[BOTH][MOD by APP] Nebtop - Universal HDMI Webtop hack - Motorola Droid RAZR

UPDATE
I will keep updating issues about Webtop on my website. I won't copy those analysis or finding to here to reduce redundancy and effort....
Demo Video
What is this about?
In short, you can use this to activate Webtop mode and see the virtual pad on the phone with an HDMI cable only.
In long, this is a runtime MOD that can simulate the docking event of the HD dock so that the virtual pad will come up. Together with the hw.whisper trick, the Webtop option can then show up and being selected.
This mean if you set the hw.whisper manually, you could still see the Webtop option. Be sure to set this using root before plugging in the HDMI cable.
To make this ease of use and able to simulate the docking event, an APP has been written to do the runtime MOD for you.
This app requires ROOT privilege.
Why is it called Nebtop?
Well, everything needs a name.
HDMI Cable \ + Nebtop -> \Nebtop -> Webtop
For sure, the phone must have webtop built-in for this to work.
What is the difference of this MOD comparing to the existing system apk MOD?
Fenny's MOD was the first that allows exactly the same result for various Moto phones. That was the first important foundation for further improvement.
The runtime MOD done by Nebtop has the advantage of not changing anything persistently. So in the worst scenario the kernel will panic and cause reboot only.
Also, this MOD is trying to be universal, for different phones and ROMs that supports Webtop. Even it failed for kernel compatibility issues, if it can be done, it will be done.
Tested device
Razr (Tested by me)
Atrix, Atrix 2
Photon
Bionic
Droid 4
Feel free to try it on your Webtop workable device with an HDMI cable! As the least request, please report whether it works for you and what phone and ROM you're using so that I could keep this MOD by APP improved.
Download it here: https://sites.google.com/site/androidnothize/nebtop
Or search Nebtop in Market.
Enjoy!
If you think that it helps you and would like to support my work, you could always find the latest version from market which is a paid version.
Special thanks
Fenny for the first for the Webtop Via HDMI Without a Dock breakthrough.
Turl from the atrix dev team for the hw.whisper trick.

Just tried it out; although I was using the botched CDMA hacked webtop the trackpad display came up but no function; It does show that it is connected to a dock though which is a good step in the right direction.
Do you have the original webtop files available in a zip format to flash through CWM or possibly full ROM for CDMA Verizon?
* reloaded razrx rom; now webtop shows top left only of my screen but still no control from the phone itself
** reset phone; full screen but still no responsive phone pad
*** loaded nitro deodexed; still no response to the phone pad, displays fine but the new display comes up blank as the rest
**** loaded another stock rooted rom 744; no change in phonepad function; phonepad appears and can rotate, extent of function
CDMA Verizon
Kernel 2.6.35.7
EDIT:
Works fantastically on stock outside of the safe strap rom

works like a charm man !!!!! thank you so much !!!!!!!! wow - thanks man

Ooooooooo my ROM is asia version.....
Do you have the logcat -v time files?
Although it's unrelated to the app, I'm interested to know how did it happen and any work around.

Yeah I can do that, what files do you need?

Will need the logcat -v time when you loaded Nebtop and see the virtual pad on the phone, that cannot rotate or won't pop keyboard or have no effect when moving.......
Also try those home, back, setting and search keys.
And make sure you have a clean reboot before testing since sometimes webtop can fall into an unstable state as I've tried which will only be cleared after phone reboot.

I am unable to generate a log file for you; I even attempted adb shell within a terminal emulator on the phone; [email protected]_spyder:/# basically saying the device is offline, I reset the adb server a couple times and it didn't help.
What works:
Displays the virtual pad and rotates
What doesn't:
The screen becomes unresponsive, the display which mirrors the phones display is blank, and none of the virtual keys work, including the hard keys such as home, back, etc.
I have reset the phone and used multiple roms for CDMA however I can't seem to get it working. I have fixed permissions, each wipe I do data, cache, format system, and wipe dalvik cache (although it gives me an error about E: SD-ext).
If you have any suggestions to get the ADB service back up and recognizing itself I will gladly get you logcat files.
*Side Note: I know it isn't my PC drivers or my Mac; I attempted to get adb running on all including the terminal inside the phone; all say the device is offline, is it possible it has something to do with safestrap?

