[How-to] Quick Access to Nook Tablet's FACTORY RESET Screen [w/o "8 Failed Reboots"] - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

[How-to] Quick Access to Nook Tablet's FACTORY RESET Screen [w/o "8 Failed Reboots"]
This is an alternate method for accessing the Nook Tablet's Factory Reset screen. This may be used to access this area instead of using the "8 Failed Reboots" method.
I can confirm that this does work and I have tested it several times to verify that it would work every time. I take no credit for figuring out this factory reset method as it was dcnarad that seems to have stumbled upon it. I do take credit for figuring out exactly how it is to be performed and have reposted it below correctly. dcnarad's post here is a bit haphazard and it slightly missed the mark as to how this actually needs to be performed so as to get to the factory reset screen properly.
Perform Factory Reset of the Nook Tablet:
PWR off the Nook Tablet.
Hold "PWR" & "∩" & "VOL+" & "VOL-" buttons simultaneously to reboot.
After reboot, release only the "PWR" & "∩" buttons after 2-3 seconds upon receiving the "∩ - Contains Reader® Mobile technology by Adobe Systems Incorporated." screen while still maintaining to hold the "VOL+" & "VOL-" buttons.
The screen may blink a couple seconds later and then you will be presented with the Factory Reset screen with the following options:
Do you want to reset your device to the factory default?
Press POWER key to exit
Press HOME key to continue
Are you sure?
This will delete all your content and restore the device to the factory default settings.
Press POWER key to exit
Press HOME key to continue
I even accidentally let go of the "VOL+" & "VOL-" buttons once while testing this a few times but quickly pushed them back down again and was still given the factory reset screen so this method works even with a little goof like that. This worked since holding down the "VOL+" & "VOL-" buttons was found to be unnecessary.
ENJOY!
NOTE: "HOME key" = ∩ button
NOTE 2: After some discussion with others, I decided to "take one for the team" and experiment with software version 1.4.1 update. I manually updated my Nook Tablet to software version 1.4.1 via the software download from BN.com. I applied the update, booted up software version 1.4.1 and then did a factory reset of the device afterwards. I have confirmed that once your NT has been updated to software version 1.4.1 then a factory reset afterwards will reset your NT to the new factory default settings of software version 1.4.1 and your NT will not revert to software version 1.4.0. It seems that B&N has pulled another fast one by over-writing the device's original factory software with this update. I was able to revert my NT to software version 1.4.0 via AdamOutler's Restore Barnes & Noble Nook 1.4.0 from SDCard afterwards with only a single issue. The ∩ button was not working after the device initially booted up into software version 1.4.0 [not uncommon] but after applying a second factory reset to my device, this issue was resolved.

I apologize if this is a dumb question, but does this undo root?

This will reset the NT to the Factory Default that it was shipped with [currently B&N Software version 1.4.0] and root will no longer be available until you root the NT again.

Thank you very much. This will be handy if I ever need to unroot.

This seems unclear. Is this the same as a recovery, and thus if you were patched to 1.4.1, you will reset to 1.4.1 with this method, or will this undo a 1.4.1 patch?

I tried this method with cfoesch system on my nook and after the wipe the modified bootanimation i still there.

This thread is incorrect. You only need to hold power button and home button for factory reset. Factory reset does not wipe root. Anyone expecting to reroot will have problem.

I explain this what the start post is: an alternative easier way of make a hard reset AKA "8 failed reboot reset" which will reset the /system to factory NOT /data, for wipe data AKA erase/de-register for the nook AKA factory reset for most android devices you have to go to settings> device info > erase and de-register device.
* Hard reset - reset the /system folder to factory (removing gApps, restoring bloatware, removing root, etc)
* Factory reset - will wipe /data (All your installed apps will be gone)

This is confirmed and OP has been updated, thanks.
This method does wipe Indirect's current root method as per the OP. You'll need to justify your statement since it doesn't explain anything at all as to what you're referencing.

