Anyone else notice that transferring files is pretty slow when hooked up through USB to PC? Took about 1 minute to transfer a folder of MP3's that is 133mb in size. It only takes a few seconds on my class to micro sd.
I just tried writing to the same micro sd card while it is in the tablet. It said 27 minutes to transfer a 4.3gb folder. When I removed the micro sd and used the adapter it is saying 5 minutes.
Was your microSD card in the Prime when you said it took only a few second or did you plug it directly in your computer without going through the Prime.
Cause I'm pretty sure internal memory should be at least as fast as a microSD but maybe there s an issu with how the files are transfered in PMP mode.
Also you should check with one big file (like a movie) and multiple small file (music/images files for roughtly the same weigh as the movie) and see if it's really the writing speed or because there is multiple files in queue.
I've had the opposite experience. I transferred over a 250mb movie to the prime that went super fast compared to transferring a comparable sized movie to my phone/sd card.
Writing a file to the micro sd card while it was inside the prime was a lot slower than using the sd adapter and transferring it that way.
Writing 4gb video to micro sd while inside prime = 27mins
Writing 4gb video to micro sd using sd adapter and not inside prime = 5 minutes
This is a class 10 PNY. I get 11 write and 21 read on sd test.
Writing 133mb folder of mp3's to prime internal memory = 1 minute.
Writing same folder to sd card using sd adapter = few seconds.
Whenever I connect the prime to my pc through usb it is very slow transferring files. Could it be Asus sync that is slowing things down?
This doesn't happen when transferring to my galaxy s II through usb
When plug into a computer. The prime appear as a media device. You don't have to mount anything. The storage, both internal and external, are readable by the PC and the Prime at the same time.
I know it behave like that with the original TF and that it is also slower than directly plug in the microSd on the computer.
That being said, I don't remember it taking 27 minutes to copy 4go (and I have a class 4 microsd) so I guess there's a problem somewhere.

Could you also check the speed of copying files from internal memory to microSD in your Transformer? That way you will check if the connection to microSD is slow or not.

I actually had like 4gb of music on my micro sd that I wanted to move to the internal hd. So I plugged the prime into my pc (it shows up as a device and I double click it to see 2 drives. One for internal 32gb and one for the micro sd) and opened both drives. I dragged the music folder from the micro sd(inside the prime) to the prime internal memory and it said 17hours to transfer lol. It was insanely slow. I feel like instead of showing up on Windows 7 as a "portable device" it would be better to just show the drives. Like how the drives show up when you plug your phone in and enable usb file transferring. When I open "portable device - Asus Transformer prime", I can only access one drive at a time. If I open the internal hd folder and transfer a file it won't let me open another window to access the micro sd inside the prime. It gives me a message saying the device is busy.
My current desktop setting is i7 920 oc'ed to 3.8ghz, Asus rampage extreme 2 mono, 6gb corsair dominated, dual ati 5870. So I know it's not my pc that is slow lol. It transfers files really quickly to my galaxy s II. It must be something with my prime that is causing it to write really slowly.
HC uses MTP for internal storage, which is substantially slower than UMS when transferring many small files (music) as versus a few large files (video).

Haven't connected my Prime to the macbook yet, but for the first transformer you needed to have the application ANDROID FILE TRANSFER installed on the Mac computer.

perhaps you need to reformat your microSD card to a format class speed that is compatible with Transformer Prime.
After reading this person's Amazon review on a Sandisk 32GB microSD card that I think it is the same type that I purchased from DailySteals I learned something very useful as it relates to the different performance of these microSD cards.
- What is even more useful was a criticizing comment to his review from a poster named AshenTech listed 4th down who explained how you can save money on these priced /performance cards by simply reformatting them and he referenced an SDformatter.

It is extremely slow for me. I can transfer the same music files wirelessly to another device in significantly less time.
I gave up trying to write files through the USB cable. I just use SwiFTP now for all file transferring

I use a 64gb Flash drive formatted to FAT32 thru one of those cheap ebay usb adapters and it works fine. Comes up as UsbDriveA.