I thought once installed SSHDroid, you could use ssh/PuTTY to access the terminal from PC, gather the log and redirect to a file, then finally scp to copy the file back to PC.
Or use another SwiFtp app for file transfer as the default install of SSHDroid failed to initiate the scp for me.

SCRIPT: NookColor Auto Config

This script is not compatible with NookColor software 1.01. I will probably not be updating it. All of my work on Gmail, the Market, GTalk, and this script has been rolled into GabrialDestruir's AutoNooter sdcard image. I recommend using AutoNooter as it provides everything my script does with one less step and fewer requirements (like Linux).
UPDATE 12/15/10 - Version 1.2
ADDITIONS
* Modified Droid X Multitouch Keyboard
* Working Google Talk
UPDATE 12/13/10 - Version 1.1
BUG FIXES
* YouTube would sometimes fail to install because the package manager was not running
* Device might reboot in the middle of the script leaving the process incomplete
I wrote a linux script that will automatically do the following:
* Enable APK installs directly on the device
* Enable Live Wallpapers
* Enable Multitouch for certain apps (Google Maps, etc)
* Download and extract the Google Apps (Market, Gmail, etc) to the proper place on your NC and set permissions
* Download and install Youtube
* Edit build.prop and packages.xml to enable Gmail and Market, and Talk
* Generate an AndroidId for the Market. The Android emulator is no longer required.
* Modify the fingerprint of your device to emulate a Verizon Droid Eris running Android 2.1. This will let you access protected apps in the Market that would be otherwise hidden. (SlingPlayer is one)
Requirements:
* Already nootered and have Superuser
This script is intended automate much of the process after the first two requirements are met. I recommend a complete wipe, followed by nooter and z4root and then my script last.
If you are using a version of the SDK older than r08 (Android 2.3) make sure to open the script in a text editor and follow the instructions at the top.
You will need to connect the NookColor via USB. Be sure to eject both the 4gb internal partition (/media) and the sdcard from your OS before running my script!
From a terminal, cd to your adb directory and run these commands:
wget http://muffinworld.net/android/nookcolor/NookColor-Config
chmod +x NookColor-Config
sudo ./NookColor-Config

Press the Home button on your device. If you get the Google Setup Wizard, skip the sign in. Run the YouTube app and hit menu->My Channel. Log in with your Gmail account and press the Home button. Reboot device.
Gmail and the Android Market should work.
Awesome. Thank you!
I'll try before restore mi NC...
Edit:
can anyone help with the terminal stuff?
What terminal application is recomended and what settings are neccesary to input those lines?
thanks!

Are you running windows or linux? The commands listed here will likely only run under linux... and maybe cygwin?
I'm running windows...
Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk
Need a linux partition set up then methinks
idk if Cygwin would work properly with adb, too much stuff to go wrong imo.
I am assuming since it will think it is a Verizon Droid Eris then the NFL app will work also? This will be awesome since I watched part of the eagles game last night on the way home from my hockey game.
Awesome job...
I'm going to work on a Windows version of this script.

You need to have the path to the sdk in your bash_profile.

