[Q] Soft bricked my phone trying to flash CM7, please help. - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

First post here
Tried to flash CM7 on my s2 and after selecting reboot in the cwm menu, the phone won't go past the samsung galaxy s2 logo. The phone won't go into download or recovery mode using button combo press. I've also tried the one-click unbrick tool, which simply fails.
Not sure what do here.

Download mode should work :/

Thanks man. Just tried that
It seems that odin will not detect my phone. I'm reinstalling the samsung usb drivers to see if that helps.
I am happy that I am at least able to get the phone into odin download mode. So not all hope is lost I would think.

Anyone have any other suggestions? I'm downloading the android SDK to get to try ABD right now to see if I can connect that way.

Sometimes Odin is picky, and wants to be opened first. Then enter download mode.

Not a problem! Almost impossible to hard brick this phone. And even if you somehow manage to do that, there are ways to get it out (Depending on what you did). So rest assured, and also get use to battery pulls

And I'm back to stock Now it's off to try to CM7 on there once more. Lesson here is that you need to double flash cm7 before rebooting.
Will be there to help you build that house...

Should've been able to get into CWM to do a second flash even if you accidentally rebooted.
Sometimes CWM from a boot-hung device can be tricky, the following should work:
Hold VolUp + VolDn + Power until the device restarts (will be around 12-15 seconds for the long-hold-power reset)
Once the Samsung screen reappears, let go of Power, keep holding VolUp + VolDn until CWM appears

[Q] Can't get into the download mode in my TMOUS Vibrant

Hi tehre, i'm having problems to get the phone into the download mode, i'm hoding the vol down key along with the power button, but the only thing i get is the phone showing Samsug vibrant and restarting over and over again.
Am i doing something wrong? I just downloaded an app from the market called wuick boot, i tried selecting the bootlader option, but same thing, the phone just reboots, and i get back to the phone menu.
Any help will be more than apprecciated.
Thanks in advance!
Is your phone rooted? I had the same issue and resorted to just doing it by using a terminal command on my rooted phone.
If you have a terminal app, just do this:
Code:
>su
#reboot download

Just so happens I nearly bricked mine last night. Couldn't even get into recovery mode or see the charging icon when I plugged it in. Here's what I did (after much trial and error):
1. Removed SD and SIM card
2. Removed battery
3. plugged the phone into USB
4. held down vol-up and vol-down
5. popped the battery back in while holding vol buttons
...and that got be from looking like I was dead in the water to download mode and a stock ROM flash.

Work for New Vibrant?
Hey guys, I have a new Vibrant, Im guessing its the new batch of Vibrant because I can't use the volume up+down +power to go into recovery or download mode. I just wonder if this also works for my version of Vibrant because I did a lag fix and it bricked me... Therefore if this works, I would be so happy that I will cry. =( I'll try it anyways, but if anyone have a similar device to mine, please let me know I would love to get some info on it. =( I just needs it to be in Download Mode to flash it with ODIN back to stock. =)
By the way, would you mind telling me what stock rom you use? and software to flash it? Thanks a lot! I appreciate all of your help! Im really desperate to get my phone back to work... its been showing up vibrant screen make a start up sound and go blank... so scary...

Did you remove the sim? Is the phone plugged into a pc via the usb cord? From my experience, the vibrant will only go into download mode if it's plugged to a pc.
I think I also got the new batch of vibrant. Maybe we should get a list of release date and serial of the phone. Maybe we might be able to figure out which phone can or can not use the vol down + power. Mine is 8/13/2010 rs 170-0412

I will try that as soon as I get the phone back. My cousin has it now and he's trying to look for methods to help me fix it too. =( So i will go get the phone soon and try your methods of removing everything. I just wanted to ask you guys to see if you guys had that recovery mode function (volume up _ volume down +power) disabled by T-Mobile. Because if all of you guys have the new batch of Vibrant then most likely mine will have a chance too. =) But thanks for the reply and the tip I will definitely follow all of your instruction and update further about this case. Hopefully it would work with your methods for the new vibrant batch. No one here seem to post much threads about the new batch.