V, this does indeed reset the /data... upon rebooting after this reset, the device must process registration once again, just as it did when it was pulled out of the box after purchase. I have reset my own device several times and every time I rebooted, it begins the registration process all over again, every time.

So this reset /system and /data at the same time? sure? so far both have not been mixed in Android world as far as i know , if this is the case which is weird then is super cool to have it and very helpful when you want to return back your NOOK

I think its more a testimony to folks coming into this with little or no understanding of Android and all the "buzz words" that go with rooting, etc. There's a learning curve there where people will see an answer, not understand it, fiddle fart around with the process for a bit and pick up a little experience, then have that AH HAH moment when they finally get what was being said. Problem is, it takes screwing something up twice or three times before they have that common frame of reference.
At least, that's how it was for me. It's getting easiER to find answers the longer that I'm here, but I can't say it's "easy" yet.

Hi.
Just to post my experience.
I had a NT with 1.4.1 software version. I put the 1.4.0 back with AdamOutler method. Then I performed this method to Factory reset, I have gone through the registration. New NT. BUT when I go to check the version it says 1.4.0, which invalidates your NOTE 2, I believe.
Hope this helps, in some way

It invalidates nothing. By your own admission, you reverted your NT to v1.4.0; hence, your factory reset will be v1.4.0. Read everything before making assumptions.

Thanks, this actually helped me. As I am absolutely new to the NT.
I tried to follow the new method for booting from the microSD card, but I could not complete the sequence because I was resetting it all the time.

[RECOVERY][ZIP] Nook Color Restore to stock

FLASHABLE ZIP, (1)RESTORING NC TO STOCK/FACTORY OR (2)CWR REMOVAL ONLY
What you will find here: files to restore to stock (v. 1.0.0 or 1.0.1) and files to remove CWR and thus restore stock recovery (8 failed boots and factory reset [power+n]).
______________CAVEAT________________
Keep in mind that the Nook is really hard to brick. By that, I mean almost impossible. The reason is simple: it has a boot priority on uSD, which means you can always boot your NC from the uSD with, for example, Nookie Froyo (see thread in Dev section). From there you can install Clockwork recovery and other applications (ibid) and repair almost anything. So please, don't panic.
If you ask for help, explain yourself exhaustively on what you have done to require attention. Thank you.
All the usual warnings apply. I cannot guarantee that the following won't have side effects, although I'm pretty sure it won't. Please read complete thread before attempting anything.
Do not attempt flashing files unless you really need to or absolutely know what you are doing.
____________________________
______________UPDATE-01/23/2011_______________
There is another method to restore to stock. If you know your way around ADB, please read this thread: click here, as it will guarantee a clean restoring of your partition. The below files only copy files, but cannot "recreate" your partitions. Both methods can work, but the one linked above (shad0wf0x's thread) will work without exception. Only requirement is that you can use ADB. Thank you.
_______________________________________________
I know a few people out there are struggling after having messed up their Nook's partitions (boot, system, etc.). Hope this will help.
Requirements:
- Rom manager / Clockwork Recovery. This can be easily installed through Nookie Froyo booted from uSD, or through rooted NC. See Clockwork Recovery thread for more information.- A uSD with enough free space (at least 175 MB). Make sure uSD is mounted (see mounts option in Clockwork Recovery). If it doesn't read your uSD, format from an Android device (Memory settings, unmount-> format).
Files to restore NC to stock (1):
If AND ONLY if you choose to restore completely your NC, /data and /system partitions must be formatted before flashing. See mounts and storage option in CWR.
LINKS ARE DOWN: please refer to the following post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22809801&postcount=148
BEWARE: These files will reset you Nook Color to stock and remove Clockwork Recovery, by replacing /boot, /system, and /media with stock
If you choose to flash one of the two files above, formating /data and /system is required BEFORE flashing the file (see mounts and storage in CWR) ! After flashing, resets (8 failed and power+n) shouldn't be necessary, everything should work straight "out of the box" after flashing the file.
Or,
File to remove CWR and restore stock recovery (2):
If you simply wish to remove CW Recovery, use this file, which restores /boot only:
EDIT: files are not available anymore. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Size: 6.1MB, md5sum: 6d00a461a221e69195440355f6706104
Note that this last file will affect your rooting of the NC.
If you should choose to keep your NC rooted, try this:
EDIT: files are not available anymore. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Keep in mind this last file has not been tested on my NC. It's necessarily less dangerous than the other files (which already aren't very dangerous). But still, please give me some feedback on whether it works or not. Cheers.
5. As a last attempt to fixing your NC, if your nook never gets passed the "Touch the future screen" or simply doesn't boot, try this file:
EDIT: files are not available anymore. Sorry for the inconvenience.

