Any way to install tablet versions of apps? - TouchPad General

Ok so I have CM7.1 Alpha3.5 on the TouchPad. It's decent. However, it's just a blown up phone ROM with some tweaks to make it usable on a screen this large. This means that there's no panes in Gmail or other tablet optimized apps.
Now, I don't mean to diminish the work that has been done to things like the overlay for the buttons - that is really a slick implementation - but is there any way/place to get the tablet optimized versions of apps onto this thing instead of the phone versions of the apps? Or should I just shut up and wait for ICS to come out soon?
EDIT: Sigh. Mod, you can move this to the General section. My bad.

I was thinking of installing this, but if what you say is the case (all the apps will be like they are on the phone) then I guess I will wait til an ICS port comes out. I just REALLY want the Android apps on the Touchpad.

Install it! You have nothing to lose. You can boot into webOS OR CM7 via the startup menu.
Don't let one guy's complaints stop you.

Oh by all means install it. Its crazy fast and in a worst case scenario you lay an easier foundation for installing ICS when it is available. You don't have to use Android - this will get you dual booting.

If your talking about google music or netflix tablet versions, if you edit the device id to something like GT-i900 it will load up tablet versions.
At least this has been my experience...

Hmmmm... Can I do this on the device itself or adb to it or what?

Build.prop using a text editor of some kind will do the trick

In my situation, I've had the exact opposite occur: too many apps have told me to purchase the tablet version of their apps, such as SwiftKey for one. Netflix comes up as the tablet version, and i dunno about Gmail, but it doesn't bother me none if it's the phone view, it still works fine.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using xda premium

Really? I edited my building prop to the Galaxy 7 wifi only since it has same resolution as Touchpad using and is wifi, only. All my apps look gorgeous. Typing on SwiftKey Tablet right now. GT-P1010 Samsung, i used root explorer to and just edit the build prop right on your Touchpad. I think es file will work too

Yeah I understand that - but I'm asking if there's a way to install the honeycomb/tablet versions. It sounds like, from everybody else, that we can with a simple edit of the build.prop file.
I will give it a shot later! Thanx everybody!

Well if anyone knows how to get the Plume Tablet version to run with a build.prop setting that would be great.

Fyi there is a huge difference between "tablet version(hc)" and " tablet optimized " tablet optimized works on larger screen gb units( like our tp)
tablet version is intended for honeycomb devices with the appropriate framework and can only be loaded on honeycomb os.
The reason why ppl are needing to edit the build.prop is for the app/market to recognize our device as a compatible device/hardware on a "tablet optimized " app.
No matter what u do a "tablet version" application will not work on a "phone version " os.
If it were that easy to install a hc application, the current fragmentation would not exist within androids, and ics would not be that important coming out.
Just a food for thought rant since I'm seeing so many God damn threads about this matter lol..
Thanks for listening

Honeycomb source was never released so we are stuck with a phone optimized version of Android until we can get an CM9/ICS ROM. There are new APIs etc in Honeycomb that won't allow those apps to run in Gingerbread even if you somehow force installed them. You can find some apps that will display a tablet UI. Here is a few of ones I use that run a tablet UI:
Netflix (really nice tablet UI update that is working great)
OfficeSuite Pro 5
Maxthon Browser for 10" Tablet
Firefox (tablet UI can be enabled in about:config)
What I look for is apps that have tablet screenshots or have been updated for ICS yet the same version also runs on GB.

so once we have an ics port we will have something that functions just like honeycomb does on the current tablets?

For those who want a swype style keyboard, try TouchPal keyboard tablet edition. I may install it in update.

There is a video somewhere in the forums. There are two lines you need to edit. I know what to enter, but can't remember the exact name of the lines that are changed.
Here is a link to the video: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1381728
GT-I9100 and Samsung are the edits. It still won't let you download too many tablet apps as this is a phone port, but it still rocks.

Actually the Honeycomb source was released, it's included with the ICS source.
http://groups.google.com/group/android-building/msg/c0e01b4619a1455a?pli=1
This release includes the full history of the Android source code
tree, which naturally includes all the source code for the Honeycomb
releases. However, since Honeycomb was a little incomplete, we want
everyone to focus on Ice Cream Sandwich.

More importantly, the HC releases are not tagged, so it is all random guessing as to which ones correspond to the HC builds..

[Q] Porting handwriting recognition from Lenovo Tablet to the Flyer?

Hi,
The Lenovo Android Tablet is released. It comes with the same n-trig digitizer technology as in the Flyer. It has apps with handwriting recognition such as VisionObjects Notes and maybe DocsToGo ( 5'30": http://androidcommunity.com/lenovo-thinkpad-tablet-hands-on-video-20110719/ ) which are quite handy.
It would be wonderful if our community can extract and port those apps to the Flyer (through ROM or apk). I am not in IT so I hope that the work can be done by someone here.
Cheers.
(I don't know whether the Development Forum is a correct one to post things like this. Mod please move the thread to other forums if necessary.)

