HARD BRICKED :'( Help please! vibrant - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so basically I was ODINing back to stock.
I left the phone in my lap without the battery cover, and it fell unplugging itself, and the battery also got removed.
Now the phone will NOT turn on no matter what I do!
Any help?

Have u tried holding the volume buttons and plugging in the USB?
Have u tried other ways to get into dl mode?

I do not suggest the unbrickable mod unless you are extremely good with soldering and have eyes like a eagle. Id send it off to mobiletechvideos or Adam Outler for a professional debrick service. Ive been soldering since the 1970's and professionally since the 1990's for Qualcom and Intel and I decided not to offer this service after doing this mod to my phone and several customer phones. It is a very small working area and even with a 20x eye loop I found it just slightly to difficult to guarantee the work myself. Maybe its my old man eyes, but I would send it off to someone who has no problems performing this task on a daily basis... IMHO

lol, sucks getting old, I did the mod myself with a $7 iron from radio shack in less than 10 min. Disclaimer: I sharped my soldering skills working for a military contractor doing micro smb rework with a microscope 8~10 hours a day for a few years.
But yes, very small parts very very easy to f.kd. if you don't know what you're doing.

Yes very much agreed, lol... I know what Im doing and my Iron is a standard Weller WES51 and I was using brand new 1/64 tips. I just could not properly see the damn thing. Below is an image of my resistor, its thinner then the finger print folds on my index finger, and my fingers are small lol. I have to agree its best to use a microscope set to something easy like 50-100x I would assume.

On another topic, several years ago I found out I am diabetic and I now can not read text even on my 55" HDTV, although I am near sighted (and it seems like I am focusing ok when using the loop) I have a feeling it must be my eyes not allowing me to see it clearly. After testing and RMA repairing thousands of Qualcom GPS units back in the day, I am not accustomed to failing at something I was normally always was good at. I guess the last 10 years of not working in the electronics industry has made me rusty (2001 I changed professions). My baby brother got to witness this mod taking place on his Fascinate and his jaw nearly dropped, and he mods car computers as a hobby. Its not something 99% of users could do I wouldn't think.
P.S. I have 6 years straight of RMA surface mount repair work on the GPS units you find in the trucking industry (the first few generations in the mid 90's), not only did I solder 8 hours 5 days a week, I also had to clean out disgusting coffee crap and cigarette/cigar residue (and only God knows what else), LOL... But it was fun. I would clean the disassembled units in a commercial grade dishwasher machine (just for electronics) using only hot distilled water, and then dry bake them in an oven, re-assemble them with new screens/keyboards etc and then go to town testing/repairing what ever it was that got it sent in for the RMA in the first place. The work was not even close to the small size this phones pcb and components are though, lol... not even remotely... haha, I would need a Microscope to regain my confidence to regularly work on this PCB again...
A $7 IRON????? Jeez and I barely could do it with descent equipment

Ironically I developed far sight problems, my doctor said was because of the extended hours working with a microscope and my eyes started to become lazy to focus at far objects, however my near vision improve ??? go figure.

WAIT, WAIT LOOK AT THIS FIRST, ADAMS BEEN WORKING ON THIS FOR A LONG TIME, AND ITS LOOKING LEGIT TO BE ABLE TO DO AN UNSOLDERABLE JTAG!!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1397393

To the OP, I really hate saying this but I just have to ask. What were you thinking Odining your phone without the battery cover on??? This is just asking for a hard brick... Now that I got that off my chest I want to say I feel your pain. As jrafael has stated you can debrick it yourself if you can solder. But, I would contact Adam Outler here in the XDA forums and ask him if he is still doing this service. Below is his Vibrant DeBrick thread...

LMAO, I know it Bro!! It does seem a bit of a stretch, but I do respect Adams work in this area!
Especially since I myself once bricked my T959, by doing a KIES up-grade procedure, before I was warned by stumbling across a thread the next day after I made the fatal mistake, on the dangers of using KIES, Was dumb and newbee then!! = @#$%&* and even more cuss words! LOL
So anyways I've been looking and hoping for someone to be able to do what Adam says he's accomplished, and that is to be able to re-write corrupted primary and 2ndary Bootloaders W/O having to JTAG the traditional way!
But I'm not even disputing your word Bro, and I respect your contribution to this community as well. I'm still kinda lost as an Easter Egg with Linux, but I'm educating myself each week with it, so as to be able to perhaps execute a recovery if I brick my phone again, so I thought throwing that Post Link in by Adam might have some merit to it, and help this poor Guy out, I feel his pain, But like you I gotta wonder why he had the cover off, and had it set somewhere it would fall and unplug, etc!! Peace Bro!

