Expecting official ICS - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just my thought, market-wise, Samsung would give it a fair bit of wait until they release the official ISC for SGSII. They would give the market some time to enjoy the ICS on Galaxy Nexus. Because of the fact Galaxy Nexus hasn't got much improvement on hardware, it will loose the advantage on the market over SGSII if SGSII 's got official ICS. Of course Samsung wants to sell more Galaxy Nexus always.
just my thought.

Doesn't seem like Samsung will artificially delay it by much. Here's the official announcement.
http://global.samsungtomorrow.com/?p=8894
Basically, expect it in Q1 2012.

Q1 2012 could still be March 31, 2012. That's quite a while away, especially considering new phones will be coming out with ICS out of the box.

Why would Sammy want to rush out the update when they have newer phones to shift. They're well aware, as are other manufacturers, that a lot of people will buy handsets with the latest firmware.
They've shifted a lot of SGII's but will want to sell more Nexus' and any other new handsets they have planned.
The majority of the members on here, come to root and flash the latest firmware and I'm sure there will some more leaks pretty soon, so I expect to have ICS long before Sammy update.

AGREED. agreed.

What is the fuss about ICS? Do you even know explicitly what it is going to improve? It's hyped up a lot.

Getting back to the original topic...
Let's assume that 31 Mar 2012 is the date that Samsung will release the official ICS ROM for the SGSII.
Isn't that pretty reasonable?
What I'm trying to say is if Samsung is indeed trying to delay the release on purpose to drive up the sales of their newer phones, they would have come up with something like Q2 or later.
ICS source code was released just in November 2011. Those ppl expecting an update by year-end of 2011 are just being unrealistic. The fact that Samsung came out and told us Q1 2012 shows me that they're working to give SGSII owners a timely update.

ics is coming
ics is coming in jan 2012

The announcment is a few weeks away. Nvidia did not even announced Kal-EL officially.
Which means at best i will be able to buy the TF2 next year q1/q2.
That's a pretty bad assumption. They haven't announced it. It will be at least a couple of weeks after an announcement. You can also factor in delays and such. I seriously doubt a release will be this year.
As far as I can tell, no company has even hinted at a Kal-El device for the near future.
And there will be delays... from both Nvidia and Asus. I'd be a bit surprised if they had released something before February.

Why in the world would you believe "some websites"?
The tegra 3 hasn't even been released yet. They've dropped hints here and there to keep their investors. But that is it. And based on history, these kinds of products are due for delays.
And don't expect the price of the TF 1 to drop. The TF2 will be $100 more.
I don't understand why people think the TF2 can come out in a couple weeks. Here's a breakdown of what's going to happen.
Nvidia has to actually release the chip. Asus engineers have to integrate it into their systems. There will undoubtedly be hardware and software bugs. They'll have to stamp out those bugs, or at least enough of the bugs for the system to be stable. Then they'd have to rush these new specs out to production.
You're looking at at least 6 months.
I learn from history. I first heard about a transformer-like device from asus in mid 2010. Just groundless rumors saying asus would "soon" come out with a powerful tablet that is different than any other tablets (keyboard dock hint hint). I waited and waited and waited... Then a year later, the TF finally came out. By that time, I had bought the a500.
So, again, what person in his right mind would think the TF 2 will come out in a couple weeks? I don't get it. Who started this ridiculous rumor?
tegra 3 is already a finished product.

Yea it's gonna be a screamer...... site says it's runnng Android 2.3....progress
Maybe it's sooo advanced it's too good for even HC
G for Games Source information for The TF2 is from Droid Life we all know no "just Rumors" there,
Wait for the 25nm chips thats he next real screamers
Of course... they didn't get the whole "different" tablet thing correct either... Always Innovating had it first. I was going to get that tablet.. but it was so ugly. So glad Asus made it so much better.
Isn't the TF1 still selling really well? What's the rush to cannibalize the success of this tablet? And I very much doubt that the TF2 is really that close to being ready to release. I'm guessing no sooner than early Q2 next year honestly. Really, the hardware of the TF1 isn't really holding it back at this point, it's the lack of a lot of good apps/games/etc IMHO. I just hope that other companies see the success of the true docking keyboard form factor so there will be other choices and a continued segement of the tab market that the TF101 currently holds all to itself. I really don't need a tab without the keyboard - it is MUCH easier to use as my laptop replacment with the tab docked. Also a big advantage to double the battery life with the dock.... anyway, I am digressing.... I call April 2012 for the TF2.
whats with all of this hate?
I would assume the best guess being October seeing as the CEO confirmed the Transformer 2 will NOT be delayed as previous speculation stated. This may push to November with the announcement of ICS being pushed back. We'll have to wait and see. I just purchased a Transformer a week ago and am returning it to wait for this beast.

