Was this ever resolved? I too am having this exact issue. This is my third Windows Phone device, but the first to have this problem. It has no issues connecting to the Zune software. I am also able to dev unlock it. But it will not let me change from guest.
NVM - Found the solution in another thread. Thanks!

But the brief mention of remote drives above lead me to the solution. I do have a network drive, but it was connected just fine, so I didn't think anything of it.
But then I remembered that I used to have another hard drive in this machine way back when I first setup the Zune software, and I set my Pictures in the Zune software to come off that drive. It was V:\images, but without that hard drive in my computer now, there is no V: drive. The problem is that the Zune software seems to break in a rather unpredictable way when one of the paths for your collection libraries isn't valid. The larger problem is that from the Settings->Software->Collection screen, there's actually no indication that there are any problems. It's a silent failure occuring somewhere in the Zune software that leads to this nasty behavior of being stuck in Guest mode. Worse is that if you try to remove the offending entry, but don't add a new one, and just click OK back through the windows without looking too closely, the Zune software doesn't make any changes. If you don't provide a valid path to replace the invalid one that it had, it just leaves things as they were before you removed the bad entry.
So, I removed the entry that I knew was bad (even though the Zune software wasn't complaining about it), and added a new entry that I knew was good. I clicked OK back out through the windows, then clicked on that "change sync relationship" button again, and followed the steps, and BAM! No more guest relationship!
Just to test it out (because I am a tester after all) I "forgot" the device in the software, messed up my library locations again with a temporary mapped network drive, and replicated the bad behavior and the fix again.

Is this for just for wireless syncing or with cable also?

The relationship applies to both. Either the device is a guest or it is not - regardless of how you choose to connect it.

Windows Mobile Security?

I'm looking for some screen locking and encryption software for Windows Mobile 6 (or 6.1).
I'm looking for software that will lock the screen and buttons when the PDA is turned on, and require a password, either PIN or button entry.
I would also especially like a poison pill where the system would hard reset after a number of password failures, or failing that, at the very least it would autodelete the internal memory and PIM data. It would also be great if such a program had an OEM install for adding to one of DCDs ROMs, but that's more wishful thinking than an actual requirment.
I would be willing to pay for this software, but freeware is my first choice for obvious reasons.
Thanks to anyone who can help out.
Currently running Telus P4000 (aka Titan) with DCD 2.3.2, but willing to reflash to get the security software runing if necessary.

I don't know about a program will hard reset the phone on failure to authenticate, that is a hard one. But your phone should already have a security feature were you can add a pin to lock your phone or add a longer password.
Every time you boot up it will prompt you for a password.
built in security
The built in security can be bypassed by connecting to activesync, which is one of the reasons I want to replace it.

How can you bypass it through active sync?
I mean when I set the password and connected through active sync, it wouldn't sync or read unless i typed in the pin on my phone. It prompted me first and if i was unsuccessfull it would kick me off and not let active sync work.
PIN entry on PC
It's also possible to enter the PIN from the PC side (at least with WMDC on vista), which means it's easy to brute force the PIN.
There are programs that can do this, matter of fact, there are security programs out there that can remotley flash your phone should it ever get stolen or lost. Normally they are set up that you send a certain text mesage to your phone and it wipes itself clean. I just did a google search and found this: mSecure PDA
Features:
Function
Enforces security policies Windows Mobile, Palm OS and Symbian devices
Broad platform support including Windows Mobile, Palm OS
Reliable and automatic data protection, without downgrading the user experience
Protection on device or removable media using centrally-controlled, policy-based security
Remote data destruction if device is lost, stolen or subject to misuse

The price is ok, if I only had to buy it once that is. It seems like most of the software that does this is enterprise only.
There's another one called SafeGuard PDA but they discontinued the single user version before they got to WM6 compatability (and the WM5 version absolutely kills a WM6 device).
WM5
For anyone running WM5 who's looking at this thread someday, PocketSecure is a great program that does pretty much everything I was looking for but sadly isn't compatible with WM6 (or at least, the version I'm using anyway).
And I thought the cold war was over.
It seems if you guys want to get some James Bond gadgetry on your phones.
I understand this because we keep highly value data in our phones, but even if we do lose our phone they are is always a way to crack any locking mechanism or security measure if they have physical access to your device.
I mean if the other person is smart enough to do so.
True enough
I'm not planning on keeping national secrets on my PDA, it's just that I would like to keep some phone numbers on there that I don't want someone stumbeling upon if I'm draft enough to lose my phone or someone is quick enough to lift it.
The annoying thing is that there's a lot of decent software like this for Palm platforms. (TealLock, etc).