I had the cover off because I was battery pulling because I was flashing MIUI, then ICS Passion v8 came along and i wanted to ODIN but was too lazy to put the cover back on. It was on my lap, i moved a bit and bam, it falls to the ground :/
thanks a bunch though, trying your thing first.

Sounds like your looking for an upgrade from the Vibrant. Why not just get it fixed? I think its only like $35 or along those lines to debrick it... might be wrong though...

I have just wasted so much money on phones its not even worth it anymore. I have a Samsung galaxy S2 Epic Touch which im thinking of using now. The vibrant was the best phone I have ever owned, and if its a free fix, i will stay with it, but I honestly do not want to spend over 20 more dollars.

O, I hear ya. Good luck with what ever you do. The Vibrant is still pulling in good money even for bricked ones, so good luck to you...

Hey I hear ya, stuff happens, and if were smart, it doesn't re-occur!! LOL
Anyways food for thought, If you actually get the boot-loaders re-flashed and your phone turns on, awesome job, congratulations!
BTW, the primary Bootldr is for powering the phone back on, and is the most important one, the 2ndary Bootldr does the instructions for loading the OS or as we call it the ROM.
OK also, bear in mind, this resurrection Adams got going is for either GB or ICS Roms, so what I'm pointing out is. If you do get it to turn on, after doing the Bootldr's.
Remember to load a ROM that is specific in build to either GB or ICS!!!!
Otherwise it might cause a big problem, because if the BL's are written for those type of builds, then it can only seem logical to me to re-flash from the start one of those two types.
If it powers back on, you can let it roll and see what happens or pull the battery before it begins to load the ROM that may be on it. Have ODIN or Heimdall set up with a GB or ICS based build, extract the TAR file from whatever flavor you choose, and then set it up, with re-partician, and the 512 pit, and tick reboot after flashing or keep it un-ticked, wait for the Green Pass indicator on ODIN etc, and then un plug it, and hold the power rocker until it turns on, your choice!!
At least then if it successfully boots up with that ROM, you have a working phone that you can tear back down and start where you want or move forward to NEO's ROM, which I recommend Passions V8 as you were attempting that before this ordeal happened! I've been running it all day, and so far 0 defects, despite all the chatter I've read about problems, which aren't occurring on my install.
I always wipe, both caches before I do the 1st re-boot after a ROM flash! Prevents alot of bootlooping and problems!!
Anyways good luck with all this, and Please inform me on whatever happened good/bad/or indifferent. As I need to know if this is a new frontier we've crossed here concerning the Vibrants, and Adams brain child program!

[Q] Please help if you can!

Ok, so I am one of the MANY pissed off Vibrant owners. My GPS would never work so I saw that video of the GPS antenna mod and decided to try it for myself. Before you go and tell me what a dumba$$ I am for breaking it I took the utmost care in trying to complete this. Anyway, I did everything that the vid said except for the part where it says not to bend it too far or it will break. It broke. Yeah, beyond words my frustration. Started cussing Samsungs name. Anyway, does anyone have a clue as to how I can fix this or am I screwed? Thanks in advance!

Sad to say but opening up the device voided your warranty. IF tmobile finds out what happened you will probably be charged the out of warranty fee... You should have thought about this a lot harder before you decided to play operation on your vibrants guts