Yeah I definitely got the new batch since I cant use that recovery mode function like everyone else here does. I also got mine in August, 8/28/10. I dont have the box and phone to see the serial right now since it was taken to my cousin house to try and figure out a way to get it into download mode. =( But from the looks of it, anything from August is disabled... wonder hows the July one. My brother has a Vibrant from late July, which is July 23, 2010 and his recovery mode isn't disable at all. =(

I have another story. I bricked my Vibrant trying to go back to stock using Odin it hung on a step. The brick to where the (Cell Phone ! Computer) comes up. After 30 minutes of panic trying to get my phone to go into download mode. I opened Kies mini, unplugged my USB connector plugged it into a new USB slot then hooked up my Vibrant and re installed the drivers. It found it. But I still couldn't do anything. So then I closed Odin reopened it unplugged and then re plugged my Vibrant back in. It found it on a COM port so then I tried a restore from there and it let me do it. Wow! I am amazed at how hard it is to permanently brick this phone.

You can't give up that quick. Come on man. Took me over 30 minutes one time to get in download mode. Tried different techniques. Try restarting your pc or maybe even a different odin version. Make sure odin is on before trying to get in downloade mode. Best way for me to get in d/l mode is to press both vol. up and down at the same time and then plug usb in. Other techniques are out their also.

Thanks everyone for the help, my phone is working again!!!
Definitely the wrong section. Here's a couple tips/ideas though. The easiest way to manually get to Download mode it to:
1. Pop the battery, wait a sec, pop it back it.
2. May be easier to leave the battery cover off, we'll get back to this.
3. Make sure your computer is powered on, and the USB cord is plugged into the computer.
4. Without pressing the power button, hold down, volume up and volume down at the same time (this may be easier without the battery cover. This takes a firm grip sometimes, if this fails that's what you did wrong.
5. Still without pressing the power button, plug the other end of your USB cord into the phone. It should boot up into Download mode in a matter of seconds. If not, try again, you probably weren't holding the volume buttons properly.
Also, possible reason it stopped, did you put the .tar into PHONE instead of PDA? That will cause it to error midway like what you described. Otherwise I would definitely re-download/install your USB drivers with the one from this site, I find they work better. Also re-download the .tar .pit and even Odin for good measure. Check out the Vibrant Bible, that thread is your friend. Good luck, hope that helps!
EDIT: Guess I was too slow haha. Gratz man.
Best way is to use usb jig.

not sure if this is true but i read somewhere on xda that samsung will replace your phone up to three times if you really do brick your phone it will not turn on or load download mode or recovery.
In my experience..Vibrant is very close to unbrickable unless you smash hit...

[Q] factory reset a 2.9.2 super clean froyo phone ... possibly bricked?

Hi,
I am not really savvy with Android and I think I may have possibly bricked my phone. My friend installed 2.9.2 super clean froyo on it for me. I wanted to erase all the data on my phone (giving the phone to my brother) and pressed factory reset.
At first when I tried turning the phone back on it was stuck at the samsung logo. Now it's stuck at a battery sign with a charging image. I tried holding down the volume rockers and rebooting but it doesn't work.
Is my phone dead? Any suggestions on how to undo all of this ...? Many thanks in advance.

Hey there,
I tried looking and going through your guide (and other guides on here) and one of the very first steps is to get into download mode. I've tried all the following:
Taking out battery, plugging in, holding the volume down
Holding the volume down, plugging in, putting in battery
etc...
You name it, I tried to access the download mode. Still nothing. It's stuck at the:
phone... /!\ ...computer sign and I can't get to the Android builder "Downloading" screen.
I was only trying to update the phone using the Samsung Kies to 2.3, everything was going fine until there was no progress bar and nothing was happening for 30 minutes.
ANY help would be appreciated, especially if someone knows a trick to getting into download mode because that's a key element
Thanks in advance

sounds like you bricked your device. I think there is a dl mode push thru heimdall, but I'm not familiar with it...also there is a jig out there that jumpers the usb port. I'm only familiar with
odin, so this is all the info I have...good luck.
I see stuff about Jigs and stuff but I have no idea on where to start. I see some one posted something about getting it from ebay?

