Im so pissed right now, thats impossible to describe. or i am the unluckiest person in the world, or this glass is a ****.
Ok, i carried the phone in my pocket without screen protector for a month, no scrachs, but now, the FIRST TIME! the phone fell down.. from about 1 meter AT MOST, on a stone floor...
IT SMASHED IN ONE THOUSAND PIECES!
how can a 100gr phone have the power to in 1meter, smash an "almost" indestructible glass? what the **** was that?
if it was scrashed, if it EVEN got a damage on the screen, but one thousand pieces?
Not to mention that i got an Otterbox...
Well im now thinking in taking a new phone, gona fix this one first.
any sugestions of a better phone? dont say sgs2, needs to be now

I agree with jamesd, it is like a windshield on a car, it will not shatter. Also, Gorilla glass is not indestructible, just much harder to scratch and break. go look at the website!
is there a possible it can be a refurb w/o gorila glass? gonna try to find the cam now, if i cant, i will take some pics tomorrow with my girlfriend phone

You mean just for cost reasons? Its not indestructible, but theres no doubt its better than regular glass.
Cant be scrached doesnt mean it cant be shattered. It all depends on the material's physical property. Nexus s would be ur best bet for t mobile or vibrant 4g

Gorilla Glass is much stronger than regular glass but is not unbreakable. It's strength also depends on how thick it is, which varies from one application to the next. If Samsung used a thinner layer either because of expense or to keep the device thinner, it may explain why these screens tend to shatter pretty easily. I will say that I've had my phone for 6 months, have never used a screen protector, and don't have a single scratch anywhere on the screen.

the problem is that i not live in us, and this phone doesnt have support by samsung here, so i will have to buy the lcd+digitizer and fix it myself, ending in about 130 usd

I see friends phones with the screen protectors on them and no matter how good of a job you do a screen protector looks like ****!

Dude get the nexus s, roms and over clocks are gonna be sick. plus they curved the screen a bit, so if it falls, the edges of the phone hit the floor instead of the screen.
Gorilla glass is scratch proof but not more resistant the breakage. And the fact that the glass is end to end, an impact on the side can travel to the side of the glass, where its most susceptible to breaking into pieces, like it happened to you...
I did throw my phone twice on the wall out of anger, didn't happen to my phone luckily... Ur drop must be a peculiar type directly at the weakest point... Silicon cases, ur best bet next time... I had one on when I threw the phone...

Dude, Gorilla glass is a mix-design that makes the glass surface very hard and the material 3 times more flexible than normal glass........BUT.... it still is glass and if you drop any glass and it hits just right .....the glass breaks. Since this type of glass is also a tempered variety when it breaks it shatters.
Me ? I have dropped my phone from 10 feet and nothing so, I ll chalk it up to you being lucky........or unlucky I should say............

You threw you vibrant not one but two times on the wall and still it survived while this guy only dropped it once and always kept it safe yet had it shatter to pieces with the first unfortunate accident.

It's only been a month since I bought my S3. I have 5-6 very tiny scratches on my screen which are easily visible in bright light. :crying:
It's like a group of scratches at the bottom center of my screen. I am still trying to figure out how I got them. I can assure you that I am not responsible for these scratches. :crying:
I have treated my phone with respect and yet it has developed these scratches. I have never dropped my phone. I have never kept it face-down on any surface.
The funny part is that the back cover on the Samsung Galaxy S3 sucks as well. Its got tiny scratches all over even though I have never ever kept the phone on any surface without keeping a micro-fiber cloth under the phone!
The only possible explanation for the scratches can be dust. Can I claim warranty on the phone since the screen is supposed to be scratch resistant?
I am super sad now
A few fine sand particles against the glass in a pocket will do more than two sets of keys.

Normal glass won't even scratch if you take a key to it. Sand particles are what gets you.

If you can't put a screen protector on a $700 phone then you should reconsider the decision of owning a smartphone.
Tip: get a back tpu case as well.

