[Q] Only able to get to download screen - Not showing in Odin or Kies - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've searched everywhere and can't find an answer to my problem.
GT-I9100 (Sprint)
I hate to admit I am somewhat of a noob. But pretty good at following instructions. I tried to install ics using Odin.
PDA –—> I9100_CODE_I9100XXKPA_CL51925_REV02_user_low_ship.tar.md5
Phone –—> MODEM_I9100XXKPA_REV_02_CL1094591.tar.md5
CSC –—> GT-I9100-MULTI-CSC-OXAKPA.tar.md5
The first instructions I read din't say to do the pit file. So I didn't. I have read later that I should have. The process failed. And when I restarted the phone I can only get to the download screen. When I try to get to recovery I get "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." I also get the same message if I simply plug the usb into the phone while off, before any buttons are pushed.
Neither Kies or Odin recognize the phone anymore. I've tried different USB ports, a different computer. And I've hooked up a friends AT & T Galaxy S2 and it's recognized fine. Neither computer I've used even makes the beep when you hook up the phone.
The short is since it connected before the flash, and the other phone is showing I'm confident it's not PC related. But not being able to get anywhere besides the download screen has my hands tied to do anything else.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! And I have searched all over and can only find similar problems that turn out to be PC related.

Firstly... Being from Sprint... Are you 100% SURE that you have the GT-I9100? What does your device look like? Does it have a middle "hard button" at the bottom?

Product Name
It shows:
PRODUCT NAME: GT-I9100
at the top of the download screen. There are the four buttons across the bottom. Not what I call physical buttons, because they don't move. I guess they would be called soft buttons below the screen.

You don't have an I9100 and are in the wrong forums.

Do you know what I have then?

Probably http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1281
But you might want to check under your battery before blindly flashing stuff for the wrong device.

open odin look that kies process is not runing on the background.
Try to boot your phone the message from firmware upgrade failed will come on the screen, when you're on this screen plug yor phone it will be recognized on odin, then leave it plugged in and shutdown the phone and get on download mode it will be recognized
last flash stock firmware complete i always use the XXKI3 with pit file, all of this if u phone is gt i9100
this was what i did, have the same problem in a bad flash of stock GB firmware (2 days ago) same screen and same problem, doing that (read it on a post somewhere) helped me

I was wrong. Its not the i9100. Its the galaxy s2 epic touch. Yeah.... Im kicking myself now. I did try what you said and it didnt work. I posted in the correct thread and was told im bricked.

aw that sucks! i guess you have to buy an usb jig now! Dont worry, its cheap and very usefull it also resets your flash counter

Can you point me in the direction of where to get a USB jig?

Just figured out what the USB jig does. Wont work for me. I cant take the phone back. I cancelled my plan with sprint. I use this phone as a second device. I may have to do JTag... But its going to be $50.

[Q] Galaxy SII almost bricked please help.

I have a problem with Galaxy s2. Basically it started to drain my battery like hell.
It gets empty in about 10 hours.
Now when I want to flash the phone once again in order to get everything back as it was when I bought it I cannot. This is due to MTP connection activating itself as soon as I turn on the phone. And I cannot enable usb debugging due to that as it says that I have to remove the USB cable.
In addition my phone charges itself really fast about 2 hours. And when I try to power it on without charger plugged in it gives me charging image and yellow triangle with ! in it and thermometer aside flickering. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix my phone?
Have you tried using CWM to wipe all data + clear all cache, then do a fresh re-install?
Yes I tried it now. It still says my USB is connected when its not. And now it doesnt unlock my sim card.
Factory reset that dont work return phone to a service centre ..

Well thats the case I have voided warranty already. Wondering if there are any chances I could put old rom back before returning it?
Make a DIY USB JIG then flash it back to stock rom and have it checked.