What are you basing October/November on? Even if the CEO confirmed no delays, you have no idea what its general timeframe of release is. If X = expected release date and Y = delay, X - Y = Z (actual expected release date). You're somehow saying X - 0 = October/November, while providing no info that solves for X. Like I said in my last post, Q1 at the earliest, with April being my personal prediction.

in response yto the OP's original question...no one knows for sure. It's anyones guess. if the history of the Tf1 means anything it will still be a while. Not that I doubt for a minuite they might try to rush some halfassed product out the door in time for Christmas sales. ok here you go buddy. It was a RUMOR that the transformer was to be released in october.
google Transformer 2 coming out in October you'll get dozens of other sites reporting the same thing.
Also, a report came out TODAY saying that the trasnformer 2 was slated for a november 7th release date according to a UK retailer.(READ LINK FROM POST ABOVE)
I cant post links because i need atleast 8 posts to post URLs
How many fingers are going to point to this date? April? I'd put my money on november 7th. Much more logical then to trust some random kid on a forum going "ya i think its april"
Edit: i know that it is a RUMOR that it was supposed to be released in October but think about it. Why would the CEO make claims that the transformer 2 would not be delayed if their wasnt a "general timeframe"

Android 4.0 on Tablet S?

Hi,
do you have any official information, if the tablet s will get an update to android 4?
I found one webpage which says that this will happen, but an official statement would be better.
I really hope ICS comes to the tablet.
Hopeful, as it's coming to the Sony Ericsson Xperia phones
http://www.mobot.net/ice-cream-sandwich-coming-sony-ericsson-androids-31986
Absolutely no reason we wont get it since all sony phones from 2011 will get it...just a matter of when.
Sony will need time to customize 4.0 for the S's features. In that time we'll be seeing Tegra 3 updates to everyone's lines. Not sure Sony wouldn't be better off spending their time getting a Tegra3 S out with 4.0 on it.
Ok thanks.
I hope a Tegra 3 will not come in a month or so, because I want to buy mine today and don´t want to see a new version with tegra 3 in short time.
Unfortunately that's the game we play buying these devices; that best buy commercial was right when people buy a phone only to walk outside and see the billboard for the newer, better device.
I'm pretty positive the Tablet S will get ICS since Sony wants to bolster sales of their first official android tablet on the market. They'd definitely have some happy customers in here!

the tablet is to new not to do it plus tegra 3 is just a beefier verison of tegra 2
If I remember correctly, Google said that ICS was a meld of Honeycomb (tablet only) and the the versions prior to Honeycomb (phone optimized). I believe ICS is similar to iOS in that both tablet and phone can run the same apps (where Honeycomb couldnt run phone apps). So most likely ICS will be coming to most devices (prolly 2010 and older) so all their apps can run on all ICS devices
You're right, it would be in everyone's benefit to put ICS on every device; however, they most likely will only do recent, dual-core phones and tablets because it's up to the manufacturers (HTC, Sony, Samsung) to incorporate ICS into their proprietary OS add-ons. If Sony is listening to its consumer base, however, they'll definitely update the Tablet S.
And yes, it's a way of merging phone and tablet OS's. It looks pretty much like honeycomb with some graphical tweaks and useability improvements.
I asked the same question in the Sony Forums. The mods there work with the engineers at Sony.
https://forum.sel.sony.com/viewtopic.php?f=109&t=11480
Show some interest and maybe we'll make it happen, sooner rather than later.