My experience is once the settings.db change is applied for the App Install mod, the home button no longer works to return you to the home screen. I haven't figured out why yet unless it is a permissions issue on the settings.db file
EDIT: This is for the native NC Launcher. If you choose a Launcher replacement I don't think this is an issue.
windows version. Version 5 still buggy. Please hold off until I get a really universally working version
WOW,
thank you. I'll try it ASAP.
Got it! Thanks

[HOW-TO] Wifi Fix for CM6 [1/2/2011]

DISCLAIMER: Nobody -- and I do mean nobody -- is responsible for a bricked device except for the person attempting this modification. Do not contact me to complain that you borked your Slide by not following instructions.
All credit for this discovery goes to knowmercymod
Certain Espresso owners running CM6 (or CM6 derivatives) may have discovered that their wifi functionality doesn't work as expected. The issue is well-documented on the CM6 issue tracker [issue 2153] and the cause of the problem is known, but there is no source-based solution at the moment. As such, there's no easy way to distribute a fix for working wifi within a packaged CM6 zip.
The issue relates to missing GPL'd drivers for the MSM7227 chipset from Qualcomm that is used in several devices, most notably the HTC Espresso, Legend and Aria. But due to small versioning differences in certain aspects of this chipset, some devices have functioning wifi using the generic open-source SDIO modules and others do not. The permanent solution for this issue is cajoling HTC into releasing this code -- this process is already underway -- but, in the meantime, this thread will serve to provide a temporary solution that is 100% effective.
So let's get started...
Step 1: Downloading the necessary files
Attached to this post are the two files necessary to fix this issue:
sdio.ko
tiwlan_drv.ko
They both come from *stock* Espresso -- the code currently in use in the CM6 repository does not generate fully-functional versions of these modules.
Download the "modules.zip" file to your PC and extract the two files to an easily accessible location.
Step 2: Backing up the corresponding files on your device [optional]
This optional step will walk you through backing up the existing files on your device. This is completely unnecessary as those files can simply be restored by re-flashing a CM6 zip, but I figured that people should get in the habit of backing up stock files before modifying their device.
To do so, execute the following two commands -- both can be done while the phone is booted up or in recovery (if you're in ClockworkMod recovery, just make sure your system partition is mounted -- partitions->mount /system):
Code:
ADB PULL /system/lib/modules/tiwlan_drv.ko [DESTINATION]
ADB PULL /system/lib/modules/sdio.ko [DESTINATION]
To use my PC as an example, I would connect my Slide via USB and enter the following commands on the command line:
Code:
ADB PULL /system/lib/modules/tiwlan_drv.ko ~/Documents/Android/Backup
ADB PULL /system/lib/modules/sdio.ko ~/Documents/Android/Backup
Step 3: Replacing the files on your device
So now we're ready to make the actual modification. First step: boot into recovery. My preferred method is to use the ADB REBOOT RECOVERY command.
Once you're in ClockworkMod Recovery, please make sure system is mounted -- partitions->mount /system
Then you would simply execute these two commands:
Code:
ADB PUSH [SOURCE]/tiwlan_drv.ko /system/lib/modules/tiwlan_drv.ko
ADB PUSH [SOURCE]/sdio.ko /system/lib/modules/sdio.ko
To use my PC as an example, I would enter the following commands on the command line:
Code:
ADB PUSH ~/Downloads/modules/tiwlan_drv.ko /system/lib/modules/tiwlan_drv.ko
ADB PUSH ~/Downloads/modules/sdio.ko /system/lib/modules/sdio.ko
Once you've pushed these files, simply reboot your device and you're done! You should no longer have any issues with your wifi connectivity, including (but not limited to) full wifi tether functionality when using the Wireless Tether 2.0.5 application.
And, again, all credit for this temporary fix goes to knowmercymod (who is far too humble to post this himself).
Saving this space for future updates...
I hope this fixes my frequent disconnects, but on the legend section they fixed the problem by changing the channels to 14 instead of 11, not sure if that will work for espresso.
UPDATE: Works great! Thanks for posting this.
Very exciting news! I'll fully charge and try this fix. Looking forward to using CM instead of stock.
Just pushed the files to cyanoginger 1.1.. wifi and wifi tether both appear to work perfectly now
Cool, thanks for posting!
I did it, not sure if it did anything. Weird thing is, after pushing the 2 files I noticed I forgot to mount the system folder but it said it transfered successfully.. *shrugs*
I think tethering was working before, either way though, it works now
Awesome! Thanks so much for the hard work. I know you guys will manage a perm fix via a regular rom soon. HTC will cough up that source code for ya
Just chiming in to say this works for me. Takes a little longer now to connect to an access point than it used to, but rock solid after that. With s-off, didn't even have to be in recovery, just mounted system rw, pushed files, and rebooted.
Sent from my MyTouch 3G Slide running CM6.1.1
Did it right off my phone with sufbs file manager. Great job hopefully its integrated in next cm build.
I keep getting a "out of space" error when I go to copy the files.
Please help.