Not sure what do you mean by DIY USB JIG but I cannot flash it because I cannot switch USB debugging on... Thats the case it shows me that USB is always connected when it isnt and when USB is connected it doesnt let to switch on USB debugging.
Route is source stock rom and Odin load stock rom into Odin enter download mode on phone and then connect cable and flash rom .
No download mode

Thank you all who have replied. I have now managed to get over the USB issue somehow but still something is wrong either with battery sensor or battery. When I power off my phone it switches on automatically and shows the thermometer and battery charge icon. Anyone else have had this problem? It also charges up to 95% and it bursts to 100% very quickly.
EDIT: Now I tried my friends battery and I did not get the flickering temp error and my friend didnt get it with my battery as well. So something now I'm totally out of ideas.

I am having the same issues here, wonder if the topic creator resolved this in any way? I am thinking of getting a new battery?
Just FYI wear a condom or something on your galaxy S II. As it turns out from service my phone supposedly has liquid damage which does not the warranty apply. I have to pay 240 euros in order to get it fixed :S
Hey Guys.
I had an S1 7 months prior to buying the S2, and have upgraded/fresh installed ROMS many many times over the past year. Once the S1 bricked during an upgrade and I was able to get it into Download Mode without using a micro-USB jig from instructions on this website. If my memory serves me correctly, it was a procedure something fairly simple like hold the Home, Volume Up and Power buttons continuously until the phone goes into forced Download Mode.
However, this procedure doesn't work with the S2 or I'm remembering it incorrectly, and I'm unable to find that instruction webpage again. Now my S2 is almost bricked showing a message I've not seen before, "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again."
So far, I cannot get past this message and Kies 2.0.2.11071_128 doesn't recognize the device nor that emergency recovery is needed.
Unfortunately Samsung programmers haven't been quite smart enough or forward thinking enough to make Kies work from behind a proxy which requires authentication (I live and work on a university campus and the only way to the internet is via proxy and authentication) and it has never shown in the past 9 months of usage that it needs to update itself nor finds any official ROM releases. Therefore I've been forced to use Odin and ROMs from here or samfirmware.com for my updates. Until now, there has never been any major problems that I couldn't get around.
Do any of you have instructions on how I can get my S2 into download mode so as to get Odin to recognize the device? It is not possible for me to make my own JIG here in Thailand as there is nowhere for me to go purchase electronic equipment and parts such as soldering irons and resistors. I am a computer engineer and could easily build such if it were possible to get needed parts.
Thanks hugely in advance for any help offered.
Just order a high from ebay

Well kiss my rosy red butt-cheeks! Speaking from personal experience as tech support, I know empirically to replicate something 52 times prior to asking for assistance. This instance shouldn't have been an exception!
Directly after posting this request for assistance, I decided to try Odin once again and DANGED if this time it found my device even with the "Firmware encountered" error showing. Odin stopped around 90% and forced me to reset my S2, but this time it went right into Download mode with nary a fuss. Now Odin just successfully installed KG6.
So if there is anything to be learned from this experience, either by other users with similar issues or myself, it is "if at 1st you don't succeed, try again and again and again and again."

SGS2 stuck in orange triangle

Help!! My SGS2 is stuck on a screen with an orange triangle and excmamation mark between a cellphone and computer after a ROM flash attempt!
I can go to Downloading mode and Odin can detect my smartphone but i don't know what else to do...
Flash a full (different to whatever you were trying) ROM, problem solved.

yep, that's just a soft brick.
since you can access DL mode, just reflash with odin and normally problem solved
Haaa, thx all i fixed it! ^^
It took me 5 hours to find out what i had to do and find the stock Firmware tho...
But all fine now
Hello,
I've got the same problem but it seems I can't go into download mode. What am I doing wrong? What else can I try?
My SGS2 is not rooted and was on Android 2.3.3. Kies told me there was an update available to android 2.3.4 so I went for it.
But I'm really disappointed, now my phone is completety stuck on this screen with the phone...orange triangle with exclamation mark (warning)...PC.
EDIT : Samsung Kies proposes to do an emergency recovery, but in the end it also fails.
Fortunately, I took a screenshot before upgrading. See attachment.
Please help me.
kind regards,
Andrew

If your phone is not rooted, you still have your warranty, bring it back to the shop and ask for a new one
I bought it an amazon. But I'd prefer to have a solution right now instead of having to complain.
I continued my quest on the net... Apparently, a usb jig might take me out of this screen and back to the download mode. Can somebody confirm this?

