Possible Faulty NAND Storage :'( - Nokia Lumia 800

So I decided to load my Lumia up to the MAX today with music and whatnot and as Zune neared the last 1GB worth of content (not counting the extra space listed in 'about' on the phone) the whole sync'ing process slowed to a crawl then eventually stopped and errored out that the device was unresponsive. So I unplugged the phone, it seemed a little sluggish so I restarted it. I then tried to re-sync the last 1GB of music and again it errored out again after very slowly sending a couple songs.
Has anyone else noticed the last bit of thier storage is all borked up? I suggest everyone try to fill up their storage if they can and see.
This is kinda sad. I mean the 16GB turns to 13.86GB after the System takes it's cut. Then you get about 1GB less in Zune for some reason (even with reserved space set to 0%) so you are left with lets say 13GB, then the last 1GB is faulty! So out of 16GB I really only have 12GB! That's 25% less than advertised!

Return the phone. Mine is filled to max capacity without errors.

The manufacturers can advertise a gigabyte as 1,000,000,000 bytes because, technically, they are correct. A giga actually means "one billion", just as a kilo means "one thousand".
The OS (Windows Phone 7.5 in this case) considers a kilobyte to be 1024 bytes. But to the manufacturers it is 1000 bytes. This is why an HDD can appear to have a smaller capacity...
Think of it this way. In cooking terms we expect 1 kilogram of sugar to be 1000 grams, not 1024 grams...

If only it were so easy. I'm in the US so I can't just walk into an AT&T shop and say "Give me a new one." They would look at me and be like "What the hell is a Lumia?"

I understand this. This is not the problem here. The problem is faulty NAND.

Missing 10mb??

Hi
I bought a 128mb Secure Digital Card from Expansys but when I put it
into my device the Memory on Storage Card says 118.75mb so
where's 9.25mb gone!!!!!
TIA
Charles
The file allocation table (FAT) eats up the rest.
John
And something about..
Secure Digital - This requires space for the "secureness"
So a Multimedia Card may have given you a few megs back..
Its the old saying.
You just don't get what you pay for anymore!
MmF
Missing 10mb
Thanks for the responses.
9.25mb for the FAT, Jeeeez!
Why don't they build them 138mb, and give me what I've paid for!
Rgds
Charles
Actually the FAT does not eat up that much space, not even close. Here's the other part of the reason: A megabyte and a million bytes are NOT equal!
A kilobyte is 1024 bytes. A megabyte is 1000 of those.
The card and hard drive makers say that THEY measure a megabyte as being 1 million characters even. So your 256MB card can hold 256 million characters or bytes.
The computer and PPC however, measures in real megabytes and take that number, dividing it by 1024, to come up with its reported size. Therefore, your card has 256 million bytes, but not 256 megabytes.
They've redefined the word.
Ahh I see now. Thanks Carlos

[Q] [HELP ME] My folio100 has 1GB ram, who's with me?

I've heard that you guys have folio100s with 512MB ram,
But mine has 1GB ram, dunno why....
now that I flashed Dexter's Mod foliomodv1.4,
which is a 512MBRAM version,
Now my OS cannot recognize all of my RAM, it just recognizes 751MB of the 1GB.
the data is gotten from typing 'free' in console mode.
what should I do to find the hidden part of my ram back to work?
I've tried CyanogenMod7, and it's worse, the ram decreases to exactly 512MB.
Thx to anyone who will help me with this!Sincerely!
How do you know there is really 1Gb ram in your folio ? Don't you think it's probably just a bug showing 1 gb intead of 512 mb?

it says so on the label at the back side beside the battery.
and when I'm on native rom the 'free' command shows 990MB free memory, and I always use up to 700+MB ram running all kinds of apps.
but however, as everybody knows, the native rom sucks.
so, is there a way I can adjust the foliomod to yield some more ram?
OK. I was a bit surprised and was thinking that it could be due to a bug.
Unfortunatly I have no answer to your problem.
Is this one of the new batch that was supposed to relaunch in April, or are you just lucky?
I have that label too that says my folio has 1gb ram, Bought my folio about 2 months ago?
How can i find out does it really have 1gb ram?

The native rom will tell you your total ram is 990MB. And you can experience great multitasking !
So, dude, wr are the minority, we should try to fix it, don't you think?
I bought my Folio a month ago and only have 512 Mb reported by Cyanogen.
Do someone know why there are some differences here ?
Mine has 512 mb ram, and 1gb for app installation.
Maybe the inscription in the box is 1gb of ram , for app.
If you really do have 1 gb of ram, lucky you
Ill check that out, ill post my results here then