If you have not applied s-off patch by alpharev, then you have to push the files while in clockwork recovery, after going to the partitions menu and selecting mount /system. If you are in fact s-off, you have to use a terminal emulator and type [code}mount -o rw,remount /system[/code] and then push the files

CM6 wifi works fine for me, but would these drivers work better with my phone anyways since they're specifically made for this phone?
Applied this on Arayaray revamped which seemed to have spotty wifi for me especially when accessing the market. After applying this the wifi is perfect not a single problem at all now, thanks so much!!
I refuse to connect my phone to my pc. Is there any way to get these files pushed onto my phone? Terminal Emulator work? If not, it's cool. Wifi seems to be working for the most part under CM6.

It depends. These files are taken *directly* from the stock espresso rom and are known-good. If you're not having any issues with wifi running CM6 I don't feel comfortable telling you this will "improve" anything -- but I don't think it would hurt. In any case, if you follow my instructions you will have backed up the original files and can restore them at any time.

Uhhhh -- why? That seems incredibly myopic and weird. You know what -- never mind -- I don't want to know. You can use a terminal emulator on the device to move the two files from your sdcard to their rightful place on /system. I'll leave it as an exercise to the user to figure out the correct commands to do so.
Well I'll tell you anyways... MyTouch Slide always acts funny when plugged via USB to my pc, more-or-less so Windows 7. I could say this is an uncommon issue, but it's not. So it's not weird.
Mine works just fine, whats funny about it when u plug it in? Sorry to bring this up here herbrewtoyou but im curious lol

HD2 ToolBox app and linux Hot BootLoader

After a long time it's a moment to realease HTC HD2 ToolBox app with HBL. Small app that will allow you to boot linux inside android, and display everything on screen or through VNC connection. ToolBox app is also redesigned and added some new functions.
In pack is barebone debian distro with xfce4 interface.
There is also posibility that this app and HBL will work on other phones like leo (desire, nexus one ...)
Everything else you need to know is in Readme file.
Bug reports or suggestions on this thread, i'll answer when i'll get some time.
Enjoy !!!
EDIT: I added Readme file to this post so lazy people can read everything before downloading pack, or asking silly questions!
EDIT 2: I'm currently working on support for sdcard roms and other non-working builds. Also i would like to mention that is possible to run ANY linux distro with HBL (with some modifications) or even to run another android rom!
So consider this early versions only as "technology preview", more support and bug-fixes in next few days...
P.S Thank you all for your support !
Download Link
wow awesome
Does it work within Android like vns versions?
I've been waiting for (something similar, but this should do the work) such an app.
Thank you.
@hd# ..
Read the "Read-me" file ?
been waiting for this too.
But my broadband is down and I've already exceeded my monthly data allowance using wifi tether (500mb !!!)
... might have to do it anyway
Edit; still downloading... I assume there is no sound enabled on this
hi
can i boot ubuntu with it?
hi first big thanks for your hard work.
now i need some help to get linux running from HBL.
i´m using kingdom sense3 rom from dungphp.
i installed hd2 toolbox and copied linux folder to root of sd card.
i installed HBL (Busybos is installed in version 1.19.x.x) i took rootexplorer and give /system/bin/ write permissions for owner/groups/others.
But i need initd support: what i have to do to get this?? or is it on my rom?
please help cause at the moment i´ve bootloops everytime i want to boot linux.
Thank's a lot for this! I've been waiting for this for for a while!!!
So if I understand this right.... which I don't think I did at first..... this is basically the same thing as booting ubuntu and connecting to it with vnc, the ubuntu that is in another thread.... i ask because what I am looking for is usb host support.... which I don't believe is possible with the other ubuntu that boots in android.... and I think if I undestand this right... is not possible with this one either......i do appreciate the work done on this app a lot.... but to me, it's useless unless usbhost is supported because of tiny menus and buttons not being easily clickable with fingers..... so I want to use my wireless mouse that has a usb receiever......
edit: download finally finished, I tried it out.... I really like it, couple questions.... is it normal for shutdown not to work? I chose to boot and show on local screen instead of vnc..... when I did that, it started fine, I messed around a little, then tried to shutdown... it said shutdown command failed or something similar.... then rebooted android..... and when you choose to boot on local screen, is this kicking android out so it's only linux, kind of like haret and booting android from winmo off sd? And last, is it possible for usbhost?
Edit2: I could barely see the text at the bottom of the hotboot screen that says to use log out feature to return to android... I did that instead of shutdown, there were no errors and it went to my android boot animation, then booted back to android just fine.....
Its working well. Thanks .I have the same question as Diesburg does. One more how to make right click.