One minus Did you follow the Kies recovery instructions .
One turn off and remove battery for a short period .
Two turn on
Three try recovery mode
Four try download mode ..
Five yes USB jig may enable you to get to download mode and from that you can flash a stock Samsung rom .
Six service centre

Thanks JJEgan. I'll try once more and let you know. Assuming that I am able to get in download mode, why should I use a stock kernel and not the normal firmware I had before? Sorry about my question, but this is all new for me.
A USB Jig should be standard equipment for anybody who flashes their Galaxy phone, IMO.

Download Odin, download stock ROM, use Windows Task Manager to kill any Kies-related processes. Then turn off the phone, turn it back on in download mode and flash using Odin. Do not tick repartition and do not use the PIT file if the stock ROM comes with one.
Hi,
Thanks to this forum I managed to bring my SGS2 alive again step by step after that Kies broke it during the android upgrade from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4... Moreover, I am in the official 2.3.4 version now without using Kies!! ;-) Here's my story:
In the end, I was able leave the screen with the "phone..orange warning triangle..computer". and I was able to go in download mode without a usb jig. You have to press the 3 keys (volume down, home, and power on) quite a few seconds without releasing them. And then the download warning menu appears, press volume up to confirm that you want go go in download mode. And I was in "download mode'. Anyway, I will buy a jig ;-)
I tried once more the emergency recovery with samsung Kies without success. Failed.
Then with Odin I had problem. It was stuck at step "setup connection". Kies was not running and was not visible in the system tray. Though in the task manager, I still had 2 Kies* processes. Kiestrayagent.exe and another one starting with Kies and 4 letters (sorry I didn't write it down). I killed both processes. One step further... Then Odin was stuck on step complete(write) operation failed. Never found why. I tried several times, battery in and out again, without success. This was on a Win7 32bit. Latest Kies version.
In the end I installed Odin on another PC Win7 64bits. I had to install Kies also on it otherwise Win7 says "no driver found" when you plug in the usb cable of the SGS2. And on this computer, flashing with Odin worked perfectly.
Thanks again to all people who helped me + also thanks to this super forum where I could find the official firmware I needed after that Kies broke down my phone.

I use heimdall personally. Never had any problems with it. Do you have all the sgs2 drivers installed?
Also check md5 sums to make sure your download is ok.

I'll try heimdall. Drivers should be fine as kies is installed. Rom should be good as I've tried 2 different download sources
Make sure you install the libusb drivers for heimdall before flashing. The instructions are in the heimdall readme. Good luck

Just wanted to post that my problem is solved.
Summary: My AT&T Galaxy SII showed an error on boot (software upgrade failed. connect to kies...). Kies wouldn't even recognize the device so that route was a no go. So as everyone's recommended method of last resort, I decided to flash the device back to stock via odin. I entered download mode (volume up + volume down and plug in usb) and Odin would recognize the device, I would load the stock rom in the PDA slot and hit start and it would begin normally, but it would always fail after a few seconds on 'NAND write start', or 'factoryfs.img'. So I got a 1 click download solution using odin for reverting my phone back to stock. Same thing, it would recognize the phone, but stall out and fail. I also tried flashing clockworkmod via odin but and same problem. People recommended I try heimdall. It would recognize my device, and then fail after 'kernel 100%'.
I tried both programs on 3 different computers, and must have tried 12 different USB slots amongst all of them. I'm fairly handy with this stuff and I worked for hours on it.
xtra info: I had successfully used odin on my computer to flash a kernel just a week ago so I know my stock usb cable was working etc...
Resolution: So I hung my head and drove to the ATT store. After pressing a few buttons on the device and not getting anywhere they sent me to a nearby Device Support Center. I told the girl at the counter that my phone booted to this error screen and that connecting it to Kies did nothing. She asked if it was ok that in the case that she couldn't fix it she would offer me a replacement. I said that was fine and after 10 minutes in the back room she came out with a replacement (free of charge).
Well that was the good news. For the bad news, unfortunately I still don't know how to fix the problem I had, and don't really know how to avoid it in the future. I thought phone's could only get truly bricked if you messed with PIT files and such. There didn't seem to be anything more I could do than flash with odin or heimdall as those were already last resorts. I know I had the right files, the right drivers, and working usb. No matter how crazy I got with my iphone, a full restore was only a click away by plugging in to iTunes. Somehow I messed up my phone so bad that even the device support center couldn't fix it....? Shouldn't have had to be like that.
Thank yous: Thanks to ATT for having a walk-in store and for so easily offering up a replacement. Thanks to the many people on the web who offered remedies.
tl;dr - phone broke, att replaced, still a mystery

