If you love something, let it go... - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

"If you love something, let it go. If it comes back to you, its yours forever. If it doesn’t, then it was never meant to be."
I sent my Transformer Prime for repairs today. I didn't think it would be this difficult to part from it. Here are some photos I took as we got ready to say goodbye:

But seriously, I am hopeful the ASUS can fix the problems with this tablet. I could have just returned it for refund - instead I chose to give ASUS the benefit of the doubt and let them fix it. We will find out in about two weeks how they do.
Cheers.

Really tempted to send it off for repairs myself but the fact I can live with the problems with mine (Weak(ish) Wi-Fi away from router and a creaking screen) makes it hard to make up my mind. I'd rather wait to see if they announce a hardware fix and allow us to send them in for a proper repair considering I've got at least a year to have them repair it. Two weeks without a back up tablet now that I've had a taste is difficult .

So, OP, what is it that ASUS has promised to fix?

i did the same thing..
waiting on it to come home =0

Aaaaww it's so cute !
This has nerd love all over it <3 <3 <3

Can you update me when it gets back as to whether it has any damage such as scratches that weren't there when you sent it ? That's another thing I'm worried about . Also whether they fixed anything major.

Yeah man...we would like to know what you sent yours in for. Did you call them up and speak to some illiterate person or were they knowledgeable? And what did they promise to fix.
I have really poor wifi....I have a 3 bedroom house and I have problems in my bedroom and in the toilet (this is where it's needed most) hahaha. And nonexistent GPS signal.

You know several people here have sent theirs in. It's about at least 2 weeks now for them and I haven't heard anything back. I think asus had them killed or something. Maybe even sign a NDA after they fixed it.

Nice thread. Hope it comes back upgraded for ya

Why I sent it to RMA?
1) GPS. Need I say more?
2) White light bleed in top right corner
3) Dead/stuck white pixel near bottom right corner
4) HDMI output plays audio only through left channel of Sony Bravia. Android 4.0 fixed this partially - now seems to play stereo okay however does not pass surround (DD or DTS) thru to audio receiver.
5) Micro HDMI port seems to be getting lose due to the rounded edges.
6) WIFI issues. Strong within 30 or less feet of AP - but drop off after that as well inconsistent from some rooms that fall within 30 feet or less of AP.
How many did they promise to fix?
Some promises, some uncertainty. For GPS they said it will be "fixed" but not sure it will be to my "standards". For Sony TV issue, I got "Maybe software update will fix that". For light bleed and pixel issues, promised to be fixed. They will look into the micro HDMI port and WIFI issues.
What do I expect them to fix?
Everything. Nobody likes to have defects out of the box. They have some obviously hardware issues that may or not be overcome. I may need to become more assertive at some point, but for now I will trust the process (naively).
I expect to have the unit back by February 2nd or at least hear from them.
Yes it sucks letting it go - especially because we got rid of my wife's desktop for this. Down to one PC for a little bit.

subscribed. please do update this as they return.
I am specifically interested in the wifi and gps, but hoping you have all of your issues fixed.
Thanks, keep us posted!
In case this thread gets locked (people around here cannot stand a single negative word being said about the product), please do PM me.

Update:
Props to Canada Post for getting my darling Transformer Prime to RMA department in one business day and unharmed!
My status on the ASUS repair page has changed to "Repairing". The customer service person said 7 days, so the countdown begins.
Here's what the ASUS page looks like:
I'd be interested in hearing from others who have sent their TP to RMA for repairs. How long after delivery before you heard from them? Does anyone have feedback about the North Bay, Ontario facility (i.e, http://www.nortek.on.ca/)?
I spoke with the receptionist at Nortek and inquired if I could speak with the individual repairing my tablet. While she confirmed that it was the repair facility, of course, she directed me to call ASUS instead. It was obvious what she would say - but I had to ask!
More to come...

It would be very interesting to talk to the/a engineer doing the repairs, shame they wouldn't let you.

