Just recently started watching netflix a little bit, and after about 10 minutes the phone gets ridiculously hot. It got to the point where I think the phone overheated and froze.
I tried limiting the CPU to 800mhz and set it to conservative, but it is still getting very hot.
Anyone have any suggestions?
Running ICScrewed v1.5.2 (I think that's the version, whatever the latest on it).
Netflix must be running the CPU/GPU at full bore most of the time while streaming content. Unfortunately there's nothing you can do about it - it's the nature of the beast. This device tends to get really hot in extreme processing.
I'm starting to be concerned about the longevity of it. I know it's built around the 32nm mfg process so it's quite efficient but the heat is outrageous for a phone...
My phone got really hot only top left of the phone when I played blood and glory. Pretty weird. When I exit the game it cools back down like nothing ever happened. =\ I'm thinking I just got the phone at the wrong time/place.

Nothing is perfectly efficient, and a product of inefficiency is heat! The more power you use the more heat that's generated. Just like on a computer, the more CPU/GPU intensive things you do the more your computer will warm up.

When I watch Netflix, I would say it gets a little warm - but I would certainly not call it hot.
Possibly another program(s) running in the background consuming additional resources?

The only time Netflix has heated up my phone was when playing on my TV over a MHL adapter, while charging, and pulling the video over data. Normally when I just watch on the phone, using wifi it doesn't heat up.
But as others said, that's a lot of power, and I expected some heat. Even at that set up, it wasn't hot enough to worry me.

So recently i got a htc one x but i was frustrated with the issues the one x had and and one of them was overheting man the phone was super hot when playing games it gos up to 54C and while playing a game you cant charghe your phone becuse it is going to overheat and htc says that is normal (maybe for them but not for me).So i got rid of one x and looking to get a GS3 so how are the temperatures in normal usage and in gaming my GS2 while playing GTA III is not going over 38C.
certainly NOT heat up, it will get warm when you shots video or 10xshots per second .

yeah i saw it that made me open this theard and i think the 2012 phones suck im thinking on going for the htc one s in the end god knows..
Only time my phone gets noticably hot is browsing XDA due to all the frigging adverts!
I seem to have found a combination of activities that can make it seem "hot"
I use a background radio streaming app over 3g, then if I play any kind of game - it runs quite hot, almost uncomfortably.
Mine stays at an average of 31 degrees consistently.

Mines' doing fine, base on SetCPU around 38'degrees for a full 30mins of Nova3 (clocked at 800Mhz, running all 4 cores i think) on my battery, not sure how warm my CPU is
Mine gets quite hot after using it on max brightness after awhile.

In usb host mode the usb port gets pretty warm >40c
Also, i'd imagine the cpu does get pretty warm given how much processing it does.

Samsung should promote this to the Alaskans as a combined entertainment/hand warming device.
so how are the temperatures do they go over 50 when gaming like 30-40mins like the one x i had my s2 while playing gta 3 wont go over 40c i played 1h and 6min
And how is the battery how much can do you get onscreen time? with one x i couldnt go over 2h and are there any issues with the phone like the one x had with screen flex/ripple yellow tint,hardware problems with wifi etc.. i realy expect an honest answer because i had the one x and it was only trubble dont want to make that mistake twice so im thinking galaxy s3 or htc one s

I'm glad to hear that im not the only one that thinks the one x is getting sily hot when gaming aslo the phone overheats if you game and charghe the device at the same time

what app youse using to find the temp ?
it is the battery that heat up. I try different battery, it give better result to cool down.

same here, gets hot while browsing , gaming in the bottom part. the Galaxy Note also gets heat but in the up part around camera.
My phone seems to always be running pretty hot even when it is in power saver. I was just testing and on xda app, but my temperature was at 90 F on power saver. Is that running hot or is that just how the quad core runs?
Just by typing that message it got up to 95 and im on stock rooted Rom and stock kernel.

Mine runs very warm when its been on data traffic for a while particularly near the bottom third of the phone. I had the blue s3 before this one (now have a white s3) that ran even warmer - I would say hot

Yeah definitely that bottom third runs the hottest and I have the blue without a case so I'm scared that when I get a case it'll run too hot.

If that's Fahrenheit 90-95 your talking about (30-35 Celsius) your OK depending on ambient temperature. Mostly everyone quotes Celsius, thats why I ask. Ninety degrees Celsius you're in trouble that's way to high.

My Droid 3 used to run at over 100 degrees fahrenheit... topped out at 114 once. I had to replace it... too hot in my pocket, lol.
I just turned off power saver and was doing browsing and such and I got to 40 Celcius is that something I should worry about?
Yeah I can't get it passed 40 in my house which is pretty cool but still I live in very hot climate so in scared if I take this thing outside where the air is about 39 C and with a big case on it, that it will overheat.

OK at the moment I am in an air conditioned room. Droid X2 26 °C (78.8 °F) ,Droid Bionic 21 °C (69.8 °F), the Droid X2 has a case cover both have data off ,Droid Bionic is bare naked hence the difference in temp's.
Both are sitting relatively idle. Now say I turn on data start surfing the net, downloading, playing a game etc. temps don't go much above 40 °C (104°F). If ambient temperature is higher such as living in hotter climate, no air conditioning, or outside YMMV.
These phone's will turn themselves off if temps get to high. I believe your temps sound normal.

