[Q] Help!! Messaging problem - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a rooted SGS2 running Siyah 2.3 and Touch X-Power, with LauncherPro. I have the stock messaging app. When I receive texts from certain people in my contacts list, I get a notification but when I open the text to read it, I'm taken straight to the message create screen and can't read the text. No matter which way I try to enter the messaging app, I can't open the text or any previous ones that I've received from them.
This also happens if I have Handscent running, the message is accepted by the stock app but not Handscent... It's driving me mad.
Any ideas? Can I remove the stock app so that it isn't there at all and use something else like Handscent as the default?

If the app doesn't force close then it sounds like its a problem with either what you are doing or something other than the app.
But yea, you can remove the app and just use handcent if you really want to. Get Root Explorer from the market if you haven't already (its like £2 or something). Then navigate to system > apps > you will see a whole bunch of apks. Find MMS.apk and delete it.
Hope that helps.

Did you mess around with the settings?

Bone stock Android Messaging App?

The motoblur is honestly not that bad but there are a couple things I miss from the bone stock Android message app.
1. The ability to delete all message threads. I do not like that the motoblur version makes you enable multiple select first and then you have to select them all individually.
2. The ability to send on enter from the on screen keyboard.
So I'm wondering if the default message app is in the market or if the stock Android one can be installed?

Agreed. I dont like this SMS message limit.
i think your only bet is to get another sms app. handcent in market can do all that listed plus more. plus you can change the theme to be "default" android look.

Messaging app

I noticed that none of the messaging apps I looked for in the market showed up. I was looking for a recommendation for a messaging app that works well with the flyer/view. I had side loaded handcent but I had to remove it. Every time I reboot the tablet, handcent resend my text messages. Nothing I did could stop that from happening. I tried to use chomp sms but every time I clicked the button saying I had already donated, it would fc on me. So now I am trying to find a messaging app that I can use to replace the stock one.

GO Contacts EX (missed calls? deafult phone number?)

Hello all!
I've installed Go Contacts EX on my Galaxy Ace and I came across these 2 issues:
1. I cannot clear missed calls log, even when I start the app and enter Missed calls section. "Clearing" it from Notification bar doesn't work either, because the number just increases +1 every time I miss a call... I have to use Phone (stock app) for this??
2. Also, using Contacts (stock app) I've setup default call numbers for contacts which have more than one number under them. Apparently, GO Contacts is aware of this [there's a star next to the default number]. However, it keeps asking me which number I want to use whenever I want to make a call or send a text message! It's really annoying! With the old stock app, all I had to do was slide my finger right or left respectively.
Has anyone else experienced this? Can it be fixed? Am I missing something?
Thanks,
Zeka

which ROM are u using ?
and go contacts ex probably cannot clear the call log. this is an android limitation for 3rd party apps to be able to clear missed calls.
(i use exDialer and have same issue, but there is a solution for exDialer - i use an app called NotiGo which requires root, this app helps exdDialer to clear calls.)
btw, if u miss the swipe to call feature from Samsung Roms, try exDialer - it has this feature.
Hello Amrith,
I'm using the stock (Vodafone) Samsung ROM. Haven't tinkered with device much, just rooted it and upgraded OS to version 2.3.5. That's it.
Seems like a poor decision to make log clearing proprietary to stock apps. Doesn't leave much room for creativity there.
It's not the swype feature that I miss, it's the effortless use of default phone number. It seems my (second) regular phone can't be beat when it comes to quick dialing & replies...
Thanks for your reply nonetheless.

Use titanium backup to make go contacts ex a system app. it will now clear missed call notifications.
I've try the method using Titanium Backup
it takes forever to finish...
then i reboot my phone and the apps had already gone...
it had been deleted...
If you want to make go contacts Ex a system app, follow this process. Titanium backup doesnt work sometimes.
Download root explorer or file manager app from market. After downloading, open root explorer or file manager. Go to sd card or data/app and copy go contacts ex's apk and paste it in system/app and set permissions to

Reboot and enjoy.

Stock messaging app & embedded URL's ?

guys I have a question: does the stock messaging app NOT have an option or setting or something to tell it what to do with embedded links? when I press on a link, the response options I get are for the whole message [like save, forward, whatever] not for the link. it doesn't seem to recognize the link even though it is properly highlighted...
I was hoping to get out of the "two competing messaging apps" cycle but gosms at least knows what to do
if you are rooted then just delete the stock apk and keep gosms.
Have you seen the same problem with the default msg app?
never used stock. i use att messaging on cm9.i like having voicemail transcribed and messages all in one app. embedded urls work fine with it. also work on google voice. thats why i suggest just deleting stock. there are better ones out there. like you said gosms works fine.

[Q] Restoring Deleted Texts

Hi All,
I'm new here, clearly. I did a fair amount of searching (albeit I may have overlooked the one thread to answer my question), but I need some help. I'm not familiar with the dev side of phones, nor am I very educated by any means.
I recently somehow deleted all of my texts on my vwz galaxy s4 32gb blackmist. I can see that when I open a contact and view the history - the text messages still exist there. I tried the Dr. Fone app by wondershare (and paid for it). Didn't work. I just rooted my phone to see if that would help, and while successful in the rooting, still have found that I can not revive my dead texts.
Any help would be sincerely appreciated.
Much thanks,
Matt
I too have deleted text messages from my phone when clean flashing ROMs. To restore, download the Verizon Messaging app from the Play Store. Set is as your default messaging app, and refresh the messages. Then open your regular messaging app and it should update with the old text messages.
After this you can uninstall the Verizon app. I use Hangouts for text messaging and for me it's a 3 step process: run Verzion meesaging, then load the standard Messaging apk, and then finally run Hangouts.
Good Luck!

Thanks so much for the advice; I did download the vzw messaging app and set it as default. I don't see a "refresh" for this app - but have toyed around and think I've tried everything to no avail.
I'm trying my best here to not sound like an idiot - but I'm not sure how to 'refresh.' I still do see quite a bit of messages in the history of each contact.
Do i need to go into settings to make default app or simply just set it when it asks?
Any more advice?
Thanks again.
That app seems to imply that it only lets you restore messages that have been synced with Verizon in the last 90 days. That makes more sense. I didn't think they kept a user-accessible log of all SMS messages (could be wrong).