Edit: I just took the notesmobile_len-oem.apk and notesmobile_len-data-de_DE.apk(for german language) from the dumb.
They installed fine on my GB 2.3.3 Flyer but once I'm starting the app it ays that this version of notes mobile is not compatible with my device.
Could someone simply check if it works on a HC flyer?
Edit2: Just removed the device check... However - it still crashes right after start - anyone who wants to try my version without device check? Maybe it is running on honeycomb.
cool software.hope can get it soon
I hope someone will do it, it seems great.
Well - like I said:
I can share the notesmobile apk to anyone who is running honeycomb on the flyer.
I eventually also removed the device check.
But since I haven't moved to honeycomb yet - I can't try. :-/

Please, do it! A lot of people have already moved to HC
Try the following:
1. Install Notesmobile_len_oem.apk
2. Install the language pack (eg notesmobile_len-data-en_GB.apk)
3. Put the two lib files in your "system/lib" folder if possible
4. Run the notesmobile application for the first time. --> If you get a "device not supported error" continue with 5.
5. Uninstall notesmobile (keep the language pack and lib files in place)
6. Install notesmobile_len-oem-signed.apk
7. Run the notesmobile app (this version should ignore the device check)
@Himmig, got FC on process com.visionobjects.notesmobile_len
I also got the same force close.
I wanna know can man use it on GB?

Anybody tried WritePad, and another one is PenReader? It seems to be a pretty decent handwriting recognition app. It works like a keyboard, so can be used in any app. I hope it will be even much better on the Flyer with Honeycomb.
Anybody using Flyhigh ROM has been succesful to run this application?
well the problem is the following;
1. The flyer has 2 x touch film layers which work on different voltage readings. However the main touchscreen has the ability to detect both voltges, and hence why it can trigger into notepad mode when the pen nibbles touches the screen.
2. The the application itself is designed to work on a different android framework... This would need to be modified to sense.framework as otherwise they just won't compile well together. You also have to modify the application source code to accept the pen voltages instead of fingers...
Unless you want to use fingers too? If so that is another bastard in itself to set up with the pencils interface.
I've tried with SBM to see if the pen could be modified to write with it etc, and but failed, and hence I believe we need afew development to work on this.
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using xda premium
update your flyer to HC and buy writepad : you won't need to port this app anymore
Are people trying to get Notes Mobile to work or the handwriting recognition text input to work? Or both?
For those still getting force closes on Notes Mobile, I monitored logcat and found that you need to push the following into /system/lib/:
libMyScriptEngine.so, libMyScriptHWR.so, and libStylusCore.so
If you're running Himmig's modified apk, then it should be fine. If you're just using the apk straight from the system dump, then build.prop needs to spoof the Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet.
I've been playing with Notes Mobile on my Flyer for a couple of days, and handwriting recognition is quite spiffy. As a note-taking app, I still like HTC Notes better since it syncs with Evernote and it's just integrated better. You could export to HTC Notes from Notes Mobile though.
I actually don't know if the handwriting IME is part of the system dump. Is it there?
Thanks for the input mate... I should have looked at logcat :-/
I'll try if it works and see if the modified apk is able to surpass the device check... however - could you post your build prop modifications?

Google Chrome to be the default browser for Android in Ice Cream Sandwich?

Hey every one I read a article this morning that was on the app Appy Geek but was originally posted on Tech Radar. But the article says.
A snippit of code posted on Google's Chromium Code website reveals Google's Chrome web browser is to be ported to it's Android smartphone operating system.

Here is a link to the article, Chrome finally coming to Android?
Now I think this might just make a pretty significant change to Android and the user experience with Android. I also think it is about time Google made Chrome part of Android, that is if this turns out to be true with the release of Ice Cream Sandwich.
What is your opinion about this? And any links to other articles about this would be awsome.
Edit: I decided to do some more investigation on this subject. Below are some more articles that discuss this topic. From what I have found so far we will know for sure about this and if it will just be a app or the new default browser.

It's definitely a possibility, the Logitech Revue already uses Chrome.........I'm using it right now!
I have no real issues with the stock browser apart from its inability to download all files out the box.
Would be cool to see what They come up with tho, the firefox android version was pretty pants imho
I like the default Android browser, heck I have never even tried another internet browse for Android cause it is a very functional browser to me. Now when I was using Windows Mobile on my HD2 I tried several different browsers on it cause Internet Explorer just was notfor me.
Now having said that I do have two things I do not like about thedefault browser. One is the URL address box does not stay at the top of the browser pagewhen you scroll down. And the little icons you use to highlight text to copy and past or whatever you want to do with it does not really work that great. Even on my Acer Iconia A500 tablet, which I am using right now.
Shamless LOL
I added some more links on this topic to post #1, and this is a shamless BUMP!
I use Chrome everywhere now, except my phone, but I did think that the stock Android browser was based on Chrome. Am I mistaken in that assumption?
As for a fully fledged, actually called "Chrome", browser on Android, that just smacks of win!!! Especially if you can sync with the desktop version
Edit: Incidentally, I used to think the stock Android browser was the best available, after trying all the Market available browsers, but now I'm on MIUI and the browser is just amazing! (I do still want Chrome though )

If Chrome comes to Android, there will likely be minimal change compared to the current browser. They're both based on WebKit, so the backends are identical. The only possible change I could see is to the UI, which is minimal on the phone side. Maybe we'll see proper tabbed browsing, like what's in Honeycomb.