GPS Status

I Just wanted to write a short thread to let everyone know about my experience with the GPS of this phone. I to like everyone else have always had major issues with the GPS on this phone. Sometimes with little to no connection at all. Sometimes I would get a good connection for like 5 minutes and then would lose it for hours unless I did a reboot which then it would start all over again.
I found the thread GPS hardware fix: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878970 which gave me a ton of useful info. I flashed the s.gps file which worked great but did not always give me a good connection. I took it a step father and did the actual hardware tweak where you open your phone and bend the little copper antenna up. That worked awesome as well so I took it to the next level and opened my phone again and placed a small piece of credit card plastic under the antenna to keep it propped up. I had a wonderful connection at most times but it looked almost like I had a buffering problem or something as I would drop connection for a few seconds at a time and then it would reconnect, not really sure what the deal was.
I opened my phone to check things out once again and the credit card plastic had fallen down. I went to fix it and snapped the little copper piece off which I was fairly warned about. So I read on in the thread and wanted to try the solder method. I happen to work with a guy that used to work on circuit boards and soldering and what not so I asked him if he could give it a shot, he couldn't make it any worse.... After he a made the small round ball of solder I put everything back together and booted up... I have never had such accurate GPS. I drove home yesterday and ran GPS test all the way home and it tracked me between 14-17 feet accuracy. It has constantly stayed that way for days now. I have gone from 2.2 roms, to 2.2.1 and 2.3.4 and each one, after applying the proper fixes for each rom (GPS files) has maintained amazing GPS results. I recommend anyone with any soldering skills to try this and see what kind of results you get. I was super worried at first about breaking my phone forever but I couldn't be happier that I went thru with it.
I know I know... everyone is going to want me to post screen shots. That is my next step I will be taking some of my accuracy and uploading them over then next day or so for anyone to check out. If you have any questions about anything I have done or any help please feel free to PM me or post on here. I will help you with anything I can, And please remember this is a thread of my personal experience with the vibrant GPS. This is not my fix, all the credit goes to Plato56 for being the first one to try this and KWKSLVR for posting the hardware fix thread. And everyone involved in the vibrant community for your input, posts, ideas and help. That is the only reason I even attempted this. Good luck if you decide to give it a shot!
Post a photo
Thanks for your personal experience and I am happy that you recovered successfully. Kudos, to ya and how you overcame that challenge.
Could you post some photos of the area of the phone with the cover removed to show the after work and to give your experience more detail?

may i ask which files did you use on the 2.3.4 jvq? i too had the same issue and came up with the same solution, thing is on gingerbread rroms its wont lock for some reason while on 2.2.1 it works instantly with no fixes or anything
As soon as I get home (Im at work) when I am around my camera I will take pictures of the inside of my phone so everyone can see.
For the JVQ....I am afraid I have not done that one yet. I am on JVP Simply_Honey_4.0_Revo rom right now. I just got done downloading Trigger Redux 15 and I am going to try that out next. Maybe I should skip to Revolutionrom JVQ and check it out though and see how the gps is.
SP v4 is JVQ.

Simply Honey v4 worked great for GPS. I am now on Trigger Redux build 15 and GPS is the same, outstanding.
I totally agree with the OP regarding the gps working on Vibrant. I did exactly the same steps and i have no issues. I'm using Tard 2.1 rom from Team Whiskey and i found in the Market an application called GPS Boost which seems to increase the gps signal.
I think getting satellite locks using GPS Test and GPS Status works for most users on the CM7 or 2.3.4 GB ROMS. My phone was getting 8/12 or even sometimes 10/12 satellite locks within a few seconds with just the gps fixes included in those ROMS. The question is how is the GPS working with Google maps or even Mapquest? that's where you would see the major flaw in the GPS, at best it would just give you a general idea of where you were.
On 2.2 ROMs or even the one I'm using now Bi-Winning V3 (2.2.1), the mapping accuracy is spot on even as to which lane on the highway I'm using.
This is after running maps for about 7 seconds

Please advise?
it should be fixable, depending on if the screen setup is one assembly, then its going to cost you, im pretty sure its the digitizer that you cracked or damaged, i will look and see what i can find for you
Are you running any ROMS? If so, try flashing a new one. If you are just at stock phone, try flashing the stock firmware over from the Motorola website. All directions are there and firmwares.
Also are you rooted or/and have an unlocked bootloader.
I am hoping it's a software glitch but it's probably a hardware issue.

I don't see any cracks, could be sub surface maybe? I think digitizers are like 50 bucks.
One guy told me digitizers either work or they don't, there is no half working. Is that not true?
Edit: just saw your post Voelker, yes I am running Alien through RomRacer's CWM.
I wish I could get to my TiBu and MyBackup apps
Your in luck, this is what you need, http://www.ebay.com/itm/AT-T-Motoro...ultDomain_0&hash=item4aaa0e3c28#ht_3026wt_907
can you repair it yourself is the wuestion.
Damn thats crucial. I know this is prob not the most helpful idea but I guess worth a try.. Have you downloaded the Touchscreen Booster app to see if it makes a difference? You can have it pushed to your phone via the Android Market on a computer, just select the Atrix and your phone should download it automatically. The dropdown box you need to change is right about where your top row of keys is so maybe just maybe.. Try the "super optimized" setting. Sorry I cant be more help, hope you get it resolved.

