Any interest in this? - HTC Rezound

My buddy has been creating molds and making true carbon fiber parts for our motorcycles. I attached a pic of a front sprocket cover he just made for his Aprilia... Anyway, I asked him if he could make a mold of a phone case, and produce some high quality, true carbon fiber cases for the Rezond, iPhone 4, etc... He said sure, he can take my case and make a mold and create a thin and incredibly strong case that would just snap on, be highly polished and look amazing.
He has not yet come up with a price, but we are thinking somewhere in the $30-$40 range once he gets the mold and process down, makes sure the fitment is perfect, gets the finish and polish perfect, etc... then he can start producing them.
I know that I have always wanted a real carbon fiber case, not that crappy plastic with the fake weave, and when I did find some they never made one for my phone and if they did, they were like $100 or something crazy...
So I ask you folks, if we could produce a really nice quality item at a really fair price, would there be enough demand to justify it? Would anyone be interested?
Here is what his sprocket cover looks like, so you can get an idea of how the finished product would look. The stuff is strong as hell, and weighs nothing, would add almost no bulk to the phone if done properly.
Thoughts?

If you made 1 for the Galaxy Nexus LTE I'd buy it.

Well, the beauty of this is that we don't need a phone to make a mold. We can take a plastic snap on case that we can buy pretty cheap, and make a mold from that, lay the kevlar weave, pour in the epoxy and vacuum seal it to impregnate the weave and remove all the air bubbles and then let it cure for 24 hours. It would be a slow process, but if the demand is there, we could make up a batch, sell them, then make another batch.
The case would have to be the single piece snap-on type. This stuff has the tensile strength of steel, so it is not going to want to bend a lot. It will have to flex slightly and snap securely on. We will play around until we get it perfect, and then show the finished product and see if people are interested.
Thanks for the feedback. If this works and he sells a decent amount, he can make different molds for different phones, shouldn't be a problem if the demand is there.

Hell yes!

Cool. My friend Daniel is one of those guys that whatever he does, it just comes out awesome. I once needed some touch up paint done to a 2007 Ducati Monster S4RS, and in his garage he added some lines and things and it looked like a factory paint job. The guy has skills.
I got a gouge in my tank, and needed the red lines repaired, and I wanted some green added so that we would have all 3 colors of the Italian Flag on the bike, and this is what he did in his garage one day. Came out amazing looking, several layers of clear, looks like it came that way from the factory... So if he decides to do this, rest assured it will be top notch work and worth every penny.

I'm definitely in, hope this happens soon!
Thanks!

I am gonna get my plastic case to him this weekend so that he can make a mold for the Rezound. Will keep you guys posted, but it will probably take a week for the first completed unit to see the light of day, and we will see where we stand at that point.

There's a "Barley There" case that would be perfect for this. Might be cool to have a hole for the beats logo IMO. The red would add some nice contrast with carbon.
Sweet bike by the way. Looks awesome.

Yeah, I actually have one of these that we were going to use as a starting point for the mold:

We could make a hole for the Beats logo, but he can also buy the kevlar weave in different colors, and red is one of them.

Does that case have holes for the two noise canceling mics or whatever they are in the bottom left corner of the back?

We will make sure that it does. The one on the bottom is open already, but we would need to make a hole to the left of the Beats logo.
We will have everything uncovered that needs to be.

I'm not a case guy but I'm getting excited about this. If the price is right and it comes out right, I could see myself getting a red one to. Now the suspense is killing me.

Or a #55 on the back in memory of Simoncelli could be cool. I wonder if a decal could be applied to the weave before putting in the epoxy? Would be cool to have things under the clear... Hmmm...

I would be very interested in a black/dark grey one. What would be even sicker is if you could replicate the plastic part of the otterbox case with carbon fiber. That would be incredible. That way it would still have the silicone inside, but the outside would be carbon fiber.

Daniel is not a member here but he is monitoring the thread. I think that making C/F parts to replace the plastic "skeleton" of things like the Otterbox is a great idea. All we would need is the plastic part to make a mold, and in some ways that might be easier to make than the standard snap on case that doesn't have the under-layer of silicone... Hmmm....