[Q] Please help me!

I have a GT-I9100M that is refusing to turn on. My computer cannot even tell when the phone is plugged into it.
I was following the guide located at
dropbox.com/s/6oiqm8909pwg6qt/For%20i9100G%20users%20only.pdf
to try to update my phone. I was using the Odin method with the 2 files linked under "using odin" on the first page of the guide.
Odin said something to the effect of "FAIL". I tried again, but ODIN got stuck, so after a while I unplugged my phone from the computer.
Now I cannot get a response from the phone at all. I have tried pressing power, holding vol.down+home+power, removing the battery. Even when I connect the phone to my computer, I get no response (My computer doesn't even recognize that the phone is plugged in).
Are there any steps that can be taken? Should I contact Samsung? I read something about a USB JIG... would one of those help? Is this a "hard brick"?
I am in Waterloo, Canada (it's near Toronto). If there are no other options, can anyone recommend a trusted repair service?
Thank you in advance and sorry if I am replicating an already existing thread! I searched and searched, but tbh I'm pretty worked up atm, so I may have missed it.
EDIT: On closer inspection, it seems the file I tried to upgrade with was for I9100G, whereas I have I9100M. I'm guessing this is the source of the problem?

Yes that was the source of the problem ...
Do you see phone connected in ODIN.. That is COM section turning Yellow ???
No, Odin can't see the phone
Bottom line is, if you can't get into download mode (vol down/home/power), your next best (very faint) chance is a jig. If that fails, you'll need to have a JTAG repair done, or return it to your telco/Samsung for repair.
The JTAG repair may well turn out to be the cheaper option given there's a pretty good chance Samsung will charge you to repair it, as using non-stock firmware on the phone voids your warranty.

Hi
If odin can not see your phone means you are not in download mode.
also you can use "Download Mode JIG" to put your phone in download mode if its not bricked. you can buy online.
Also you can make it @ home if you know about how to.

Okay, thank you for sharing your expertise!
Would anyone happen to know if this site mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-galaxy-s-ii-jtag-brick-repair/

Also, any tips for approaching Samsung? I'd like to be honest with them, of course, but if there's a chance that they won't be able to tell what I've done, I might just say "it when dark when I tried to update it".
I'm with Rogers, but I bought the phone off Kijiji. I doubt they would help me...

Listen if the phone is still under warranty you can try approaching the samaung service centre and tell them that the phone suddenly switched off while using and then refused to switch on..
Since the phone cant be booted even to the download mode, they wont be able to check the binary counter so..
They might fix it for you or maybe if you are lucky they may get you a replacement!
I had a similar problem and they fixed it for me..

