Europe doesn't have LTE And tether sucks battery faster than any game
But I don't need any kind of mobile connectivity anyway on my Prime, HSPA tether is enough

anyone who buys a 3G tablet likes wasting money or has so much they don't know what to do with free Wi-Fi/USB/Bluetooth tether from smartphone is the only way to go even my 55 year old father knows as much

Yea, I hotspot from my phone now, but if money was no object I'd prefer the setup I previously had with my xoom.

It would be nice, if money was no object. But given that it is, I'm happy tethering my phone; I don't have cause to use my tablet outside of Wi-Fi enabled areas enough to warrant another data plan.
in maine we will not have 4 lte anytime soon, so up here getting some thing lte is a waste.
Because companies like Verizon and At&t limit you to 2GB a month and there's no way you could share the connection with your phone AND tablet for a whole month and not go over that limit?
3G tablet plans cost too much. I just tether to my Galaxy Note as well.
My area doesn't have LTE support. The service providers only just installed new towers a few months ago, and before that my devices were struggling for a signal. What's the point in an LTE device if the most you'll get is hspa?

I am with T-Mo so LTE is not an option, though speeds are acceptable. I would be willing to shell out a bit for 3G on the tablet for the convenience factor. Since I already have a wi-fi only TP though I am not going to buy another tablet just for 3G.

Prior to my contract with Verizon its unlimited and they offer 10 gigs for $50 now which is more than enough. Downloading avg of 18mb a sec its wonderful. Tethering is a dream with my gaze rooted.

It depends on how you use your tablet. If you're home or around places with decent Wi-Fi 80% of the time I agree with you. I travel a lot and anyone who does knows you can't depend on Wi-Fi. At hotels, restaurants, or airports.
So you can either get a 3/4G tablet or tether. Tethering is a pain in the ass. Get out the phone, turn on sharing, connect the tablet, disconnect the tablet, turn off sharing. Forget the latter any your phone's battery is hosed. It's hosed anyway because you can literally watch it run down when Wi-Fi sharing's enabled.
Here's some of the advantages of 3/4G:
- Your tablet's always online and can receive e-mails and messages continually.
- You can just flip it open and use it without having to wait for a gazillion background process to all finish competing for the Wi-Fi signal at the same time.
- Your phone's battery is spared the torture of Wi-Fi (or BT) sharing so it's available for calls when you need it.
- You can split your data across multiple devices. For $20 a month on AT&T (they think it's a non-smartphone) my tablet uses 6ishGB of data. I use 4-6GB on my phone too. I'd get flagged and put on a tiered plan if I didn't have seperate devices so it's actually cheaper to have two data plans.
While it's not for everybody it has its advantages. I wouldn't personally own a non-3/4G tablet.

I can leave my wifi tether on literally all day and do very little harm to the battery. Tmobile G2 (HSPA+ 15down2up)
Also there is no conflict with Tmobile's data and phone services. I can answer a call without interrupting my connection.
The trick is to be reasonable about your expectations.
IE: dont stream HD youtube all day, or you'll kill the phone.
I use a 4G (has 3G support) Hotspot device instead of buying additional data plans for various devices.
While I could tether to my phone which is still 3G, when I am in the field, I normally need my phone while using data at the same time and tether would also reduce the battery of the phone quicker as well.
With the 4G hotspot, I can tether up to 5 devices at the same time which includes not only tables, slates, netbooks, notebooks, regular desktops with a WiFi adapter but also even my phone which still has 3G.
In my field kit, I carry a battery unit which will power the 4G hotspot for more than 14 hours continuously, so I can do data for longer than most of the device I could connect to it without AC power.
I can and have many times provided data access to people who were with me who had only WiFi enabled devices securely as well.
Most of the time, I just turn the hotspot on, and stick it in my pocket and have hi-speed Wifi available where I am walking.
I don't use free Unsecure WiFi hotspots.. only secure WiFi connections

I would like to be able to tether my HTC View to my iPhone 4 via bluetooth to share the internet connection. It works successfully via MiWi with the wireless hotspot. I would like to use the bluetooth instead though since the wifi hotspot kills my battery and makes my phone physically hot to the touch after a few hours of it. Is this possible?
The 2 devices do pair through mywi using bluetooth. But when i click to connect and use for internet access the View just sits there and says connecting.

Sorry, I don't have a solution for you. I was just more curious if your wireless carrier has found out about you tethering and tried to force you into a tethering plan? I really want to jailbreak my iPhone for tethering but it sounds like there isn't a fullproof way of not letting carriers find out you are doing this.