HBL actually shuts down all android processes (except init and some critical ones) and then switches to linux. It's normal for shutdown not to work right now, in future it will work but for now use log out to exit from linux. USB Host support for now is not possible without modified kernel, but i'm working on custom kernel with usb-host/normal mode switching.
I must admit i didn't have much time to work on this project so many things can be improved, and i hope in fallowing days/weeks i will have much needed time to work on it. So everything is still a "prototype"!
@alltome
99.99% of custom roms have init.d support, just check if you have init.d directory in /etc.
Hi managed to install HBL but when I try to start linux using local screen the screen just hangs on "loading linux..." for ages. Tried vnc but doesn't work either. it doesn't seem to start shutting down android because if I press hardkey back button the phone is normal.
tried changing "writtable" statuses on the mount screen, but no joy. Is this what you mean by " writable /system/bin folder", or must I use rootexplorer?
Many thanks

hey dan1j3l HBL works flawlessly

Sorry guys this no longer works...
Ubuntu removed alot of the files needed to run it on a phone off of their website which is why you are getting the errors on the script to try and install it.

Here's what I mean the website the script is going to to get the files no longer exists...
Heres an example to see for yourself: http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/pool/universe/t/tightvnc/tightvncserver_1.3.9-4_armel.deb
I will try and find a new link to plug in but for now it DOES NOT WORK!

This has been tested on my phone and runs perfectly fine, I am not responsible for you breaking, bricking, or dropping your phone on the floor and causing the USB cable to fall out and blow up your device.
Pre Requirements:
A rooted HTC EVO 3D or Sensation 4G
A S-off'd HTC EVO 3D or Sensation 4G
netarchy's kernel (Silverneedle Test5)
Android SDK
The USB drivers for your phone. (x32) (x64)
A microSD Card
2.3 GB Free of space on your microSD card

