Disable OTA Update Notifier? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I keep getting the pop-up notification from Device Management about the update for my SGS2. Currently, I'm running stock with the launch version (I777UCKH7), rooted with my own tweaks. I'd rather not bother with an incremental update and just keep things the way they are for now (if it ain't broke, don't fix it) until ICS comes along...
Can I disable the check/notification? It's getting really annoying to have to hit it several times per day.

I know this isn't the answer you are looking for, and maybe someone knows how to do that exactly...
I would say go for the update... I don't believe anyone has had any problems with it. Me personally: I tried to update but it gave an error and wouldn't install, and now I don't get the notification anymore even though I didn't "really" update. My S2 is rooted with most junk removed via Titanium Backup, but stock rom and modem.

I totally forgot to come back with an update. I followed your advice and accepted the next time it asked if I wanted to update. It began, then said that I was already up to date. Hasn't bothered me again since then. Odd.

2.1 OTA update issues/problems/bugs

Just wondering if anyone has anything (good/bad) to report about the OTA update. Figure this would be a good place to post those issues for the people who are still hesitant about updating. I have the 2.1 v3 non-root and have yet to update. Thanks.
Having issues with 2.1 I can't find ANY HTC widgets. Tried to reload the digital clock with the weather app at the bottom and realized the phone doesn't have any HTC widgets, only shows the android native widgets. Anybody else having this problem, got any advice how to solve this?
I just manually updated to 2.1 (Official) and now my weather app doesn't work. Widgets are ok, just opening the app causes a force close. Any way to fix this? Might call customer support tomorrow and tell them the OTA got to me and it won't work now.
From what I've seen around a reboot might fix that if you haven't tried that already

Haha thanks, but I've tried it several times. Also, the recovery doesn't work with the official update.zip. I'm assuming that it's because the versions are the same, but if it says RECOVERY then I'm wondering why it won't RECOVER like I'm trying to do now. Any other ways to reinstall the OTA?
I manually updated my wife's around 10 am today and about 3 hours ago, she started havin no sound issues. couldnt hear through the earpiece, phone vibrates instead of rings, speaker will not play volume. I have tried everything. Making sure all settings are in place like volume TTY. Reboot fixes it for about five minutes then right back to the same thing. Hard resetting now. If it still does it I'll probably take it in and demand a new one i guess...lol
EDIT: Should I have to reprogram on a hard reset after this update? Hmm somethings not right about that...
Ive had no problems with the OTA. I went from stock 1.5 to OTA 2.1
It seems that people with leaked 2.1 v3 won't get the ota. My friend has an Eris with 1.5 and just got
it but I didn't.

I don't think anyone who is running any leaked version is getting an update right now. There is an issue with the hboot versions it seems.
Don't worry, two things have been confirmed.
First the OTA will not work with the leaked ROMs installed.
Second, the OTA is exactly the same as the 2.1 leak v3.
This was confirmed on Android forum by someone that took the time to compare every single file and CRC the binaries. The only difference was that the leaked ROMs use a different bootloader to install as they did and the actual OS and apps are exactly the same so if you got leak v3 you got the OTA.
The OTA won't install because you are already running it.
if you have rooted 2.1 (test keys) and you downgrade to back to 1.5 any one if this will allow you to get the OTA update? i installed the rooted 2.1 (test keys) but never installed a custom ROM (the second half of the directions on XDA forum) and I still haven't received the update. but I was thinking of downgrading to 1.5 to see if i can get the update.
anyone having problems with live wallpapers on 2.1? or was this not included with the 2.1 for eris?

Unfortunately it wasn't included.
just found out about 2.1 this morning...
I'm a verizon rep for an authorized premium retailer, and one of my customers came up to me today with her eris complaining about all her contacts being gone and her album not being there... her exact words: "What happened??? I clicked the update thingy and now half my ****'s gone!" Personally I laughed slightly, then checked the software version, found it updated to 2.1 and figured the deal. Her sound is working fine, she now has a couple more widgets she wont know how to operate, and albums is now "photos", and contacts is now "People". also required a resync to get her contacts back, but now she's golden.