[Q] Odin fail!! need help!!! >< samsung s2 i9100G

i was trying to flash ICS 4.0 firmware to my samsung s2 I9100G Malaysia just now... but failed..
then i try to unplugged it from my computer and pulling my battery out from my phone..
when i try to reboot my phone it shows up a black screen with a phone connecting to a computer with a yellow triangle warning sign between...
how can i quit this mode!! omg!!!
Hi there
Check your usb connections please, one of the most common and unmentioned problems with ODIN is that it doesnt like being connected through hubs or non usb2 ports, i failed with odin quite a few times, until i disconnected my phone from the usb hub and connected it directly to the pc usb2 port, everything was fine after that.
Odin doesnt usually fail, what files are you flashing, is the firmware a 1 file package or multiple files with a .pit file??
If its 1 file, make sure you untick repartition.
Odin is solid, i would ask you to go away and check all the above, use odin 1.83 which is the best version i found, then try again, also check your lead, sometimes cheap usb leads are designed for charging and not syncing.
Good luck
---------- Post added at 12:47 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:45 PM ----------
also the black screen mode is because the flash failed, you need to re enter download mode, and reflash until you get a pass, if it fails again, check md5 sums or download a generic s2 firmware and try again, its not bricked dont worry, as long as you do it right it will be fine.
thank for ur info.
anyway to get the hell out of the black scren??..
i connot re-enter the download mode... keep stuck in the black screen with a phone connecting to a computer with a yellow triangle warning sign!..
Can u get into clockworkmod recovery?
Press Home+volume up+ power key until you get to cwm recovery.
And yes you probably connected your phone through a hub or usb1 port.
If nothing else works you'll need a jig to restart into download mode. Try and look for the jig thread on general sgs2 forum for free locations.
That's forced download mode I.E. it's forcing you to flash something. Get a stock rom from Samfirmware or Checkfus & flash it with Odin.
Absolutley these guys are right, even if your flash has failed you should still be able to enter download mode, are you sure you cant, VOLUME DOWN, MIDDLE BUTTON AND POWER BUTTON, keep them all held down and it will boot to DL Mode, every time mine got a fail i still got to dl mode no problem.
Failing that yer, get a jig, usually they come from singapore, so if you cant wait that long pop to an electronics store, buy the resistors you need and a micro usb plug and make one, i made one yesterday and it cost me £1.40 to make, although its a makeshift for emergencies, it will do until the one ive ordered arrives.
Keep trying dl mode, no reason to not get into it.

^This.
Also, OP, make sure you are flashing an I9100G firmware, and NOT an I9100 firmware. Likely that was the cause of your predicament in the first place, as that is the common cause of this screen being reached.
That sounds like a brick software, I get some like this time ago

tried to flash the phone from ODIN and failed, most probably he done it wrong. The only thing the phone does is displaying an icon in the middle of the screen with a phone and a PC and an exclamation point in between them. I can`t get it to enter in download mode (volume down+home+power) and I can`t start it eather. It just stays at that icon. Kies is not recognizing the phone although the drivers are installed. When I pluged the phone for the first time in the PC it automatically instaled 2 drivers and that was it. Is it bricked? I haven`t seen this before.
The phone is an SGS 2 model GT-I9100G, ssn I9100GGSMH.
I hav downloaded 2 official firmware, 2.3.6 and 4.0 .. all is Malaysia..
flash so many times and keep failing..

I have the same problem and if it was actually in download mode properly then why won't ODIN detect the device????????????????????
I am trying to get clockworkmod onto the device. And the phone does nothing else but show that screen no matter how many times I do button combos etc... Maybe you should stop ignoring the guy when he's saying IT ISN'T WORKING AFTER HE HAS TRIED THE STEPS THAT PEOPLE WHO "KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING" HAVE PROVIDED.

Depends on what you have already tried flashing since you originally got into this mess in the first place.
If you started blindly flashing stuff for any which device, it's possible you have borked your device to the point where your PC will no longer detect it.
Say, if you tried flashing a Fascinate ROM or similar to a Vibrant.
I'm just guessing that's what happened, because you started this thread in the Fascinate forum.
The Fascinate and the Vibrant are two completely different models of phones. The Fascinate is the Verizon variant of the Galaxy S, and is a CDMA phone. You have a Telus version of the Vibrant, which is a GSM phone.
So if you flashed something out of the Fascinate forum to your SGH-T959D Vibrant, you likely caused this issue yourself. And why are you in the I9100 forum trying to solve your problem?
Go to the Vibrant forum for your problem with your Vibrant phone.
Use Odin
