Whenever I try to copy an MKV file to my Prime, there is a loooooooong delay where nothing happens, then finally a screen pops up that says something like "this file might not play properly, are you sure you want to copy it?". When I hit "yes", it copies just fine.
Does anyone know of a way to keep this from happening? My MKV files play just fine with MX Video player, so it's a pain to have to deal with this annoying delay every single time.

Depends where that file type check is done. If it's in the USB driver, there is no way of getting rid of it other than hack the driver or use another one.
Do you use Asus software to copy the file or do you just use the prime as usb storage and copy it?
My Prime is on it's way to me, as soon as it's here I'll upgrade to ICS (rollout in Germany just began) and check on movie files.
Same on every Android device.
Got the question you get with everyone of my Android devices I have had. but I don't have that delay you mention.

This message is just a heads up that it might not work properly. And how can Android or Windows know if you have installed a program that can play those files?
Think the problem is more your computer than Prime. when it comes to send files its most time the computer that is the problem.

Problem is that the Prime connects as an MTP device. This in conjunction with the MTP/USB driver used could be the problem. Run "devmgmt.msc" from Win+R to get to the device manager and check if "Asus MTP device" is properly installed, if not, update the driver (if possible).
Question pops up instantaneously for me.
I think this is DRM related issue. It seems like the prime has no option (or purposely removed) to be mounted as Mass USB Storage. The only option available is to mount it as MTP or as a Camera.
I can copy small files in and out fine with MTP. However, I think it checks for file types and warn/deny certain ones that the prime should not be able to play, even though you have an app installed you know can play it. It's really annoying specially when copying multiple files and you come back to your computer to find out it stopped copying because of a stupid warning or question.
Whenever I copy large or small .mkv files, explorer.exe just tanks and quits. I think ICS or some DRM app is doing this on purpose for movie files. .avi files seems fine but gives a warning. But when all else fails, I can pull out the external sdcard and copy the files through a reader.
Is there a way to force it to mount as as a USB Mass Storage device like my other android device? Or was this option removed now from ICS as Google gets stricter with DRM related issues? I wonder if the Nexus can be mounted as a USB Mass Storage rather than MTP?
Any ideas guys?
PS. It's kind of silly that they brag you play HD movies and the screen can show them in HD, but you can't copy any HD formatted files either because of DRM restrictions or the sdcard format can only handle movies with 4gb or less (which is not HD quality anymore). The only thing its good for is to shoot your own HD videos with the camera and play that video in HD, which you can do with your phone better since it's smaller and easier to maneuver.
And they say the new T700 is coming out with 1080p, I say its useless unless they can mount the drives with ntfs or ext4 with faster read/write throughput to prevent lags.

Pfft, at least you can copy MKV files to your Prime directly . I had to transfer 13GB of files to a USB, transfer them to my netbook and then from the Netbook to my MicroSD card in an SD card adapter all because my MicroSD to USB adapter broke and I can't transfer directly to the Prime

That still doesn't explain why some files would transfer fine while others do not. Have you tried transferring a .mkv file (let say 2gb) and see if it works? It crashes for me. As for other file types, I get ask stupid questions.

It wasn't meant to explain that. It was only meant to explain why there is no USB Mass Storage.
I highly doubt it's a DRM problem because I'm able to copy .mkv files over. The only thing I have to do is confirm that I want to copy it, because it will complain that it might not be able to play that file type.

Android is smth like linux (FAT drive) you are UNALBE to TRANSFER ANY SINGLE FILE MORE THAN 2GB thru usb.
micro sd card is limit to 4 GB if i'm not wrong.
the BEST solution is network transfer with ES file explorer, itz good to invest on NAS aka network drive now, SCREW USB.

