Looking for a good resource to teach me how to theme apps - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm looking to custom build my own app themes - where can I learn how to do this?
For example, I'd like to make the Google music app more sAMOLED friendly (more blacks, less blue).
Any ideas on how I could get started to learn this? Eventually I'm going to want to expand and build my own CM9 theme. Thanks

[Q] Regarding android 3.0 "honeycomb"

Alright I realize that 3.0 is made for tablets so I am not asking for a port or anything, but I was wondering if anyone has made a theme resembling it or if there is a rom that looks like it? I was checking out some videos of honeycomb and it looks really cool. And before posting this I did use the search feature and I didnt find anything..and I was a little confused by some thread titles lol
If you are running CyanogenMod Rom then you can use the honeycomb theme.
Well thres also simply galaxy 3.0 which is gingerbread witg a honeycomb thene... its a bit unstable but utherwise its pretty damn amazing

Yup, there sure is. You have to piece it together from multiple things (themes, icons, etc.) to get it the way you want, but it's all out there, lol!

No prob. Just go to the market and search for the FREE "Honeycomb ADW Theme" by GFX Android. Out of all the themes that cost money, this one is ABSOLUTELY FREE and definitely the best. Wait till you see the mother load of icons it comes with along with the search bar you are asking for. And, you can always get as creative as you want with a little patience and Root Explorer, lol!

Preview of Orange theme... opinions welcome! ok actually they are wanted.

4 screenshots. All I am missing it the battery icons and a few random images here and there on the menus.
Looking for opinions or suggestions now that you can clearly see the color scheme and what the system text will look like.

I wasn't sure how an orange theme would look, not a huge orange fan, but you definitely make it work. Looks good.

Orange is looking good
Definitely going to use this! How long does it normally take to build a theme? In the terms of hours.
It really depends on how much stuff you theme and how complicated you get with your image editing. If you go right at it and do nothing else you might get it done in one day. Probably not though.

I am trying to wrap this up but.. I just keep adding to it. I am going to be including a lot more apps than I ever have. Think I am going to try my hand at making a Go Launcher theme too. If not, I'll just add a bunch of themed icons into the correct folder so you can change them easily.
Yeah probably the latter, it takes less time..lol

[Mod] [Updated 12.7.2011] Rosie done up with some color...

Rosie with a splash of color
Update... Updated...
5x5 drawer with custom backgrounds now posted....
So here is the deal... Since myself and killathenoob are finding it hard to find the time to really give everyone a full on theme (And i will be taking a break to mess with my new GS2)... I thought it might be fun to give everyone a little something to play with...
I have modified Rosie with some nice application drawer backgrounds... These will work in ANY Sense 3.0 Rom...
On another note... IF you have a custom image you would like done special for you, just let me know... Its not a massive deal at all for me to do... So dont be shy.... I will mostly work on requests during the day... So evening requests will need to understand i wont touch them till the next morning...
I went with the colors most seem to like... Green, Blue and Red... And semi-transparent...
How to:
- Download to your PC
- Move to your storage (Recovery specific)
- Nandroid
- Flash
- Reboot
Things to note:
- Stock Rosie base
- Lots of xml edits to add in transparent and image backgrounds, along with 5x5 drawer...
- No, this will not flash the surrounding theme shown in the screen shots... (Most of it is just a skin, and not mine)
Reserved for me and future additions...
Looks great!
Thanks much....

What happened to the themes for TW projects? You had some DOPE-ASS custom icon/status bar shapes that really pushed the .png options out there.
TW lost its main developer for the last 6 months while he took care of real life... Now that he is back, I will be back with the team... I have amaze obviously and a GS2 on order... So my more cutting edge themes should start back up... Just need to manage my theme work with my real life... Been focusing on work, my painting (water color) and a lot of charity work...

Very nice. I miss SomB. You really pushed shape options on the Vibe. Once I ditch the macbook, I'd love to collaborate (I do more than UOT FWIW).