Quick question about TaskBar (process killer) widget. Anybody know how to program it to ignore certain processes? Like sense... I tried using it but it killed sense every time. Along with mail and the weather process, which I don't care so much about, waiting for sense to reboot every time is a serious pita though...
I previously had 1.5 stock eris. I downloaded the official OTA zip and manually installed it. I had a few issues at first.
1. I had Spare Parts installed and had set my End key to first goto home screen and then lock. 2.1 did not like that setting and so my end key wouldn't do anything except turn it on from sleep and end a call until I changed the setting to just lock the phone.
2. Couple apps wanted to be updated to a new version after installing 2.1 before they would work.
3. Here is my unresolved issue - All my apps that I had installed before 2.1 no longer have write access to my SD card.
For example Astro File Manager showed my permissions on /sdcard as dr-. Reloading the card, rebooting, etc did not fix the issue. Uninstalling and reinstalling seems to have fixed the issue.
Why did this happen in the first place and is there an easier fix than uninstalling/reinstalling all my apps?
I've had the same disappearing HTC widget issue as was mentioned earlier, but a reboot (with a battery pull) didnt fix the problem. Is a hard reset my only option?
my girlfriend installed the OTA and now only the stock ringtones work when receiving a call- she set up custom ringtones for a few contacts, but if they call, the default ringtone rings.
I was running the leaked 2.1 eris rom on a MyTouch 3g and had the same issue, so i'm guessing it's not an easy fix. anyone else seeing this?
2.1 OTA back to 1.5
Hi everyone, I had many problems with 2.1 I manually installed 2.1 OTA from 1.5. everything went smooth, once running first thing i notice I click on the HTC clock weather, and it force closes, ok great, found a trick to delete the cache for weather provider, boom works, then i find out I do infact have the 50% time without signal issue, well I figured it wasn't too big of a deal, but after basically cutting my time in half going from 2 days no charge, to barely making one day, and I've heard that it would just take time as it did when first getting the phone.. which makes sense as it was the case with 1.5, week later not much improvement, so..
I would just like to comment on my experience. It went so smooth, it was in-fact easier to set back to 1.5 than it was to initially, manual install the OTA 2.1... I downloaded the MR2 file, unzipped the file, went through the computer on screen step-by-step process, Took less than 10 minutes, and of coarse as soon as turning the phone back on with 1.5 I see the OTA msg. I'm, just praying it doesn't get too annoying..

[Q] Skipping the update

Hi there,
I would like to skip the latest update, coz' I don't see any real improvement there. How can I hide or disable the constant notifaction icon?
I am rooted, of course.
Love,
D.
Even if you don't see any benefit, there are often bug fixes and security fixes inn a new release. So I take the opposite view, if an official update does not break or remove some needed functionality I install the latest version.
Can't you download the update then just not install it? Would that get rid of the notification?
sent from the largest android phone/smallest android tablet-the phablet
Nope
Downloaded it last night, (to the phone, OTA), but did not install it. Went to bed, got up the next morning and the notification was still there.
Yeah, you are probably right. Took the plunge yesterday and it took me the whole day to reinstall the apps and settings. First thing I did afterwards: Got Titanium Backup ;-)
Btw: GingerBreak works like a charm

[Q] Updating phone software.

So like, had my Bolt since day one, and well, I started having issues with my text messages just yesterday. I hear the recent OTA fixes these issues. So, can I by any chance, update my phone and keep my root?
Can someone give me some details. Im on a Mac, if it matters.
If you want to update your phone I would use the updates you find here on the forum. They are designed to retain root.

Update 1.4.1 Installed Despite Being Rooted

With the 1.4.1 updated looming, I rooted my Nook last week by following the instructions Indirect created. It was extremely easy and I was enjoying root access. Today my Tablet popped up a message stating that it had updated to 1.4.1. I still have Super User access. The only app that is not working so far is Android Market, it crashes when you open it. I am afraid to restart it though. I don't know what will happen. Has anyone else experienced this?
The market crash today is why i came here nosing around to find the bad news. ( it worked last week as i installed the latest vmware VDI client from the market ) Mine was rooted as well, so i can confirm the same exact symptoms.
Some of my other apps no longer work right, such as video playback from esfile explorer, and button savior's "back" button doesn't seem to do anything now. I also had 2 other apps on the home screen that wont even load their icons now.
same issue here.. updated to the last version.. i didn't tried the methods to prevent the update.. in fact i don't follow enough for this
market is uninstalled or hidden at least
button savior shortcuts for "settings" and "previous" doesn't work anymore, but "home" works.. too bad !
I've been to the B&N community website to help .. let's hope for an update in a better way
I sounds like there were be a follow up update to resolve the side-loading issue that got broken, and probably is responsible for the problems you're experiencing. I hope mine doesn't update. I'm rooted, but also followed the sqlite method.
I hope so too. Please let us know, I am interested if the that method does indeed block the updates. Before I go downgrading and starting over I would like a clear view of what I need to do to block future updates. Thanks.
have done it all and recorded it all. Everything posted by the developers work and I prove it on video. Checkit out. Recovery to 1.4.0 is uploading now and will be on my channel in the morning. OTA block using titanium backup works perfectly.
Try the sideload wonder machine. You need the apk file of the app you want to install on your computer.

Rooting won't stop 1.4.1
Unfortunately even with rooting, 1.4.1 self-installed on one of our NTs.
Unfortunately I sold my Dell Streak 7 a week or so ago.

