Microsoft Office viewing and editing - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hi All. I know this is more related to Android but after your thoughts on programs to view and edit office documents, in particularly excel.
I've recently looked at Office 365 but unsure how well it works on Android and a 1280x800 screen, also not sure how much data it will suck when hotspotted with my phone.
Polaris office came stock on my galaxy s2 and find that not to be overly feature full, nor are any of the others from my understanding, in particular excel.
Yeh I know the Prime is not a laptop or desktop replacement but I would probably use it for the odd bit of work if it had something better than Polaris Office.

Quickoffice Pro HD or Documents to Go
Both handle office 2010 files

Thanks for the reply.
But I realise there are many that handle office 2010 files, with none that completely stand out are more personal preference, but they aren't exactly fully functional. Polaris is meant to be reasonable but I found it is no where near deep in functionality. For example, I have found Excel is not useful for anything but very basic spreadsheets.
But Office 365 is meant to be fully functional, but cloud based, and searching didn't say how well it worked on an android tablet

One thing I've always found really helpful is Google Documents. You can create, edit and share documents in it.
Write it in Google Docs, edit it on your computer before sending it. As an online college student, it has made my life a whole lot easier. It's free as well so it's worth checking out
**edit**
I forgot to mention that you can create on a phone but download onto a computer where you can add your specific formatting later. This means you don't necessarily have to have a full featured office package on your phone as long as your computer has interwebz and can get to gDocs.

Cheers. I'll give it a go on my galaxy s2 while I wait patiently for the asus prime
I knew about google docs but not really looked at it much.

Also remember that the tablet version of quickoffice pro hd is tablet exclusive and have a different UI and more advanced functions than the phone based quickoffice pro.
As you said, none of the android specific office suites are full featured, but I think that they're getting closer. Also, they do provide functionality that most users would think is complete. It'll be a long time before you see pivot tables and odbc hooks in tablet office suites.

I found this.

Looks like it works pretty well... I don't have or use it but I figure you could try it out and see if it does the trick.

Polaris on the tablet isn't too bad

I've read somewhere in the forum (can't remember where ) that you couldn't use google doc (the web app) on the first transformer's browser... Is this true ? And on the prime ?
And is there an HD or tablet version of the google doc android app ?

hello, have just joined the forum and am looking to get the htc hero, currently i have a tytn 2. I use office sometimes and was wondering if the hero has anything like office on it or can be put onto it.
Quickoffice comes bundled with the Hero.
I think it would suit your needs.

Quickoffice is the answer
+1
Yeah you can also get Docs To Go in the market but its pricey. Works really well tho and there are more options editting and formatting wise that can't be done on Quick Office. Android Docs To Go only does XL and Word.
Occassionally I'll need to quickly re-edit or tweak stuff and email stuff back to the publisher in Word format and Docs to Go lets me, but I don't think Quick office does, cos I cant save in different formats etc.

You should bear in mind that DocsToGo currently doesn't want to download/install on the Hero from the Market.

Dave
Aww annoying - you can get it from Dataviz tho I think - worth a try if you desperately need it.

Office on Hero
You could try androffice
another alternative should be available soon watch this http://android-unleashed.com/2009/07/citrix-brings-windows-applications-to-android-video.html they had microsoft word running
Screens are from the video
That's full Word running on a Citrix server, which is more suited to Corporate use as most "normal" users won't have their own Citrix server running to serve out apps! Regardless though, I seriously doubt how useful this will really be with the limited resolution of the current crop of Android based phones - it'll be far more useful for Android based netbooks.

QuickOffice Problem
HEllo everyone in my situation - paid app's from MArket not available.. but in QuickOffice are problem with Word document - there are table - and quick office do not show this .. it look's what all file not loaded .. and table is hown as black square with red cross
any suggestion how it can correct ?

