Turn my Fascinate into a mini tablet for my children? - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

SO i just got a GSII for xmas and I want to pass down my old phone to my children so they don't bug me to let them play with my new phone all the time
Can anyone create a rom package for me that would allow them to only get on wifi, play games, and surf the internet?
If not can anyone give me some instructions for how to disable calling and data all the time?
Thanks,

when the phone is deactivated it can no longer make calls or use data. It will only be able to use wifi to do everything you need. Its like an iPod now.

Deactivated phones can still dial 911... That may be an issue for some people.
I know on the Eris forum, someone came up with a script to disable the CDMA/EVDO raidio and the dialer app.

I can make a rom. Just pick the rom that you want (MIUI.US, cm7, cm9, etc., or even stock)

xboxfanj - I'd like to do this also. The ROM version doesn't matter to me. My daughter wants to use the phone as a media player. If you're willing to help out with this, THANKS A MILLION in advance.
Please let me know if you need anything from me.
Dan

Miui or touchwhiz is ideal for a children. Cyanogenmod is too advanced and or ugly looking.

I have 2 that I am wanting to do this with and would love this!!!!!

Why couldn't you just use root explorer to remove the phone.apk
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda premium

I think that might mess up the market access...

You can also put a PIN on the phone functionality. Not sure if this only applys to GSM phones, but under security - there is a Set up SIM card lock.
Edit: hmm yeah, don't see it on the fascinate.

+1 This would be nice to have in miui or touchwiz as mentioned earlier. Or cm7, I'm easy.

Just got new phones for me and the wife. I've figured out how to do it on my old X, but still having issues with the wife's old Fascinate. Anyone come up with anything for this yet?

easiest way to do it would be to deactivate it and then either use a custom launcher to hide the apps, or get a locking app and password protect the phone and whatever else app. then you don't need to have a custom rom or anything and you still know the password if you did need to access those apps in an emergency.

Im thinking just disabling the plan would be the easiest thing to do ...

Why not just put it in airplane mode that's what I did on my old log ally now wife and kids play games on it

Is Verizon blocking installs of tethering apps on 2.3?

A handful of my co-workers on various Verizon Android phones were saying that Gingerbread updates stop tethering apps from working, even if rooted and side-loaded.
I would like to try CM7 since it just released, but I can't lose my tethering! Am I worrying about nothing?
I'm using WiFi tether on CM7 and it works fine. You shouldn't have to worry since CM7 is not built by Verizon or anything, so they can't block tethering apps in the OS.

Good to hear! I'll probably give CM7 a whirl once it's stable.

Can you link the wifi tether you use please, and let me know if you changed any settings. I'm rocking MIUI, not sure if that matters or not but doesn't hurt to try.
Thanks

I'm using this WiFi tether app: http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com/files/wifi_tether_v3_1-beta2.apk
Once installed, I went to the settings, and changed the Device-Profile to Google NexusOne. Works great and it shouldn't matter if it's CM7 or MIUI.
I'm on the newest miui using wifi tether app with no problems

They are blocking tethering on stock roms, so if you are running CM7/MIUI etc you will be fine.
You may have to sideload. Verizon asked Google to hide certain apps, like PDAnet, from the market. This violates their net neutrality agreement, and they are being sued over it. Verizon stock updates are also set to tattle on you if you tether. If running touchwiz, I believe you need a modified kernel with dummy tether.

For devices the Verizon is giving an official Gingerbread build, they are slipping in ways to disable Wireless Tether. It's also hidden in the market, but it's easy to find an APK to install yourself. However, if you're running Gingerbread on the fascinate, you're doing it on a custom ROM, which doesn't have that nasty bit of Verizon code.

I am 99% certain I know the answer to this, but I just want to be 100% sure;
I am running SuperClean 3 Milestone 1, TW Launcher, and KGB Kernel with Voodoo enabled on my Fascinate. I just installed http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wireless_tether_2_0_7.apk, but haven't tried it yet. Is Verizon going to know if I am tethering with this configuration?
Thanks!
I think it honestly depends.
If you are using it to seach the web and do basic surfing than i dont think it matters to them.
If you start streaming Netflicks at HD quality or Bit Torrents [heavy bandwidth], they might suspect something.
I have used both the wifi tether and barnacle on ICS and GB for quick and dirty usage and i have never had VZW say a thing to me.
That is just my personal experience.
My $0.02:
I am running SC3 Milestone 2 and the KGB FA16 Kernel and have had no trouble tethering with my tablet or laptop using wifi tether 3.1 Beta 6.
You can pick your Beta flavor for the app using the link CCampos provided.
I have not tethered. Though I want to. (Hotspot feature) don't want Verizon to suspect something and then charge me.
Can't they charge me if they find out?
If I'm running CM7, will they still know?

