much less DX2. I would say there is a small, but possible chance a stock DX2 would die on GB. But the dev will bring it regardless.
Edit: And at this point I am 100% satisfied with everything I have flashed on DX2. What did DX have? Liberty and Apex. And yes a good bit of themes. But the devs here have a ton of scripts I never saw on DX and the themes have been coming fast, and are of good quality. The eclipse ROM has branched to AOSP, so both crowds should be happy. I personally stuck with 2.2 and couldnt be happier.

Looks like Atrix has CyanogenMod 7 Beta

Atrix CyanogenMod Beta
Looks like they've got just about everything working, not sure about stability though. Figured since the Atrix seems to be leading the way for our Photon modifications this might be a good sign that the Photon Dev's can get it working too.
What Works:
Calls and SMS (2G/3G/H+)
Display
Touchscreen
Proximity Sensor
WiFi
Audio
USB
Bluetooth
GPS
Camera & Camcorder (many thanks defer!)
Dock support
Torch
Accelerometer, compass and other sensors.
Ability to swap sdcard and emmc mountpoints (New CM7 feature)
WiFi Hotspot / USB Tethering
5-touch multitouch
What Doesn’t Work:
Fingerprint sensor - Work in progress (not native to CM)
Webtop - Work in progress (not native to CM)

Epic Touch 4g has an advantage over the Photon when it comes to development. Unlocked from the git go and a Cyanogen dev has had his hands on one for a while. Though I love the 4.52" display on the ET4G I think the Photon is far better and have faith that someone will crack the bootloader while maintaining 4G. Like all good things it just may take some time.
^this, plus this is moto's first phone on sprint for android (ok lets be honest real android phone.. not some i1 crap
the et4g roms are all the same, stock deodex touchwiz.. dont believe me look at the original epic forums. there hasnt bee a shred of creativity there since SRF 1.2.
regardless of how far/fast the atrix guys get things working in our current state we cant even get their cm7 stuff to boot and apparently moto disabled uart via 3.5mm (according to the atrix guys) so we have no idea what is or isnt working when things boot

There has been "some" creativity in the Epic4G forums but nothing near what it was before all the dev/mod pissing contests. SRF 1.2 was the last significant ROM with that phone, this is one of the reasons my son now has my Epic and I am here with a Photon.
It's probably been done and I've probably missed a post about it somewhere but I'll ask anyway.... Has anyone taken the plunge and tried flashing the current Atrix CM7 to the Photon?
yea took some editing to the updater script to even get it to flash, doesnt make it to bootani which means its a kernel panic/failure

Ok so I have an unlocked bootloader and so I wanted to install a new rom. The first thing I installed was [Gobstopper] Bell GB 2.3.4 Updated 9-08-2011 - xda-developers and everything went fine except everything was backwards. The home key was the back key etc. So I tired to install the beta of Cyanogen and now I am stuck at the dual core screen. I am now getting the message from cwm that my sd card can not be mounted i was going to go back the rom above for the time being but i can't even do that. Any help much appreciated.

[Q] Is there a specific reason development for MoPho has been so slow?

I'm just wondering why the development community for the Photon has been so slow. I am not complaining, and am extremely greatful for everyone's work on the projects that keep us modders happy. I'm simply curioius as to whether or not there's a specific issue (an unreleased SDK, just a difficult phone to develop for, etc) as there have been several phones that have come out since the MoPho and already have more roms/kernals/etc. Again, this is simply out of curiosity. Thank you for any answers that you guys can provide.

So any suggestions that adds to our current awsomeness..by all means say so....

Are those not still in Alpha phase though? Maybe I'm just nitpicking, but I was talking about full releases. However, I could be just not looking hard enough or am looking over the obvious, which with me, is entirely possible.
Well considering everything software wise should be considered beta(perfect software will never happen). Im pretty sure my stuff is safe. When i release a kernel, i upload from that kernel. I cant guarantee no bugs because not even stock isnt without bugs. I use alpha to scare away people that will brand all my stuff crap. Once a kernel goes stable its the same kernel just tested by more than just me.

All I ever hear from everyone is how much of a kickass phone this is, which I totally agree with. You would think that for a phone with such a solid platform to work off of, the development would be insane. Unfortunately, it's just the opposite.

I don't think this is entirely true. I came from the Evo 4G, and development/roms were plentiful from the dev community for that phone.
While it is a bit disconcerting to see the lack of development for my new Photon, it is important to remember that developers do this on their own time. However, as others have said, this device is far and above, even with Motoblur (which is awful, btw), what most other devices have to offer. There are, obviously, some other highly spec'd Sprint phones, like the SGSII, Evo3d, and the Nexus S 4G. And with the now impending release of the new Nexus on Sprint, I would assume development for the MoPho will likely drop altogether.
All that said, I do wish I had a stable AOSP ROM to put on this phone, with a nice guide on the most up-to-date rooting method(s). I only got this phone yesterday, so it'll be a few hours of fishing through hundreds of pages of forums before I'm ready to start rooting (I'm on 2.3.4)...my concern is what to put on my phone AFTER I'm rooted. :-(
Anyways -- thanks to all the devs that have put something together for us. Joker, it seems that your stuff is at the forefront, while some people are apparently still using the CM7 build from Cybik. Maybe I'll try it all!
Just to give a little perspective regarding software, when the company I work for goes to update an existing device with new code it takes a fair amount of full time software developers and testers (at least 3 or 4 of each) and a couple of months to get something out in a fairly stable state when they are familiar with the code that are updating.
What the developers here are doing is makes updates to code they did not create or develop and lord knows if there is one thing developers hate to do is comment code. So it makes it even more difficult for anyone to first understand what the code is doing in order to make that changes let alone someone who has a separate full time job.
I know your not complaining about the slowness, only asking why so I thought I would give me 2 cents.
Yeah jokers cm9 is running great! You should try it out. The only reason not to use it is the camera doesn't work so if that is important to you just wait. I barely use the camera so doesn't bother me.