Flashed 4.0.3 phone bricker, rebooted and cant get past boot screen.

Basically what the title says, flashed phone bricker and everything went great. Rebooted my phone to go into CWM because it still had some issues and I just wanted to go back to 2.3.6 for now. The phone froze and now I cant get into CWM or even download mode. What can I do???
...
And so it begins...
If you cant get into recovery using the key combo, use a jig.
More details, when I plug in the phone in an off state, a battery shows up on screen but the ring is not spinning.
Did you read the name of my Rom?
Its meant to brick your phone.
So what steps did you take to flash...
adb can work too
Sometimes you can do an 'adb reboot bootloader' to get the phone to boot normally too.
Just wiped/factory reset and installed it with Clockwork to install. This started happening after a reboot.

Yea, I don't see how you could have bricked it by that...

2nd. To get into download mode have your phone powered off and hold both volume keys, while your holding them down plug in usb...should go into download.
Still just getting the frozen battery charging screen

[HELP REQUEST] Rooted I9300 stuck in CWM 5.8.4.0

I had problems with my rooted S3 (International) earlier today, and that's why I thought that flashing a lower version of CWM may fix my problems. However, flashing CWM 5.8.4.0 actually made things worse.
I am currently stuck and cannot navigate out of CWM. Pressing Power or Home don't do/select anything, and browsing the menu is next to impossible, too (menu disappers).
Phone is not recognized by adb, it does not show in Windows Explorer either. Got a "failed to install" when I connected it.
When I try "adb devices", I only get "list of devices attached" without the phone showing.
Whenever I reboot [after bettery pull], I get back into CWM again.
CWM does not react to button presses as it should; doesn't go anywhere no matter which keys/buttons I press.
Battery pull doesn't do anything; neither does Power+Volume up or down
Looks like I am screwed... am I?
Anyone has an idea how I can get out of this and back to either CM9, or install a newer version of CWM (over the obviously dysfunctional version 5.8.4.0)?
Thanks!
flashed touch recovery?
No, it's not 'Touch'... I wish it were that simple...

pull battery, insert usb jig (buy it), insert battery. gambate!
Mmmh... You sure about that?
I used to have an USB jig for a different phone before... No idea if I still have it somewhere.

Certainly worth a try... Thanks!

Nope, battery pull/power+vol don't work. Tried that already. Does reboot straight into CWM again (no download mode, or else)

looks like your final hope is usb jig, or samsung center..
Nah.. My "final hope" will always be Obi-Wan Kenobi...
Get the feeling that I f**ed up a perfectly fine $600 phone. Great! :banghead:
What's the deal with the Samsung website?

Looks like your much luckier than I am. Can't believe this really happened to me. It's a first for me, though
I guess I'll try some more "rescue stuff" when I get back home. Don't have any way to tinker with the phone here at work...
Thanks, guys.
[SOLVED] I9300 stuck in CWM > Back in ODIN mode!
Geeez... That was a close one!
Apparently, and in order to get into ODIN (Download) mode on the S3/I9300, one has to press & hold...
1.) Volume down
2.) Home button
3.) Power
Once I did that, my S3 (I9300) booted into ODIN Mode. [ Big sigh of relief!!! ]
I thought it was just Volume Down + Power... but apparently I was wrong. Guess that happens if you don't use Odin for flashing all the time.
Can't wait to get home and flash a proper recovery, so I can get my phone back into work mode. It sucks not having a working phone, trust me on that... ;-)
Thanks for your input, guys!