I am not allergic to either. The problem is that I ordered the TRIDEA ALIKE case on 8th June from ebay but there were some manufacturing problems and the case delivery got delayed. It should be here in a weeks time. There are no decent screen protectors available in the local market. The ones that are available on ebay will take 2 weeks to be delivered to my country. With the case still not delivered, I am still contemplating about ordering a screen protector online or waiting for it to hit the stores.
f you can't put a screen protector on a $700 phone then you should reconsider the decision of owning a smartphone.

No one in their right senses would think of not putting a screen protector on a costly phone. Like I said, I was waiting for some screen protectors to hit the local markets since I already had a bad experience with shopping for a case online. I ordered it a month back and it's still not here.
I heard that the Galaxy s3 comes with an additional coating that repels oil. Could it be possible that I have only scratched this coating and not the actual glass. If yes, how can I tell the difference?

As posted elsewhere, got my first scratch last week, sand was the culprit, my fault though. Doesn't worry me. Sure I'll get a few more. Such is life.

What makes you think I am stupid? I have had 2 phones with gorilla glass before I got my s3 and none of them got a single scratch on them ever. I started using a screen protector when my phones were a couple of months old since its human nature to not care much about old things.
I was waiting for a good screen protector to be available in the local stores because I only just got the phone and thought It was okay to wait for sometime before I get a screen protector. I had no idea the S3 screen was going to be this delicate.

If I was in your situation, I would not use the phone untill I get screen guard.
Every screen gets scratches even if its scratch resistance.
IF YOU LIKE MY WORK, THANK ME BY THE BUTTON BELOW
Scratches don't affect the functionality of the device. Suck it up.
Also, scratch resistant not scratch PROOF.

What screen protector do you recommend. Something that I can get quickly and has good quality. I know SGP makes the best ones but are they available in India. Ordering online means having to wait a very long time for the shipping! ;(

1 SGS1, unscratched. 3 SGS2s, one with small scratch on screen and many chips in bezel, one with totally smashed screen (tram ran over it), one unscratched. 1 SGS3, tiny scratch on screen. 1 Lumia 800, unscratched (unused, to tell the truth).
I can barely see the scratch on the SGS3, it's ca. 3mm long, upper right of screen. And as said, since it was my fault for taking it to a beach, that's even less reason to beat myself up about it.
Screenguards seem to be the way forward for you. I just don't care enough - phone's for using, and I can't be bothered with the hassle of "babysitting" it instead of using it.

That makes sense. I hate the fact that I have to treat my phone like a living thing. I am only going to do this to get a good resale value on my phone when I decide to upgrade just like i did with my older phones.
Anyway, does anyone have the answer to my question. How can i tell whether i scratched the screen or the coating!

In fairness, mine hasn't lasted the last 3 days on the beach.. It was hidden in my bag but sand gets everywhere. A few small scratches, but so be it my phone is staying naked.

So I dropped my Samsung Galaxy SIII and the glass cracked (not the display tho), and I got to repair it. When I got him back, there was a little stain, but barely noticeable. After that, a friend dropped my phone and the glass part separated from the phone, but we could put it back. So my phone works perfectly, except now there are more stains that are visible on white or bright backgrounds (see attachments). After a while, this really started to annoy me so I tried something. I discovered that I can separate the glass from the phone. It seems risky, so before I do anything, I want to post it here.What do you guys think? Should I do it, and if I do, what then? Should i clean the display with something, blow on the display or what?
just 1 thing to note is that opening the screen hard and u can easily break or mess up with something
They're not stains. It looks to me to be where the screen and glass are no longer in contact with each other. Like when you peel a corner of a screen protector off

That's why I consulted the forum before I did anything. I heard that if I put it in a sealed bag of rice for 1 day it would help. Any thoughts on that?
Bag of rice is for water damage. Please see my.previous post. I don't think its moisture related

i don't think so that only helps on a water damaged phone but what would be helpful is you knowing what you are doing so start by watching some videos on youtube and getting the hang of it otherwise you will end up with something bigger than stains

If it is done professionally, a glass replacement would be adhered to the AMOLED panel / digitiser, with a translucent adhesive "LOCA" (Liquid Optically Clear Adhesive). Seems to me the people who repaired it should be able to apply some more or rectify the issue.
Any idea what is that on my phone's screen?
Not possible to clean. only visible when the surfaces is wet..