I thought I read somewhere that we were getting it in the next month or two. I would assume we would have a good working ICS port at the least in the next month or two. Having used ICS on the captivate, it truly is an update worth switching devices for. However, I'm pretty happy with the I777 so I will just wait. Android updates that were actually really good: Froyo, Honeycomb, and ICS. The rest were just hyped too damn much and gingerbread is the worst of all of them (imho).

For one, it's not just ICS when Jellybean comes out, you're going to get it much quicker than anyone else. And also, it's the purest form of the Android version minus any bloatware each manufacturer puts on the phone, which can be either a pro or a con, but overall, the bloatware has been a con in the past.
IMO, Gingerbread was a very good update, Froyo didn't seem that special when I finally got it for my S7. The biggest improvement was non-broken radio firmware, which had nothing to do with Android version.
Gingerbread had significant power management improvements.

What the hell is your problem? Name one phone other than the Nexus line that has received ICS officially.
HTC hasn't released any updates yet.
Motorola hasn't released any updates yet.
Sony has only released betas (I applaud them for putting out prereleases)
Asus has only pushed it to one tablet (easier to port HC tablets due to HC being a newer codebase and not having to deal with the RIL) and that was an utter disaster
So far, my experience with ICS is that it's not an improvement over Gingerbread. I haven't been able to see any significant positive improvement - some parts of the UI are a bit shinier, but the gapps user interface is clunker than it was in GB. ICS has some good improvements on tablets, but for phones - not so nice.

First of all I said that I APPRECIATE the devs!!!! And I never said that the roms were official. Almost all HTC and LG phones have ICS roms. I left t-mobile with the htc sensation and believe me that phone runs 300% better now that it is running ICS. And by the way Entropy it is no disrespect to any dev by what I said, I am rocking your Kernel right now (Excellent job). I am pissed at Samsung and them only. Our phone is supposed to be a flagship phone so what the hell is the holdup?
If you can't wait then just go get the G Nexus. These questions have been brought up and beaten to death. Just don't be surprised when Ics finally drops for our device and our Roms are superior than most. GS2 surely has the hardware to run prety much anything smoothly and dev community is strong here

This thread is useless. Now on to something more important. When will we get jelly bean? I can't wait.

We may never know. Maybe Moto could push the upgrade to 2013 so we will never get it because 2012-the end of the world is coming! Lol.

I think Moto will stick to the timeline they have posted. ICS has been in development for the Photon for a while now and from all I have read with the re-structuring of Moto Mobility it seems they are pushing to get devices on the latest Android releases. Sounds to me like Google wants Moto to get on an update schedule similar to what the Nexus devices are on. This should not be a problem with Moto not having to support so many devices in the future.
I do hope that if/when ICS does come to the Photon it is a better release than what other manufacturers have pushed out. Everyone I have heard from that has gotten ICS hates it and wants GB back. Of course the best bet is to wait until our developers get the proper drivers and incorporate the missing pieces into custom roms and run those.
Only thing I'm worried about is a permalocked boot loader ICS

Well....I think it is a good sign that the Photon Q is coming with an unlocked bootloader option right out of the box. At least that is what the Sprint guy in here posted.
Samsung Captivate Glide (same Tegra 2 chip) got its ICS leak.

Maybe our devs will manage to pull drivers and other crap from that release?

I would PM Joker or Th3Bill with that link, just in case they missed it.
i don't care whether we get the official ICS, or even the drivers from another phone as long as the drivers are taken, and can be used towards all of the problems with the custom ICS and JB roms i will be happy. Hopefully if we cant get drivers from another phone the official ICS will get rolled out soon.
This is a seriously dead topic that's been discussed over and over and over again. 12 months in a year, 4 quarters in a year. 12 divided by 4 is 3. Each quarter is three months long. Q3 ends with September. Q4 begins with October. Atrix ICS before end of September. Photon ICS before end of December. Atrix and photon = same hardware. Meaning, our jb and ICS ROMs will be perfectly stable shortly after the atrix ICS gets released.
^^^^^^
i was just about to say. Q4 starts in october
captivate ics wont really change terribly much. look at the xoom ics or even gtab 10.1. all used diff camera sensors/wrappers so sure the chipset is the same.. but the crap that is needed for stable isnt :/
unless something has drastically changed since the last time i talked to joker the camera was the last big hurdle?

So if i would have left out that first sentence I wouldn't be an ass? It was a factual statement, not a shot at you. I see you actively contributing around here quite often, I was surprised that a regular such as yourself would start a thread posing a question in which there are many other threads that have the answer. A little reading wouldn't hurt is all im saying.

actually i read a discussion somewhere, they are not the same, cos tablets are based on Harmony board (tegra 250 T20), and mobiles on Ventana (tegra 250 AP20H) and some crappy little difference between them didnt let the devs do that.

Those tablets use a different type of Tegra 2, that's why. Photon/ Atrix= AP20H, Xoom/ Galaxy Tabs= T20. The captivate uses the same chip set as these Moto Tegra devices. People from the Atrix forums have started looking into the captivate leaks for anything, just be patient and wait for the news
Sent from my undervolted, underclocked, power saving Motorola Atrix.
understandable that its the same tegra chipset but that doesnt mean its the same camera module. this is a different manufacturer we are talking about (samsung at that so it actually has a decent camera unlike moto)
Unless you're stuck with a locked bootloader or fortunate enough to be in a WiMax market, head over to the developer's forum and load one of the many ICS or JB based ROMs. Joker's CM10 based ROM is as stable or better of an experience than I ever had with factory.