With regards to NAS. I already have NAS at home and the WD Live (3 of them) so I can watch movies in each room. Problem is, I want to watch movies on my tablet when I'm traveling long flights (starting to tire of carrying my laptop, tablet is so much lighter). At home, Its kind of useless to watch movies on my tablet when my TV is bigger and I have media players to play them. Lol, even my computer monitor is bigger
u can use network transfer to ur prime...not asking u to stream...
you wont have any problem with file size or type when using network transfer to your prime. since u have NAS make for use of it.
I've copied a few gigs of MKVs to my Prime (both internal storage and microsd) and had no problems. Windows 7 does tells me the little error message about how the thing might not play the format back properly (I wonder why that error shows up considering the Prime can at least playback H.264 with AAC audio in MKV using the native video player).
Did you disable Asys Sync on your tablet? I noticed once I disabled that, transfer speeds were a lot faster.
Ok finally worked. I reformatted the micro sdcard in FAT32 and ran read/write test on it to make sure it is not bad. Tried it again twice and it worked both times. Thanks guys. Really weird problem, something must have gotten corrupted. I have also tried wireless transfer and it work flawlessly. I think that will be my preferred method of transfer now.

How in the world do I manage to transfer. Mkv files to my tab? I can't do it, when I try to make it, windows stops working...however when I transer a .avi file it works perfectly.
Do I really need to convert the files. Mkv to. Avi ....thats a pain.....if yes any advice on a free converter?

There are other ways to transfer ALL types of files to your Tab, like doing it over wifi. Go to the Market and grab Websharing (not free) or WifileExplorer (free) or any other you want, and follow the directions. You basically type in the I.P address of your tab into a web browser and transfer files that way.
Now as for playing said mkv files, try Moboplayer or just convert them to mp4. I assume you have Windows, look for "Handbrake", it's free and solid, or look for "Freemake" also free.
My personal anecdote, Tegra 2 has been a disappointment multimedia-wise. I took my 10.1 Tab back to Bestbuy the other day and got a Verizon Tab 7" off craigslist new-in-box for $200, couldn't pass it up. The PowerVR SGX gpu in the Tab 7" paired with "Mvideoplayer" puts video playing on the Tab 10.1 to shame.
I'm staying clear of any Tegra 2 SOC device with Nvidia gpu. The PowerVR SGX is still taking prisoners it seems.
I just would like to share that I have been able to transfer an .mkv using the normal windows Mpd or w/e transfer. as we know transfering .avi work, no problem, but trying to copy a .mkv crashes explorer for some stupid reason.
I had an mkv that i couldnt transfer and while i am sure a wifi transfer would work as suggested, it would be slower than just usb.
what i did is, through windows, take out the file extension, so my file was originally called movie.mkv, now its just called movie. I tried renaming it to movie.avi, still crashed it. now once the file no longer has a file extension, windows lets u transfer it, no questions asked. once on the device, use a file manager(stock one doesnt let you rename file extensions) to add the .mkv once its on the device. I used androzip, but i am sure others work.
Hope this helps people trying to transfer files to tab, yet windows explorer just crashes.
If any one know any other file managers that let you rename the file extension, please let me know, i am not really fond of androzips UI

If the movie is too big to transfer just split the movie in half with (HJsplit 3.0) software and transfer it over to your tablet use WIFI File explorer pro to transfer
works flawlessly with Samsung tab 10.1.
Usually, MKV does not supported by Samsung Tab since they only can support H.263, H.264, MPEG4, WMV, DivX videos. So converting MKV to mp4 is necessary. I ised Brorsoft Video Converter to deal with my videos. It works great. Download and have a try.
I am having issues streaming movies wirelessly. I can connect to my TV using wifi and stream music, but when I try to do the same with the movies, I get an error message. Am I doing something wrong? I downloaded DivX movies, avi, and none work. What am I doing wrong?
You gotta give us some more details in order to help you out. What method are you using to try and stream movies? What does the error msg your getting say?