quick question, if we removed cwrecovery then will the 8 boot reset work again?
Yes, it will. That's the point.
beautiful! Thats just what i wanted, thanks alot man
Thank you. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to check out the B & N 2.2 update coming out soon. It worked great. After flashing I had to factory reset the data (three finger salute) and everything worked out great. Now I'm in the process of installing the 1.0.1 update and then will probably go back to where I was before (autonooter with clockwork recovery). I have a nandroid backup and titanium backup of everything so won't take long. Thanks again. Great job!
Tried out method 2. Looks like i have a corrupted recovery now It wont go past the "Touch the future of reading" and when i do the 2 button salute it brings me to a screen that says the install failed
EDIT: Nvm. just magically worked again.
Edit 2: I used the 2nd method and it wasn't smooth sailing. I'm gonna relate what happened and what I did so that samuelhaff can help others if they have the same problem:
I originally auto-nookered the device and then installed CWR. I foolishly tried to do the 8 hard resets and was met with the recovery screen. I also foolishly wiped the data and cache hoping that would do the trick and alas it just left me with a "touch the android" homescreen that didn't work.
At this point I used the second method after I tried froyo and when I reset the nook the nook it would get stuck at the the "Touch the future of reading." So to fix it i tried to get into recovery by holding the N button and the power button and it showed me a screen that said the install failed and then the nook started booting normally again. Not smooth sailing but it worked so thanks a lot!

Thank you for your contribution.
I don't understand why your NC wouldn't boot pass the splash. Will have to see if that happens again.
But on the other hand, I have noticed that the first boot after restoring may show up an "install failed" notice. Which, again I don't understand just yet. But everything should work if you boot a second time.
Anyway, I'll look into it. In the mean time, both files should help quite a few hot-headed nookers, like myself.
If I new you better, I would fall in love with you. Maybe we should take this slowly.

Ok. Which method did you use? (1) or (2)? Before flashing, were you using v. 1.0.0 ou 1.0.1? Try updating to 1.0.1. See if Wifi is working. If not, try method (1) (again?). Do both resets (8 failed and power+n).

