[Q] Question about Kernels - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear Forum,
I have rooted my Galaxy S II one year ago using Odin and a custom kernel from the forum here. Now I tried to update from 2.3.3 to 2.3.5 or 2.3.6 but it does not work. So I think the kernel could be the problem and wanted to flash an other one, but here comes the question.
My phone says that I have the I019XXKDJ baseband and I9100XWKDD-CL kernel version. In the Post of CF with the list of roms I could not find these versions ( endings? )
Could someone please tell me what to do?
Best regards

Looks like you have the I9100 model so after reading the first few posts from the link above, select a firmware to download and flash via Odin.
They are stock official firmware and once your in download mode and ready to flash with Odin I don't think the kernel will affect things.
Be prepared to wipe or factory reset just in case. CWM nandroid backup and titanium backup etc.
After that checkout chainfires cfroot kernels to root your phone.
That's what I would do anyway.

No if you flashed you lost Kies update path .

As said you need to read the post regarding kernel versions in CF root thread .
Root + CWM .

[Q] Queston about rooting on 2.3.5

I just updated to firmware 2.3.5, and my Baseband version is I9100XXKI4 and my Kernel version is I9100XWKI8. Build number is GINGERBREAD.XWI8.
So if i am going to flash with Odin, what do I flash? I have found a insecure Zip-files with XXKI4 and another with XWKI8, but I am not sure wich one of them would work. I rooted the phone on 2.3.3, and then I flashed the kernel, but now i'm not sure, since XWKI8 is my baseband version. I know this is a little noobie, but I want to root my phone and not brick it.
So my question is, flash with XWKI8 or XXKI4

The easiest way to root your phone is to flash CF-Root kernel.
Here is Chainfire's thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399&highlight=CF+Root.
Please read first post.
For your current ROM, you should flash CF-Root kernel for XW_NEE_KI8 from 6. post.
That's all !
After flashing this kernel (by using PDA section of Odin), you will see a yellow triangle when booting.
In the second post, Chainfire described how to get rid of the yellow triangle after rooting.
The needed stock kernel for your ROM can be downloaded from Intratech's Official Firmware thread here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278.
You can use the XWKI8 stock kernel from the second post.
The password to extract the file is also written in the post.
But you do not need to remove the yellow triangle.
It is optional and up to you.
Good luck !
Thank you!

Yes, zergRush exploit (=> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1319653) method is also an option to root the phone.
Intratech has described this method in his first post as "Quick Root Guide".
Very "elegant", because you do not get a yellow triangle and the binary counter won't be incremented.
But as you are a "Noobie", I recommend to flash a rooted kernel (such as CF-Root kernel) to root your phone, which is more simple.
If you read Intratech's Quick Root Guide and feel confident to root your phone like that, then use this method.
If not, stick to Chainfire's CF-Root method.
It is your choice.
Well, I'm not that noob, I rooted my HTC Desire and SGS2 on 2.3.3, but I was just a little confused with this one

Back to stock galaxy s2

Hello how i can back to stock my galaxy s2? i rooted and put checkrom works nice but i want to learn how get back to stock again im confused
I didnt wrote down the pda version and kernel before install checkrom and rooted what recommend me to do?
thanks.
Just flash official firmware package from Intratech's XDA firmware thread via Odin.
Use your Product Code (sometimes found on your box) on the Chek Fus Download website to find your original PDA etc (if you're not 100% sure) or search the first couple thread posts for match.
Follow his flash instructions and you're done

you can get your stock firmware from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
It also includes instructions of using odin and flashing the downloaded firmware .... if you are rooted take a nandroid backup every time you flash custom from stock ........ that ways you'll always have a backup of the stock firmware ......
Yep, my post is rather incomplete, forgot to add the link cheers

So I just came across this and got to this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 however, I am SO lost. I don't know what firmware I'm supposed to download. Yes I'm a noob, but seriously trying to figure all of this out so help is greatly appreciated. OH and I'm trying to get back to stock in attempts to get CF root to hopefully get cyanogenmod to install rather than abort the installation.