For what it's worth, Sony Style employees are confirming the upgrade. I would be more comfortable seeing an official announcement though.
ICS Is coming just can't say when, there will be a minor update this friday, then another one in December, i'd expect 4.0 in the new year though, maybe as late as March.
definitely. but the asus transformer prime doesnt bother me cause i had a transformer before and the quality is terrible.
I read that there definetly will be an Update to Android 4.0. I hope it will come at Christmas

This seems the most likely expectation. ICS Source has only recently been released for manufacturers to impliment the code to their devices.

Well, the source isn't being released until mid-july, so, a few weeks after that before the alphas start popping up.
CM10, soooon-ish
(CM9-RC1 was just released, though nightlies have been available since a few weeks after ICS rolled out last november (which is how long i've been using it too))
It all depends on the carriers unfortunately. If you look at the international versions of their phones, Samsung is actually pretty quick with updates (one of the first vendors to push ICS) - but takes forever in North America (esp. the US).
The only hope I have is because there is surprisingly a small amount of bloat in our phones compared to the past - maybe it'll be faster.
As mentioned above, we'll probably first see it on a CM version, and if/when the devs figure out how to port international SGSIII ROMs over to our variants we could see some bits and pieces of Jelly Bean after Samsung releases the update (most likely in Europe first) for the international phones.
My guess (just a wild shot in the dark) is that if Google pushes JB in mid-July to the GNexus and the new Nexus 7, based on the factors above, we'll have useable bits in our phones by maybe late Sept, early Oct. -- Again just wild speculation on my part.
Q3 2012 is the rumor - so Q4 2012 to Q1 2013 is the most likely reality.
After the Note 2 is released.
Not soon enough lol but the side updated apps like YouTube make it seem all better

I think it will, just take a while for Samsung to release anything official. Otherwise, I think we'll get a ROM or whatever pretty quick after it comes out :fingers-crossed:

When is the Next NEXUS Smartphone Going to be Released?

So, we saw Jelly Bean released at I/O, we heard great stuff and all but still one question remains:
When is the next Nexus phone coming? If one looks at the trend in the past years, this happens ~end of year *however* typically coinciding with the next *major* release of Android.
Since JB was just an incremental upgrade (4.1 and not 5.0),
1) do you think we will see Android 5.0 (Key Lime Pie) released before Christmas and,
2) do you think there will be a Nexus phone to go with it?
What say you?
I'm not sure.. but if you follow Google's pattern (2010: nexus s+gingerbread, 2011: galaxy nexus+ics) there will be another nexus and and android 5.0 announced this fall..
However, considering that JB (along with nexus 7) was just released and ICS haven't celebrate its first birthday, it's too soon for Google to announced another major upgrade..

I really don't understand why people think like this. Google pays engineers hundreds of thousands of dollars to work everyday on software improvements. Yes, Jellybean just came out...do you think that means their high paid engineers are just going to take 6 months off? No. The software is ever changing and improving daily, and when they feel it is a large enough improvement to be dubbed the next Android version..and not 4.1.1, 4.1.2, it will be so. It could happen today, it could happen next week, it could happen next year.

I'm not saying that Google must stop developing, but they need to find the right time to release their update.. I'd say Q1 2013 would be just right, enough time for both JB and N7 too settle, make some more improvements and to counter Apple's upcoming iPhone 5.. it's not about speed, it's about timing..

Yes you are right. But if the software is one on every device would be not a biggy for the dev community. At the end more choices about build quality would be nice. Maybe it is a bold idea.....

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if a new nexus doesn't come out till Q2-3 2013 just because they just announced JB and the next version probably won't come out just yet. I doubt they will launch a Nexus device without a new android version.
The nexus program is currently changing with google giving multiple manufacturers early access to next build. Current info indicates Google will begin the new strategy by releasing multiple (supposedly 5) nexus phones by different manufacturers unsubsidized next November.
You can find the original source WSJ article by googling "wsj.com: google changes tack on android" (i would post the link but i'm new and can't post links until 10 posts.
I have a feeling they will release another Nexus phone this Nov/Dec. It will probably be android 4.2 unlike 5.0 that everyone is expecting.
2Ghz, 2GB RAM, 1080p screen please
Probably when Apple unbans the current Nexus phone.