who would continue with this problem?
I am still confused, I recently have returned to the native rom and obtained the latest official update, it is really stable, with touchscreen responsive, though poor graphic performance(opengl1.1) and wrong direction of sensor in some games.
but the ram reported is the same as foliomodv1.4, that is, 751MB, don't you think it is interesting? it's like the DDR2 ram has 8 blocks with each 128MB, and foliomod has discovered only 6 of them, while Cyanogenmod discovered only 4 of them, that's why Cyanogenmod reports 482MB total ram.
in fact, seen from the dissembly pictures sent from a guy in China like me, there really are 8 similar blocks on the chipboard, with 128MB written on each block as the guy told.
So what do you think, guys? Is it possible to find the hidden memory blocks and get them to work? I think it is highly possible, for different roms report different total ram, and some of them well exceeds the assumed 512MB, that's an implication that some of the folio100 really are bestowed with 1GB ram, rather than 512MB. So why can't there be a rom that makes full use of the ram?
I believe we are the last group of Folio100 users inthe world, so we are gonna stick together to make the most out of our device, guess what, newly published devices mostly have the same hardware as our folio(I mean the 1GB version), except for the screen, but I don't see it as an unacceptable shortcoming. Lower resolution sometimes mean higher performance. I've tried Backbreaker THD running on MOTO XOOM, though the graphics are good, but as I expected it isn't so smooth as running on Folio100. So disadvantages come with advantages, that's why we'll stick to Folio100, at least Before Tegra3 becomes trivial.
Expecting replies from you !! In hope of a better rom and a better tomorrow!
Me too...
CM9/ICM , it just recognizes 512MB of the 1GB.(RAM)
But FolioNotion2.0 recognizes 1G.
I can't paly games like Plants vs Zombies in CM9/ICM ,But in FolioNotion,It works perfect....
I am still confused...
folio100---512M Rom
AS100---1G Rom
Xda Rom just dev for folio100... So,we are just recognizes 512M.
but FolioNotion have recognizes 1G,Why?
1GB with foliomod 1.4
as100 with 1gb ram,and a recently flashed ics rom changed it to 375mb.......those who r confused with the 1gb ram on folio can go to search the pics of disassembly of as100 in some chinese website, after u do that u could fing that there r 8 ram chips installed on the pcb while some of the folio may only have 4installed...
i checked now my folio,...
http://db.tt/dVei7u49 on the top on the right side, is a small sticker 1GB000
CM9 shows me 364M
Is there any way to test it on cm9?

Maybe someone can test it with Ubuntu?
I have the sticker with 01GB000.
I checked the picture of the hardware (ref.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=868617)
On one side there are 4 chip NT5TU128M8DE-AC that is a 128Mx8 DDR2-800
so 128M x 8 = 1Gbit and 4 x 1Gbit = 4Gbit = 512 Mbyte.
On the other side there is a place for additional RAM (see picture BILD2387)
If you have the chips in these place you have additional 512Mbyte of ram otherwise no.
To open this box you have to remove only the back cover and open the box with a cutter under the corner with the arrow.
In my case there aren't additional chips of RAM.
So the sticker 01G000 is not for RAM info.
Sorry.
Bye

I've just checked and there's no extra RAM for me as well.
Thank you anyway for your explaination.
I also have the AS100 model with 1GB RAM. Does any one know how to modify ROM to detect all available RAM?

Storage/memory

Just got a TB yesterday and am perplexed on why there is only 29.71 gb of available on a 32 gb card? I guess a few GB...no big deal but the Internal space available is only 2.47 out of 8. What gives? I maybe have 120 phone numbers.
Thanks
http://blog.premiumusb.com/2010/11/usb-flash-drive-actual-storage-space-capacity/
around 29.7 or 29.8GB is right for your SD card. and the internal storage for apps and everything is 2.5GB, some more is used for the system and firmware. I'm not sure if people found out what takes up the rest of the space though.
A 32 GB flash card holds 32,000,000,000 bytes. Your phone is measuring gibibytes (GiB), but incorrectly labeling them as gigabytes (GB).
32 GB = 29.802322387695312 GiB. The difference between that and the available capacity shown is due to formatting overhead, and whatever's already stored on the card.
One gigabyte is 10^9 bytes (SI), whereas one gibibyte is 2^30 bytes (binary). And the ***** of it is that the larger the number of GB to GiB, the more you seem to be "missing."
Thats cool. Thx. Big learning curve coming from a WOS 6.5 to this android. but I will love it.

[Q] How to recover lost RAM after removing ZRAM

Hi all.
How much is the actually Total RAM on Optimus one.? I have 74 used and 323 free . Totally 397
I remember having more than 410 MB Free Ram before flashing Franco's zram. As the latest kernel doesn't require zram. I removed it using the remove-zram.zip . Expecting to get Back the lost ram. But I still don't get more than 397 . Please help to get back all the ram and can any body please post their running apps screen shot
..to compare it with mine
You're lucky dr.notor isn't here or he would have come up with some sarcastic reply to this question.
Having 13 MB of ram less than normal is no big deal. The system uses the difference (512-397) for its use. And the system usage keeps varying, so you will never have a constant amount of free ram available. I seriously doubt zram is the problem. Also, our phone has tons of ram so stop obsessing over it. I'm quoting a paragraph from an article on lifehacker.com:
The problem is that Android uses RAM differently than, say, Windows. On Android, having your RAM nearly full is a good thing. It means that when you relaunch an app you've previously opened, the app launches quickly and returns to its previous state. So while Android actually uses RAM efficiently, most users see that their RAM is full and assume that's what's slowing down their phone. In reality, your CPU—which is only used by apps that are actually active—is almost always the bottleneck.

Why The RAM Shows only 2.6gb

I know, I must be missing something. Any Dev ,
Please can you explain
Some memory is simpy reserved.
Much like on the S5 depending on firmware you could have anything from 1.67gb to 1.83gb showing despite having 2gb.
I posted this elsewhere but basically some portion of the total RAM is reserved and mapped to your GPU since if doesn't have its own ram. Happens on regular PCs and Macs too. The ram is mapped so essentially apps can write to that reserved space and the GPU can read it and process. I wonder when we'll get GPUs with dedicated RAM? That's going to be awesome.

No, that is why a kilobyte normaly is 1024 bytes but hard disk manufacturers at a very early stage in PC history silent agreed on 1 kilobyte being equal to 1000 bytes.