I've been using tethering for about 6 months now. In the beginning it was only when wifi wasn't available for my laptop, or my wife's iPhone on trips (she has 200mb data)
They have not complained yet but it was very low data usage before. I'm sure my data will increase now so I will have to see. I work in IT, everywhere I go has wifi. I've used 702mb of data this month (1/2 through cycle). I'm normally around around 300 - 400mb of data a month. I'm also grandfathered into unlimited plan, so they get $30 a month from me for data. I doubt they are complaining much since i'm such a light user. This bill will be my first full month with the view, so we will see if I ever get any complaints.

Ah ok, well keep us updated. I too am grandfathered in on unlimited data on my iPhone 4. And I also am a fairly light user (< 1GB/month), but everyone makes it sound like the carriers are jumping on illegal tethering pretty hard. Regardless of how much data is actually used, they know from the ports that tethering is happening. I almost wouldn't mind paying for a tethering account, but the worst part about doing it is that you lose unlimited regular data.
Reading your posts, I can't understand why tethering is "illegal" or forbidden. I you pay for a data plan, why can't one use it on any device?

Its not "illegal", in that I don't think you can get thrown in jail or sued for it.
But you agree to the carrier's Terms & Conditions when you sign up to use their network, whether you like it or not (or bothered to read them). Violation of the Terms means that the carrier can terminate your service, add charges to your account, or other repercussions, depending on what the Terms state.
Not sure what carrier's policies are in Israel. But in the US, most of the big carriers have specific statements in their Terms of Use, that prohibit tethering other devices to your phone without a tethering specific plan. If you are caught violating this policy, they reserve the right to add that plan to your account, or even drop your account if they want.
And yes, its of course so they can charge you extra. I completely agree that data should be data. And if you pay for a certain amount of data, or on an unlimited plan, then ideologically it should not make a difference if you are tethered or not. But there are many times in life where the most logical or fair concept is not what happens in reality. Especially in the for-profit business world.
No one has any ideas? Surely i'm not the first person who has tried to do this.

Well, since there is no 3g antenna, that means there is no possible way to get 3g, unless you buy a mobile hotspot.

If your on AT&T and have a non-smart phone Samsung Mythic... you can tether it to your iPod Touch (granted you have one) and make an Ad-Hoc network with it via the wireless, then connect to it on your SGP. Battery life is fantastic so you can just keep the other two devices (the phone and iPod) in a backpack or something near you. Tedious but it works, especially since the data is unlimited on a non-smartphone plan (and they don't notice, or at least haven't for the last 2 years) if you Bluetooth DUN tether.

As far as I know, bluetooth tethering won't work with Android. So you'd need a phone with WiFi to share the 3G connection over. If your blackberry doesn't have WiFi, you'd need another device that does as the middle-man. Which becomes a bit of a hassle.
Google your phone and it's modem and make sure you won't get any extra charges for tethering (most phones WILL lead to charges without a tethering plan on unlimited data, but some seem to be hidden). And if you do, just pay for a tethering plan I suppose.

Then there is probably a guide somewhere on how to share it, I don't know whether or not AT&T will see it though, so be warned, I wouldn't risk a smartphone unlimited plan for that kind of thing. In my case, I pay for non-smartphone unlimited data and tether it so I don't really lose anything if I'm caught (It's been over 2 years so far) since it's like $10/month for AT&T 3G HSDPA.

Dont use AT&T im British, but yes my bb is a smartphone. Does that mean there will be extra costs even if i do get unlimeted data?

There is an app called "Nook Color Tether" which is supposed to do Bluetooth tethering. I've got it installed but not yet tested it, but it might be worth a look.

I don't think Bluetooth DUN is possible over Android. I know it is on iOS, but I don't think anyone has gotten it to work with non-Android phones (like a Blackberry or my Samsung featurephone).
You could use your BlackBerry to make a Wireless network, but that COULD impose extra charges depending on your carrier (AT&T charges a good $10+ extra (can't remember the exact).

That depends on the Carrier. Here in the states AT&T requires that you go to a new plan (limited) and charges you for the privilage of sharing your data. Or you can try CM's new undetectable tethering as it is done at a lower level than the providers see.