Actually all the firmwares provided in the thread are stock ..........
If you are a Noob i would not recommend cyanogenmod though it is pretty good but i've heard it's for advanced users and stuff ........ why do you need to flash stock is my primary question ........... use this thread only http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
You need to update latest firmware for your region as a KIES update is there / on the way?
Find out the latest firmware for your region to flash via http://fus.nanzen.se/ it will provide you with the stock firmware your phone should have after selecting the specific region.
You need to update latest firmware irrespective of region (like Me)
Just download the latest firmware available in the 2nd or 3rd section of the thread. in this case 2.3.6 (KK2 or KK5).
In case of any more issues post back.
so I tried kk2 and kk5 and kk2 gave me no service, and kk5 failed to even install. I'm at a loss. I really want CF root, but can't install it on the stock eg30 that I've been using as my stock rom. SO what next? Any other way to figure out which stock firmware from that link will work for my phone?
hello???
Is there anyone who can help me figure this out?????

yes you can but have a look in the general forums and you most than likely find a rooted version of the rom there. or just wait till later on today to flash it when Intratech gets his hands on it and chainfire releases a rooted kernel if there is not one already...have a search
What is new after Intratech gets to it?

probably comes with a bootloader that will not cause any troubles to your phone..think that it is..anyway just look on general section and there is threads there with more explanation and download links were you can download the rom if you so badly want it mate and just ask there if kernel has already been rooted or just check chainfires thread for the latest kernel that is rooted
this is rooted kernel from chain fire for the LPJ

[Q] brick bug

Hi .. i originally rooted my phone using " zirggles " ? it was something on you tube i found ! well it worked untill my s2 updated to 4.0.4 then i lost part of my root. i still have titanium back up ... but if i run root checker it says i don't have proper root. and some apps i cant download. i have checked and i do have an insane chip ! i want to root my phone properly again, but i know with this chip its risky. would it be ok to flash 4.0.3 firmware .. would this get rid of the brick bug ? if so is there somewhere i can download the firmware ? im curently on XXLQ6 or is there another way of rooting my phone properly again ? i have super user on the phone but it says outdated binary. please be understanding as i only joined yesterday and i am a total noob to this all

4.0.3 firmware is safe, the issue exists only in stock 4.0.4 ICS and if you are on 4.0.4 ICS don't perform any type of wipe, reset etc... Flash 4.0.3 firmware or lower version's like gingerbread or any custom rom with custom kernels, also custom kernels for 4.0.4 version's are safe theoretically but i still wont recommend it because I have seen people brick their phone from CWM, so the problem is with the kernel which has eMMc cap erase command, most custom kernels don't have it, but be warned an old Siyah kernel has it so use the newest one.
For the sake of safety i recommend that you flash 4.0.3 via Odin.

dwnld the tar file of siyah v4.1.5 (for galaxy S2) and flash the same using 'Odin', since its the best way ma8
Latest Siyah 5.0.1 should not be a problem as well. Using it for a week now.

Use the latest Siyah its pretty amazing, i consider Odin as the safest method, even though if you can obtain Siyah as a zip file you can do it via CWM which is also a pretty safe and easy method for noobs, if you downloaded a tar flash via Odin or Mobile Odin.

[Q] How to flash ROMS.

Hello.
Right I posted previously on how to root my S3 GT-I9300 (UK) and successfully did this with CFroot and Odin. The main purpose of this thread/question(s) is how or where to find a stock (untouched) 4.2.2 rom and untouched radio for my model and how to install this, also, I want to use CWM recovery also but I don't know where to get a stable version from (I find easy to nandroid backup, and flash, experience on a HTC Desire HD)
Once I've got the latest ROM on my phone (I'll probably loose root) but is the root procedure the same as it never changes in other words can I just re-root using CFroot and Odin ?
Could someone please guide me in the correct direction thanks.
Also if this helps my build number is: JZO54K.I9300XXEMC2 and running stock 4.1.2.

you can just flash 4.2.2 leak f/w from sammobile.com || yes, you can re-root using CF-ROOT. :good:
1. The 4.2.2 firmware has not yet been officially released for GT-I9300 and if you use leaked versions, you might experience problems/bugs.
2. Download Latest CWM from here: [RECOVERY] ClockworkMod Touch 6.0.3.2 for GT-I9300
3. Yes. You can Re-Root using CF-Root and Odin.
basics stickied in General section free to read this week .