If you want an idea of the true color of it, it's very similar to the red accents on the phone. It's just like a matte shimmer, if that makes sense. It looks even better in person, trust me.
EDIT: Oh, and korm, the color is a little darker than our beloved Scarlet, but it looks awesome with a big Double T on the screen

I wouldn't say big at all. If you've used the Otterbox Commuter before, it's essentially the same size, just a little more protection. And it hugs the phone reeeeaally well. When I got the blue one, I thought the whole 6-prong thing would cause issues and stretch out. But the plastic is extremely strong and the rubber is thin, but super-high quality. I had to take the blue one off a bunch for battery pulls with all of the flashing I've done in the past few weeks. I was afraid it would start to stretch, but it was perfect every time. I expect nothing less from this red one. It's nice. Probably the first case I would say is actually worth the $30. Don't hesitate; just get it. It's worth it
Has anyone noticed the case does not have those 2 tiny holes in the back of the case? They would be just above the S on the back. Im told those 2 tiny holes in the back cover are for the phones antenna, it is said to help the reception.
Has your reception gone down? Check your -db with the cover on verses off.
that is the only thing I am concerned about, reception is -97db here at the house, yup pretty poor but I dont get any dropped calls, hopefully the cover wont cause problems

Blocking those holes does nothing to signal. It's all good. Same thing was asked about the Commuter case from Otterbox. You would essentially cover those holes anyway if you hold your phone when you talk.

Just got mine and put it on. Looks 5 stars! Feel, so far 4 stars, which is pretty good since I never use a case. It's surprisingly thin..... I may change my mind when I'm sober, but very impressed..... Sound, 1star, my creeks like a MoFo. I was hoping the case would relieve me of creeks, not amplify them. Hopefully I installed it wrong. Anyone else getting creeks?

I think this case looks really nice, but I'm concerned about those LTE holes that are covered on the back. I would think that HTC placed those holes there for a reason, and other cases do not block them. Hmm, trying to decide between this case and the Incipio.

The Ugly Plastic

Like many others, the top of the Evo 4G LTE is a major detractor. When looking for a way to fix this I came across this where they sanded the polycarbonate of the glossy iPhone to give it a brushed look. I'm curious as to how well something similar (using circles insteads of lines to make it matte but not brushed) would work well with the top of the Evo 4G LTE. What makes this worse is that in the video HTC published you can see a prototype with matte plastic and it looks tremendously better.
Gonna check out this link when i get on my pc. But sounds like a pretty good idea. Back when I had an ipod touch I hated the mirror backs because of how scratched up they got so i sanded it to look like stainless steel. Worked out perfect.
Although I don't like the shiny plastic look its not so bad I think I can live with it but if this ends up working good with the EVO maybe ill give it a shot but I don't think ill be the guinea pig haha

I thought so to but it does house the nfc chip so if anyone does make one it probably won't be cheap
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
It's not the NFC chip but just the antenna so third parties should be able to make a replacement part. The area near the lens worries me a bit though. Unless it looks better in person I think I will sand it.
Thanks for posting this. I was already planning to do this but now I have some instructions. For anyone who doesn't want to read the external posts, the process should go something like this:
1. Remove the shiny plastic back-cover
2. Acquire two small pieces of sand paper (one 800 grit and one 1200 grit)
3. Start by wet-sanding with the 800 grit sandpaper (use a forward-back motion)
4. Clean, inspect, and continue sanding until all shiny spots are gone
5. After you've gotten to all the tricky spots, let it dry, clean again with a soft cloth, and check out the results. This will produce a very dull finish.
5. If you would prefer a more polished finish, switch to the 1200 grit sandpaper and carefully re-sand the entire surface
6. Post pictures on xda.
I'm sure there will be third parties making backings. It'd be an easy way to make money too, if anyone is keeping track of this idea. I for one love the two-toned look.
I despise the two-tone look. I wish I'd never seen the AT&T One X in white. makes me hate the looks of the back of this phone that much more. If I get one, I'll be doing this or painting the back or something to make it look better.
If anyone is experienced with sanding, is the 800 anf then 1200 grit approach appropriate?