Rooting won't do anything to stop updates if you rooted before, say, late last night, when the rooting method post was updated to include blocking. So... the title of the thread is not that noteworthy If you did not block bn's update apps, did not do anything to block updates, then yes you will receive updates.
My wife and I both have rooted NT's. I did the fix that Indirect posted where it changes your version to 9.9.9 and my NT did not receive the update so far. My wife on the other was relying on the rumor that having the FOTA.apk would block the update...wrong. She just received the update tonight when she turned the wifi on. So I guess this can confirm that Indirect has a successful method (simplified sqlite) that will block the update.
I got Android Market problem since yesterday though I'm showing firmware 1.40 under device info.
UPDATE:
I did an unroot then root it again, follow Albert's video to block the OTA, ver. shown 9.9.9, everything seems working so far. Thanks Albert & Indirect for their hard work!
My wife's NT updated yesterday despite being rooted as well. I thought the OTA upgrade was supposed to be blocked with the root...Looks like I'm going to try downgrading it right now...
I also saw the link over in the dev forum ( that i cant post in ) for downloading 1.40
Who all has done this and got things back in order? I think that when i got mine i *had* to be on WIFI to set it up, which of course is bad since i will just get the 1.41 update and be back where I'm at now.
If that isn't the case, perhaps a step by step for us borderline newbies to get back to 1.40 + no OTA

Just found that link about 10 mins ago too.. thanks much. i'm trying it now and crossing my fingers.
Seems i got a reply from B&N about my complaint just now .. but all they wanted to do was tell me i can download the free app for my PC to read books.. wtf .. what happened to reading comprehension in customer service ..
Albert, I followed your instruction and video and all works exactly like your video. even down to the nonfunctional n button. Thankfully, the interrupted boot sequence worked. Now I've just gotta fix this force close issue...
Mine is back to normal now yay.. ( i cant edit posts yet apparently )
I did have a problem where the 'revert' to 1.40 was not actually erasing any user data so i had a complete mess of things. But, i was able to go into settings and deregister to get it back to stock. Then got it back to 1.40 and ran the root/etc.
Still miffed at B&N, but at least i no longer have a borderline worthless shiny object.

Need some help with an issue I am having with a Verizon Ellipsis 8.

How's it going, everyone? I just want to apologize ahead of time if this is in the incorrect forum. There's so many to choose from and I didn't see one dedicated to this particular tablet.
I recently acquired a Verizon Ellipsis 8 and the first thing I wanted to do with the device was root it. After trying what must have been 10-15 different methods, I was finally successful at getting the device rooted using a (What I assume to be) Chinese root method called Kingroot. They had support for the tablet and actually got me root access, so I went with it. Shortly after, I installed all my necessary root apks and got the device working in what I would describe as acceptable order. I then began hunting for custom ROMS for the thing, but if there was one thing harder to find for this tablet than root access, it was a custom ROM.
Anyways, I've been living quite happily on rooted stock. I removed all the unnecessary bloatware from the device and everything has been going smoothly, until a few days ago. Verizon pushed out an OTA update and now I am receiving daily prompts from Verizon to update to the latest firmware. Now, this isn't my first rodeo when it comes to dealing with OTA updates, so I began digging around inside my system files to find the update.zip and disable it, as well as remove the different processes that would possibly be spamming this update notification. After several different files given the .bak extension and several different reboots, I felt comfortable that I had taken care of the issue. Hell, I even went so far as to take the same steps on my wife's tablet (She has the same one, rooted in the same fashion), and HER tablet has stopped sending her updates. HOWEVER, even though I have taken all the necessary steps, I still get the same prompt on my tablet at least once a day.
Now, I know for a fact the update files have been disabled, because last night I decided to test the update to see if it would actually go through, but it always results in the same error and the update doesn't apply. But no matter what, the prompt still shows up for me the next morning.
The prompt itself is quite annoying. It takes up the entirety of the screen, disables all other functionality of the tablet and doesn't let me choose other processes, and makes me select one of two options: Either I choose to apply the update, which immediately fails, or I can choose to delay the update to a different time during the day. If I could grab a screenshot, I'd show you guys what it looks like. But, I literally can't do anything on my tablet until after I make that selection, which immediately closes the process. That means I can't freeze the process using TitaniumBackup or something like that. I am helpless to suffer these update prompts every morning.
Now don't get me wrong. I'm not ever going to actually run the update, but the reminder is just such an inconvenience. So, I thought I'd make a post and see if there's anything you guys can think of that might be able to help me find whatever is causing these prompts and get rid of it. I've disabled the update.zip, I've disabled notifications from the Google Play Services, and I've rid myself of all the unnecessary bloatware on my device. I left a few Verizon processes on the tablet that I wasn't 100% sure if they were safe to remove or not, and I've even installed the FOTAKill.apk to see if that would help. The update doesn't work, but the prompt still shows up every morning.
I'd be forever in your guys' debt if you could help me on this one. Thanks for the read, and thanks ahead of time for any help! =D

You will need to modify your build.conf to prevent the update screen from prompting you.
Change the build number to something else....
/system/build.prop
Change the build to something like: ro.build.display.id=AKOT49HA
and do the same to the rest of them in the file.
