Warning: Aluminum Back Scratches REALLY Easily - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Just a warning to all Prime owners. Unless you plan on only putting the Prime on soft surfaces, get a protector/case or be prepared for scratches.

I too learned about this the hard way.
~Sigh, major scratch on the back ~
I would recommend one of skinomi's skins to cover the back, whether transparent or with a finish as a solution to those whom do not wish to use cases/sleeves.
I personally bought the brushed steel finished one; it looks and feels amazing.
It adds a bit of grip which makes it easier to hold the device.

Yeah. This is why I usually set it face down. The screen is ironically much tougher than the back.

Does it come with a plastic cover on it out of the box? The temporary sort I mean. That would be nice to be able to leave on their until I find a case that I like.

Right now i walk it around with a micro fiber cloth large enough for it to sit and cover up. At least till my case arrives...lol

Skinomi since day 1.

Saved my self 25$ and put this one on.. for less then 2.25$ and I still have over 20ft left.
If you can not see it.. that is the point.

Do talk.
I want some kind of protection, but none that will give up the nice TFP form factor.

That's sweet - I can actually see where it isn't around the camera - lol.

Not the best but better than Skinomi imo.

It just comes wrapped in plastic and is sitting in it's spot in the box. It's really loose type plastic though and would not be practical to leave on there.

I did actually leave it in the plastic that it came wrapped in until I could have my friend's tf101 sleeve. It doesn't match up to the ports of course but it offers protection against scratches.

Thanks for the info. That is unfortunate, I was hoping it had the stick on type plastic covers like Apple loves to use. Guess I need to go ahead and look into a stick on cover at least.

This looks awesome! I usually don't care for a lot of CF stuff, but this looks like it represents it quite well!

So my question is, if i get a skin for the back and a screen protector for the front, will it still dock with no issues?

Yes. All skins should have holes for the ports

I think he is asking if it's too thick, not if the port is covered.

My Prime is a little bit loose in the dock, so I don't think this will be a problem.
If it is a problem, you can always remove that little piece of soft material in the docking hinge which should protect the metal back. You have some more room then.

Here is a cover I made from a black 2mm thick foam sheet from Micheal's craft store. The foam I used is called "Silly Winks Foam Sheets, 12x18, 2mm thick, $0.89." Basically, I just got the foam sheet, cut it down to 9 3/4 x 6 1/2 inches, and cut a slot out for the speaker and camera. I attached it with some wide double sided tape from 3M, making sure to edge the cover with tape very carefully so no corner comes loose.
I found the foam to be nice in the hand for non-slippiness, and it also takes care of that crunching sound that you can get if you set your tablet down on a hard surface that has some small grains of dirt or other stuff on it. I havent had to take one of these off yet, but the tape shouldnt do anything bad to the front cover, or its finish.
Enjoy.

Heh, that's pretty slick. Hmm think would work great with adhesive that comes on all the bump mail...comes off really easy (has a rubbery feel) but holds pretty dang well.
Looks good though.

yup, its the same stuff basically as the stuff they use on envelopes.
Interesting, going to swing by Michaels or Ben Franklin's tomorrow while I finish up Christmas shopping. I'm assuming 2mm is as thing as it gets?
Good job. Yes, I was thinking I might have to cover the amethyst gray.
Some said that it looked too purple. But, I don't think so. I actually like
the color. In some light almost looks gunmetal.
The only issue I see you having is since it's not exactly flush with the surface, I'm afraid that the foam can get caught on things. For example when you put it down or stuff it into a bag.

They might have some that are a bit thicker, but 2mm just seemed like the best thickness to me. They also have other colors i think, some pretty bright...
yeah, it can get caught in a bag if you dont put it in just right, but doing a good tape job takes care of most of that problem.

Not exactly. The adhesive used isn't remotely the same as, for example, a sticker. If it's the envelope stuff, it leaves absolutely no residue. Besides, he didn't say this is be all end all solution.

yeah, i love aluminum cases on electronics, but they are so smooth that they just dont give me a solid grip all the time. Also this helps to grip the surface of whatever i set it on, like the rounded arms of the couch. Really gives you that perfect couch commando angle.

Alternative white ATT battery cover?

Is there any battery covers with the same matte style like the black note, but for the white note? I don't care for how smooth and susceptible to marks it is. I'm considering swapping out for the black one if there is no alternative.
I don't like the feel of the white back either very slippery.

I had something like this for my last phone (iphone 3gs). Make sure that you take it off once in a while to clean off the dirt that stuck in all that holes; dirt could scratch the surface of the back cover from friction. The look is awesome, btw.
Thanks. Good advice. Its also the lightest case I have.