Wiping Phone Question

I'm selling my Droid Eris and want to wipe it so no personal information is stored on it. I'd also like to keep root and the Gingerbread ROM on it because the buyer would like 2.3. Is this possible? I'd like the phone to be so that when you turn it on, it brings you through the steps to activate your phone.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks
On a side note, thank you to everyone in this forum for all the help you've provided over the year. I truly appreciate it. I've upgraded to a Droid Incredible and I'm glad to still be a part of the Android family
Performing a "wipe data/factory reset", followed by a format of the SD card should destroy all "personal" information.
Of course, that deletes all the market apps as well - not sure if that is what you had in mind. But the baseline (system) stuff is still on the phone in /system after that wipe, and the new owner can just boot into the rooted ROM you installed and configure it the way they want. (Or you could help them).
I am 99.999% certain that the "/data" partition is completely empty when you wipe it - there is not even any "leftover" data that a forensics expert could get at, without using CIA/NSA-level techniques (extremely expensive). This is an artifact of the way that a "yaffs2" filesystem works when it is erased (and also because eraseblocks in our Nand are 128K in size).
If the formatting performed on the SD card is of a "quick/lazy" variety, there still may be information on the SD card that a forensics expert could recover, but certainly not by anyone that was a casual user. If that concerns you, you can mount the SD card on the PC and use a wiping program such as "sdelete" (Microsoft Windows Sysinternals utilities) to perform a security wipe of it.
The only thing that won't be affected by these procedures is the phone's activation status, you can only clear that if you have a stock recovery and stock ROM on the phone. Strictly speaking though, if you take the phone in to Verizon, (or maybe even call them) and have them dis-associate the phone's ESN/MEID from your plan, the activation status that is recorded on the phone will be useless.
HTH
bftb0
PS - Just read your post more carefully (about the activation part). You will need to completely unroot the phone (including having a stock recovery), and perform a factory reset to clear the activation status. Once you've done this, you will need to re-root your phone after bypassing the activation screen. This means might want to prepare ahead of time with everything you need on your SD card, unless you can get what you want via WiFi.
It's a fair bit of work to do all that. It might be easier to just leave the phone activated, and have Verizon disassociate it from their end of things - the buyer should be able to activate it after he/she has had the phone added to their account with their carrier, and then make a *228 call. (That's all the activation screen is anyway).
TL;DR if your phone is unlocked (not restricted by network) just delete what's mentioned above and flash a gingerbread ROM with root.
When you boot the phone to make sure it's working, don't go through the activation process at all. Just turn it off.
Sorted.

There is another way to do this which is less complicated than unrooting and re-rooting if you really insist - but it only works if you have the S-OFF bootloader (v 1.49.2000) on your phone, and have gotten fastboot to work (USB drivers installed) on your PC.
Basically, it boils down to using fastboot to direct-boot a stock recovery to your phone, and then using the "factory reset" menu from within the stock recovery. Doing things this way allows the existing (custom) recovery to stay put (untouched) in flash memory, and the stock recovery will do BOTH the data wipe and the NVRAM reset that clears the phone's activation.
Prerequisites: 1.49.2000 S-OFF bootloader; fastboot program; USB Drivers installed on your PC
(1) Download the Leak-V3 PB00IMG.ZIP from this XDA post
(2) Unpack that zip file; you are interested in the "recovery.img" file.
(3) Charge your phone completely (100%), turn it off, and then re-start it in Fastboot mode (Send+End)
(4)
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
You will see an image with a black background, a phone, and a red triangle with an exclamation point in it. That's the splash screen of the stock recovery. To see the menu, press Vol-Up+End together. When the menu appears, the text will be in a blue/magenta color.
(5) Select the "Factory Reset / Wipe data" menu entry.
Note that when it runs, the first thing that it mentions is "Restore factory NV setting..." - that's the bit where the activation is being cleared. After that, it will do all the wipes you are familiar with in Amon_RA (or Clockworkmod). (Be patient, there is a small delay).
That's it - other than cleaning up your SD card.
Be aware that some Froyo/GB ROMs are going to be a little flaky about handling the activation - the whole business of needing to press the Menu key to get a keyboard to show up and then toggling to numeric layout to be able to generate a DTMF tone ("press 1 to activate") - are not going to be obvious to someone that is new to the phone. Unless you are planning on assisting the buyer after the sale, it's probably easier to just sell them a returned-to-stock phone.
cheers

Hmmm okay thank you so much for the detailed responses. I really appreciate it. It seems like it's more complicating than I thought.
If I just wanted to return the phone to stock 2.1 unrooted (and avoid having to unroot, and re-root the phone, and reinstall a ROM) how would I do that?
Just get it to like brand new with steps to activate your phone on boot.
Thanks!