Yes, coarse paper first (800) then the finer paper (1200), I would test it out first. and don't forget this should be a wet sand with water as a lubricant.
I wanted to put in a request to Seidio to make some in a limited quantity but:
1. I wonder if they'll follow through?
2. Will it kill the signal advantage of the OEM's door?
3. Will it dissapoint (Still glossy, Loud, LOGO plastered, Weird etc.)?
That back peice is also part of my reasoning for wanting a white one.
i wonder if the plastic is a coated red like the original evo.
i thought it was neat with the original evo, you could sand to reveal red.
the back doesnt bother me, it'll be covered with a casing anyways.

I don't understand why people would want to put cases on their phones. It's the same principle as buying an expensive couch and 'protecting' it with a plastic cover or buying an expensive car and then installing neoprene covers on the seats. This is an awesome, well built phone. It was designed to be used 'naked'. If it needed an additional layer of clothing, HTC would have designed it into the phone.
I feel that if people would just learn to take care of their phones, they could enjoy using them the way they were designed to be used.
Anyway... my 2 cents. You have a right to disagree and, if you buy the phone, it's yours to do with as you please. But, personally, I just can't stand to see a beautiful smart phone dressed in a purka (a phone burka).
I'm probably going to sand blast mine as soon as I get it. if its just polycarbonate it'll turn out nicely!
Just wait a month or so for the Chinese to make a nice top replace and post it on Ebay.

Good cases for culinary. Port/Drop protection.

So far Ive been using an otterbox commuter, however there is no otterbox that matches a pink device, the "berry" option and "lily" option are both pukishly horrid looking
The thing with that kind of case, and those of you who work in the kitchen know what Im talking about is the residue build up from heat/humidity that forms alongside the edges of the front of the phone no matter where you place it on you (at least with the commuters), making port covers very important.... as my N2 survived 6 weeks before having a faulty charge port without a port-covering case.
However, Ive had no such luck finding a conventional case that has port covers....thats not otterbox, I've seen some nice cases around these threads but its all up to port covering & drop protection because well....thats entire point of a case.
Hmm a girl who likes heavy duty and rugged cases.....
Pink is hard to match up with....but this is another case that is rugged, have a look!

No offense, but if I saw anyone in a kitchen with their phone out I would tell the manager that there was no way I was going to eat there.
#1. You are bringing glass on the line. Your phone breaks, you just screwed the entire line.
#2. Your phone is a bacteria magnet. If you touch your phone while you are cooking and you do not stop to wash your hands, you are potentially putting diners at risk.
#3. You are at work. Act like it. Leave your phone in the break room.

Thats silly, but obvious. I would never want to get flour or butter etc on the phone it never comes out of back pocket, theres already a no phones out except while on break rule anyways plus who has time when theyre making batches of desserts and breads, But humidity build up in kitchen is why im looking for such a case. There is no lockers in the bakery which I find odd but thats how it is.
Its just about protecting it from the added variables in a kitchen environment

Your phone should never be in the kitchen anyway. Leave it in your purse and problem solved. Beyond that, the Zerolemon rugged case offers decent protection (but is huge) or you can look on ebay for port plugs.

LG G5 painted plastic coating?

LG G5 painted in plastic coating?
Jerry rig everything video shows alot of proof.
Most of the professional reviewers are scared to speak the truth. Why? Are you scared of LG?
It is a die-cast aluminium body which then has the antennas placed on the outside (because the signals wouldn't get through the metal) there is then a primer to help the paint bond to the aluminium and cover up the antennas. They then use a microdised finish over the top which is effectively a metallic paint.
It's not plastic it's just not been machined and anodised. They were going for a different take on the metal body that could allow them to hide the antennas.

A diffrent take lol. That plastic coating pretty much negates the need of having metal in a phone. Just make it out plastic if ythats all ill feel when holding it !
Most concerning part is the display assembly. So thin that you can see the pressure points when you select something. Maybe i am to demanding idk, but all the different phones over the years i have never experienced such thing.

im pretty sure no one complained about such thing with S5/G4 and earlier devices that used full plastic builds. You are delusional my friend, they are missleading consumers, & then coming out with some bs excuse, "we are doing it differently, we didnt want to do what everyone else is doing" !
I'm not delusional, people just seem to have got it stuck in their heads it is basically a full plastic build. There is plastic in every metal phone, just of varying degrees.
I've no issue with the way they have constructed the phone. If you don't like it then don't buy it.

i gotta see ppls experiences with the G5, its good to know how good the competition is doing this year , apparently there is none so far
I got the S7 Edge as well but was hanging around here to see if I liked the G5 as I still have one more jump until July with Tmobiles jump on demand.
Looks like I'll be waiting to see what the HTC 10 brings to the table.