The intense Procedure:
1. Download this version of Ubuntu. [Download #1] [Download #2]
2. Unzip the Ubuntu folder to your desktop and if you want, delete the compressed one you downloaded.
3. On your phone go to Settings > Applications > Development and turn on USB debugging.
4. Plug in your USB cable (from your computer to your phone) and mount your (mirco)SD card.
5. Move or copy over the unzipped / normal Ubuntu folder. This will take a long time unless you have a class10 microSD card.
6. After moving / copying that file over, tell your phone to unmount the (micro)SD card / Set the phone to Charge Only mode.
7. Now on your computer, go to where you have Android SDK installed. (Example on my computer: E:\Program Files (X86)\Android\android-sdk )
8. When in the main SDK folder, hold shift and right click a blank area and then click on "open command window here". It should of opened the command line window with the directory of your SDK already put in. If not type cd "C:\Your directory or location of your SDK"
9. Now type "cd platform-tools"
9.5. (Optional) "type adb devices" and check if the computer recognizes your phone. If not you need to reinstall your drivers from the download link above in the requirements.
10. Type "adb shell"
11. Type "su" so we have superuser permissions
12. Type "cd /sdcard" so the directory is changed to the (micro)SD card
13. Type "cd ubuntu" so the directory is changed to the Ubuntu File
14. Type "sh ubuntu.sh" so we can install Ubuntu
15. Type "bootubuntu" to start up Ubuntu. Next time you enter Ubuntu, you just need to type "bootubuntu" from your /sdcard/ubuntu directory, there is no need to run ubuntu.sh again.
16. If you got "[email protected]" in the command line, you have sucessfully installed Ubuntu. If not make sure you installed netarchy's kernel. If it still does not install correctly please try a different ROM, I have only tested this on SteelROM 1.1. *AFTER INSTALLING ANY ROM, YOU NEED TO REINTALL THE KERNEL.*
17. Now type "apt-get update" to update Ubuntu to the latest version. Then "apt-get upgrade" to apply the update.
18. Type "apt-get install tightvncserver" to install the vncserver. (Your telling your phone to read off it self pretty much.)
19. Type "export USER=root" To make yourself a user / the user
20. Type "vncserver -geometry 1024×800" to set the screen resolution you want to display on your phone. Remember you can always zoom in by pinching, so you don't need to make this that much smaller. You should also get prompted to set a password, do so. You will need to remember this password to log in.
21. Download the AndroidVNC Viewer off the Market here.
22. Open the viewer, and put in a nickname, your PASSWORD FROM ABOVE, and for the IP Address put: 127.0.0.1 for the port put 5901. THEN SCROLL DOWN and make the COLOR FORMAT 24-bit colors (4bpp).
And finally, hit Connect to launch Ubuntu on your phone!
For Mac users:
Finder -> Applications -> Utilities (folder) -> Terminal
When you cd to where your adb is located, cd is lowercase as are most all unix commands.
If you're unsure where to go, get to adb in your Finder, right-click, get info, the pop-up will show you the path. Note in unix that the folders (subdirectories) are separated by / and not by \ like in Windows.
Once you're there, the only trick you need to know is to tell unix that adb is located where you are, so you change the adb shell command like this:
./adb shell
That's about it, all other instructions once you're inside the phone shell are the same.
OBTW - after the unzip of the initial file from the OP, just drag and drop the whole ubuntu folder to your NO NAME drive (normal sd card formatting doesn't get a name at the factory, so by now you know that your sd card mounts like that anyways I'd suppose - just put it here in case).

I posted a different script a few pages back that I think will help you guys. I modified it so we should have no trouble with apps in sd.. I finally got a bigger sdcard so I can test this stuff and this script works great. Please guys try this script. If you download it in phone it will change the name and add a bin on it I think, so rename it accordingly and make sure it gets into /system/bin with the right permissions (755 or rwxr-xr-x), then run it

FAQS
FAQS
Do I need to have everything in the android-sdk downloaded and installed?
No, you just need to have the base sdk.
When I tell the command prompt to adb devices, my phone does not show up!!
Make sure you have installed the proper drivers for your phone and for your correct operating system
I'm not getting "[email protected]" when I type / copy-&-paste "bootubuntu"
Well, this could be for a various amount of reasons, first make sure you have a rooted HTC EVO 3D/Sensation. And by root, I mean a full root, not just a temp root or S-off. If you still do not get "[email protected]", flash your device (or go though your data folder and delete all the ubuntu files, then delete the ubuntu file off of your sd card and clear your caches.), and retry the above steps. If the problem still persists, then please PM me with your exact problem.
I'm having issues within the VNC, and I get an error message when I hit "connect".
Make sure you typed your password correctly, the passwords are case sensitive. If you still cannot get in, make sure your IP Adress is set to "127.0.0.1" and your Port(s) are "5901".
The colors on my screen look all weird and disorientated, how do I fix this?
Close Ubuntu, and re-open the VNC application, then scroll down to "Color Format" and tap on "24-bit color (4 bpp)".
The on-screen keyboard does not work and I get a different letter or character for whatever character I type!
The on-screen keyboard will work now, if you install LXDE.
I'm not good with reading text! I need a video demonstration!
For a video head here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbunTRzEQCI
How do I close Ubuntu?
Two options here:
1.Logout of the server and go to your homescreen and push menu, then go to settings, then Applications, then Running Services and close any remaining open part of the server program. The service may re-open later, do not close it though. It won't use up a noticable amount of RAM, just enough to make sure the application opens quick again.
2. Logout of the server and use your favorite task killer to close the server process. The service may re-open later, do not close it though. It won't use up a noticable amount of RAM, just enough to make sure the application opens quick again.
FAQS should be in order chronologically (until the end of them).