Yeah same specs as we hoped for S3
I don't think it will be 2Ghz....more likley it will be 1,6-1,8Ghz. And 1,5GB Ram. With the whole new screen technology it will take time to get 1080p with a decent battery consumption. But till the end of this year i am sure we will see another Nexus phone
Next Nexus?
I think it all depends on the legal system. If the ban on the Nexus stands up It may take awhile to make the changes needed to get around the injunction.
I think they'll release it this year with 4.2. As one of you said, 2 versions a year.

I don't think the dev community will split across devices. Let's not forget the definition of Nexus is to be a *reference platform*, meaning that:
- all hardware components are standard (OMAPx, sound and radio, etc)
- all components have all source + drivers available (no Samsung lock-down crap)
Imagine the dev community working but the user base x5, I'd say this would be awesome...
November is good but then unlikely/unrealistic to believe devices would be available worldwide within 2012. Pondering if I should get me a Galaxy Nexus for the rest of the year, then see what is on offer

Would you buy a sony again?

Yes, no or maybe

Maybe...
I really like the Sony hardware, but the slow update cycles (Jellybean March 2013 - Really?) are making we regret buying the Xperia S. I am seriously thinking of selling it and buying a Nexus 4 instead.
The only thing that might change that decision right now, is an official ASOP Jellybean release by Sony/Google. However the ASOP tree looks dead, with no activity for ages.
Thinking that Sony have thrown in the towel with the XPeria S.
Only if it is a Sony Nexus device as it would probably be the best looking device with fastest and most up to date software.

That's life. Xperia U is an entry level phone, it was released with Gingerbread, and got an ICS update. Show me another manufacturer that bothers to update the base OS on their entry level phones.
I dun consider a phone priced at 16000 to b entry level
Its a mid range
And it was released in may 2012 when all other major manufacturers were shipping wid ics on board
So getting released wid 2.3 was a negative aspect of SONY as this phone was considered to b a NXT phone
So ics was mandatory for it
Bt it got just a single official update ( which logically it should have been shipped wod)
U can call galaxy mini, htc explorer, sony xperia tipo to b entry level as they are priced below 10000INR
@the admins,
When I can't have my Sony love thread due to possible flaming then this thread might not be a good idea either.
@the thread,
My heart is with Sony. My ICS is perfect and when I get JB in the same quality I will buy again.
Another important point for me stays the support of CM. actually that's more important to me than official JB.

No. This phone has good ideas, but fails in the execution.
ICS for Sola in September 2012. Really? When I brought a new phone, I expected an upgrade, or at least ICS --> ICS. Not ICS --> GB.
Floating touch is, again, a good idea. But it is fairly useless and is impossible to type with.
Given the price of the Nexus 4, not a chance of me buying Sony again.

Yes, how much will it cost?
"The 8GB version (unlocked) is priced at $299, while the 16GB version is $349. T-Mobile USA will carry the 16GB LG Nexus 4, though with a price of $199 and a 2-year contract, it doesn't sound like much of a deal.
"
Not a chance. I told myself the same thing after my X10 but was foolishly drawn in by the XS (no patience). I will never buy another Sony phone again. Apart from the awful update cycle this phone has become utterly boring and ICS has made it very buggy. You should be able to get £150-200 for this phone so only pay ~£100 on top for the 16Gb Nexus. Can't wait!
Sony always stays a generation behind.
When others release quad core phones it releases dual core.
Besides the buttons if my neo v worn off within three months

only if they start sticking bigger batteries on their phones.
Sony used to pride itself on battery performance on their portable devices in the 90s, now their phones can hardly match the Battery longevity of a cheapo Chinese brand phone.
They also need to do something about their updates, the galaxy s3 and HTC one x both launched after the s and both are already officially running jelly bean.
They should release 1 or 2 flagships per year and put all their resources to make sure they are kept up to date for at least 1.5 years with no delays pushing out updates.
I think I might get the n4 and see if Sony get their shtt together before supporting them again.

I was being conservative, it may be later.
The 2012 phones are all still 6 months away from getting Jellybean on them, according to Sony.
For now, AOKP on my S is fine but as soon as the Nexus 4 lands here in Germany, I'll leave Sony for good.