My (very limited) understanding as of right now is that a custom ROM alone is not enough to keep Verizon in the dark. A think you need a custom kernel as well to be safe, and never use the Verizon hot spot app. Am I right?

Maybe Verizon can't block you from tethering with this app, but can they monitor if you are? And then hit you with a charge later, or drop you from service?
My. 02 cents.....I use an App called Open Garden Wifi with no problems at all.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Just throwing this out there: I've never seen any *confirmed* reports of Verizon retroactively charging customers for "illegal" tethering, or ending your service/contract. Not sure why people get so worried about getting caught, it's not like the phone police are gonna come take you to jail.
If I'm wrong on this and Verizon is in fact charging those who tether (who don't pay Verizon's tethering charge) or terminating their contracts, I'd love to see evidence to the contrary.
I ran up 18 gb last month. From Xbox live and other teathering because its my only access. Never have issues.

Its honestly about how much data you end up using, if you go crazy and start using 50gb then they will want to switch you.
They give warnings before they do anything and they are starting to throttle people after a certain point.
You can try this for USB Tethering - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424676
He claims to found a way to hide it but they still know how much data you use.
Basically, don't use a desktop browser. It's one of the #1 ways to get the tether police on your ass. People are getting nastygrams after only using the "desktop useragent" feature of Dolphin HD 2-3 times.
Otherwise, native tethering (remove TetheringManager2.apk if on a stock ROM) works best. Only one that isn't adhoc.
OK. So I was in iHell for a few years and got pretty good with the file system/ jailbreaking. So I've since been paroled (from Jail-breaking :l ) and PRESTO!!! Im a noob again.
Im still debating on flashing but im gonna root for sure. I need to check my facts here. I can root via any mentioned method. I'll need to install titanium (?) to freeze that network check to use the native hotspots. (The name of that file escapes me but I can search it up later)
Anything else for now? Is busybox worth it?
On a semi-related note, I've not had multiple ROMs available to me. What's the benifit to other Roms? I mean what does CM have that stock doesn't? Is there a break down or spread sheet to compare capabilities?
This may sound goofy, but I can already do everything that I wanted my old iPhone to do on stock, but if flashing will bring more, cooler, and
as yet unimagined toys to my newly Android enriched life, I'm all about flashing. What say you XDA?
Sorry for the long post. Caffeine makes me type a lot.

Well follow the guide inn general about how to flash custom binaries, it'll help. Also, most rooms take care of the tetheringmanager2.apk sup you don't need to do anything else, it works out of the box. Make sure to use a mobile user agent while browsing, and you should be fine.
As a starting point, I suggest unnamed or icscrewed (both roms I've personally tried and that both are great)
The most common side effect of having a custom ROM is the desire to show it off, awesome battery life, good support and limitless customization. Just read before you do anything and you'll be golden.

Google Music Only Allowing 4 Deactivations Per Year

I read today on Pulse that Google music is only allowing 4 device de-activations per year. What that means for us every were installing a new rom and using Google music, most of the time its seeing our device as a new device because of a new rom. They are only allowing 10 devices and once you get that full you have to deactivate one to add your new rom....I changed my rom 3 times last week alone.
Anybody have an idea about a work around for this?
This was just an FYI for anybody that didn't know.

As fast as it sucks, it gets better.
Google changes mind about device deactivations
Unofficially NOTEd
It's like using a banking app, back up data in tibu and you won't need "re-install" or activate the phone again. If I backup my banking app and restore it, I don't need to verify my device.
What if they tracked the deactivated devices and only allow 4 re-activations per year?
What if...
Let's wait to see what they decide to do. They are trying to figure it all out right now.
For a very limited time, google is allowing you to deactivate all your old devices while they upgrade their system. Good luck guys

That's only if/when you restore apps WITH DATA, which is generally not a good idea when you're switching out roms and kernels.

[Q] Fascinate on Page Plus

Does anyone here use the Fascinate with Page Plus Cellular? If so, have you had any issues? I'm looking for a new phone and possibly new provider, and Fascinate+Page Plus seems like a good combo, but I want to check to make sure. Has anyone tried it with JB roms? Yes it will work - I haven't had any luck making or receiving calls on anything other than a TW based rom though - AOSP roms do not register on the cell network or something - I've been asking this question all around and cannot get an explanation why or if there is a fix.
As for wifi tethering or foxfi I'm not sure - I just tried wifi tethering and it didn't seem to work. I can try foxfi could you send me the APK?