Yeah that is like one of the main reasons I personally would like to see Chrome on Android. I have a Acer Iconia A500 and I love the tabs on it. They make using the browser so much smoother and user friendly to me.
One of the articles I read today was talking about just this point. I can not remember if I posted a link to it or not in post #1. But remember the browser in Honeycomb is themed to look more like Google Chrome bit it is still basically the same browser as the phone OS under it all. Point being this ICS is suppose to combine Gingerbread and Honeycomb into one OS. Also if Chrome or even a Chrome themed. Browser is intergrated into the Android OS it will be a pretty big change as the better internet browsing experience will help make Android more appealing to users.
I think this is a great idea, ICS with chrome. I just hope it will be fast!
wah nice if chrome is the default browser in ICS
The android stock browser is not bad, but it's only not bad,no more.
And It's not based on chroome, but it has webkit like chrome

[Q] Apps not working with Honeycomb:(

I guess I should have read app's information before purchasing tab 10.1 Its a great tab, but an app that works with gingerbread on my galaxy s 2 will not work with Honeycomb. Anyone know why and if I should just wait for ice cream sandwich or just sell this tab and buy the other tab from the fruit manufacturer?
I wouldn't mind if the app just ran on a smaller scale (its for surveillance video) like an app does on the ipad when the app is not optimized for ipad.
thanks for your advice.
normally apps work fine for me if theyr ment for phone they are just small
try either updating to 3.2 or trying tasks galaxytask rom wich is 3.2
if you mean that you cannot download it from the market look around for it a bit and try and download it off a different app store on the web
thanks. I tried to look on the market from the tab and it doesn't even show up.
I then tried to download it from Dolphin Browser and it says it downloaded and installed but cannot see it in the "apps". I'm a newb to the 10.1 so I am not sure how to add galaxy task you speak of

If it works on your Galaxy S2 but not on your Tablet, I can guarantee that app won't work on an iPad. iPad's won't run any Android apps.
Sarcasm aside, it's not the tablets fault it can't run that app, the developer of whatever app hasn't done whatever needs to be done to it to get it to work.
I suppose you could buy an iPad, or you could email the app developer, or even find another app that does what you want. Since you didn't specify what app you're talking about we probably can't offer any suggestions.
Galaxy task is a custom ROM. Go to the android dev subforum for that.
There's several surveillance video apps that work great on the GT10. Do you need a specific one? If not, search the market and try another one....
What app are you actually talking about? Even if it won't work on tablet it would show up after install. Are you sure it didn't say application not installed? As it still shows a green tick as if it did which is a bit strange I think. If that was the case it probably isn't signed and needs pushing to system. I have not found any app that doesn't work on the tab, just shows up small like the above guy said.
thanks guys. i guess there arent enough honeycomb tabs to justify creating an app that supports the app i want to run (revo remote) at this time.

what do you say?
compared to the browser....you'd have to argue the need for this, it was designed for the phone (GS3) and all that's been done is ported from there. If they developer made a bespoke tablet version then it'd be nice. but hey, thats my beef with ICS at the moment, many apps are stretched and look wrong

I was working on it.... Never got it right, as it appears I was only able to change the UI fonts. The article fonts themselves appear to be set remotely and just displayed locally. So it didn't even fix the biggest issue with the fonts which is in the articles themselves. It only fixed the UI and header fonts. I was going to post the APK anyway, but I found a force close error when trying to add new feeds, so that made things not so nice. Add to that the fact that for some reason, the APK wasn't installable unless I re-signed it, that makes it difficult to switch between versions without uninstalling/reinstalling, I decided not to post the modified APK.
If a developer type wants, I can send the modified APK directly. I'm not going to post it here because it's A) not stable and B) didn't achieve the intended purpose anyway, and C) I don't want to have to support something that's broken/unfinished.
Anyone that knows how to decompile/recompile an APK can do the same thing I did. All I did was reduce the font sizes in the XML layout and values files. As I said though, that didn't have any effect on the actual article content, which appeared to be defined remotely.

What is really needed is better multitasking, especially as the number of tablets running Android grows. I mean have it so that apps can run on a portion of the screen at half third or quarter size, so they can be used simultaneously. Maybe it needs to be more like an extension of the widget functionality, where each widget is basically a full app running. So you could have a word processor, pdf reader, and browser window open at once. Or phone and sms, or youtube and file explorer, music and a simple game. I think Windows Mobile can do this in some limited way.
It feels like people obsess over minor changes to the appearance of the OS or arrangement of a particular app, and forget that you need to rethink some of the most basic aspects of the UI from time to time to stay competitive as an OS.