All security measures should start at the physical level. By not allowing others to steal our phones or lose them, but if you feel that you need software to secure your phone in any way check out.

Sorry mate, I'm not sure if I'm just missing something there or if I didn't what I'm looking for properly...
I've looked through the handango store and while it's got plenty of good software for encrypting a file (word doc etc) and plenty of good stuff for storing extra data like passwords and credit card info, all I really want is something that will lock the PDA and the built in PIM (contacts mainly) inforamation.
I'm *not* looking for a way to encrypt my storage card or individual files in main memory (and I've already got a password managent program that encypts that data and syncs it with my laptop).
P.S. It's not like I don't plan on keeping my phone secure, but the idea is that good security STARTS with physical security, it doesn't end there.

Hmm I have looked for some apps that describe your needs and found some, but they are for WM5 ...... you can try it out and see if it works. As some cabs from WM5 still work..
Well here is another website that might help out..
http://pocketpccentral.net/software/security.htm
Other then that I would recommend using google to search for your needs due to the fact that not many people here post about this.
http://www.truecrypt.org the windows version can install a program to mount a truecrypt encoded card on your PPC, but so far I dont think it can encrypt on it.

[Q] How do we protect our Android device from the CelleBrite UFED?

Someone mentioned this in another thread, but this is a topic that should have it's own separate thread.
Some of you may have already read the news: Michigan: Police Search Cell Phones During Traffic Stops
Don't assume it won't come to your town.
I can't say I plan to do anything that would warrant police suspicion, yet I don't like the idea of anyone being able to easily pull data from my device. And we know cops won't be the only ones with these devices. So I've been wondering, how can we protect our Android devices from the CelleBrite UFED?
Check out this video that shows some of the features it has, keep in mind it does much more and can even extract DELETED data.
See the company's product page here: http://www.cellebrite.com/forensic-products/ufed-physical-pro.html
This research paper talks about the CelleBrite UFED and other extraction methods. (CelleBrite UFED is talked about starting on page 9.) I doubt there's a means to prevent all of those methods given some involve long term handling of the device, but CelleBrite UFED can extract data when a device is retained by the CelleBrite UFED user for a short period of time. It looks like HTC Android type devices can only be extracted from via the (micro)USB Port and it requires USB Storage and USB Debugging turned on. The CelleBrite UFED has to gain Root Access. It can get by screen passwords and root even a device that was not yet rooted.
There's another thread where someone was requesting a ROM that would not work with the CelleBrite UFED. I'm not sure how to make a ROM or anything else that would not work with the CelleBrite UFED without limiting certain features we all may use from time to time.
Over on Slashdot, someone said they hacked their device (Nexus One) to not do USB client mode. This is another option that would limit some features many of us may use.
So, how can we protect our privacy and our data? Does it mean sacrificing some features like USB storage mode?
The biggest problem is what's missing from Android itself. Meego might be protected but not Android.
You would need an encrypted boot loader that retains root for some users.
A kernel and os files that support different users so the default user is not root like Linux and a prompt with a password for superusers not just an Allow like now for Android.
Encryption libraries that would support truecrypt encryption of both internal and external (SD card) encryption in toto not just individual files.
A true trash system that overwrites files like srm in linux and sswap for wiping the swap file after every system reboot.
Ultimately I don't see it happening. In theory if you were running Ubuntu on your phone then yes cellbrite would just crap out not knowing what to do with your phone. Same possibly with meego. But then no real app support, no navigation and driver support is crap even for ROMs using the same os let alone a different OS like true linux.
It's amazing how many don't even bother deleting thumbnails hanging around on their computers or securely wiping files on their computer. Same with swap files retaining passwords or even website cookies that have the same password as their computer.
Best thing to do, don't keep anything that could be bad on your phone. Use a cloud system or home server sync that requires a seperate login every time and keeps no local files. Or as I do, encrypt the hell out of anything you find valuable, which currently is only my complete backups...
Sent from my Xoom the way it should be, rooted and with SD card.
This is where that cheap Boost Mobile phone comes in, or any other prepay phone. Just hand the officer that one. Store your personal data on your smartphone.