I'm not delusional, people just seem to have got it stuck in their heads it is basically a full plastic build. There is plastic in every metal phone, just of varying degrees.
I've no issue with the way they have constructed the phone. If you don't like it then don't buy it.

I agree with you. Peoples' ignorance is funny to read on here lol.

The truth is LG G5 is ugly phone compared to galaxy S7 edge. I even think HTC 10 will be better then LG G5.
Am sorry to say.

definetly, the chanfer might be too big, but still, they are fixing what was broken in previous gens, & there software is the top OEM skin out there, so yeah it will be a good competitor to the S7/Edge.
It's called paint people get over it, especially from your gs7s
trolls everywhere…
seriously… this device has not been shipped worldwide yet and people already start complaining about built quality. get a life.
i preordered my g5 including a free camera module and i'm proud of that decision so far.
all thats left is that they start shipping to germany.
I keep wanting to think that the GS7E is good lucking. Maybe it's just that I'm coming from the G3 but....it just seems too damn narrow! But to be honest, the biggest problem is that I can't play with the GS7E at any of the stores, they're all on demo mode...maybe I should go into another carrier's store where there's one I can actually demo. Can anyone tell me whether your carrier typically has its demo phones NOT on retail mode? I'm on sprint here (and still undecided between G5/GS7E/GS7).

I per-ordered the G5 and got it Friday. I have had no issues with. This whole metal vs. plastic issue is a joke. Structurally speaking, this is great phone. They had to switch to the thin metal aluminum in the back because of the void between the back and the screen when you take out the battery. And when you do take the battery out, there's very little to no deflection.
I have an metal body iphone 5s for work and i hate it. This is so much better.

I'm not here to insult, just to inform on my experience thus far. However, i wish you wouldn't be commenting so negatively on this phone without using it for some considerable time. A 10 minute in-store demo use of the phone shouldn't count especially when you are looking for all the negatives. When i pick up a phone in the store i look for all the negatives first before the positives.
Like I said, the look and fell of this phone is great after 4 days of use. The main selling point for me was the removable battery and the camera. The battery seems like it's very easy to swap and the camera is superb. I took it to a show on Friday and the pictures where incredible especially in wide view. I'm sure the 7s takes better pictures, but i really like the wide angle.
I personally don't care for all the friends modules they're advertising.
Had i read your comments before i purchased the phone, i probably wouldn't have bought the phone. Let me know if you have any other questions and I'll be happy to answer.

Orzly FlexiCase for the OnePlus 5 arrived! Ask me anything!

Hey guys!
So I received my FlexiCase for the OnePlus 5 today! I can finally move away from my custom case.. (a oneplus 3 case with the camera slot cut out!) I am delighted to see that Orzly are one of the first big-name brands with their cases out! I had the FlexiCase for my OnePlus 3 last year and loved it, so purchased this one the moment I saw it up for pre-order on amazon.
Now lets get into the review!
One of the first things you see in the package when you open it is a letter from the companies co-founder, hoping that you like the product!
http://imgur.com/a/TpGJG
Now onto the packaging, its similar to other products. Dead front you can see through the clear piece of plastic a part of your case, and the rest of the white, orange and gray packaging is surrounding it. The back of it houses some information about Orzly, some social media handles and tells you how you can win some free prizes!
Taking the case out of the packaging, it is a flexible gel case, as the name implies. All the buttons are covered by the case, and the case has protruding areas, along with a gap between the volume up and down buttons to help you determine which is which!
Putting the phone into the case, all the ports, including the camera and alert slider line up perfectly as you can see in the images below! None of the microphones are covered, which is great seeing as I had read of a few companies had covered the one by the camera at the back! Speaker lines up perfectly, and there is ample room for your dash charge cable and headphone jack to fit in, without pushing up the case. The alert slider has a nice little touch, there is a little bit of a space behind it so that your thumb can fit in nicely, without having to struggle! It is actually very useful and you will be able to see it in the images where I compare it with the OnePlus3/3t FlexiCase. Around the back in the bottom right there is a small bit of Orzly branding, which isn't really too obtrusive and is very small.
http://imgur.com/a/wNlwp
There is a lip around the screen, which would be able to protect your device should you drop it and will help to protect you from scratches!
http://imgur.com/a/wEg9a
My opinions? This case is great for anybody who loves the thinness of the OnePlus 5. It sits nearly flush with the back, yet protects the camera. Even though it is thin, it protects the screen which is great! I personally got the clear one, but they do have other matte colours should you want them such as black, red and blue! A link to buy can be found here! (change .co.uk to .com or whatever depending on your location!)
If you have any questions about this case, feel free to ask below and I will reply!
Mine also arrived, pretty standard, good quality and it's nice to be able to see the phone!