I find that applying a full body shield that is a wet application type that yields a rubbery like finish is best route. I felt the same way about it being slippery so ordered one and have it sitting on my desk now waiting to be applied. I discovered this by accident when I applied one to my Vibrant and fixed the problem I hadn't intended to remedy. I know alot of people don't like wet type because of the rubbery like finish, but this may be a plus for you at this point, I know it is for me.

Clear case?

Has anyone come across a clear case similar to a Spigen Ultra Hybrid, or a Ringke Fusion, I have searched every site imaginable and cant find one. Its weird that Spigen would make one for the Nexus 5 which is basically a non textured rubberized back but not one for the Note 3 which has that pleather back to it.

Time to get a white permanent marker :highfive:
BTW if you buy a replacement cover from eBay (i got mine because I wanted to shave it down a little so the QI pad wouldn't buldge.. for about 11 bucks?)
it's slightly thinner than the OEM one. Feels & looks exactly the same though. I bought it from a seller named "playebuy8". I can't vouch for any other seller but i'm quite happy w/ mine

With the back on it fits snug. With it off you can tell the difference but it doesn't feel like it moves. I shook it to see if the battery would come loose but it didn't. The camera sticks out a little further than the case.

I kinda wish they had a transparent housing now, so you can see all the internals and not just the battery/microSD
that back panel IS just plastic. it should not be too hard to "hack it up" with a dremel leaving all the important bits in place.
are there replacement back panels available yet ? I won't do it to mine but I would do it to a replacement I do NOT like how the camera sticks out.
I wish UAG would make a clear version of their case for the Note III (they do for icrap) they we could use the nice replacement battery covers you can get on ebay.

I originally had the all aluminum case which i loved the look silver back and black sides but i had alot of signal loss so i grabbed the Neo hybrid case which was great with no signal loss and wireless charging worked great. I forgot when i ordered the alum i also order the glass backed Faraday version. I got that this weekend and even though i dont get any signal loss when using it i do have issues while wirelessly charging. It will start the charge than after a few seconds it will flicker a few times than turn off. I can confirm the wireless charge does work fine in the Neo or if i remove the glass back before putting it on the charge.... Does anyone else have this problem.
I have the aluminum brown leather back, and can confirm the wireless charging works without any problems, no need to remove the back cover.

Homemade backplate using genuine leather

So I also own a Note 3 and dig the leather back but don't dig that it is fake as hell. I picked up the ZU when it went on sale about a month or so ago and though I do like the glass material I felt I was worrying too much about it. I couldn't find a case that I liked that fit in the dock and just kept worrying about scratching the back up. So... I just bought some leather sample and some el cheapo screen protectors and went to work.
I quite like the result though cutting out the camera hole was the worst part. Another good thing is that this is easily removed and reused if so desired.

Thanks dude. Nah, I used some 3m double stick tape. It's the stuff I believe they use to put spoilers on cars. That leather isn't going anywhere. You can see how I laid it down in the second pic. I double stuck it onto an illumishield back screen protector so I can easily peel it off and put it back on at will with no loss of stickiness in case I want to switch back to my incipio case.

Thanks, it looks really great. I have to find out how to do it by myself without rear sample protector.
I would suggest just buying a cheap rear protector because it would serve as the template for the cutout and also allow you to remove it easily otherwise you'd have to stick it on directly on the glass which would be a more semi permanent solution. But if you really want to do it without the back protector then just take a piece of paper and etch around with a pencil and you should have a good template to cut around.
I'm thinking of cutting out an opening for the Sony logo but I'm afraid if it might look like cheap. I may try to hunt down some red leather if I can find it on the cheap. Maybe I can find an old school Michael Jackson jacket at the thrift store and chop it up. Also I plan to buy a Muvit Bimat case and removing the clear portion and fit the leather around the bumper area of the case. I think that might be pretty sweet.

But if you really want to do it without the back protector then just take a piece of paper and etch around with a pencil and you should have a good template to cut around.

Yeah, I will have to use a paper. Rear protectors are almost impossible to find in Poland. There are almost no accessories for this phone at all. Thanks for your sugestions.

Well here is a better idea... Just get some wide clear tape, I'd use some clear shelf liner like for cabinets and stick it to the back of the phone then draw your pattern. Peel that off the phone and lay it on some wax paper then glue the leather onto the non stick side of it and cut out the pattern. It is really just a square cutout, the hardest part would be the camera hole. Thank God this thing doesn't have a flash because cutting out that hole was a PITA. That way you will have sticky on one side and leather on the other.
The shelf liner is like 5 bucks at any grocery store.
Thanks a million man! I will try to win this battle on weekend.
Great job you should start charging people to have this done your make a killing dude.