That's what I figured. The guy sounds old (no offense to you older guys) but sometimes older guys like to rip stuff apart without taking the time to really watch what you're doing.
I assume superglue will work fine to put the pieces back together?

that would work, but i wouldnt recoment it. if you read the comments they will give you good tips too im only 19 and ive torn apart blackberys and every version of the iphone(ive owned 8 total) i dont have issues with electornics or little parts, but you are right for (no offece) older people, or elders, they tend to lets say... slip or something and screw it up, you could even record yourself and watch it after.
---------- Post added at 12:13 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:11 AM ----------
for the glue, use a blow drier, ir buy some adhesive superglue i think is a no no because it fuses the 2 things together, that could screw stuff up. just my 2 cents
---------- Post added at 12:16 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:13 AM ----------
also keep me posted on your operation
Welp, it's fixed, aside from a few qualms. One, the prox sensor doesn't work. Two, I didn't clean off the old adhesive stuff well enough and the screen is slightly bulged out. Not a big deal but it is what it is.
Overall, I kind of wish I would have just spent the 20 bucks extra and claimed insurance on it. Oh well. I'll probably do it sometime after tax season next year when I have some money to waste on it. For now, it'll do.

Welp, it's fixed, aside from a few qualms. One, the prox sensor doesn't work. Two, I didn't clean off the old adhesive stuff well enough and the screen is slightly bulged out. Not a big deal but it is what it is.

[Q] Unlocked Bootloader! Flashing poll

The bootloader is officially unlocked and CWM is available for Recovery. Also looks like CM9 is under beta testing on the prime and we should see it coming within a matter of days..This is where the real fun begins.
So who's gonna flash their Primes once this kicks into higher gear as high gears are rotating already!?
As soon as I figure out why CM9 is so amazing I'll probably jump on it. I don't know much about CM since the last unlocked phone I owned was the OG Droid and I don't remember which roms I use to install since it use to get changed every week. But im excited to see the development with this.
i'm going to wait with flashing untill there are some good roms!
The Prime is running a fairly stock version of Android and that is all I ever want out of my Android devices. I have used CM in the past (CM7 on my EVO) and while I enjoyed it quite a bit, in a lot of cases there were just <i>too many options</i>.
I know that sounds silly, but honestly a lot of the settings were confusing, either in placement, because settings in one area over-rode settings in another without warning, or because the settings just weren't explained well.
CM9 (or any other ROM) would have to be completely amazing, and that includes all of the Prime's hardware 100% working in order for me to consider going through the bother of unlocking the bootloader on my tablet and flashing a new ROM.
I will definitely be flashing, just for the prospect of having Ubuntu proper up and running.
Root!!! Unlock!!! Fun!!!

helll yeahhh!!!
I had my prime since the beginning of January so i cant return it to the store. I dont have any dead pixels or light bleed. Gps doesnt really work but i havent tried since i flashed to ics. If something was gonna warrant me to return my prime it probably would of happened already. i am itching to get off work so i can unlock and throw on cwm recovery. and just wait for the roms to start coming in.

I did and it's working perfectly so far
I posted some benchmarks on the ROM Thread, it's pretty fast and the OC is nice and easy.
Yeah..im unlocking the bootloader now...literally about to click ok on the EULA agreement.. have you had any issues at all?? have you tested GPS, WIFI, and battery drain and compared it to stock? I'd like to know, thanks.
We will see what we will see when we see it (and not before)
It will eed to be a VERY enticing ROM to make me willing to throw away 10 months of warranty coverage on a device that, let's face it, has has it share of issues. (and then some!)
Frustrating is what it will be for some. Agonizing for others. Then there are those that say screw it, you only live once! What a shame if your bricked your Prime flashing a ROM, only minutes after blowing away your ability to replace or repair it under warranty.
Maannn...im slowly joining the "im considering it" group as I just cant force myself to push the ok button on that EULA agreement for unlocking. ..too much money to just theoretically toss in the trash when i got bills to pay...too many "what if's" honestly Ive had the Prime since early January and ive had no problems with Wifi, bluetooth but GPS is completely non functional..theres some dead pixels in the middle and 3 bright dots on the right side looking like a constellation...I notice them and yeah it did bother that they were there once I saw them but thats not enough a reason to return to ASUS for me personally as everything else works like a miracle..but the what if somthing happens a couple months down the road and im stuck with a dead tablet will make Drew a dull boy. ..thats whats itching my neck and pulling a $500 pay out for another tablet is not going to happen unless its some crazy Tron or Ironman 2 device that has 3d holograms and what have you..i'll give it another couple minutes before i make my final decision..im at work anyways so i'll go ship a PC out and come back hopefully with my final decision..=P
Alright... ima do it! FTW!!!
I admire your gumption, and I don't even know what gumption is