Hello, All. This is my first post at xda-developers!
Since I'm new to Android, data security has concerned me. Climbing the learning curve of rooting and tweaking my SGH-T989, I've focused on control, security, and privacy. So far pretty good, thanks largely to members' posts at this site. Thank you very much!
Then this thread crushed me. Visions of "1984", "THX 1138", "Terminator", etc.
I considered the suggestions here. Thoughts about the OS seem right to me, but that's beyond my abilities. I did try following chbennett's advice: I enabled encryption in my backups and moved them to the internal SD.
But I don't yet know how to do the 'home server / log in on demand' scheme for contacts and calendar. I will appreciate any help with that.
Meanwhile, I looked for a way to make a 'panic button' that would let me wipe my phone immediately. What I chose was making a contact whose phone number is the USSD code for Factory data reset.
Maybe Tasker, etc. could streamline this approach; but my trials showed that, unlike MMI codes (e.g., to toggle caller ID blocking), USSD codes cannot be submitted to the OS indirectly. So swiping a contact, direct dial shortcut, etc. did not work. On my phone, all that worked was either 1. manually dialing the code, or 2. dialing the contact name, then tapping the contact.
So the routine to use this 'panic button' is:
1. launch Dialer
2. dial the contact name
3. tap the contact name in the search results
4. tap "Format USB storage" in the "Factory data reset" dialog
5. tap "Reset phone" button in the "Factory data reset" dialog.
It sounds clunky, but it's actually pretty quick. I named the panic button contact "XXX" to avoid confusability when dialing (it needs only "XX" for a unique match.)
If you can suggest improvements to this scheme, or think it is misguided, please let me know. Thanks.
Any updates on this? I'm curious as to how to guard against ufed.
I think an instant hard brick option would be better so theres nothing to recover as i dont believe the factory reset is a secure wipe
Possibly a voice activated secret phrase or keypress u could say/do super fast in a tricky situation that autoflashes a corrupt/incompatible bootloader and recovery to device after secure superwipe that should stump them for awhile
im still interested in this i disabled usb debugging on my phone but unsure if the UFED can still access anything on my ICS full encrypted passworded evo3d im assuming they could dump the data at most but i highly doubt they could access the decrypted data unless you used an insecure pass
If you have encryption enabled for your data partition, then all you need to do is to turn off your phone when you see a cop. If they take it from you, they can turn it on and hook up their device, but they will only be able to snarf the system partition, which does them no good. They'd need your password to mount the data partition.
If you look around on this forum, you can find the steps necessary to switch the lock screen back to a simple pattern lock while leaving the disk encryption enabled.
Are you sure Cellebrite and UFED or w/e can't access encrypted data partion? I know it can take an image of the phone "hard drive". They then can run password tools against image to unlock it no?

I'd like to know about this too. I am about to set up encryption on my device and I'd like to know more about what type of attacks it can beat.
Edit to add: I assume brute force attack protection is like any other type of encryption.....dependent on the strength of your password. But, assuming we all know that already, I'm still curious about this.
If the question is how to protect your device when you think someone would scan your phone, you'd have to have some sort of inclination that a scan is about to happen. I'm assuming this is many people's concern as they're considering wiping their device through a quick process. In that scenario, just turn off your device. Unless you warrant suspicion of something fairly bad, they wouldn't be confiscating your cell phone.

We all wish all law enforcement was just and honest, but so far in world history that has not been the case. Even a pretty woman may have her phone scanned by a curious cop snooping for pics.

I would still like to know if there is an answer here...
So I recently had some dealing with assisting in a Cellbrite search. We initiated and enlisted the help of law enforcement for an employee who was doing some illegal activity which is not relevant to this discussion other than the person used an iphone. Anyway, the investigator came in and wanted to know if I can enable the bypass for the automatic screen lock in 5 minutes because when it locked, it disabled the Cellbrite copy.
Now, couple things here, he was only doing what he was "allowed' to do in the local municipality, and he did say they sell a more expensive Cellbrite device which would be able to crack it. I did find it interesting that the simple corporate Activesync policy I have set up was actually having this effect. Anyway I removed the policy and it worked. Funny thing is he could have done it himself had he known anything about that kind of thing. He was presented to us as an expert but I guess that mainly covered a basic Cellbrite expertise.
So, I do think encryption would be a great answer as the partition would be hard to bust in to. Nothing is impossible but I would rather not smash my phone on the highway next time I get pulled over so I would like to know definitively that this is the right approach. This is definitely not paranoia as there are at least 3 states where it looks like it happens regularly.
Time to look at a 2600 group for stuff like this I guess. I am early in my investigation

Xperia S with Mac OS X Discussion

Anyone owns a Mac and the Xperia S?
My experience with the phone (firmware .73) and my Mac (OS X 10.7.3 Lion) is particularly bad:
Unable to perform drag and drop media transfer like previous Android devices.
The Official Mac Bridge is very buggy (Even on latest update ver2.1), will stuck when transferring lots of file, and does not work with lossless music
Unable to perform USB tethering
Don't get me wrong, the phone itself is great, but I just don't understand why it works bad on a Mac.
Please share your experience and possible fix, if any.