Interesting, have more info on this? Considering that AT&T detects tethering using browser useragent now (DO NOT USE Dolphin HD or any other browser that uses a desktop useragent on AT&T if you're on an unlimited plan!), there's no way to do undetectable tethering without an encrypted VPN.
To others - whether tethering costs you depends on your carrier. If you're in North America, it's basically guaranteed that your provider wants you to get a special tethering plan. It's usually possible to get around this, but as discussed above - providers try really hard to find ways to bust you. Tethering a Player should not cause any of the AT&T triggers discussed above though - I've been tethering my Tab 10.1 for ages without issue.

The bottom line is No. This device DOES NOT have a hidden/internal antenna and you can't mod it to have one. "External devices" would be a hotspot or cell phone that is sharing it's connection via tethering. Though I wouldn't consider that "3G for SGP", more like, "WiFi for SGP" since that's all it is; You can't make calls over the voice network through that data through your normal phone.
Kind of a silly question in general heh, but unless you go through a good deal of trouble to either get a hotspot device and carry it around, or do the Phone -> iPod Touch -> SGP thing I do; There really isn't any other way to do this.
I have an Optimus phone. Just added a Widgetsoid2 Hotspot toggle, push the button, and presto SGP connected. It is against terms of service on Virgin Mobile, but I plan on getting rid of my phone and getting Truconnect mifi. $5/mo Hotspot (plus .039 per mb). I use less than 100mb on 3G now that I have my SGP5.
You can make calls on wifi or 3G with GrooveIP. That's all I use on wifi, and I tested it tethered to my phone and also works fine.
I've currently got an Epic 4g on Sprint, and with a custom ROM I've been able to use the hotspot feature without actually having the subscription cost on my plan and it hasn't been a big deal.
I'm looking at moving to a Note, and was wondering whether AT&T is going to be able to catch on and give me grief for using the hotspot feature once in a blue moon (literally) if I root the device to get around having to pay an extra $20/mo? I know the extra also goes towards data cap increase, but I rarely use more than 400Mb of cell data so the cap increase is way overkill for me.
Maybe or maybe not,nowdays they are pretty strict about tethering, I got caught after consuming 10GB tethered and thretaned me to downgrade to a tethering plan if I wouldnt desist... Back in the day I would consume like 6-8GB tethered on my iPhone 4 and nothing would happen

Holy cow - I don't expect to tether more than it would take to have net browsing access on my wi-fi xoom or MAYBE my laptop in a pinch, no serious downloads or streaming in mind.

You could always go with Straight Talk for the $50 all you can eat plan.
Since most of us who use this forum are aware of AT&T's draconian policies regarding tethering, especially the one whereby they bump you from unlimited to crappy tethering plan policy, I'm going to ask those of us who are successfully tethering their Atrix with an unlimited data plan to help correct some information.
Basically AT&T is changing their plans, and with 3gb HSPA and 5gb LTE throttling the reality for us unlimited data plan users, I and others would like to know what this has wrought for our tethering capabilities.
Previously AT&T was monitoring our accounts to see if we were tethering, seeing if our phones were using ports and protocols for checking windows update for example(used to determine that your phone is tethered to a PC), or user agent strings, or other means of packet inspection. They were hitting people with the 45$ tethering plan left and right 12 months ago, but now, Verizon has just gotten the smackdown on their charge-for-tether practices, and I recall hearing that AT&T doesn't care about tethering anymore because they are putting most people on the unified data package where a whole set of devices use one pool of allotted bandwidth. Which would mean AT&T can ream those people with encouraged tethering.
But that leaves those of us with an unlimited plan......uninformed. Are they still doing the plan bump if they detect an unlimited user tethering? Furthermore, can they even detect the kind of tethering I've tried before, namely Atrix CM7 connected to HP touchpad CM9, I think built in tethering app. Can't they tell from the amount of hops, its one further on the Time to live?
Or do I have to use PDANET for the encryption?
Surely there must be someone out there using their unlimited with tethering who can chime in, maybe you can say what rom and tether app/built in your using/technique.
And if it's safe, this would make my job so much easier to tether with my laptop. And since that work is volunteer search and rescue flying, this could be invaluable information for me and my team.

Grandfathered unlimited plan here. I'm running neutrino and tether to my iPad mostly and some pc tethering I used about 2 gigs in 3 days and so far so good. No scary text or anything.
Of course ymmv but that's been my experience with tethering so far.