You sir, reflect the spirit of the old west in modern times. Sure, you could stay back east, where it safe as houses, and nothing incredible ever happens, but not you. The wild and wonderful world west of the "unlocked" river holds promise.
I hope you don't end up like the skeleton in "Dances with Wolves"; when they come across it,the guy says: "His folks back east keep asking "Why don't he write?"
Good luck, and I hope you find a ROM to call your own.
"Oh give me a ROM where the buffalo roam, and the deer and the antelope can be found with GPS"...

Hey, sorry for the noob question, but is it in any way possible to run MIUI on the prime ? I read somewhere that it's gone open sorce, so is there any chance ? If it is, I'm definitely unlocking

SGS2 Resurrection by mobiletechvideos.com!!!!

So I just wanted to let you guys know that I finally thought that I saw the end of my sgs2's life last week. It was a sad moment. I love this phone. This was something the I thought couldn't be fixed due to it being the emmc blocks being f$cked.
Anyways. to make a long story short. I was contacted by Josh at mobiletechvideos.com and he said "don't worry about it, i'll fix it for you." So here i'm thinking "this guy''s crazy! He can't fix this!" Well. HE DID!!!!!! He fixed what I thought couldn't be fixed! I now have my sgs2 back to life.
I would seriously recommend sending your devices to mobiletechvideos.com if any of you have any issues. They do all sorts of great things to many different devices. He received my device and had it sent out back to me within hours of receiving it!!! Really fast turn-around time. I've never seen anything like it. Go check out their site guys!!!!

Yes Josh is a GREAT guy. I have had many phone conversations with him with questions that turned into interesting conversations. He had fixed my Captivate after I finally bricked it a couple years ago. I HIGHLY recommend his work on the SGS1 and SGS2. I am sure he works on other phones as well.

As soon as I get some extra cash I'm send in mine to get my USB port repaired. I can only charge my phone its a ***** when I soft brick to get it back. Last time it took me 4 hours to get Odin to pick up my phone. A lot of wiggling the USB cord there...

Why not just buy a replacement and do it yourself? Or buy the part and have someone fix it nearby? It's not that hard. You can buy whole lower assembly and replace it too.

This is exactly what I did. Part took a week or two to arrive -- nothing you can do there, but then changing the part took around 5-10 minutes and most of that was having trouble with the power button not staying put -_- It's really easy and it costs like $10. Totally worth it.

Thanks.
Kinda on the fence about doing it myself I replace the housing on an iPhone 3G and it was a pain in the ass. I'll look into it though.

The part is painfully easily to replace, if you need help I can walk you through it! I just ordered the same part for my GF's i777 so when it gets here I can take pictures of the installation if you want!
That would be perfect.
Looking forward to it.

Thanks for the review Sean. It was an absolute pleasure to help out one of my favorite developers as well as the community at the same time!
Keep up the great work!
I just checked with a local JTAG service. they quoted me $75 ($25 more). i told them that's much more than the price i'd get at mobiletechvideos.com, and to put it in his words, he said "those sites are bull****. they will switch out your parts and tell you they can't fix it."
to that i replied "developers and people from XDA have recommended their service" and he told me "you think i don't know that?" That's where I ended the conversation. I don't trust them at all, if all they do is badmouth people they don't even know anything about.
The guys at Mobiletechvideos are first class. They repaired my hard bricked Captivate, & installed the "unbrickable mod" on it for me. They also repaired my hard bricked Galaxy s2. I'd recommend them to anyone who needed their Samsung smart phone fixed.