I suspect a very high proportion of Mac users would choose an iPhone so the number of S users on OSX would be very small.
I have Mac but only sync one playlist at the time if I click on too many playlist then the phone just hang. No option for back up
Use wifi file explorer pro or swiftp to transfer files over wifi.

I aslo switched from iPhone4 to Xperia S... and have exactly the same problems with copying music using Mac bridge... I even posted on the Sony forum for this and got a reply that asked for more information.. and after i gave it never heard from them again...
I now use double twist and air sync to copy music to my phone.
Mac bridge seems to work ok on other media files just not mp3's.
Really lame on Sony's part.
I'm using bootcamp, just so I can use the XS to it's fullest.
Here here!
I'm on a Mac too.
And yes. Mac Bridge is just too slow...
it's very funny, it's like they gave 0 support to mac users for this... very disappointing.
OK. So apparently Sony DID try to fix some bugs in the Mac Bridge.
Ver. 2.1 (current) added more options on the Mac Bridge, and it seems the playlist problem works better. Although OS X's Image Capture will not read the device, there's now a direct import photo to folder in the latest version of Mac Bridge.
I am still unable put my entire playlist into the phone though, as the Mac Bridge hangs again when it has transferred about 80% of my songs. I also don't seem to find a workable wired solution for drag-drop file transfer.
Finally, was anyone able to perform backup through the Mac Bridge?
I tried two times and every step return "Failed".
Come on Sony... :-(

I thought for awhile that Sony Bridge hangs when transferring songs, but it works for me. Give it a little patience
The problem i have though is that when a new song is added to the playlist and Sony Bridge detects it and sync it to the phone, the phone itself doesnt update the playlist but will have the new songs added.
I was able to perform backup through MacBridge but it seems like it uses a lot of the Macs resources when doing this.
Mac users are always eternally complaining about one thing or another.

I hope making the switch from IOS to Android will reveal something to you Apple fan. The simple truth they make very basic devices which only work well if you stay within the jurisdiction of Apple.

Stop using a minority device and wonder why developers don't spend enough optimizing their kit for this deluded minority.

Right, just because I complain about *SONY*'s software makes me another mac complain retard, huh?
To be honest, I've been on a Mac for more than a year, with no problem on both hardware and software at all, while I clearly remember my Windows 7 desktop hangs occasionally just for many basic stuff. My last Android device works great with my Mac too, so it's not a Mac problem in any sense.
I don't really want to argue with you about OS (it's pointless) here, but please let me remind you that this is a Mac discussion/support thread, if you have nothing useful to say, just leave, no one force you to reply.

I'd rather have a platform that hangs occasionally than one that throws up issues and doesn't work at all with a lot of stuff. If you haven't had any issues with your Mac, that's probably because you've so far stuck to basic computing.
Like I said, Macs regularly throw up issues connecting to third party hardware and I know because I spend many hours each week dealing with these problems.
There is absolutely nothing you can say to change this opinion.

I had been using Double Twist with my other Android devices but found that the Sony didn't always show up in the menu, so I started to use Isyncr. It works well enough but some songs for some unknown reason won't make it through. I had to remove some songs from my playlist that were causing this and then it was ok. But Double Twist does not see these playlists now so I have to use the built-in app, Rocket player, or PowerAmp. I just use the stock music app now.
As for file access, I happen to be running Parallels, and therefore I can mount the phone on my mac, and as my Windows Desktop can "see" my Mac disk, it's very easy to access the phone. But I agree, it's stupid to have to do this.
The Sony Bridge was goofy for me - I would see for example a duplicate Music folder and music folder (note the case difference) and one folder was spawning duplicates. Deleted one and the other disappeared too! Who knows was weirdness was happening. So I didn't use it. As for photos, I just copy manually; forget syncing to iPhoto, but that's how I always did it for all my other devices.

So i got myself an OBD bluetooth scanner and the Torque app...bloody brilliant.
So much information!
anyway, i cant seem to get it to upload data logs to the web viewer?
i have my account created and setup correctly but nothing in the web viewer when i log in.
Does anyone use the app and have any ideas on how to get this to work?
Secondary i have e-mailed myself some data logs and cant get them to open properly?
I cant seem to get Track Recorder to work with Torque Sync software, it stucks at Searching for Torque