Wow this is amazing! Never used linux before tho...
Haven't looked at the bootubuntu script yet, but I know a lot of these couldn't work if you had any apps on sdcard at all. Each app moved to sd takes a loop device.

Just moved partially like moving to the SD or Actually having them Downloaded and Installed to the SD?

Because Ubuntu has some computer applications you can't normally use on your phone. In the browser download Java and check out runescape runs like shizzle but once we get new quad phones out I'm sure it would run fine. lol
This is what I wanted. Million thanks....

Using the stock apps to sd like under manage applications (like the same as is available on a non rooted phone). The script for ch rooting can be made to work around it though. But most aren't.

The only way to get around it atm (at the moment) is to use a bluetooth keyboard.
Very sweet! I will test this tomorrow when I get home. It should work on my ROM as well
Nice....can't wait for the keyboard fix.

Cant keep webtop working stable

Below,I will list the steps I do to setup my webtop,I am using webtop2sd on a 32GB PNY Class 10 card, and used a 2GB Transcend (not sure on class,im sure its old) card to test with, same results with both pretty much,so I think something im doing is causing it to stop working.
What happends when it stops, is it just wont come up anymore. When I plug the phone into my lapdock, I either get a bluebox with an HDMI not found error (I'm assuming from the dock itself), or the red moto logo that just moves around. I would try resetting the phone, and reinstalling the executable through the webtop2sd app, and it still wont launch. This has happened about 5 times so far, I would get it setup how I would want it to be,then it stops working.
So here is what I would do (there is a phone reboot between each step pretty much)
1. Use my PC to partiton the SD card, ~22 GB FAT32 followed by an ~8GB ext3
2. Use webtop2sd to create the webtop, default settings, aside from the missing dock fix, which I only used 2-3 out of the 5 times I ran it
3. Once I am in the new webtop, I would install terminal and synaptic, then reboot.
4. Then I would run the webtop scripts, version 1.4, hitting yes to everything, then a reboot
5. I would check to see if synaptic is installed, the last time i did this, I had to use aptitude to install it.
6. Once I got synaptic up,I would use it to install the xfce4 package. Just about everytime I would go to install it,I would get an error on the "tzdata" package, the only way I could get past it,would be to uninstall tzdata, then most of the time, whatever I would go to install would reinstall it anyway. This does concern me, because when I remove tzdata, it appears to be tied to a critical package, which may be the source of my problem, but I am not sure.
7. Once I would get xfce4 installed,I would add xfdesktop and xfce-panel to the startup list (those may not be the exact package names, there is another thread I reference for that, can't remember atm, nor can I remember the exact name of that startup file, but its on this forum somewhere). I would also comment out the awmdock one and the webtop desktop one as well.
8. I would reboot, and it would actually boot up xfce4 just fine, the only gripe I have,is that I would usually get an error on the trash service needing thunar, when it is already installed. The one time,I was able to install open office, and test out some youtube videos.
9. At about this time, I would reboot my phone to see if it still works, then I would get the "bouncing moto logo of death" on my lapdock screen, and would have to start over.
One other unrelated note, about every other time I would reboot my phone, it would come up saying SIM card not installed, so I would reboot it again to fix the problem. So there were normally 2 reboots when a reboot is required.
So,I guess I would ask a few direct questions about my problem
1. Has anyone else had a problem with the tzdata package? Is there a way around it without uninstalling it?
2. Could the full xfce4 package be breaking the webtop? Do I only need certain packages out of it?
3. Even though I tested this on 2 different SD cards, could my problem be that the files are just getting corrupted on the card? Its pretty consistant though, I canpretty much say "Look,my awesome webtop is now setup how I want it to be, now watch me reboot my phone to see it not work anymore" everytime I go to set it up.
Info on my phone:
Stock firmware, unlocked bootloader, cwm installed (I thought I needed it,but not for webtop2sd) and rooted running latest webtop2sd. I havent messed with the stock webtop on the phone itself, i rather not since I like having it as a backup.
Btw, I am a bit of a linux n00b, I've pretty much just been reading what other people have been doing. Any help would be appreciated, thanx
You sure like to mod the webtop. Lol jk.
I have no issues and I have webtop with the Lapdock with the Ninja ROM. My phone is bootloader unlocked and rooted. I personally think you modded too much if that's possible. If I were you, I would start over and try webtop with stock firmware or a ROM with a fresh sd card. That way you can know if your phone has a hardware issue or if you modded too much. Hope this helps.