Supposedly you can, however, in order to accomplish this, first the external HDD would have to be formatted in FAT32, or possibly EXT2/3/4; something which is natively recognized by the 7.7 Also, since the USB adapter only supplies a minimum amount of power (150mA I think), the HDD would have to be externally powered, either by its own power adapter, or by connecting through a powered USB hub (assuming the hub also has enough power to run the HDD).
It didn't recognize my external 500GB NTFS drive. I have a spare that I can format with FAT32 and will try that just for grins if I get a chance tomorrow. Otherwise, meh.
Update: I tried this with an external USB (self-powered) drive formatted in FAT32 and I got an error message saying "High Powered USB Device Connected: Cannot connect to...."

It works great on the 7.7 so exFAT is supported and even plays HD movies and lets you transfer files to the 7.7 and back.

How did you manage to get the 7.7 to read/write exFAT formatted disk? I can't seem to make it work here. Tried both Asian and European ROMs but in vain. Can anybody else who has a USB connector with an exFAT stick confirm this?

Just wanted to let everyone know that a USB A Male to A Female won't really help much...
For a matter of fact it won't do anything... it's like an elongation cable of 8cm which is crap!!! I guess I wanted to get a Female-Female but came out a bit of a retard...
I wanted to use the 30pin to USB cable, connect it to a Female-Female converter and shove my other USBs on the other end.... wondering if that will work....

exFat doesnt work on micro sd cards in built-in slot so I guess it won't work on any other medium...

Have you actually been able to do that with a powered USB harddrive? I got an error message saying "high powered device" when I plugged one in to the Tab.

I have tried three different external hard drive assemblies ( one desktop, two portable) all with external power applied. One of the portables always triggers the High Power Device shutoff. So I think it depends on the drive box interface electronics.

I got it! I've tested it out and everything seems to be working out. However, I can't seem to get my 128 GB SD to be recognized with the SD Adapter.
It comes up as "SD card blank or unsupported filesystem"
I've formatted the card to NTFS and ext4 to no avail.
Any suggestions?
Edit: I got Fat32 to work with my 128 GB SD card. With the limitation of Fat32, I won't be able to transfer a file larger than 4 GB. Anyone how to get around this issue?

Anyone else having extremely slow transfer speeds?? Im seeing usb 1.0 speeds. I've tried switching cables, ports, everything. Here's a screen cap.
how big was the original file? the nook usb cable is known to be a usb 1.0.cable. I've used a usb 2.0 cable and I have noticed speeds increase. if u are tranferring a file that's 1+ GB then speeds will be more or less the same.

I've tried switching to my cable for my Evo but it didn't make much of a difference. The file is about 200mb, nothing huge... For now I'm ejecting the microsd and using a usb card reader but its pretty irritating.
I uploaded 60 Mb and 70 Mb video files fast, but when tried to transfer lot of pictures with all small size, the transfer almost took hours, so I guess the transfer of a big file will do fine, but for lot of small files, will take longer.
What I haven't tried is thru wifi transfer, will update later.
I find it hard to believe that everyone else has the same transfer speeds. Is it possible that its my nook?

You're not the only one - same goes for me 16GB rooted. I mean slow is putting it nicely. It would top out at 2/3 MB/s and fall way below 700kb - eventually settling in at 40-80kb/s. 5 days to transfer 10GB! Now I don't even bother. Just take the card out and put it in my card reader on the PC and transfer. I couldn't do this while I was on holiday however with a laptop with no SD card slot, so it was extremely frustrating.

Yeah, I bought a usb sdcard reader and use that when I don't have access to my laptop. Or I transfer via wifi with ftp from my home server. It would be nice to find the problem though. Did anyone have this problem pre-rooting their device?