I don't have any screen protector, the glass itself looks like deeper somewhere... ONLY IF WET.. The phone few weeks old... Its already my second s3 phone, because the first went wrong. I dont wan't to send back again... I can live with it... I just curious is someone else experienced same thing with gorilla glass?
Looks like something is wearing off the glass, seen an effect similar on a Panasonic toughbook with an early touch screen and anti-glare coating that wore away. Afaik the glass on these phones doesn't come with any protective coating so I'd try cleaning it all off, what ever it is.
Edit. Just read your post again, did you get replacement phone from Samsung or another source? Maybe replacement screen fitted with non-standard glass?
Is it inside or outside? Its hard to tell from the picture.
If inside, it could be the glass coming away from the LOCA (liquid ocular clear adhesive) that sticks the glass to the screen

I got my replacement phone from a retailer where originally i bought the first phone, but i saw strange "damages" on the phone from the very first time.. Hard to say as damage.. but for example the screen was look like dirty between glass and bezel (or some very thin white rhing was there)... another is a thin chrome-like paint layer missing on 3-4mm at the rear camera corner.. But the phone came in an original SEALED box.. so everything was look like a factory one.. I dont think the retailer shop playing with me... but this phone really looks like a refurbished. So i donno.. I was searching on the internet about gorilla glass problems but i didnt see anything like this...

its hard to say for me also.. I guess its maybe outside, and something like the glass is deeper. This all not so visible, I just noticed today and i using the phone more weeks now... I just noticed that I always see the same "pattern" when the screen a litle bit wet or has some fat on the top from my finger... If i clean it up as its possible, you cant see at all, just from certain viewpoint - also very transparent..
The picture that I uploaded is brighted up with photoshop, and i was breath on the screen.. But always the same pattern comes back.. I cant do anything.
Strange.... I can live with this problem. However I was paying the same money like anybody else who got a faultless phone...
Just realy curious, maybe someone already has same experience...
As stated earlier in the thread, I would hazard a guess it's the glass separating from the loca.
When I replaced my own glass parts looked like that as I begun the separation.

GG2 has an oleophobic coating than can wear with time,I reckon what you are seeing is the side swipe wear areas from where you scroll home screens

Something can be true here, because that area takes the fat faster.. If i pull over a wet paper on the screen, on this place will be more water than the other part of the screen, where just little bubbles. In this area will be a continous "water-spot"..
However i dont think i can wear down in 2-3 weeks...

Well I have seen reports of this wear popping up at fairly regular intervals.....I think, as with metals, some people's sweat/oil just reacts with the coating possibly
I thinking now: it was maybe come citric acid on my fingers at my workplace. although that must be visible almost everywhere on the screen. I used more than a year long a galaxy nexus in the same conditions. there i did never see anything like this.
i think if the coating is missing on my phone, it was missing already in the box...
do you think is that possible to replace the missing coating with any aftermarket spays? maybe i'll give a try for it if someone has experience with...

I doubt it, my advice would be to learn a lesson, put a screen protector on.......and keep it on. Personally, a screen protector is the first thing I do to any phone, along with a flip case......not to everyone's taste but I've never broken or scratched a phone yet!

I have an issue on the same lines.. In a dark room against the backlight, I see dark spots on the screen.. though they are not there when the screen is lit..
I am thinking of taking the phone to the service center..

Yes i thinking on too, but in this case i get no replacement phone, and have to wait again around 2 weeks for the service, then start installing again everything.... I only do this with my phones in this year untill now. Suffering enough.. My prevoius phone (galaxy nexus) has an emmc bug, this is why i was trying to put another kernels, roms, etc.. finally was dead... then i bought the galaxy s3 that i used only for a day long because was stuck in earphone mode. - sending back, waiting again for another phone, now i have this.. at least works, but looks ****...
All my phones was Samsung, but i getting lost my confidence with this name... I think next time i will buy something else...

