Just got my livedock :) - Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo, Pro

Well, I ordered my livedock off eBay on Sunday and it arrived this morning, I'm happy to report they do just what they said it would.. I can now charge my neo at the same time as using usb devices! HDMI out to the tv, usb Wifi mouse/keyboard combo and usb thumb drive all at the same time. (with usb hub attached)
The neo sits in the dock very nicely, and is at a nice viewing angle.
As an extra unexpected bonus it also enables landscape mode on the home screen when it's plugged in.. I hadn't worked out how to do that on stock home launcher yet. So navigating with mouse is really easy, doing that with OTG cable was a pain because it wouldn't switch to landscape.. (probably a build.prop edit that enables landscape mode but havn't played with that yet)
Well worth the 29 euro for the livedock

Cool Congrats

I think it's pretty expensive. It's €35 here. If I use wifikeyboard using my laptop and connect the phone with hdmi to my tv, I have basically the same.

Yea, I even considered getting a BT keyboard but with Android total lack of BT support I thought this was a cheaper option.
at least I can connect thumb drives too and still charge.. than again, Wifi could solve that issue too.. meh... I like the dock and very happy with the way it just works. (now just have to find myself a cheap USB gamepad to try)

I want one......lol

awesome, been itching to order mine, you mentioned thumbdrive in the first post ?
does that work on stock firmware?

So, IIRC, the livedock supported HDMI through USB, so that phones without HDMI-out, such as Ray, could be used. Is this true? Can you connect your tv with HDMI from the livedock itself, or do you have to use the HDMI-out on the phone?
Thanks!
Sent from my MT15i using XDA App

No hdmi support on livedock.. You have to plug a hdmi cable into the hdmi port on the phone..
USB thumb drives work with stock firmware but you have to install arc usb storage manager from market to enable thumb drive support on the neo.
And @ HilfordJames.. You'll get yours end of Feb when I get back to nz

Thanks for posting the pics. I really love this gadget. I am looking forward to get one.

Are you using actively powered USB hub in connection with livedock? Are you tryied to open it and look inside? I am just curious if the USB on livedock is powered only from the phone so it is really the same as USB OTG cable connected directly to phone, or there is some circuit to power it from charger if available.
I am considering to buy this gadget also, but i hope somebody add support of Bluetooth HID to the stock rom sooner, so i will not need live dock as i already have bluetooth keyboard and mouse.. Tryied to install CM7.1 because of that, but then I quickly return to the stock rom, on CM even HDMI didn't work.
Also let us know which games you will find easy to control via connected gamepad.

Havn't got my gamepad yet so can't comment on that.. Using unpowered usb hub works fine but havn't tried a powered one yet.. I'm sure it will work though.
As far as supplying power from dock for OTG, I can confirm this works, I can use the OTG usb port on the dock to charge other devices while the phone is unplugged from the dock, so power is being supplied straight to the OTG port from the live docks power supply
I've pulled the dock apart and will try to get a photo of the intricate circuit board in there, it's more than just a few cables.. And looks like an empty area for another plug or lead to solder onto.. Will try to work out what this is for too

here is a picture of the board inside the livedock..
looking at the board the micro USB only supplies power so if you power the dock off a computer (Through the docks micro usb port) it won't connect the phone to the computer for file sharing etc only charging.. not really that important but still good to know.
I attacked it with an old multimeter but its pretty primative.. I'll have to wait till I get back to NZ next month and my own test tools to figure out what the empty J12 connector is for.. (might just be a leftover test port) but if its possible to add extra usb ports it would save using a hub.. we'll see anyway.. enjoy the pic..
Kiwi

Dayme~! we're waiting like forever to see it coming to Malaysia

If this has landscape homescreen, we should be able to enable it in someway without the dock? Any developer who could figure out how to do that?
And if you make a call, is the "in call" screen also in landscape mode?

[Q] Mounting USB Thumb drive/HD??

I know people have had success with plugging HID devices, keyboards etc into the USB port of some android phones (just by hacking a cable)
anyone know if the hardware might support USB Hosting with a kernal Mod?
Would be nice to carry my entire movie collection on a USB drive and watch movies through the HDMI port of the phone in Hotels etc...
o.k.. I'm a dreamer.. but... I have been amazed at what the Devs on XDA are capable of. You guys all rock! (I have learnt so much from you all!)

o.k.. I found this, I wonder if its possible to get it working on the Neo..
micro USB to Host adaptor (Samsung)
That would be awesome. I would love that idea but if the USB drive would be using the battery u could not charge. Unless u had like a hub connected or something and even then hmm good idea though

ithink this should work as i know that it will work with the SE live dock
awesome stuff
It works with the new Samsung Galaxy S2, you just buy a cheap micro USB OTG Host cable (about $2 from Hong Kong) and you can plug in Mice, Keyboards and thumb drives!! I still don't know if this is just drivers or a hardware requirement on the Board to support USB Host.. (I don't have a Galaxy S2 but I ordered the cable to play with anway) who knows.. perhaps I will have a phone that supports that one day

[Q] would this keyboard work?