First going to a Gallery. Selecting a Video. After clicking on a menu, and it gives you 3 options Trim, Select player, and Play in 3D.
Don't remember the exact error since I'm not at home at the current moment, but it pretty much says that this type of a file is not supported.
Common issue is that the program may not support that specific file type... There are a lot of ways to end up with a .avi file, some work better then others...
Try a .mpg or .mpeg ... If those types play fine, Its the file, If they don't either... Hard Reset. (most likely a jacked up codec or damaged media player program on the phone)

No, the movie is 1.95 GB.
I just want to be able to stream it without converting anything, from my phone on to my TV. (I have a SONY LED 3D 55" TV)
I even tried my PS3, and that didn't work. Maybe there is an app that streams any format?
Make sure ur tv has DLNA, that's how its streams it. If ur tv doesn't have it then it won't work

The 2GB issue is not that the Evo doesn't like it, it is a limitation of FAT32.
Not really sure what other file systems the phone will read, but if it supports ext2/ext3/ext4 then you shouldn't have the file size limitation any more.
Then I would search the market for vid players that play all formats and try again. I believe arc media does

The 2GB limitation is currently a limitation of Android. FAT32 has a 4GB limitation.
There are bugs already posted about the 2GB limitation of Android.
I'm having another issue. A couple days ago I could see my pc under devices named daniel-pc. Click on that (I'm within the music app trying to simply stream music from my shared folder on my computer) and I was receiving an error message saying something to the effect of I do not have permission to access this... Please allow access and try again. I don't remember the exact wording and I will post about that when I can get to it.
For now I have a different issue. I am connected to my wifi, I go to the music app hit the top evo 3d thing or menu -> select player and it simply buffers for a min then does not find my damn pc for some reason. I did a factory reset, no dice, hooked up via cable, ditto. I Updated profile and prl. I Did absolutely nothing different to my computer or router settings. I Updated my router firmware after not working which also did not help.
Btw my xbox which is hooked up via ethernet finds and plays daniel-pc just fine. My computer is not wifi its using ethernet to get to the router. As I sed earlier I could see my pc when going to select player so that isn't the issue. Thanks ahead. First post sorry for the length.
have u tried the media share app on the phone if that didnt work try tversity for your computer instead of your phone.
Media share works fine. As soon as I turn it on htc media share pops up on the left side of wmp. I can pull up my media from my phone easily. I'm trying to do the opposite and play files from my pc on my phone using the select player option. You can find this also by opening a picture up pressing menu then select player. if your on wifi now your computer should show up. At least that's what it used to do

I've read a lot and it seems like a PITA, if at all possible. I'm on a MAC, so I can't just drag and drop.
The MAC Kies software is not taking the files, either straight to the tab or to the library.
I have the wi-fi option of file transer, but at 4-5 gigs a movie that would take forever.
What about loading from the NAS to a hard drive or SD card, then loading on to the tab? Still sounds pretty time consuming, but at the same time more favorable as I can load up hard drive with several movies then transfer one or two at a time.
Will the tab, with the right movie player, play these files assuming I can get them onto the tab?
Amazing how you can read tons of threads that only lead to more confusion then all of a sudden you find the mother load of information and it all makes sense.
I'm currently transferring a 7 GB MKV movie via wi-fi using Cyberduck and file expert. About a 1/2 hour process I estimate. This might be taking a bit longer since I'm pulling the 7gb movie from my NAS, but I am connected with CAT6 at 1gb/s so who knows.
I've downloaded Diceplayer and am also going to download Vplayer and test them both with high action movies.
All my movies are MKV for my NAS and wireless streaming to my home TVs purpose. All are 4-7 GB in size.
I don't have the USB host adapter yet. You think I can use an external hard drive or SD card and play the movies directly from that source without any issue?
You'll find that stuff encoded above about 5-6Mbps (more importantly, anything that peaks around 15Mbps) will stutter on playback during the high nitrate scenes with any player. This is unfortunately a result of the Tegra chip and can't be fixed. With that said, you're also going to have trouble with anything above 720p unless it's encoded using baseline profile or with a really high quantizer.
As far as file transfers are concerned, you can use any number of wireless solutions to get the job done, but wired ones are few and far between. You can transfer using DDMS if you have the Android SDK installed, but it's not very intuitive and kind of slow. I recompiled the library that the 'Android File Transfer' uses to include support for the Galaxy Tab, but Google has obviously made some modifications because the program doesn't like my compiled version.
I'm still trying to figure out how to get the Android File Transfer app working as I think that is the best long term solution to our problem.