I would suspect that your 'new phone from a sealed box' was in fact a reconditioned unit with many thousands of hours use, hence why the screen coating is worn away.
Unless your citric acid solution was very strong, like you have holes in your fingers as well, I doubt this would cause it.
Again, best advise is to fit a £1 screen protector - it can save you from more than just scratches.
I've decided not to use screen protectors anymore. I just got my Nexus 6 less than a month ago, and I have been putting these things on for years from plastic to the new glass. The new tempered glass screen protectors fall short of the edges and look like a little island sitting on top of my screen with halo effect. The plastic ones eventually become pitted on the surface due to being plastic and discolored. I used to have one on my Galaxy S4 a long time ago and removed it and just used no screen protector which has Gorilla Glass 3. It has no physical damage other than general oil which can be wiped off.
I take care of my phone and the front glass is the same as my S4 which I had no problems with for several years. After trying to put one on my brother's phone (LG) yesterday and there being an issue with his, it just seems like it's more of a hassle and out of instinct than anything else.
So is this a question? Just carefully use a razor blade or even usually a fingernail will do it?

It was just an observation. I did have an order for a tempered glass one, but for the price I just got a case instead.
If one plans on selling their phone at some point, it's a good idea to put a protector on it. Even though it may look perfect without one, there are always minor scratches and pits if one looks hard enough. If you plan on keeping it until it dies, then no biggie.

Lol. Might make sense to keep it on then. This Nexus 6 is a really good phone so I don't plan on selling it even if I get a new one later on. The screen size is generous, plus I LOVE the fact that it is water resistant. All phones should be made stock water resistant.
Between the fact that it's a Nexus, big size, water PROOF, last micro USB 2.0 phone (I don't want to have to replace all my cords), etc.............Mine will not be sold or given away.
Only screen is 'water resistant' (rain, water droplets...), not entire phone.

Just curious have you submerged it in water? Ive read about it being water proof to a certain extent but still skeptical considering it hasnt got any rubber flaps to seal the ports. Ive got a moto x 2013 on the side and although it isnt rated as officially water resistant they did mention that the internals are supposedly coated with some substance that makes it resistant.

I have turned off the phone, taken out the SIM card as a precaution, then soaked it in lukewarm water (still kept off) for a few minutes, taken it out and let dry overnight (still kept off), then in the morning put back in the SIM card, and power on.
The videos show it being left on and put in water. The only thing is the SIM card issue, hence why I take it out and just turn off the phone as a precaution prior to being soaked and taken out and dried. The water proofing isn't like the Samsung where it uses rubber gaskets/seals to keep out water, the Motorola phone's components are specially coated.
I'm not sure about you, but lint has a tendency to accumulate around the face of the phone and speakers from being in the pocket so this helps me keep it clean anyways.

Although those pocket lints along the front panel does annoy the hell out of me its just not enough for me to run it under the tap. At least not yet I just had it since a month ago. Maybe a few more months when I get bored of it [emoji14] thanks for the info though.

I personally used to be worried about the screen breaking. Recently my tempered glass one cracked to the point where I had to take it off. On new years and yesterday, the phone fell 20ft off a Railcar I was on working, into rocks. I watched it fall on the screen side, and my heart stopped beating for a second each time. To my surprise, no scratches or breaks on the screen. I do have a beetle unicorn case. The screen is more resilient than I thought!
I suppose it depends on what you want to do long-term. For me, I will not sell my Nexus 6. It's a good phone and will be a back up assuming it is in good condition. I do use a case that has a lip on it, but other than that I do not personally feel the need to have a screen protector. I take care of my phone and don't rub the screen against sand despite living California. My old Galaxy S4 I took off and the glass is still fine.
Screen protector are a hassle and visually an eye sore to me. I'd rather enjoy my phone while I have it until the next one.