I've got my TP running CM9 alpha 2. I've always considered getting a keyboard for the TP to take notes in class.
Just saw one of these mini keywords at work:
http://m.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4522373&CatId=142
I know its USB but would it be possible to use a USB to micro USB adapter and get the necessary drivers loaded onto the pad to use it?
Idk of any Bluetooth keyboards as small as the one I linked but if there are, are there any that will work with the TP?
Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks
You would need a powered USB hub to get it to work. I have the bt kb from HP and its awesome. I think it's cheaper too.
Check this out.
I just ran through that myself with great success.

The main thing I liked about the one i linked was how small it was. It would be super light and easy to throw in my backpack.

Thanks! Rev you're the man haha!
Do you by chance have a link to the "on the go" charger that you were using?
Since ill mainly be using this on the go for class, or maybe on the train to work, a "wireless" setup would benefit me much more.
Thanks again!

Sounds like we've got different priorities. The HP bt kb is pretty small, butb big enough to type on. It's the same size as my 15" laptop kb, so I can still touch type. Smaller than that, and it gets difficult to bang out anything more than a sentence or 2 IMO. Mine would easily fit in a backpack. It's only about a quarter inch thick, except where the batteries go...there it's almost an inch. And the LxW is about 14X4.5 or 5 maybe. I don't have a measuring tape or ruler here.
Gotcha.
Ya im just looking for something down and dirty so to speak haha. Idk if I want to pay $40 for the one i listed, so ill keep my eyes open and keep the HP one in mind as well

Sweet, great video and love that you put links with Amazon Prime eligible stuff which I just ordered. Does the Touchpad charge with this method if there is enough current on the 5v line?
I have a Logitech USB gaming controller, I'll have to see if CM9 recognizes it (I believe its HID) and see if I can map its keys in an emulator. Also I imagine one could buy or make a portable USB power supply so this thing is mobile. When near and outlet the OEM HP charger would supply plenty of current (2A) for multiple USB devices. Its regulated so it will put out 5v even at low loads. Keyboards and mice are rated at only 100mA. I don't see why you couldn't hook both a keyboard and mouse into an unpowered USB hub if you are using the HP charger as your main source of USB power for the OTG adapter.

Unfortunately, it does NOT charge off of this. I really wish it did.
Got my two cables in the mail today.
It works great with keyboards and mice, unfortunately it doesn't recognize my Logitech USB gaming controller. I tried a powered USB hub instead of the Y cable and all it did was charge the TP using the USB hub's power and no USB devices worked.
I then tried using a non-powered HUB connected on the Y cable using the HP charger as a power supply. It allowed me to use a keyboard and mouse simultaneously. So if you want to use more than 1 device get a non powered USB hub. Just make sure your power supply has enough current for all the USB devices. USB keyboards and mice only draw 0.1A so the 2A HP charger is plenty.
Why is nobody selling a unit with all of this built in? A little box with a rechargeable battery built in, an output for OTG microUSB and a few input USB ports.

[Q] MHL cable and OTG cable

If you connect the MHL cable to the device and the OTG cable to the MHL cable the device can't detect the OTG cable.
How can I make this work? I've seen videos in youtube that they connect their device to the TV at the same they have USB bluetooth mouse and keyboard connected.
Anyone tried using MHL cable and OTG cable at the same time?

According to some of wikipedia entries it should be possible to use mhl and usb otg at the same time with a 11-pin mhl-hdmi adapter.
Wikipedia said:
11-pin MHL-USB Connector
The Samsung Galaxy S III uses a connector that is similar to the original 5-pin MHL-USB connector, but it uses 11-pins in order to achieve a few functional improvements over the 5-pin design.
It supports the use of USB and MHL simultaneously (note that the new Samsung 11-pin MHL-HDMI adapter also has a USB-OTG port).
Samsung’s Galaxy S III can power the MHL-HDMI adapter. Although this can theoretically also be done with the standard 5-pin micro-USB connector, the Galaxy S III's 11-pin connector is believed to be the first smartphone that supports this functionality.

I also got one of these 11-pin connectors and like it seems only the S3 has these adapters, so why the **** doesnt it work?? :/
I already asked sammy on facebook, just wondering what they will answer^^
Hopefully we will have some pos. results, dude.

How would that work since the micro USB connection on the mhl cable is for power / charger?
In those YouTube videos is it possible that they have the mhl cable connected to the TV and power source, and the keyboard and mouse connected wirelessly via Bluetooth?
Confused because you said USB Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. From what I know they aren't USB.