If I do heavy tasks it heats to 41 °C... My ambient temperature is about 26 °C, which is quite high. I think 40 °C under load is normal.

Phenomenal kernel helped my temps out quite a bit during heavy gaming. Battery is much improved as well, doesn't hurt to give it a try!

Are you on stock kernel and ROM?....and mine for some reason isn't getting hot as easy now. Maybe something was running in background? Hope so

Some phones do run hotter than others.
Had a blue 16gb for a while and not once did I feel it get warm in my hand. Not long ago sold the 16gb one and got a 32gb and instantly noticed it got warm in my hands. Not hot but enough to take notice. In the 40's. And it's winter here.
Still, I don't worry about it too much. My S2 also got pretty warm and at some stages got over 50 degrees celcius. Still, it never let me down.

I've noticed my T999 rooted stock seems a little hot recently even though it wasn't doing much. I don't want it to be warm because it's distracting. It feels warm in my pocket, and when I grab it it feels warm (the bottom third). Each time it bothers me, because I know that heat is wasted battery.
If I was playing a 3D game or watching a streaming HD video, then OK if it gets a little warm but not if it's just sitting idle. It's going to drive me nuts if I can't make it stop.
I wish there was a Widget that could simply instantly force the phone into a "deep sleep" state where it could still receive a phone call, but not actively do anything else.
The bottom third of my phone heats up a lot when playing games, doesn't matter what game, could be a game of cards, and it would heat up the same as say... Nova 3... or Asphalt 7...
Not sure why it does it, but it does do it sometimes when multi tasking, I am running Omega v30. But always happened since I changed it from original firmware.
Every time I play a game eg: amazing Alex, eternity warriors 2, etc..
The evo one heats up pretty good and fast. I've played these 2 games with the phone off the charger. On the charger, even with just you tubing and Facebook the phone also gets pretty warm. You guys have the same thing happen to you guys too or am i alone?
I consider myself a power user.

Running an intensive game will cause your CPU and GPU to run to their fullest, which will generate heat rather quickly. Kind of like if you were to watch a movie or play a game on a laptop.
Also...Keep in mind how thin this phone is... heat goes through it pretty quick.

Since the 4.1.1 update on my s3 i have been having problems with playing and just simply using my s3 while playing games it usually geta really hot at the back bottom and kinda worries me so i stop playing and kill tasks etc clear ram and eventually it helps, the thing is before the update im sure this didnt happen.

It's normal since the glass and back are really thin (its usually at the bottom of phone), mine does the same if you use it a lot and have the screen kept on
Nothing to worry about.
I would check your battety stats though and look for something called media, this scans your media making your s3 bit hot.

Hi i would like to share my exp. Before . After flashing jb for europe and poland my phone have unusual heat at the back.and the camera becomes fluffy.. I was worried i tot it was the jb for my s3 made in france... After i saw jb region: france ... I flash it was the right jb for my phone....

You're right. When looking at tje screen its the bottom right in the back of the phone. I would assume it to be due to project butter amd a forced constant fps

It's the CPU that's heating up, that's near the bottom of the phone, unless the temp is in the 70s (celcius) there is nothing to worry about. The CPU will automatically throttle itself if it gets too hot (can't remember the exact value on the Exynos 4400, someone will though)
If you overclock it will heat up more, demanding activities like playing games etc will heat it up more.
If you are really concerned you can download System Tuner, then in there go to settings, and choose notification packages, then you can download the temperature package, and enable it, this will show live updates showing the temperature of the CPU in the notification bar. System Tuner can be used as root to overclock etc, but to show information like frequency and temperature it does not require root.
If. Downgraded the phone and stopped it what would be the disadvantages performance wise?

My S III gets REALLY hot when playing Asphalt 7, to the point of getting artifacts in the screen and eventually crashing the device.
I really don't care much about it. It is under warranty, so if I get any damage from that I'll harass Samsung so much they'll have to give me a new one.
When my phone was on ICS i never felt it getting warm while browsing the web, checking emails and changing system settings. Since upgraded to JB, I've noticed the phone was getting warm at the bottom (near the charging connector) 10 minutes after performing the above activities. The heat was definitely generated by the CPU, not the battery.
I used an app called Temp+CPU V2 from the Play Store to check CPU temperature. When the phone is on idle it hovers at around 25 degrees; after 10 minutes of use it goes up to around 35-38 degrees. By this point i can feel the bottom part of the phone was getting quite warm.
Can you guys test this and confirm whether your phones are behaving similar to mine?

Does for me, having it on uses less cpu making my s3 less hot but having it off can notice a big difference especially playing games and using internet.
My s3 just suffers from warmness now.

I was thinking ****ing it just downgrade it in the interest of the phones safety etc lol and wait till they release an update for project butter or jb etc etc... to finally sort this dam problem it it's probably nothing big but it does cause worries I always ha've mine on power save but it stays the same heat with games etc

You got a quadcore device in your hands. And it has no cooling whatsoever. So there's no wonder it gets hot when used. Especially playing games or similar stuff.

Samsung i747heat problems
first of all, sorry for my bad english. i just recently bought a samsung s3 i747, from amazon. since i have the phone, it gets really hot... even when im not using it. the normal cpu temp is 43* celcius.. and when is charging it cant be at 55 degrees... i cant returen the prhone to the seller because im in Venezuela and is a problem to send it. anyone could help me? what should i do?
