Which Apks Can I Remove from My Phone? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i got an inspire 4g running a sense rom called virtuous unity. i want to remove unneeded apks from my phone like, VoiceDialer.apk and Facebook.apk. which unneeded apks can i safely delete from my phone?

You can do a google search on each apk that your not sure about. Make sure you back up your phone first just in case you remove something you want to keep or you need. There are web sites that list all the apps on cm and tells what they are. I'm sure there is alot of info on your rom.

Editing ROMs

Hi all,
I am relatively new to the android community, so I don't feel confident playing around with large parts of ROMs, however I am interested in trying to edit a ROM so that it has as many of my apps and things as default to save room.
Idealy I would like my ROM to:
-Have only the apps I want and need, so I have started stripping out some I don't
-Have my background of choice and no others
-Have a custom launcher (I am looking at LauncherPro, although i understand this only works on android 2.0 and above so cant intergrate this yet)
I am using the stock T-mobile 1.5 custom ROM uploaded by Paul onto Modaco as the ROM I am editing (Sorry I cannot post a link as this is my first post)
Once I have completed this project I would like to create a tutorial to help other people new to the Android scene, who, like me, don't have the knowledge or confidence to edit the ROM majorly.
My first step is remove the unwanted apps and replace them with the ones I do want. So my first question is what apps are vital to androids running that I wont be able to delete. Also, where can I get the .apks of the apps I want to add in?
Any other help in this project will be greatly appreciated.
Thanx
Aaron
well you can check the wiki for refrence but i due know that you can remove apps like google apps gmail email market market updater .... just remeber not to delete them like remove them and move them to a safe folder on your desk top in case you removed a vital app ok thats what i do

Thanx. I have a copy of the original ROM and the one im editing just in case. Is it just a case of trying it out to see if it works and what i can and cant delete then?
Thanx
Aaron
more or less but its better to know what your removing so check this site shttp://source.android.com/

You have to be careful what you are removing and changing. Removing google talk basically dissables the market which I am not sure why but it does. THere are other apps that are linked that you would not think about. You also must know how to resign the rom zip file. There is an app here called autosign and it works pretty good. Its for themers but it works for moding a rom too. If you want to replace the launcher simply delete the launcher.apk and add in the one you want. The wallpaper backgrounds are usually in the launcher.apk unless you are using a sense rom. Sense uses Rosie.apk and the wallpapers are all in htc.widgetpicker.apk (i think thats what its called).

Blur APK's to remove ?

All,
I have searched the Atrix forum looking for a list of the app names (apk's) that I can safely remove using Titanium Backup. However, I have not been able to locate a complete list so far. I definitely want to remove some of the bloatware on this phone, but I would like to get a list together so I can do it all at once.
Any further info you an provide is much appreciated !

[Project] MIUI Dialer/Contacts for Stock and Eclipse [Zipped APK's/Framework files]

So far, I have downloaded the newest MIUI Rom version, and pulled the APK for Phone, Contacts, and Contacts Provider. I am not sure where to find the rest of what I need. I know how to push them to the phone, but I don't know how to make a flashable version. I tried to push them to my phone as is, and got a FC along for phone, as well as the phone app itself didn't work.
Anyone have more info and want to help?
Edit: I uploaded the files for anyone. They are from MIUI 1.10.14.
Edit 2: Here is the link with the zipped APK's and Framework. It is in my Google Docs account so it should downlod fairly quick for anyone who wants to play with it.

I think u have to decompile and then recompile with correct x2 framework... Could be wrong here...

No idea how to do that, that is what I am getting at. I am just providing what I have dug up to make it easy for someone who has the ability. Or, if someone can learn me what to do, I would be happy to do it myself
If I get free time tomorrow, or this week, I'll gladly see what I can do. With a son due any day I can't make any promises. I've done some of this in the past.
I can get you links to de-compiling and what not tomorrow when I have access to my laptop.

Here is a link from the Fascinate group, it pretty much applies to Android in general though. It goes over the tools needed to decompile and whatnot. I'm sure there might be more to it than this, but it will get you started at least.

Wow... thanks man! Looks a little over what I am comfortable on using/testing myself on my only device. lol
Anyone comfortable with trying this?
It can be done. You will need to add all the framework resources that the apps are calling. Pull the framework from the miui build so that you know what to add.
as far as a flashable zip, can we just repackage your flashable for eclipse nitroglycerine33? When I worked on the Fascinate I just reused a theme zip to be able to flash instead of pushing.
God, how I would love to see MIUI on the X2. I actually just bought an older phone so I could run it.
I tried to upload the APK files and the Framework in 1 zip and it won't let me attach it. Says I am missing a security token. I am going to upload it somewhere else and post the link for you guys.
Added zip with framework and apk's.
Link is not working
Can any one extract these apks and post ?

[Q] Can we have a APK dissable/removable list?

Similar to what we had for the SGS I/II, I would like to have a comprehensive APK List for what we can delete safely and what we need to leave on.
Here is the link:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AthriV78mnxQdE1lVzJOaE8tdmlJc1VjcUFydGhlc2c
It is shared, so we can edit to our needs.
You mean like this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1634624
yep! ty!
Very good post mate and i totally agree when root is available many of us wil want to freeze the bloatware to get even batter battery life it would be great to have a spreadhseet to know what programs are safe to freeze (or remove but ill just freeze them in case)
Bumping this thread this needs to be made a sticky mods like the similar one on the SGSII forums.
Great idea OP, but your Google docs spreadsheet does not seem to be shared properly--it says I have to request access to the file .

It now says it doesn't exist
Spreadsheet loads just fine here, I'm going to bookmark that for future reference, thanks!

Thanks, I've been meaning to ask this, I saw it and a quick Google came up without any useful results.
I would be interested in knowing.
Can't find any reliable info on what it is/does, but I did come across a post on a different forum with some guys who seemed fairly knowledgeable... they were seeking to remove as much bloatware as possible from a previous LG phone... it wasn't an ancient phone though, fairly recent. Anyway, they were able to disable that program without any ill effects...
As for whether it can be disabled on our phone without causing issues, and whether one could go a step further and just delete it... I think the quickest way would be for somebody to give it a try.
Maybe someone who has additional knowledge of LG/AT&T apks would know specifically what this AAT is for.
Found it.
