[Q] USB external storage device problems - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
I have a galaxy tab 10.1 standard not rooted with a usb adaptor kit. I first tried to connect a seagate 2TB external expansion desktop hard drive with its own power supply and at first the tab had found it,it showed up as a mini sd symble in the notification and said that it needed to be formatted. I can not remember exactly what it said because it only displayed it twice then never seen the discription again. I also tried to connect a samsung S2 portable 1TB hard drive,when i connected this drive the notification was a usb symble and said high powered usb divice that needs to have power supply.
This is what i have tried with the seagate i reformatted it in FAT32 also in smaller partitions of 150GB and even cnnected it through a powered usb hub even though it had its own power supply.
This is what i have tried with the Samsung S2- 1TB Portable without its own power supply, i have reformatted to FAT32, i have partitioned in smaller 100GB partitions,i have also connected through a powered usb hub and it still comes up with high powered usb device that needs a power supply.
And this is what i have done to the tab, i have done the hard reset,but what i also want to know is that when you are in the reboot mode should i be also erasing the cach memory partition as well as the user memory or should i not play with the cach partition, not shore.
I would really apreciate any help at all on this matter.
Thank you,
Deanosc.

[Q] USB Port and HDD

Hi there,
Is there a way to plug a parted HDD on A101?
I have my 1,5TB Disk that is parted in 3:
* WBFS - 300GB
* FAT32 - 300GB
* NTFS - remaining space
and when i plugged it, nothing happened, no errors, and the "Files" app didn't see my HDD...
Yes but the drive must be able to be powered by the 101. If the 101 does not push enough power then it will not work. Try a powered hub and see if it works. If it does then the drive needs more power than the 101 can supply.
With the. 71 update, my archos powers and reads my seagate 500 gb miniusb powered ntfs drive. Played a video off it. When i mounted it, i had some issues with internal apps2sd apps getting hosed, but I am not sure it is related.

No way an USB port will power a 3,5" hard drive (1,5 TeraByte isn't 2,5" for sure). It only supports 500mA whereas a desktop hard drive needs several Amperes.
It has to be powered externally, just like on any PC.
Did a quick test with my 1GiByte Seagate drive, powered by an external power supply: Works like a charm.

Connecting HD by USB

Hello there,
I have a problem when trying to connect my portable HD (250GB) through USB adapter, it say that is not possible to conncet. I though the problem was the adapter, but not because I could connect a regular USB memory.
Anyone has been this problem, and What was the solve?
Thanks in advance
My guess is that the drive is in NTFS format and not something Android can read, like FAT32.
It's either the file system as mentioned by steckums or the usb adapter doesn't provide enough power for the hard disk to run.
Almost all usb hard disk drives require "high power" from the usb port which the adapter can not deliver. It should say so in the error message. You need a powered usb hub to connect a usb drive to the Tab.

I'll try it, and report
I tried but didnt work.
I connected the HDD to regular hub and nothing, i never know what is a powered hub. Then a reformat the HDD to FAT 32 and the tablet was not able to start.
The last test was try to connect a powered HDD and this one was reconized by tablet but the oroblem was the format.
In conclusion the problem is the power and the format of HDD.
Thanks for your answers

[Q] 64GB Pen Drive doesnt work on S2 OTG

Hi Guys,
first time i have a problem, so i hope that you can help me
today i buyed a 64GB Pen Drive (CnMemory Spaceloop XL) and i wanted to use it with the OTG cable on the S2
but everytime i connect the Pen Drive to the S2, the Drive gets detected but the S2 says: "Delete USB Storage, USB Storage is empty or have an unsupported filesystem"
i formated the stick with ntfs and fat32, but none of both works...
i restart the S2, doesnt work...
on my computer, the pen drive gets detected
the otg cable works, because i succesfully tried an 4GB Pen Drive
the S2 runs with the Checkrom RevoHD v6 Rom
is the pen drive just to big for the S2?
Thanks for Help!
Format PenDrive with SGS2?

with Storage -> Format USB-Storage?
there just comes a popup "USB-Storage gets disconnected..."
It might be a case that the USB stick requires too much power from the phone's USB port.
I had two USB memory sticks, a 16GB and a 4GB. The phone works fine with the 4GB but not the 16GB. Now if I connect the 16GB and the phone to a powered USB hub, then the memory stick works fine.
ok, then i will try it next week again by buying a 32GB pen drive
lets see
edit: problem solved with a new rom, the S2 ask me now for formating the pendrive, after that its working well

[Q] connecting to USB HDD

Hi,
I'm looking to get either the Tab or Note 10.1, but need to know whether its possible to transfer images from the micro SD card to an external USb powered HDD. I know I can get hold of a micro usb male/ mini usb male adapter to link the Tab/Note to the HDD, but don't know if the Tab/Note will power the drive, or if it's possible to transfer pics in this way.
I'm planning a roadtrip in the USA later this year and would not have regular access to wifi to upload images to 'dropbox' etc so would rather back them up to a HDD.
I know there are several similar postings, but no suitable/applicable answers.
Suggestions/answers ?
Cheers

The Tab 10.1 doesn't have a micro SD card slot - the Tab 2 does. On the Tab 10.1 there's a chunk of the internal memory mounted as /sdcard that you can store your photos on.
As far as moving files to an external drive goes, you can do that with most file managers so that's no problem.
One issue you may have is that the external drive will need to be formatted as FAT 32, not NTFS. That means that you can't copy files larger than 4GB to the external drive. That's probably not going to be a problem for you if you're moving images (not movies).
To connect the drive, you'll need an OTG cable, which are fairly inexpensive. However, there's no guarantee that the tablet will be able to power the drive. External thumb drives work fine for me. I haven't tried any portable hard drives, but as long as the current demand is fairly low it may work. Some people have had success with portable drives, so it's worth giving it a try, especially if you're talking about a notebook size drive as those tend to be less power hungry.
I have successfully mounted an external HDD via a externally powered USB-Hub. The FAT32 partition can be mounted without additional software, the NTFS partition can be mounted with the free app "NTFS mount". USB-Sticks will be powered by the tablet without problem. The problem is, that the combined card reader / USB adaptor can only be used with one function at a time. So I had to copy the SD-card to the internal storage of the tab and then move it from there to the external HDD.
You might want to think about buying an Intenso Memory 2 Move HDD. It's an external 2.5" HDD with a battery (6 hours) and a wifi hotspot. You can access the drive via wifi, ethernet RJ45 and USB 3.0. Works like a charm with Android.

Achim
Sorry, it was the Tab 2 (10.1 screen, stylus thing etc) I was meaning but couldn't find a heading for it. Is it likely to power an external 2.5 drive ?
Most certainly it will not power HDD. The easiest solution is an external miniature USB hub with power supply.

Achim
I would like to mention that HDD must be partitioned as GPT to work otherwise it shows as corrupt.

LG G5 otg and Hard drive problem

Hello I am trying to connect a 4tb external hard drive to my phone (lg g5 h830) the drive is NTFS formatted. Im using total commander with the "usb stick" plug in. Ive been able to access thumb drives formatted NTFS using this setup. I figured it was because the drive wasn't getting enough power from the phone so I bought a 2-pack of USB OTG Y cables, and connected in a .5amp power supply. The phone pops up with a thing saying to check the power cable because its not getting enough juice, but it doesn't recognize that drive is plugged in. Any advice would be much appreciated. oh, also it the dialog that normally pops up when i use other things OTG asking me weather to power the device from the phone or not doesn't pop up.
Thank you
