[Q] EXE vs. ZIP Help Needed Please. - HTC Amaze 4G

I am on WIND how does one use an .exe rather than the .zip files to go back to an original rom?
PH85IMG.zip's
Ruby_Videotron_CA_1.46.1530.1.exe
MD5:acb4ec2da972ee0126fd81c7b8604b07
Ruby_WIND_1.45.1500.2.exe
MD5:e11e7c73ea20484d203510c2dfd41d17
Ruby_Tmobile_1.43.531.3_PH85IMG.zip
MD5:d8b60b6c88dff8a62adf772665fa658e
Ruby_Telus_1.41.661.3_PH85IMG.zip

I believe that the .Exe is a ruu (rom update utility). Basically you download it, plug your phone to usb, wait for it to be found, double click the .Exe. It will flash back to stock everything (at least it does on the sensation and other htc phones I've had). The .Zip is basically the same, except you put it on the root of your sd card, boot to hboot and wait for it to verify and flash. I hope that this helps.

[Q] Stuck in Bootloader after Trying to Install New RUU

I'm stuck at the bootloading screen on my Rezound, and I'm lost as to what to do. I was attempting to load the new RUU on my device but obviously, something went wrong. I believe I renamed the wrong file to PH98IMG.zip and screwed something up. I have tried to push the correct RUU file through ADB, but I can't get my device to show up. Is there a way to access my sd card so I can put the correct RUU file on my device?
Micro sd > sd adapter > USB card reader.
Or put your sd card into another phone and download the correct ph98img.zip file
Thanks. I was wondering if there was a way to access the sd card from the bootloader menu, but I guess I'll have to go out and buy a sd card reader tomorrow. Now I just hope I didn't permanently mess anything up by flashing a ROM file as PH98IMG.zip.
If you can get to bootloader it is recoverable
Ok, try this, while connected to a pc. Pull out sd card & battery while in hboot. Go to fastboot and make sure you got fasboot usb showing. Unlock bootloader(unless your on eng hboot or patched jb's hboot), download AmonRA 3.15 renamed to recovery.img, then do "fastboot boot recovery.img", but before pushing enter. Replace battery and sd card.
That will get you to where you can access the external SD card with its USB mounting.
or
You have not run a RUU. There is no RUU for ICS yet. A RUU is a Rom Update UTILITY (meaning, it is in the form of an EXE file run from a PC with the phone connected; and it does quite a bit more than a simply PKxxxx.zip flashover file).
Oddly, if you actually had a RUU, it would probably solve your problem.

Nice try.
PH98IMG.zip is contained within the RUU.exe....when extracted it is named Rom.zip. this file contains everything found in the PH98IMG.zip we flash in the bootloader. We just rename it it to the ph98img.zip
however, it is still an image file. It needs to be flashed, either the Utility, fastboot, or bootloader.
Without the image the Rom Updater Utility would be useless.
What ever name you want to call a ph98img...is still an image file.
But the post was good reading but still does not mean you proved a point or proved me wrong. or that it is not an image file.
Note: this post is not trying to say anyone is wrong.....

Anyway, there are 3, and only 3, RUU's for the Rezound:

Can't seem to get anyone to understand that; but like I said, its a losing battle.
If there WERE actually a RUU, I would gladly run it, because then that would properly replace all part of my GB install with ICS. Flashing this PHxxxx.zip image, will not do so (hence the need for the "old firmware fix").

What parts are you saying do not get replaced? I flashed the new leak yesterday specifically to upgrade from the gb firmware and it works fine without a patch. I'm running Nils ICS Business 3.4.
Just wondering.

i am stuck in the bootloader and cant get out. adb wont see it but i can see it in device manager. i f-ed my phone up so i relocked and ran the latest GB ruu and it failed and now i am stuck in the bootloader. it does say fastboot usb. any help would be great
Figure I'd try posting here, rather than start up a new thread. I tried looking for my specific problem but couldn't find it. Anyway, new to HTC and Rezound, coming from a rooted Droid X, so I'm familiar with flashing roms. My Rezound is completely stock.
I downloaded the most current ICS leak, RUU_Vigor_3.14.605.10. I put it on the root of my sd card, renamed it, and held power and down button. The phone loads the PH98IMG.zip for a few minutes, then proceeds to checking the PH98IMG.zip for a few minutes. After this is all done, I'm on the bootloader screen. Where to go from here? I thought the phone should have automatically rebooted? I clicked fastboot, then restart, which just brings me back to GB. I'm obviously missing an easy step here. Do I go into recovery, or somewhere else?
Thanks in advance guys. I hate being the new guy, late to the party.
Seemed to have figured it out. Had to re-download the leak on a different computer, and now my phone is updating itself. Weird. Finally get my hands on ICS.