Install the "FlashBack21" ROM (find it here on XDA in the dev forum). Charge your phone to 100% and use the ROM with the radio to return the phone to the July OTA stock condition.
When that completes, boot it up and then skip account setup (and any other setups) and do a
Menu -> Settings -> Privacy -> Factory data reset
When the phone boots next, you will see that it is asking for activation; power the phone off.
Note that you need to tell Verizon to disassociate the phone from your account prior to handing it over to the buyer; otherwise if they run the activation, the phone will just re-activate to your account.

What's the best way to format my SD Card?
And since I already activated a Droid Incredible, doesn't that automatically disassociate the Eris from my account? You can't have 2 active phones right?

Sure. Or format it first (after backing it up to your PC); you can use the Amon_RA menu to format the SD card if you don't have a media slot or card reader on your PC. Won't really matter if there's one ROM file on the SD card.
The most secure way to do things is what I already discussed - format it any way you please, and then mount it to the PC and use that "sdelete" utility from Microsoft. (read the docs on how to wipe an "empty" drive). The most convenient, and probably least secure way to format it is using the phone menus - either the OS menu, or the Amon_RA format menu.

Quick Access to Nook Tablet FACTORY RESET

Wait 2-3 seconds after reboot, release only the "PWR" & "∩" buttons upon receiving the "∩ - Contains Reader® Mobile technology by Adobe Systems Incorporated." screen while still maintaining to hold the "VOL+" & "VOL-" buttons.
The screen will blink a couple seconds later and then you will be presented with the Factory Reset screen with the following options:
Do you want to reset your device to the factory default?
Press POWER key to exit
Press HOME key to continue
Are you sure?
This will delete all your content and restore the device to the factory default settings.
Press POWER key to exit
Press HOME key to continue
I even accidentally let go of the "VOL+" & "VOL-" buttons once while testing this a few times but quickly pushed them back down again and was still given the factory reset screen so this method works even with a little goof like that. This worked since holding down "VOL+" & "VOL-" the buttons was found to actually be unnecessary.
ENJOY!
NOTE: "HOME key" = "∩" button
NOTE 2: After some discussion with others, I decided to "take one for the team" and experiment with software version 1.4.1 update. I manually updated my Nook Tablet to software version 1.4.1 via the software download from bn.com. I applied to update and then did a factory reset of the device after booting into v1.4.1. I can confirm that if your NT has been updated to v1.4.1 then a FACTORY RESET will reset your NT to factory default settings of software version 1.4.1 and your NT will not revert to v1.4.0. It seems that B&N has pulled another fast one by over-writing the device's original factory software as well with this update. I was able to revert my NT to v1.4.0 via AdamOutler's Restore Barnes & Noble Nook 1.4.0 from SDCard afterwards with only the one issue. The "∩" button was not working after the device initially booted up into v1.4.0 but applying a second factory reset to the device solved this issue.
Finally someone else try it I have posted this in my tips and trick thread. Thanks ill update later the link to this post as its more detailed

Am I the only one having this problem?
Hey RegLinUsr, will this root method restore from ANY root method, like Indirect or Snowball? Or does it have a specific set of circumstances it needs to get you back to factory reset?
In other words, does this unroot the tablet, or does it just reset the tablet to a previous state, root/nonroot notwithstanding?

When you do a factory restore, you are basically got a brand new nt from the day you bought it. If it came with 1.4.0, then it will be reimaged to that, but if you got the newer batch that comes with 1.4.1, then you will have to use the acclaim sd method to get it back down to 1.4.0 in order to root.
Right, I got that. What I mean is, if I did this on my Indirect-rooted tablet, would it undo the root and restore it to stock 1.4.0 like it had just come out of the box?

It doesn't restore to 1.4.1
My Nook came with 1.4.0 and was rooted. But I can now factory restore only to 1.4.1

This would be so much easier if we could use some type of imaging software like clonezilla or acronis to backup or restore.
FWIW, I did a factory reset last night by powering the nook on while pressing the n key only (none of the volume keys). I was presented with factory reset menu and reset the nook. Even though it was originally loaded with 1.4.0, the factory reset did not revert back to that version rather just maintained the current version - 1.4.1 - that was on the nook perior to the factory reset.