I can assure you that your phone is more modded than mine is, since im running stock firmware. What I'm doing is really not that much modding, I'm just trying to get a better interface running on the webtop, which people have posted saying they have the same one working on theirs. Its also not that I can't get it working, its really not hard, just time consuming, I just need to know why it keeps breaking on phone reboots...

I honestly think you should try some of my suggestions. I think starting fresh is your best option. When something doesn't wok right or something goes wrong. Starting fresh can fix your issues.

Have you tried reflashing the phone yet with new firmwares or ROMS?
Sent from my Atrix XDA Premium App
why would I do that when the issue has something to do with the files on the SD card?
webtop2sd copies the webtop files from the phone, to the SD card,so the files on the phone are basically out of the equation at that point. So its not a problem with android, but with the other linux files from webtop on the SD card
Oh ok. Well have you tried an all new sd card yet?

yeah......
I think I fixed it. by finding this little piece of info
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18465066&postcount=3
I believe tzdata has been my problem for he past like 3 days I've been messing with this
It has been running great for the past day. XFCE4 is a large improvement over the standard webtop.
Of course, I ran into another snag, I need to access windows network shares, and Samba doesn't seem to be functioning, specifically, the samba-common package wont install correctly.
This user was able to fix it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19132707&postcount=19
But I have no idea how to fix the read/sym links. Can any linux gurus here explain how that is fixed? Thanx guys!

Yeah his post was kind of light on the details.
What it looks like is that when the /var/lib/dpkg/samba-common.postinst script is run by dpkg --configure -a it calls a program named ucf that in turn wants to run the symbolic link of "readlink" located in /usr/bin.
This is where i got stuck. I am by no means a linux guru.
I tried deleting the symlink to force ucf to use the "readlink" in the path, tried setting the symlink to point to the "readlink" located in /system/bin and in /system/xbin, and set the symlink to the busybox in /system/bin and to the custom busybox webtop2sd uses in /system/etc/webtop2sd but it did not help.
The output of dpkg changed slightly depending on which "readlink" ucf used but still the same error, "readlink: invalid option", and no samba-common.
Btw my busybox is 1.19.3
2.3.5 webtop on sdcard with fixed dependencies
A little help would be appreciated.
I was told on IRC that the actual problem is that the stock kernel does not include CIPs support, which is what is required for connectivity
but I still dont like the fact that samba package is still broken...
I'm using faux123's 0.2.3 kernel though, which might have CIPs support. Its hard to tell from the changelog and features listed in his kernel thread. Btw the 0.2.3 kernel fixes the broken top panel.