Since heat is so ****ing long I'd imagine that 7GB is just about right in terms of size/quality ratio.
If your NAS is running an SMB server then you can use something like ES File Explorer on the tablet to connect directly to it and copy from there. I've found the transfer speeds to be acceptable and definitely less work than what you're putting up with right now.

I imagine it is, as that's probably how you access it from your Mac. Try ES File Explorer and see if that works for you.

The NAS shows up on my MAC as a drive over the WI FI network or in my case a cat6 cable.
I'll try the ES file if it will speed up the transfers..

A couple things I was wondering about.
Is this supposed to be faster than using FTP file explorer? I was getting 3.0 MB/second, not Mbs, MB.
I don't know what I'm getting using the ES file explorer because there is no status bar that tells me what I'm getting. I'm currently timing the 7 GB file using ES F. Explorer.
There is a little download icon in the task bar- it seems buggy to me. Have you experienced this?
Am I missing anything here?
At this point the only advantage I see using this method over FTP is I don't have to be next to my computer to get things started.

It's always worked really well on my phone, but I actually rarely use it with the tablet so I can't tell you much. I know that it's fast enough to stream movies (which it does well) but as to overall speed I can't help.
As far as progress, I've always had it show me a progress bar in the notification pane. Never had any problems with it.
If it doesn't work for you, then it's no skin off my back

I just sold my transformer and one of my largest issues was the tablet could not play h264 movies. They ran very slowly, some apps would play the movie with no sound, others would play the sound but both the video and sound were very slow. Anyways you look at it, the transfomer could not handle bluray quality h264 movies.

4Gb limitation is not entirely an Android limitation, it's a FAT32 limitation.
Nvidia's demo showed the Transformer Prime playing high profile 1080P video.
Yes Asus Prime will play your h264.
And it can handle 4GB + files

yes its a fat32 storage limitation.
if you want bigger files (eg a h264 mkv) it must be on your
internal storage (which is ext3/4 formatted) or you have to format
your sd-card as ext3/4, which will make it unreadable from windows.

On the swedish android site swedroid.se forum there are a guy from Asus that can answer questions about Prime.
On Primes internal storage they have no problem with big files, they have tried with a 7gd+ and that work good.
"ANTIFISH" explained it good.
If you use MicroSD the limitations are 4GB because of fat32,
If you connect a hard drive that is NTFS the Prime can mount it and handle files that are bigger than 4GB.
This is way I going to buy the 64GB version, but just because the MicroSD can't handle big files and you have to use the Primes storage for those files.

Is it possible to format the MicroSD card as NTFS? Wouldn't this solve the problems while still allow the MicroSD card to be writable/readable in Windows PCs?
I thought the original Transformer could read NTFS. I thought I remembered reading that someone hooks up a usb hard drive to their dock and plays movies off of it and that it was formatted NTFS.
I'm a heavy Linux guy (since '93), but I'd rather have it place nice with NTFS then exFAT. I can r/w NTFS just fine now thanks to ntfs-3g. Just format the sdcard as NTFS when and the problem should be solved for large files.
I've been waiting for the Prime because it can play High Profile 4.0 h.264 video in hardware.
I've already converted my entire movie/tv collection into h.264 files last spring. Took me three months with six computers working 24x7. I have over 2800 movie and tv files to watch now. Should keep me busy for several years.
I've always ran a custom rom on the original and was able to read NTFS with my drive hooked up. Don't know about stock stock..