Two different "Nook" cables.
Large file (600MB video)
USB - 4.5 MB/sec
Wifi - 3.75 MB/sec
Small files (1-4MB jpg)
USB - 2.5 MB/sec
Wifi - 1.2 MB/sec
My experience has been that if something else is running on the Nook it can slow everything else down.

Define something else. Usually the only thing I have running in the background is andchat.
not sure if this will make a difference but there is an app on the market.. sd card speed booster (or something.. search it) i changed the value from 128 to 1024.. now getting write speed of ~10Mbps while transferring big files via stock cable..
btw i am on cm7.. and i also use teracopy for windows..

Haha, I only have a class 4 sd card. So that can be some of the issue. I also have started using SwiFTP. I get around 2-3 MB/s transfers with it and I don't have to unplug my nook cable from the wall. So it's a win win sort of thing now.
Same problem. Even if I use the Wifi transfer mode and put data in nook's internal memory or the sd card, the speed never goes beyond 3mbps. :-/
For those that aren't aware, I just wanted to turn you on to Samsung's new Pro series line of cards. These are different than their old Pro line of cards. I bought one of the 64GB cards and it's been fantastic. Only the 64GB model of their new Pro line uses NAND technology. The 16GB and 32GB models in the new Pro series does NOT used NAND technology.

It's much better. Also, I'm assuming you mean transfer files from a PC to your card and vice versa? If so, to further enhance speed, be sure you're using USB 3.0 via a USB 3.0 card reader plugged into your PC's USB 3.0 port. If you don't have a USB 3.0 port on your PC, you'll still get slower USB 2.0 transfer speeds but more stable transfer speeds with this NAND-technology card.

The Tab Pro 10.1.
OK that model doesn’t have USB 3.0 so yes, you'd need to use a USB 3.0 card reader plugged into a USB 3.0 port on your PC.

Oh wow, now that's something I hadn't spotted. Only the 12" Tab Pro has USB 3. That's actually bizarre. But I don't really mind. I don't transfer 60 gigs to my tablet every day...

I think the Note Pro 12.2 has USB 3.0 too. I just didn't have use for the S-pen. Ha!

I've just realised I can't rename files and folders on the card, whether the tablet is connected to the PC or via ES File Explorer. Is this normal or a problem with the card?
Not normal unless the card is locked in read only mode somehow. If you upgraded at some point to Android 4.4+, the software also removed SD card write access and you'll need to install a workaround for it. The way I fixed mine was to install an app from the Play Store called FolderMount [ROOT]. Install, reboot, check if you can rename files, then uninstall. If your device isn't rooted, there are other options. Just Google "android KitKat SD fix".

Oh it's not in read only mode. I can copy files to the card without a problem. I can create new folders too. I just can't rename anything, it's odd. As for the upgrade, the Tab Pro 10.1 came with Android 4.4... And this card has never been in another device.

Okay, just remembered my Android phone (HTC*Desire HD) has a microSD card. So I swapped them. No problems renaming files of the phone with the 64 gig card. Same problem on the tablet with the phone's card, from ES File Explorer I get "task failed". From the PC renaming hangs Windows Explorer. However, from the computer, I can't even browse folders on the card. Double-clicking on any folder causes Windows Explorer to hang.
I swapped the cards back to their proper places. The 64 gig card I can browse no problem from the PC. I can delete files and folders and transfer new ones. I just can't rename anything. It's very odd. But the extra problems with the 8 gig card from the phone make me worry it might be a hardware issue. My tablet isn't rooted or anything. It's only had the official updates.

I use the designed-in SD card reader that is standard with several models of HP Pavilion notebook (the SanDisk microSD card-carrier will also work with the same Pavilion notebook models - the carrier is bundled with Sandisk microSD media typically of 32GTB and larger) I use the same-size microSD cards (SanDisk 32GB) in everything that takes microSD - the two notebooks, my Lenovo tablet, and my newest acquisition - a Samsung Galaxy S7; my GNex does not take microSD cards at all).