[Q] QuickOffice on the Streak

I am in desperate need of a good efficient Microsoft compatible office program on my Streak. QuickOffice came preinstalled, but I cannot seem to upgrade to the full version (so it only reads pdfs). Also when I press the buy now button on their website, it pulls up marketplace and says it was not found. I have a support ticket open on their site, but so far no useful responses.
Is anyone else having this problem? Or can anyone recommend a program for reading word and excel (and maybe powerpoint)?
Another bizarre thing is that a developer (who I sent a message to saying the Streak does not display their app right) came back saying "due
to it's irregular screen size the graphics for the game don't quite fit". 800x480 is not irregular. Maybe the screen does have a higher resolution which is being scaled down like fards mentioned.
Company in Question: http://www.quickoffice.com/
.
Have you looked at documents to go?
Also I think the screen size is down to the dpi, they are using 160 dpi on the streak, don't think that's too common.
Well i had a good look around the tinternet for you and have to say there is not much out there office wise for the android
Like fards said documents to go is one but it says will not support office 2010 so from what i can see the one we have Quick office seems to be the best
Now i went to the marketplace found the quick office clicked buy now and it took me to the google checkout did you get that far ?
I reckon Quick Office, without copy & paste, is pretty redundant, that's a big & basic hole for a document editor, if it was the only option then I guess it'd still buy it and pray for an update!
Hi Fards, I'm about to purchase documents to go, I didn't know it existed for Android. I need it for creating and editing word and excel documents and then emailing them, do you use it, and are you happy with it for those basic tasks?
Regards,
Matt
Thanks for the feedback. It just seems like QuickOffice is the best solution currently out.
For the time being I may go with Documents To Go, thanks for the suggestion fards
@lufc
I cannot find it in the marketplace. Likewise, when I use my barcode reader from their website it says the app cannot be found. The same happens when I press the buy now button on the web page from my Android phone.
My Dell Streak is running Android 1.6 build 3562
Still no response from QuickOffice support.

I have a need for spreadsheet on the Streak and I compared the lite trial versions of both Documents To Go and QuickOffice. I decided that Documents To Go was much better.
Now that I have it I am blown away by its pdf capabilities whereby it word wraps the text so goodbye to terminable side to side scrolling. Amazing.
Having registered my intention to try it out, DataViz offered me the suite for $9.99 which is cheap enough so that I don’t need to compromise my ethics over it. You could say at that price it is a steal anyway - pun intended.
I use the paid for version of Docs to go and it really is good. I have used the word to go to amend work docs on the move and this week discovered the powerpoint viewer was very useful in outline mode as I could access all the notes straight from that view, which was helpful in my meeting as it also means less scrolling
Tbh I haven't used docs to go since my palm days many many years ago, but I was looking at it just before you posted The question.
I can't stand pirated software, especially when he developers work so hard and charge so little for their android stuff.

Although I am a software conterfitting whore for Windows, I do indeed support Android and their developers apps. Plus at such a minimal cost, it is entirely worth it.
Bad news though, I downloaded the Documents to Go shown in my markerplace and when I opened it to press 'buy key' it brings me to the search result for Documents to Go, but does not show the full version
Looks like a may be installing an illegal version after all... Or maybe after I root my phone to a newer build it will be resolved.

I bought it direct from the website using my full win7 computer. This was in response to an email from DataViz as follows:-
"Thank you for registering our Documents To Go 2.0 "Viewer" for your Android-based device. The free Viewer version allows you to view Microsoft Word and Excel files and attachments on your device.
We are excited to offer you a special price, direct from DataViz only, on our Documents To Go Full version upgrade. "
That mail contained a link and I followed my nose from there.
Maybe best to wait for DataViz to respond to your registration after you download and install the Viewer only version?
QuickOffice updated my support ticket saying they updated the installer and to look again.
Now fully functional, purchased the app with no problems
I got an offer email through today as well do bought it, much prefer the pdf reader to the adobe one. worth the 9.99 usd for that, the amount of emails I get with pdfs in..
I used quick office and docs to go on the iphone, docs to go was better. However all the features are not on the android version and I have found the quick office version better and functionality rich (although far from perfect). The main features that made it better was the google docs integration

I use the purchased ver. of Doc.'s to go on my EVO and just purchased it again for my Streak. I use the PDF viewer a lot. One of the things you can do with the pdf viewer is go to a restaurant's web site, download their nutrition info.. Then next time you wonder how may fat calories the super sized Whopper has, you will have it at your finger tips. You can also make color coded pdf/excell doc's on a pc then email them to your streak. Open them with doc's to go and you are all set.
I discovered today that you can't open encrypted files in QuickOffice, but Docs to go (the full version at least) had no problem with it!
When I say 'encrypted' I use it in the sense that MS office uses it - you put a password on a file and save it.