Just as I was saying, you will get an unrooted 1.4.0 stock after you do factory restore, or an unrooted 1.4.1 if you got the newer batch.
It was the ad-hoc way of "unroot" a few weeks back before Indirect got us one click unroot. We have come a long way...
This will not reset an NT to software version 1.4.0 if it already was a software version 1.4.1 from the factory. If the NT was purchased with v1.4.1 as default then that NT will have to wait for a rooting method that completely bypasses B&N bootup.
This method will undo Indirect's rooting method and should undo other's as well but that will have to be verified by people that have used other methods since I've only used Indirect's.

Nope. Not true. I had 1.4.0 originally and rooted it via the usb drivers/Nook&Zergy method. Having unrooted the device I am still stuck with 1.4.1 no matter what form of Factory Restore I use. And the acclaim_update does not work for me. I'm sending for some 2GB microSD cards. Hope springs eternal!
Thanks for the answers, guys

Mine came with 1.4.0 and received the 1.4.1 via OTA. When I reset the device, it reverted to 1.4.0. Did your device come with 1.4.1? That may be why yours is only going back to 1.4.1.
Unless I didn't do the factory restore right, my NT which came with 1.4.0 reset to 1.4.1. My 16GB Sandisk SDHC card would not work with the acclaim_update.zip. I purchased a 4GB Sandisk microSDHC card with adapter at Walmart for $9.88 (cheapest they had) and this worked with the acclaim_update.zip.
Can somebody verify that the factory restore when done right really does restore 1.4.0 rather than 1.4.1?

Getting panicky. I had root previously then got "upgraded" to 1.4.1. Have tried multiple ways of getting back to 1.4.0, all have which have left me with an unrooted Nook with 1.4.1.

No you are not. I received the update on the 26th...and judging by the posts it seems as if the OTA updates that were sent out during that time have a little something extra blocking the downgrade. I tried several different sd cards numerous times (more than 10), factory resets - more than 10. I have tried the register/deregister process and quickly turning off the wi-fi. The process runs, however, when finished it still reads 1.4.1.
No further updates to this method will be post here and any further updates to this method will only be posted in the Developer's Section Thread from now on.

Thank you. I was getting paranoid. If we can't get a fix for this, I'll be off to ebay.

I see people is still a bit confused. This is alternative easier way of make a hard reset AKA "8 failed reboot reset" it will reset the /system to factory NOT /data, for wipe data AKA erase/de-register for the nook, AKA factory reset for most android devices you have to go to settings> device info > erase and de-register device. ALL the users that get the 1.4.1 should do the erase/de-register and after that using the acclaim_update.zip will take you back to 1.4.0 (This is the only one that does the job to revert back to stock 1.4.0), after that use this method to bring the "N" button back to life (In replacement of the 8 reboot reset trick), once done all that you'll have a fresh 1.4.0 out-of-the-box. Then go ahead and use the method you feel more comfortable with to root and block OTA.
* Hard reset - reset the /system folder to factory (removing gApps, restoring bloatware, removing root, etc)
* Factory reset - will wipe /data (All your installed apps will be gone)
PS: This thread should be renamed to Hard Reset not factory reset as i know being an android user for long that when you do a factory reset it will wipe /data

Stock unrooted and goes on bootloop with wifi on

I need some help. I have a stock unrooted ATT device. Every time i turn on the wifi it goes on a bootloop, but when the wifi is off its fine. I tried to soft and hard reset but no luck. Any suggestions?

Folks use the terms "soft reset" and "hard reset" a bit liberally. Both typically refer to simply rebooting the phone (either within the OS, or with the button combo, respectively). But sometimes people will say "hard reset" to mean a factory reset.
Try a factory reset, if you haven't done so (of course back up any important personal data first). Or download the RUU and run it. Again, this will wipe user data, so backup what you want to keep before running the RUU.
I ran the reset through the OS. Is that considered a hard reset or factory reset? Now i tried going through the stock recovery using the buttons and wiped cache and wipe data/factory reset. It seemed to clear the bootloop problem with wifi. Is there a difference doing a reset through the OS vs through the buttons? Thanks for your help.