I think the one from spigen i used on op3 is much better as it is a more hybrid material. Meaning the plastic at the edges is more solid. The edges on the orzly one are too soft so they are moving easily, i dont think it can protect the edges from high impact. Im sure if you dropp it on a edged surface like the edges of some stairs, the edges will bend back and the screen or edges will be f***ed for sure. I will buy a spigen hybrid crytal clear as soon as they pop up on amazon germany.

Ah yeah, this is the flexicase its a bit different. I used the orzly fusion bumper case mainly on my op3 last year, which would be an equivalent to that spigen i believe
That's going to be a nice shade of nicotine brownish yellow in about a month.. Whether you smoke or not.
Will never buy a clear case again for this reason.

Sooo much this. You'll need to replace this case monthly if you want to keep enjoying it. It'll look like crap soon.
Only way I'll get a clear case is if the back is hard plastic that won't discolor and the edges need to be a solid color TPU.

Have to say the one case thats nearly clear which doesn't discolour (noticeably) is the Tech 21 variants, they have a mesh so it's no completely apparent.
But yea I learned long ago that clear cases are a no no, nicotine brown is not a good look.

Hopefully not! My 3/3t flexicase is still pretty clear, slighty more yellow but not as bad as others i've seen. hoping this stays the same!

Aye it does go bad after a while, I had one years ago when i smoked and put two and two together, but it's just grime that it picks up, stick with smokey ones now or black.
Supposed they still get filthy but cant' see it as much.
Worst thing about it is they look amazing when you first get them

They do but those aren't even shipping yet. When I ordered my black case on Amazon back on June 24th the listing said shipping would start on July 13th. I've already dropped my slippery OP5 once and have a small dent to show for it. I hope the case arrives while I still have something to protect with it.

Same here. I loved the concept of a clear case to show off a nice phone. First time using a clear case was the one that came with my OPx. Didn't take long for it to start turning that nicotine brownish yellow color. (my bad smoking habit didn't help much of course) Got a black spigen case after that and haven't looked back.
I'm waiting for spigen to come out with one for the OP5 and hopefully they do so quickly. I nearly had a heart attack when I dropped it onto the concrete while exiting my work van. (chevy 3500 so It fell from a pretty good distance) Landed screen first but luckily the gorilla glass 5 held up. Ive also got one of the official OP wooden cases which has so far saved the metal finish from some minor scrapes and dings here and there.

Yep I never buy perfectly clear cases anymore, they always go off colour and look dirty. I've gone with the Otterbox for my OP5 this time around, that might change if I start feeling it's too bulky. BUT I love the knowledge and reassurance of the protection it offers over other slim/flexi cases.

Yeah, transparent plastic anything can vary quite alot I find. Some transparent stuff I've had discolors really easy, others last absolutely years without losing a single thing and still cooking crystal clear. (others, varying degrees in between). Have you got any pics of your 3T FlexiCase to show me how they hold up over the test of time? If it's not that bad, then I do like the idea of having transparent cases, because the phone itself seems pretty nice, so is nice to be able to see it through the case, especially stiff like the logo, etc.. But if it's bad, then would probably just go for a colored version instead.
Looks like even the colored ones are finally available now (even just yesterday, all but the transparent one were all showing on pre-order, so looks like t's a safe bet deliverywise for any of the colors either way now)
www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B072QX9H9G but I would still be keen to get your opinion on this, as transparent would have been my first choice, however it's a very good point that alot of people have raised, so I want to be extra specially careful to hear from real people who have used them before knowing which color to get. Main thing is I want it to look nice!
Thanks.