No, why would you ask that?
I want a way to read/write microSD cards using the S7 phone. As in, copy files to/from microSD cards. For situations like travel and wanting to upload a file that's on a microSD from a camera, one that may not have a means to connect via USB directly to a device. Seemed like a pretty simple question that wouldn't have anything to do with an "access point".

There is a microSD reader built into the phone - it is all-internal (the nano-SIM carrier is also a microSD carrier; the microSD mounts underneath the nano-SIM). There is an accessory that you can purchase that opens the nano-SIM/microSD carrier - or you can bend a staple to open the drawer.

There is indeed a card reader in the phone. One that will very likely already be occupied by a memory card. One that would be used during the process of transferring media files to/from standalone microSD cards.
That and constant use of the internal microSD slot is probably a bad plan. I'm not thinking they expect it to be used for swapping cards all the time. Seems a lot smarter to use one of the external ones I've already mentioned above. So, yeah, there's that...

That is true of ANY device that takes microSD - it's not a unique dilemma. (In addition to my tablet, S7, and two of my three notebooks - both of which are HP Pavilions.) That has to do with the microSD format itself - it's NOT designed to be a "plug-repeatedly" format - the larger 64GB and above sizes that the S5 and later phones and tablets can swallow only make that more and more obvious. That is why I use the cloud - not microSD - to share common files among my hardware - and with cloud services such as Microsoft OneDrive being both OS-neutral and rather capacious - and especially with devices that don't support microSD at all - such as my GNex - they aren't left out. That is the rather amusing aspect about OneDrive - as long as I have Internet access and a compatible OS (which is every OS except a Linux distribution, a UNIX, or a BSD) I can get to my shared files anywhere - on the planet. (Even on a plane with wi-fi-based Internet access - such as Southwest - and I'm not kidding; I have, in fact, done so.) MicroSD is for files too LARGE for the cloud - or that will stored ONLY on a specific device - that is especially true of the 64GB and larger microSD cards, as they are only compatible with specific devices; while I can use such a microSD with the S7, it's size-incompatible with anything else. Otherwise, I use the cloud - and OneDrive in particular - it's compatible with all my hardware.
Right, so beyond going on about a question I didn't ask, your point?
I've traveled to many places where data services are either unavailable at all, or considerably more expensive than here in the US. That and wanting to avoid lugging along larger format media makes using microSD cards pretty convenient. Having an external microSD (or any other media card format) reader opens up another avenue for managing media.
As for online services, look no further than Photobucket's recent extortion fiasco to understand why depending on such service is not necessarily as glorious as you might expect.
Again, I asked about readers that'd work in the USB socket of the S7. And got a whole lot of entirely unrelated information instead of on-point replies. But after doing a lot of my own research elsewhere, and the purchasing of several bits of hardware, I came back and posted the results. Yet this invites still more unrelated replies. Please folks, I'm sure you think you mean well but a bit more on-topic focus would be greatly appreciated.

A Little Update : Storage could also be exFAT. There is no problem with format unless fat because of lack of maximum file size

Hi. I connected my 2tb NTFS formatted WD My passport drive but the tablet didn't "see" the drive although the drive was spinning. I downloaded MLUSB mounter from the play store and all was good.

Ok giving this a try
Oh hell yeah even I got a 2tb drive and I play HDR movies from it that are like 25 GB each file so... Go for psa rips only 4 movies so far but good.
So see attached.
Unfortunately my usb a to c conveter mivi acts up a lot I guess it's a loose contact bad one, really.
Can't go out and buy another one right now.
So yeah it's an on off thing but I just used the HDD yesterday to watch Baywatch HDR and lemme tell ya wow. I know Samsung's got the pop. But this was just pop pop pop! MX player does play HDR files so.
I don't know what your reason is to use external but it works but a huge battery drain but a 3 hour HDR movie form 100 percent charge and brightness ends up at 23ish after the movie.
I suggest using SD card. Copy to SD card but hard drive will connect