Thanks for the reply, I've tethered roughly 3-4 gb using netflix and some web browsing from Atrix to Touchpad, but that was last Thanksgiving, so I'm sure AT&T's network has changed since then. I guess I'll start off with trying to push 3gb+ using netflix on the touchpad, followed by browsing on the touchpad to see if any warning bells go off at AT&T. Because frankly having freedom to tether is a joy, I used to use my HTC Touch Pro to tether like mad on AT&T going through 5gb with a laptop easily. But that was 2.5 years ago

I have tethered on my unlimited plan, using my Nintendo 3Ds, and my laptop which is running linux, so they probably wouldn't be able to detect the devices easily.

Hi guys,
There is a new company out there called FreedomPop that believes everyone should have access to free internet. They provided 500 mb free internet via either a USB stick or a Wifi hotspot. You pay a refundable deposit for the hardware ($50 for the stick, $90 for the hotspot). They use i think clear's 4g network, and I've gotten pretty good speeds around 1.7 Mbps down.
I ordered the USB stick and plugged it into my prime. It recognized it immediately as an ethernet port. It flashed lights on the stick for a few seconds, then showed that it was connected. I had trouble actually connecting to the internet through the browsers. I don't think this is what finally made it work, but after going to the ethernet settings (they pop up in settings) on JB (stock OTA) then switching from DHCP to Static IP back to DHCP, it finally worked.
It's a pretty nifty trick and is good if you can't enable a wifi hotspot from your phone, or just want an extra 500 mb free per month . You do have to be careful though, as it's an extra $20 a month per gb for their free plan, and they charge you to warn you when you're nearing the 500 mb mark.

Just got mine as well......works on my stock tf201 plus dock. I was trying to use it with a tp-mr3040 as a mobile hotspot but thats not working at the momemt as the modem isnt supported on the 3040.
I was happy with it as far as mobile data goes, but I really wanted to use this to drive my tablet with wifi and google map nav.......now I can only use it with the dock plugged in and .....hmmm......no gps reception
However, the dongle performs awesomely as a data device for the prime. Now I just gotta get my old bluetooth GPS and bolt it onto my prime and go ghetto for awhile.

I've had coverage everywhere I have tried. It uses the clear wire network so wherever they have coverage it works.
NB: if you don't use it at all one month, they charge you $2. It's really stupid if you aren't constantly using it.

I didn't have that problem. I used about 25% of my bandwidth and it just rolled over this month with another 500 meg to go free of charge.
Definitely works with the prime out here in the Philly area.
I also picked up a TP-MR3040 and installed Openwrt on it and now I have a nice ghetto hotspot for my tablets and my phone while Sprint props up their new LTE network. Freedompop will switch to LTE with Sprint sometime this year and with the tp-link router I have a hot spot in my car for the daily commute. I've been rocking tune-in radio and maps just fine during my daily drive and haven't used up much bandwidth at all.

Definitely works with the prime out here in the Philly area.
I also picked up a TP-MR3040 and installed Openwrt on it and now I have a nice ghetto hotspot for my tablets and my phone while Sprint props up their new LTE network. Freedompop will switch to LTE with Sprint sometime this year and with the tp-link router I have a hot spot in my car for the daily commute. I've been rocking tune-in radio and maps just fine during my daily drive and haven't used up much bandwidth at all.

Well, that's a downside. You have to use at least 5 megs per month to get it free. All eaten up in a morning of internet radio going to work and back

There is a new company out there called FreedomPop that believes everyone should have access to free internet. They provided 500 mb free internet via either a USB stick or a Wifi hotspot. You pay a refundable deposit for the hardware ($50 for the stick, $90 for the hotspot). They use i think clear's 4g network, and I've gotten pretty good speeds around 1.7 Mbps down.
I ordered the USB stick and plugged it into my prime. It recognized it immediately as an ethernet port. It flashed lights on the stick for a few seconds, then showed that it was connected. I had trouble actually connecting to the internet through the browsers. I don't think this is what finally made it work, but after going to the ethernet settings (they pop up in settings) on JB (stock OTA) then switching from DHCP to Static IP back to DHCP, it finally worked.
It's a pretty nifty trick and is good if you can't enable a wifi hotspot from your phone, or just want an extra 500 mb free per month . You do have to be careful though, as it's an extra $20 a month per gb for their free plan, and they charge you to warn you when you're nearing the 500 mb mark.

very interesting mate...i´m not interested in internet but in the stick, it´s new for me that a 3g stick works with prime without any special apps or commands, could you maybe look up the model of the stick or possibly some other additional infos about the stick...