I think i will be better to go with the dock and a small usb drive or stick. Instead of 32gb more you can have nearly 200gb more and you can transfer the movies from the disk to the Transformer.
On my original Transformer I was always able to use ES File Explorer to read files from my PC.
I was also able to stream movies and music via this app. I wonder if that would work on the prime also?
My hope is to store more on my nas and less on my tablet!

as the extent to i know you can play the video format such as H.264 (HP @ 40Mbps), VC-1 AP, MPEG2, MPEG-4,H.263, Theora, DivX 4/5, XviD HT, , VP8, WMV, Sorenson Spark, Real Video, VP6.

Use BSPlayer (lite). It has an integrated file manager with smb support. Another option is to transfer and watch the movie at the same time.

What about .mkv files? I know it's just a container and not a video format, but severel devices had problems with them.
I do what i want, because I can.

Yea I'm curious about this too. Most TV shows and movies you find online in HD nowadays seem to be in .mkv format.
There is a video on YouTube of Prime playing .mkv file (which is said to be h264 high profile 1080p video) without any problems.
I hope I posted this question in the right place. I have searched extensively and I could not find a specific solution.
I am wondering how you all get your HD video files to your Android device. I have a library of 720p MP4 (x264/AAC) videos on optical discs (CD/DVD). The files are 1-4GB each. I'd like to casually select a video and watch it on my Galaxy Nexus. Unfortunately, I haven't found a good way to do this. The phone is certainly capable of playing the videos smoothly and at full 720p resolution. However, it's getting the files to the device in a timely fashion that's the problem. Here's what I've tried so far:
I can load a disc into my desktop, copy the files to a local fileserver, and then transfer to my phone using SFTP or Samba/CIFS. The phone's wifi speed seems to cap out at about 1MB/sec on my 802.11n network so it would take 30 minutes to transfer one file! The phone's storage would fill up quickly too, but I could always delete old ones after I watch them. With such a slow transfer, I'd really have to plan in advance - not to mention the multiple steps to copy from disc to desktop to server to phone. I have tried several different apps and protocols. All seem to cap out at about 10Mbit/sec while a laptop gets 50-60Mbit/sec easy. My previous Android devices from different brands also had this limit so perhaps it's all that's supported by those tiny radios?
I prefer to use Linux on the desktop but there don't seem to be good solutions for MTP and PTP transfers under Linux.
I booted into a Windows machine, put a disc in the drive and attempted to copy to the device via USB 2.0. It was a bit quicker, but I was only able to get 2-4MB/sec so copying a handful of movies all at once takes over an hour - and I'm constantly interrupting my workflow rebooting into different operating systems.
I've considered getting a USB OTG cable so that I could plug an external (self-powered) DVD drive into the phone. However, I haven't found a definitive answer on whether or not generic USB DVD drives are supported via USB Host. Most seem to think they are not.
I'd remove an SD card and use a USB card reader on my desktop, but the Galaxy Nexus doesn't have one.
It would be nice to stream the movies from my network file server, but I haven't found a good solution for that either. Most of the file browsing apps that claim to support streaming actually copy files locally temporarily instead of reading them incrementally from the server. Since I run Linux, I don't have the capability of running those specialized Windows apps that simulate streaming from the desktop. I could root the phone and manually mount network drives, but the management of that doesn't seem elegant given I'm not always in range of my home network and I'd also like to take some with me on the go.
Once the movies are on the phone, they play great and I have no problems. It's just quite a challenge to get them there in a reasonable timeframe without headaches. How do those of you who watch HD movies on your phones handle this? Any suggestions? Thanks!
just google plex for linux and see if that works for you and theres an app for android as well not certain if this helps but I use plex everywhere.
I appreciate the suggestion, but I already have a fileserver set up. I don't see how plex would overcome any speed limitations, which is really the issue.
I use mediahouse upnp dlna app (free) to stream hd movies from a wirelessly connected hard drive.
You could also stream from a pc if you set the pc as a dlna server.
Also you can sometimes stream using es file explorer.