I've flashed a couple PH98IMG.zips and they were for different things on my phone. one was a splashscreen and the other was an update (ICS Update to be exact). now isn't that supposed to be an RUUs job? to update the phone? there are a couple ways to update the phone, one being a new leaked stock rom through recovery, and another through hboot with a PH98IMG file.

[Q] Is my rezound dead?

I dropped my Rezound in water a few days ago. I immediately pulled the battery and put it all in rice with a few dessicant packs. I waited a few days and put it all back together. It won't boot past the white HTC splash screen, but I can get into the bootloader. I downloaded the latest leaked RUU as a PH98IMG.zip and put it on the SD card. Unfortunately during the update process the battery went dead. After charging the battery I am trying to flash the PH98IMG.zip again, but it stops and freezes at the very first step (the bootloader). Is it dead or is there a way to recover from this? Thanks!
Edit: I forgot to mention it was bone stock before this. The bootloader was still locked and it was just like it came out of the box.

Did you remove the SD card from the slot while it was airing out? I'm wondering if there might still be some water trapped in there. Try swapping SD cards, see where that gets you. And instead of trying to install a ZIP file from your SD card, I would try flashing your phone with a RUU EXE install via ADB/Fastboot. Like this one.
I did remove the SD card also. I will try the exe and let you know how it goes. Thanks!
That didn't work for me. I launched the exe while the phone was in fastboot, and when it tries to reboot the phone to the bootloader, the phone does not come back on. If I launch the exe while in bootloader mode, it says it cannot find the phone.

Don't have it infront of me, but if you Google it, you can remove the rom.zip file from the exe and rename it to PH98IMG.zip and put it on the SD card and run that directly from the hboot.
That's what I'd try next.
Sorry I am only on my phone and can't get you a guide. Should be able to Google it though. When you run the exe it dumps the rom.zip and a bunch of other files into a temp folder, you basically just pull it out of that. Rename, etc.

How do you flash an RUU when s-off

So now that I'm s-off, is it easier to flash an ruu? Can someone explain?
I believe I no longer have to relock the phone. True?
Will either sd card be wiped in the process?
Can I go back to earlier ruu's if I want?
Thank you.
Rezound, s-off, loving it.

no you dont have to relock anymore..sd will be wiped as before..you can go to any ruu you like..flash process is the same for ruu
The only plus for an s-off device as fast as RUUs go is that you get not only to upgrade but also to downgrade, which on s-on devices would cause a brick.
So if say you tried the 3.14 RUU and wanted to go back to GB you sir can.

Ofcourse not, you've to flash the RUU from the bootloader.

1. Won't have to re-lock
2. It will wipe everything but external SD
3. Can do ANY RUU
4. Offical RUU's are .exe flies you run on windows while phone is plugged in.
5. All the leaks you put as Ph98img.zip 's and you put them on root of SD then boot to bootloader.

# 4 .... Thanks! a ruu is an executable pc file. The only thing a have is a rom image. The last Ruu was gb.

Yes the .exe RUU's are offical the ph98img.zip's are leaked RUU's but they both pretty much do the same thing.

RUU
You would do a true RUU executable in Windows with your phone in fastboot.
The misnamed RUU's that are actually PBxxIMG's are flashed on startup into bootloader.
A custom ROM is flashed in Recovery with install from sdCard option.
Im s-off running Nil's business ics v2.2 sense 4.0, gb patch/sdcard fix. Ill be honest, the phone works absolutely better than ever right now, but, im intrigued by the fact that im still on gb firmware and may be missing out on the full potential of the latest firmware. Does the patch replace the need to upgrade alltogether? If not Is there really a big difference between gb and ics with the performance/radios?