I imagine the particular posters have found answers to their problems seeing as this thread
dates from 2014 but I thought it might be worthwhile answering all the same as I ran in to the same niggles when I began using this app so if anyone searching these issues subsequently may find some worth from my reply.
First of all as a far as experience and knowledge is concerned. Firstly with cars;fixing, modifying, engine management tuning, obd2, diagnostics. Basically my auto knowledge is extremely wide and extensive from approx 35 years of obsession and getting stuck in an the deep end whereas my knowledge and experience of computers and smart phone tech is on much, much shakier ground
In fact, for those of my vintage. i.e late 30s,early 40s remember when we were kids. and programmable VCRs were the height of cutting edga technology. Well I'm like the way our parents and grand parents were then. i.e pretty much baffled by it and even following the instructions it was hit and miss whether you actually managed to record that film rhat was on at 4am lol.
So for the second issue brought up by the OP it doesn't matter whether you email yourself the log file or not (I found the few times i tried it that the file wouldn't attach and when it did the problem was the same anyway) you need Microsoft Office or any other type of office suite to view the files. On the pc i have Microsoft office but had to download an app to my phone to view. csv files. Again an office suite that not only displays. csv files but puts them into a spreadsheet format is required.
As for the first issue it's preferable in every way to view the site. on a pc because on the phone display the actual box to sign into is off screen and takes a little bit of zooming out and seaching to find, the same goes after you have signed in when another box appears with a list of the logs files recorded and the tab to choose it. This is where my lack of fundamental computer/web knowledge comes in. I can't tell you why it doesn't sit nicely inti an easily accessible mobile format but it doesn't. Once you've found the first sign in box/pop up it becomes simple, annoying but simple.
As for there being nothing after signing into the webview site successfully all I can assume is either you've no log files to view which you should have if it's all been set up correctly, including choosing which PIDs to send to logfile or the pop up/window where you click on your logfiles is right off screen and has to be looked for. Of course you don't get that problem if accessed using your desktop.

Can't change location or screen orientation

Hi all,
Hope I'm posting this in the right place. If not, please move.
I have Remix_OS_for_PC_Android_M_64bit_B2016072603 installed as a virtual guest in Virtualbox 5.0.24_Ubuntu r1083 with Xubuntu-core 16.04 as the host machine. Using a Toshiba Satellite Pro L510. Took me four days to nut out how to get to this point, but installed and booting and stable now.
My issues:
1/ Location: When I try to run an app from Play Store it thinks I'm outside of Australia/New Zealand (the app I'm trying to run is specific to those regions). I'm in Australia, the app works fine on my phone (am logging in exactly the same way).
(* Update: I installed GPS Status and it tells me GPS is not switched on. Was hoping to then change the location with Fake GPS, which I also installed. It won't do anything with same message: GPS not enabled or similar.)
2/ Resolution: The screen defaults to portrait, as expected I suppose, but I have a 1366x768 monitor and it doesn't fit in the screen. Consequently, I have a scroll bar because as Virtualbox Guest Additions is not compatible with Remix OS at this point there is no mouse integration (I need to hit Right Control to use mouse in host and same to use in guest again). I need to press a bunch of keys to just scroll the screen up and get back to where I was going. :|
Other than that, all working great, Remix OS is great, thanks to the team that created it. The main reason I was wanting to use it is to use this one app on my computer (AFL Live) and plug my computer into the TV. I don't use my phone for anything other than that one app, SMS and the occasional call so I am by no means an Android junky. In fact, before this, I knew very little about it (but a lot about Linux/Ubuntu).
This install has been a quest, a learning curve, and these are my last two hurdles so I'm calling for help if it's out there. Trawled the net, tried some things, but have hit a brick wall with these two problems.
My first post so not sure of the protocol. If these two issues should be the subject of two separate threads, mods please advise and I will edit accordingly and create a new thread.
Tnx in advance.
(* Further update: Just having a read of this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/remix/remix-os/remix-os-installation-rooting-t3293769
Wondering if rooting the device would allow me to change any of these, in particularly, the location to Australia where it should be, or switch on GPS so my app can see where I actually am. I'm presuming it thinks I am in the Cocos Islands or somewhere else!)
(* And further update: The screen resolution was as easy as typing Alt+F1 to launch a terminal then 'wm size 1366x768'. That looked terrible, though, so changed it to 1048x768 (from memory) and it is good enough, though not perfect. I may be able to get closer with further tweaking. Now the last, and most important, hurdle to leap: How do I get Remix OS, and more specifically my AFL app, to know I'm in Australia. Frustration. It's taken about ten days, on and off, to get here and still not quite where I want to be, but hopefully my travails can help someone else along the way ...)
Gave up on it. If anyone comes up with a way of running Remix OS in Virtualbox and setting the location, please post. Guestadditions would probably fix it and maybe one day ROS will be compatible with it.
On the other hand, I did learn a lot more about Android than I cared to know, but am now thinking about buying my first ever Android tablet to do the job with a USB/HDMI adapter.