"Reset phone" in Settings is the same as a factory reset, and is same as doing it in recovery. Although keep in mind that "factory reset" is a bit of a misnomer. All it does is wipe the user data (/data) partition. It doesn't do anything to the current ROM/OS installed; despite popular misconception that it will somehow "revert" the OS if its been updated.
The term "hard reset" is a term that is used a different ways by different people. So I try to avoid use of it altogether. HTC specifically uses the term "hard reset" to be the same as factory reset:
http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8/howto/465049.html
Others will sometimes use the term "hard reset" to mean simply a forced reboot using the device specific button combo (in the case of the M8, holding down power and vol up).
In any case, you've already done a factory reset and wiped cache. So the only other thing I can suggest is running the RUU. To do this, go to the following webpage, and follow instructions near the bottom under "Manual system update instructions":
http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8-att/news/
RUU is pretty much the nuclear option, it will rewrite a complete software image (ROM, radio, recovery, bootloader, etc.) to the phone, and possibly/hopefully repair anything that may be causing your issue.

Something went wrong while rooting

So I rooted my Galaxy Grand Prime (SM-G530W android 5.1.1) following this guide: skyneel .com/ root-samsung-galaxy-grand-prime-sm-g530w
Odin gave it a pass and everything works fine and it boots. Except for the part where it boots to a blank homescreen (just the wallpaper that I can't interact with) and then loads the lockscreen like 5 minutes later. I can unlock it from there and access only apps that are in my task manager which include settings and snapchat. I get about 2 minutes before settings crashes, and then all I can access is the lockscreen for a bit until it starts working again. My phone constantly vibrates as everything crashes one by one (it gives me the unfortunately x has stopped message; things like media storage server, contacts, touchwiz crash). I can access camera but cant take pictures because media storage crashes. Same with phone but contacts crashes. I've tried clearing the cache partition but that didn't help. SuperSU IS on my phone
TLDR: rooted phone, now everything is crashing constantly, making phone pretty much unusable. Lock screen and notification center is all that works consistently
I did make a backup before using this guide: techrepublic .com/article/how-to-create-a-full-backup-of-your-android-device-without-root/
Sounds like you might not be on the correct build that that root guide is meant for. Did you confirm that you were on the G530WVLU1AOFB update as shown in Settings > About Phone > Build Number? If so, a factory reset might help. If not, that's what caused this and you will need to reload the original firmware via Odin and root with the method for your particular update.

Yes, I did make absolute that I do have that exact version. I'm currently downloading my stock firmware from SamMobile (I'm with Fido/Canada).
Are you saying to factory reset then try and root again?
It should be rooted already. My suggestion is to reset it now. If that does not work, then flash the stock firmware via Odin and try again.

By reset it, do you mean through settings?
And if I reset it, can I restore from backup? I have some game progress that I don't really want to lose
Yes, or through recovery. Depends on what kind of backup and what kind of game it is as to whether it can be restored.

It's an adb backup done through android sdk
I dunno what the game is or what kind of backup it supports, so couldn't tell you. Either way, I doubt your phone will be fixed without doing some kind of reset. Either via factory reset or reloading the firmware with Odin, which often resets the phone as well, though it depends on the firmware.

Does the reset keep root?
A factory reset will, but not if you reload the firmware via Odin. Root is placed in the /system partition and a factory data reset wipes /data.
Alright, I'm factory resetting now
Okay apparentlty I'm not root after the factory reset.
Alright, I rooted again, and now it works. Thanks.
Unrelated, but which SDK do I download for Xposed framework? I know it's SDK22, but I'm not sure between arm, arm64, and x86 (for a SM-G530w)