The gb patch/sdcard fix is the same thing, right? I think the Aroma installer installs the patch..
Anyway, yes the patch corrects for the firmware/ics rom difference. The change in performance/radios is subjective. I didn't notice anything different. Of course if s-off, you can always go back. My recommendation is go ahead and upgrade. You will sooner or later.
Well for some reason if i just flash the rom without the gb fix the phone will bootloop, naturally; but when i flash the gb patch i lose my sd card. So i have another file i downloaded(i dont remeber where from) called the sd fix that i flash last that does the trick. Come to think of it, i never tried just flashing the sd fix in place of the gb patch. Now that you say so they might be the same thing i might just have the wrong gb patch, idk. Buuut, its funny, you dont even know me but its like you know me so well, lol. Im gonna go ahead and fix the problem at the source by flashing the ics RUU as soon as i get a chance tonight. Its inevitable, im curious and this will bug the heck out of me until i do it. Just like s-off did.

1. Flash the 3.14.605.10 RUU as PH98IMG.ZIP in bootloader.
2. Boot to stock ICS leak, don't set up, connect to PC and
3. Rename the PH98IMG.ZIP file, then either
4A. While still connected to PC, reboot to bootloader, go to fastboot usb and flash Amon Ra 3 . 15 recovery (see that xda thread for file & fastboot command) OR
4B. While still connected to PC, go into drive mode and copy Amon Ra 3.15 flashable package as PH98IMG.ZIP to sdcard2, reboot to bootloader and it will flash recovery.
5. Reboot to stock ICS ROM, connect to PC in drive mode and Put Nils' Business ICS Sense 4.0 v2.2 on sdcard2,
6. Reboot to recovery and flash Nils' ROM
Some people encounter card access problems after the firmware update. I did on one Rezound but not the other.
If you do encounter the problem, copy your card contents to PC, reformat it in the Rezound then copy back the contents.

I never used supercid on my Rezound or any other handset (I haven't been on the Rezound since March). Not sure whether you need to do it. If you're S-OFF, you should be able to run the RUU for your version of the Rezound. There are official RUU's available for the Rezound, which is more than I can say for my current handset.

I'm pretty sure you need to re-lock your phone and then flash a RUU. You will be on un-rooted, bone-stock ICS. I recommend that you use a T-Mobile RUU.
To do this you need to have ADB installed on your computer. Open up ADB in command prompt (navigate to the platform tools folder) and then hold shift and right click. You should see an option to open a command Window.
When it's open type in " fastboot oem lock ".
That should lock your bootloader. You can now download a RUU and flash it in the bootloader. Just rename it to "PH85IMG". It should be a zip format. Put it on your external SD card and let it flash in bootloader.
You can also find RUUs here. Chose the one for your native carrier, if your phone is unbranded, I recommend the T-mobile one.

I'm sure that whether your bootloader is (re)locked or not, it has to flash the ROM anyway. The problem will come later when you try to boot the ROM cause it will fail.

Try to reflash the RUU and if problem persist then the problem should be in your battery.
And ya check the md5sum of RUU( no need to worry more about md5sum but you may check for surity)

Well it should work exactly the same way. You still have to rename it to PH85IMG since it's device specific not carrier specific.
But if your RUU is an exe I think you have a different type of RUU. For that type, it's a software that updates your phone connected to a USB. For that, you need to connect your amaze to the computer and run the RUU installer. This might be your only option if wind doesn't have any other RUUS.
Another easy way is to go to the development section, and look for the thread by krook which has a collection of RUUS. It's on the 3rd page I think. Download the latest ICS one, rename it to PH85IMG and put it on your external SD (not in any folders) and it will flash in the bootloader.
There is also the Windroid toolkit which just got fixed and updated so that can help assist with the file pushing.

If it's an exe (the one that has an installer and all that Jazz), then no. Just connect your Amaze to the PC and let it do the work.
For the manual updating method, you need a micro sd.

[Q] RUU to 4.3 results in white HTC screen

Hi,
I see a few people have run into the endless white HTC boot screen problem and it seems the fix is to just run the RUU again - this isn't working for me. I came from 100% stock with the latest OTA and everything. I've applied the RUU more than 10 times at this point from different computers, it's always successful and the most frustrating part is that the RUU can read the proper version from my phone (it says "upgrade from 4.13.651.3 to 4.13.651.3").
I also tried to go back to 3.15.651.16 with the RUU, but it stops with an hboot incompatible error.
Any ideas?
Have you tried just rebooting phone when it gets stuck, I've had a few roms stick on splash and after a minute or so I just force a reboot. I know it sounds odd but that's what I've always done rather then reflash the rom and after a reboot or 2 it comes up. You can also try holding volume down on the splash, it forces the rom to boot in safe mode.
Sorry I thought you mean after ruu instead of during. You can try reinstalling htc drivers and connecting it in fastboot first, it will force windows to install the drivers that might otherwise not install. Also viperuu has been said to work with the new hboot.