Quick office will not install
Hey guys. Like it says, I can't get it to install.
I'm running StreakDroid 1.9 and Steve has HD installed as a system app so I upgraded to the full version so I could create documents and it wouldn't install.
So I deleted it from /system/apps/ and bought QuickOffice Pro and couldn't get it to install either....
any ideas?
I've wiped the cache and dalvik cache just in case and that didn't help either

[Q] Some questions pre-sale.

Basically I intend to buy this as a primary note taking device for lecture for this coming semester and beyond and I have some questions.
Firstly what is the best tablet office apps that work well with the hardware keyboard? I had a play with Polaris in a shop on the original Transformer but I'm just wondering if there is better out there.
It'd be nice if there was like an automatic save every 30 seconds/minute or similar feature.
Also it'd be VERY useful if there was an app that allowed me to open two files at once. So I could, say, have an editable .doc open on one side of the screen and a .ppt on the other...
Secondly how is the physical keyboard? Like I said I played with the Transformer recently and the keyboard seemed pretty nice. A little bit small but something I could get used to/fast on.
Might add more if I think of them.
Thanks, G.
Don't have keyboard so can't speak to that but for office apps I like Google docs and smart office
smart office is a lot better and is very good sure you will like it

I nabbed the Smart Office APK in the Getjar $0 sale and it seems decent on my phone, does it have a tablet interface?
See I would love to use Google Docs but I heard it requires internet to work and due to the way my university's WiFi security is I'll only be able to use internet with apps that support proxy routing (as Android doesn't have this built in to the OS).
Yes the tablet interface is very nice I like it a lot

Thanks for the screenshots!
Is it possible to have the edit option on screen always/in easy use?
I'll be keen to change formatting to underline/bold/italics etc quite often.
Also, how quickly can one jump in and out of list options?
EDIT: also how quickly can one "tab" in an indent and then get back out of it?
I would say for what you want this may not be for you
edit bar does not stay open but jumping into options is just a press of button
For you, you may want documents to go or office suite 5 I read good reviews of those

Anyone else have input? Specific to my needs if possible
I had an original transformer, just got my prime yesterday.
I used my tf last two semesters for all my classes.
I usually use the pre-loaded supernote app to take notes. It takes kb input and you can draw as well (useful for science classes).
my teachers give us power point lecture slides and for that the polaris office is pretty good, I haven't tried the other office apps, but polaris should do most of what you throw at it.
Some of my teachers give pdf lecture notes, I use repligo reader to annotate on pdf.

Just gonna bump this in the hope that someone can direct me to something that might help me more.
This PDF annotation software will help as I need to deal with a lot of case law etc.
I'm guessing that there is nothing out there currently that supports having two documents open at once side by side as I said above?
Main requirement would be snappy formatting (Bold/Underline/Italic), can this be done in Polaris with CTRL+B/U/I?.
Also the list thing, I know it's not automatic when tabbing like in Word but an easy/quick to use button is fine.

no, there is currently no way of running two apps at the same time, it's a limitation of all mobile based OS's, everything essentially runs in full screen mode.
the CTRL commands should work fine, i'm pretty sure i used them for various things on my tf101.
Are any of these aforementioned office suit apps compatible with odt (OpenOffice format)?

It's not about running two apps at once. It's about one app having two files open at once.
Say a word document on the left and then a powerpoint on the right.
I doubted it'd be available. Maybe it'll come.

[Q] Help with editing App for School

Hello everyone. I am new to the forum. I tried posting this under the Asus transformer section, but due to me having less that enough posts it said I must post in general.
So I tried looking on the forum for exactly what I wanted and could not find it. I want an app that will let me edit any office or PDF file and let me to do it with a stylus writing freehand. I don't want to merely edit and just write in text, or highlight I want to be able to use my stylus and actually circle a word in power point, or be able to write notes freehand with the stylus on the side of the PPT. I do notice that Adobe let's me kind of do it with it's reader, but it just feels really laggy for me. If there is an APP available for me to try I don't mind if I even have to purchase it due to it being used for school.
Please give me your input! and thank you for letting me be apart of your community!
Polaris Office which is included free with your Transformer Prime let's you create and edit Word, Excel and Power Point files. I don't know about scribble-annotating them since I don't believe that the Microsoft Office Suite knows how to display that kind of notation. Also for any meaningful editing you will need the onscreen keyboard or keyboard dock.
As for editing PDF files, I don't know of any apps off the top of my head that will do what you ask. You might try searching the Play Store.