TouchWiz Port(kinda)

Hello all! I am currently running CMX with a TouchWiz 5 theme. I installed the TouchWiz Launcher port along with a few different zips I have found across xda. My phone has most TW widgets, sounds and stock apps. I feel a lot of people would love to run this ROM. I have no idea how but is there a way for me to generate a zip of my setup so that others could enjoy it?
What do you guys think?

i like!!!! i would rock it all day!! :good:
Anyone that is interested or knows how to get the ball rolling please point me in the right direction. I am extremely happy with this set-up. Forgot to mention it even is running the SGS3 Camera Port as well. It's heavily themed.
please
I would love to contribute to the community. Just need to be pointed in the right direction. Similar to SVN?
The one thing I'd love to have on my ROM is the TouchWiz lock screen. My sisters both have SGII's and I love how you can flick away the lock screen

You can use this to make an update zip. Just put the apks in their respective places. The theme would probably be in data and the launcher in system.
The only issue I see is if this is the TouchWiz 5 theme you speak of it can't be included because it's a paid app.
Like the setup, i have been looking for something like this a little while.
Can you post how you did it in the meantime

I found another update zip creator that is more generic and less device specific than D4.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1248486
Here's a guide that explains an easier way to mount system and data by using busybox instead of finding the mount points.

Edit: This thread will help you find mount points if you need too..

Edit2: ^^ I agree. Can you post what you used for everything? Where did you get the launcher, the widgets, the sounds, the stock apps, the theme, and maybe the wallpaper/s?
Anything new on this?

I wrote a couple of devs seeking help. I am a full time student and I work full time as well. I thought about releasing a HOW to guide. I have not given up.
Pimp my ROM seems to have the full tw launcher and some widgets. Cannot confirm if all are there. You can then get a tw theme from market and you should be set. I am on decks 10-10 build (4.1.2) and the theme is not working but launcher is

Difference between Themer and Buzz laucher?

I have been running Buzz laucher for some time now and just recently got a beta code to use Themer. My question would be what are the differences? So far I feel they are quite similar with the exception of Buzz having more features because it has been around longer.
Thoughts?
I dunno but if you wanna give up that code, let me know! I'll take it!

One major difference that I found out was that Buzz launcher consumes over 100MB Memory(without any widget) and Themer takes about 40-50MB even on high end theme ...
Also even in Beta stage Themer is much smoother than Buzz (transition animations).
So I guess Themer has better memory management .
Also Themer will have more Quality and Detailed Theme Gallery than Buzz (Because there are many Themers who have their themes on MyColorScreen also unlike Buzz the Theme is validated before it gets published in the Themer themes Browser)...
u dont need to download any external app like UCCW/zooper etc etc
At a first glance, I asked myself the same question... they are very similar in form and function... But I was looking for the 'widget everything' option and looks promising.
I have a question. I've modified a theme I'm using now, if I switch to another theme then go back will the original theme I modified will it be the way I left it?

Export your current theme before changing to other theme. You can get it back at Themer > My Themes > Exported.
Differences are:
1) Our themes are 100% curated. Only the best get in.
2) Themer is true one-click. User doesn't have to do anything to make the theme look just the way the designer intended.

^^ This - 1 click is literally all it takes. No further setting up of widgets is required, unless of course you want to edit the theme.
Also, with the simplicity of themer, I strongly believe that it will gain a massive community behind it once it's generally released. Plus, there's a dedicated forum on our favourite mobile development site too
What's not to like!

I see the benefits. I guess there are a few features I miss over buzz that I would like to see added.
1) Infinite scrolling of both home screens and app drawer
2) scroll transitions (more fun than fictional)
3) a less intrusive menu button capture
I also think it would be great to have an option to retain the AOSP like play store icon in the top corner of the app drawer.
Edit: One more thing I would like to see is the ability to use the theme based icons as folders or standalone app icons via the long press>edit option
Until Themer can handle my Nexus 4 in full screen mode I will be using Buzz for my themes (although I recognize that Themer has better themes etc etc).