Have you tried running the update files as PJ75IMG.zip files from an external SD card? It'll require running the RUU .exe file until it opens to the first screen with the device icon on it. Then navigating to your OS temp folder (usually by clicking "Run" and typing %TEMP% to open the folder). Then you find the newest folder and inside one of them will be some rom_01 and rom_02 zip files. Those are what you need. Those can be renamed to PJ75IMG.zip, placed on external SD card and flashed through HBOOT. Hopefully doing them that way will get them to apply correctly.
Thanks for the replies, I appreciate the help!

You were correct, it was after the ruu runs successfully that the white HTC screen sticks. I tried the multiple reboots, but still no luck.

I got the files, but sorry, I'm a little unsure of which one to rename to PJ75IMG.zip or what order to flash them in.
I also spoke with HTC support for a while, but that didn't really help other than them promising that the "Special Projects" team would call me in the next 7-10 days...
I was perfectly fine with it wiping my data as 99% of it is in the cloud anyway, but I certainly didn't expect the official update to put my phone into this state.

They are numbered, aren't they? Do 01 first, then 02. They will both get flashed the exact same way.
Thanks! I was not aware of that trick. Doing that led me down the path of seeing one of the images was corrupt. From there I did what I should have started with, I downloaded the RUU from HTC again. I got a file with the same byte size but a different MD5 signature. This file took much longer to run and successfully updated my phone!
The winning MD5 for those keeping track at home was: c6ac16fcdd39818f43158329ebdad957
Shame on me for not trying this as one of the first items, but shame on HTC for not validating their own images before pushing the update to the phone.

Well at least you got it to run...lol I have the same MD5 and it wont run past the first screen. All other RUU's i have on my pc run just fine so im at a loss.
OK, I just followed links thru 3 diff of capns threads. Isn't there still a way to change partitions (properly) just doing it as a PJ75 zip, or is PC now required? As my access to one is limited and sketchy. Sorry for not keeping up better, been trying to maintain 3 devices, work full time and parent. And keep up with game of thrones. Lol. Either way, my apologies for not being as current as I usually am, and thanks yo any who respond.

Hey, what's up, Scott? Yes, there are PJ75IMG.ZIPs floating around. I think that Yankees has a link in his thread. If you still have a hard time finding everything, I can upload mine and send you a PM.

If you have both files, why would you need to run the RUU at all, for starting purposes? Couldn't you just run both PJ75 zips and have nothing to do with .exe/PC?
And what should flash first, the ROM or FW (and yes, I know, capn, they're numbered,...that's NOT the answer I'm looking for, I'm trying to find answer that actually means something, as I'm trying to make sure I understand this process.)

The purpose of running the RUU.exe is to extract the zip files. If you already have them, then you are correct, you have no need of running it.
I thought this was explained in my thread that has the firmware update, but maybe it isn't. The first zip is just the firmware which repartitions the device for the new layout, and the second zip is the actual ROM. The first zip and my firmware zip are essentially the same. That's why I have it listed as being required in order to flash the new format ROM.

Been awhile with this device. Sold it via Swappa. Customer cannot connect to Sprint network. Found that after she tries activating it she'd needs to reflash the RUU via a bunch of reading. She doesn't have a Win PC. So, this is my option I guess. So after pulling the 2 ROM files via the RUU, rename the 01 file to PJ75IMG.zip, placed on external SD card and flash through HBOOT....what is the process exactly in hboot? I don't remember. Thought you booted to hboot and it automatically finds and flashes? Then....do you power down/reboot/can you access sd remotely while in hboot to rename 02 file to PJ75IMG.zip, and flash? Thanks for any input. It's hard cause I don't have the device.

Once the phone gets to HBOOT, you have to press one of the Volume buttons to confirm the flash. Once the flash of the first zip is complete (and while the phone is still in HBOOT), you'll need to pop out the SD card and rename the second zip, replacing the first zip on the root of the SD card, and pop it back in (while still in HBOOT). Then press whatever volume key it says to reboot, while holding Volume Down, to get back into HBOOT to flash the second zip. Once that flash completes, you can press whatever volume key reboots the device and it should be back to full stock.