Samsung should eventually release a dock to use both so unless someone figures it out first you'll just have to wait, because if it just took an 11 pin USB cable someone would have got it working already and we'd know about it, so I reckon it might have some extra circuitry to make it recognised by the phone.
Guys, as I already posted, the connector has 11 pins, so it should be possible to use OTG and MHL features at the same time. thats the only reason sammy brought out this connector and also cause of incompability with the 5-pin connector.
So they should bring the f*ck out somethin for the phone that activates this feature.
And a big problem I have with my mhl-connector is that I cant configure the output
on my 2 TVs at home I get 1080i, (both only 1080i capable), but the picture is kinda oversized so I cant see 100% percent of the picture, only 90% or smt like this.
But the funny part is, that I get on my 1680x1050p PC monitor only 576p screen, what actually sucks So it would be awesome if I could choose the resolution I want to have. But I guess its a thing of the connector (maybe it choose the resolutions iself).
cheers
so the one in the videos using keyboard and mouse are bluetooth thru phone?

To use the MHL cable you must have power connected to the adapter.

That's damn funny because I have wanted to know whether that would work as well, lol.
Did seriously consider trying but as I was on holiday if they broke, I wouldn't be able to get replacement so didn't try it.
In theory I would think it could work, but only if you could somehow wire in power to the hdmi adapter as it appears to need that to run the hdmi aswell as provide power to the phone, at least enough that once the usb adapter tries to demand power to run it isn't enough for the phone to output.
As to whether this is just a a stupid guess and assumption of how the devices and being a noob, I don't know.
If you can get a micro female to male adapter with a usb splitter for power then technically I can't see why it wouldn't work if the limitations are physical as oppose to software based (whole other issue I have no clue about).
EDIT: Wow, when I started that post no one had replied, err, seems a little redundant now, lol. My bad. Also, this 5 minute wait to point this out, have seemed really long...
guess we'll have to wait for that dock.

No touchscreen. Would like to run only in dock mode.

Hello,
My Atrix 4G has has no touchscreen. I don't feel like buying a new digitizer and replacing it. I would like to use my Atrix as a media center only connected to my TV. Is it possible for me to set it up to run without a digitizer/touchscreen and only use with my TV and a wireless mouse/keyboard?
Thanks

Yes, it's possible. Just plug the cellphone and the keyboard / mouse to the dock (in case they work via USB dongle / not bluetooth) and it's set to work the way you want.

Unfortunately, that's not possible. The usual microUSB / female USB cables, as used with a lot of other smartphones, doesn't work with the atrix, our phone needs an external power outlet to be able to work with USB devices. You can either use the multimedia Dock or a 'custom' cable, I saw some time ago in youtube a tutorial teaching how to make a custom one, or maybe you can find it in ebay (not sure, never looked for it, to be sincere).

the cable you are talking about is called udb otg ( on the go), switch the phone's usb port into host mode.. only drawback is that atrix can't supply power to the usb, you must use an external power source for the devicr attached

I managed to use my atrix with the lapdock for around a month while I sourced a new digitizer and it worked great. I would recommend that you find a work and play kit second hand as I often use the webtop for watching on-demand tv and someone is working on a full resolution xbmc port that would work great with the remote. You might also be able to use the usb host ports to mount a fat32 hd as a media drive. The atrix can work really well without its digitizer.

I too am interested in this as I have an Atrix 4G with a broken screen. I was thinking about buying a device like the Roku or the MK802. I guess I could just get the Motorola Entertainment Center from Amazon.
Is there a ROM that would be best for the purpose of using the Atrix as a TV only device.
I posted a tutorial in general for using hdmi and tablet mode with the backlight for the digitizer off. This might give you ideas for using the hdmi port with or without your favorite hdmi enabled Moto dock.

Laptop dock?

Are there any kind of laptop docks available that would work with it, such as the Motorola's extinct Atrix lapdock, the fabled clambook or something similar on the market?

Not that I know of, but if you were looking for a home solution (as opposed to travel), I've really enjoyed a Bluetooth Keyboard and Mouse, with an MHL cable into a 23" screen.
Still working on what's the best software to make the most of this (the new Open Office for Android will come in use). And sorry I know I'm not really answering your question.
I'm confident that with the right set of connectors and adapters you could make an atrix lapdock work. It would be kludgy but it would work.

I was just asking a friend about the Atrix Lapdock. I have one sitting here and a friend suggested something that may work.
Im not saying this WILL work since i dont know if the keyboard and trackpad are powered via the usb connecter or are powered by the internal battery, but if its the latter, you might be able to get a female micro usb to usb female adapter and connect a Bluetooth dongle to it and then use an MHL thing to connect to the micro hdmi connector.
I don't currently have any easy means to try this myself and i don't have the patience to find the adapter(s?) to give it a shot. Running on fairly limited funds right now.