Yeah I tried Polaris office...and I really want to do free hand scribble editing. PDF editing I am actually ok with Adobe as it lets me do what I want, but I really need something else for my office programs, because I am going to use this for school in lecture. I do have the keyboard as well, but I want to be as light as possible with just the tablet and stylus in hand.
I use ezPDF Reader Pro for PDF annotations for notes from my professors at school. I think it was $2.99 in the play store. It works great.
I havent found a good office app. Polaris Office, though it came on the prime free, is buggy and is limited on formatting. It works great for basic docs. You can only save in .doc format and docs i have created sometimes look way different when opened on a computer. But it does work.
I am still looking for the best app for an Office suite on android. Although SoftMaker Office mobile is coming along great. It is in beta still.
Find it at the following:
www.softmaker.net/down/TestMaker.apk for word
www.softmaker.net/down/PlanMaker.apk for excel
www.softmaker.net/down/Presentations.apk for powerpoint
Have you tried using the dedicated writing programs for use with the stylus already (just to see if you can even tolerate writing with the Prime)? Even with the apps to improve the TFP's response to stylus input they're still not something that's even remotely efficient to take notes with. If you just want to draw arrows or circle things or make quick (but relatively large) drawings, it's okay.
I generally annotated my pdfs using Repligo reader. I could do light annotations with the stylus and enter comments in stickies. You could easily convert powerpoints into pdfs and comment on them that way.
As far as I know there isn't any Office app that supports inking yet, which isn't that odd since most suites can't even do basic tasks like display charts properly in Excel and Powerpoint.
IMHO, Android is still pretty abysmal when it comes to doing this sort of thing.
The official adobe reader app lets you scribble annotate straight out of the box. I use it regularly
Office Pro 6
I don't know if it will solve your issues, but Office Pro 6 is on sale at the Amazon App store for $.99. It's normally $15.
http://www.amazon.com/Mobile-Systems-Inc-OfficeSuite-Professional/dp/B0051UP5NQ/ref=mas_6pack_productivity_Suite_link?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-5&pf_rd_r=054VF38RVZ32RE41XXGQ&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1371696742&pf_rd_i=2350149011
I think it's better than Polaris, especially on spreadsheets.
BTW first off let me thank all of you for your responses! I did know about adobe having its native edit and I had stated above I was fine with that . Although on the other hand, the power point is the BIGGEST one I have an issue with. Although punitenshu I like your idea the most which is just to convert it over to PDF...I just didn't want to do that every time I received a new lecture.....Thank you everyone you have been such a big help!
Repligo Reader hands down. If you really fussy about accuracy, use it in conjunction with touchscreen tuner.

QuickOffice Pro HD

Hi all, don't know if this is a question or just a statement, leaning towards the latter:
Has anyone noticed that this device may come with a reader built in? I saw that you could launch with Adobe Reader, but when clicking around in Dropbox, suddenly I was able to use the QuickOffice Pro HD app to view things. I understand why this device would need this app, but when looking in Google Play, it doesn't seem to show up as purchased (and it's kind of confirmed in device with the fact that you cannot launch the app independently).
Another thought: I've only tested with PDFs launched from dropbox, that may be the reason. Maybe this is another reason to use dropbox? Unsure, but very curious feature, may affect how people would treat device (especially since I cannot zoom in and out of standard Adobe Reader, which is driving me nuts).
Back to studying for midterm in 8 hours, any thoughts? :fingers-crossed:
I also noticed this when using Google drive. I opened a .doc file and it used quick office to display the file (in read only mode). As you, I don't have quick office installed.

Not that this helps much but I just opened a file n dropbox and they gave me the choice of what program to use and quick office was on the list and it worked great. I didn't download it either.
Google bought QuickOffice and probably working to implement it fully into the Android maybe. That is interesting it doesn't show up anywhere else. I love using Quick office HD in my Infinity and is my go to productivity software.
QuckOffice was acquired by Google a while back....
http://www.quickoffice.com/google_acquires_quickoffice/
So it may be a part of the OS install, it doesn't show in the app drawer but it shows under apps/all in the system menu.
This is great news. Work is buying me an N10 so I will need something that can edit Office documents. I was considering buying Quickoffice.
I noticed this when I tried to backup QuickOffice Pro in Titanium Backup.