Hopefully we'll hear from you again once it shows back up.
Ive subscribed to other RMA threads but nothing sofar.

Hmm - interesting. I'll be following, too.
I'm very happy with mine, despite hiccups. I've known for a while bleed is just "one of those things" and unless it is bad, it's almost to be expected to some extent, so I am surprised they can fix that (I've not paid much attention to light bleed issues on other tablets or this one, so that is my own inattention for not knowing). Mine has light bleed in two very obvious spots on the right hand side (landscape), noticeable by everyone who has seen it when my tablet powers up.
I hope yours gets fixed to your liking.

I have a single stuck/dead pixel as well and I was wondering if I should RMA it or return it to frys.com for a replacement (claiming gps or something), but that seems risky seeing how many bad units there are... Did Asus say they'd fix the stuck/dead pixel? I read somewhere that they wouldn't replace the screen unless it had multiple dead pixels and/or anomalies.

I've heard a different version: "If you love something, let it go. If it doesn't come back to you, hunt it down and kill it!"
Sorry man, you didn't let it go, you just sent it on vacation. I let mine go, over a week ago, back to the seller! Should Asus ever manage to make it work like it should, it will come back when I buy another. Otherwise, I'll kill the idea.
Good luck.

Thats why I bought mine at bestbuy.com (14 day return on tablets), Bought 2 and 1 had one dead pixel. Returned the tablet the next day at a local bestbuy, did a OMS order for another one and should be receiving one this week.

ASUS told me that a dead pixel should be sent to RMA.As I said in other posts, they were ambiguous about some complains, but the screen was one that they said would be fixed. Give them a call yourself and see what they say.
Thanks to other posts for keeping the hope alive with me. We'll see what happens.

Thanks! I think I'll wait a week or two then before I call, I'm sure the repair centers are booked full currently.

Day two update:
I checked my repair status and now it's been changed to "Waiting for Material/ Spare parts". I don't know what this means exactly, but I'm sure people want to speculate what the materials might be (e.g., plastic backing... just kidding). See post #9 for the reasons why I sent my TP for repairs.
Here is the screenshot:
I think it's important to remain optimistic about the return process (or for as long as I can). For the time being, I'm pleased with the response time and what appears to be an effort to fix something. We'll see where things go over the coming days. Remember 7 days from receipt at ASUS is January 25th.
Cheers.

Screen creeky

Not sure if I'm the only one with this issue, but near the ASUS logo, if I push down anywhere in that area, I can fanilty here the screen press down and creek. While this isn't a major issue, I am OCD and if I paid 500 bucks or a device, I expect everything to be functioning normally. It happens in that part of the touch screen only, everything else it like it should.
Does anyone else have this issue?
Doesn't happen with my Prime. I do have some creaking with my Samsung Epic 4G Touch and Motorola Photon smartphones, but my wife doesn't with her Epic 4G Touch. Had some creaking on my Epic 4G. Also have some with my Panasonic camcorder. Don't have any with either of my Zune 80GB media players. A part of the dash on my Infiniti G37 has a tiny bit of give that rattles a little after 14K miles. Have a little bit of creaking in my HP Envy 14 notebook, but my wife's Toshiba M400 Tablet PC doesn't have any. None in my original Transformer, but the Xoom I owned had a little bit.
So, yeah, a little bit of off-tolerance creaking is pretty common in the things I own. Some have it, some don't. So far, I haven't had any that's caused me to want to return any of them, and I've pretty much reserved myself to the fact that unless I'm paying millions of dollars for something, it's possible to have some variance.

No, no creaking at all like you described. plus your poll doesn't make sense. what does having a software update have to do with your screen creaking? lol. that's why I didn't vote yet. software and screen creaking is not related

Thanks for your input. Depending on where and when you get your prime, it could determine how "up to date" it is, and you can tell how long it has been sitting in its box, etc. If it was a bad model, and it had the latest updates, you can tell it is ether faulty, or something is up when manufacturing.

what app you used to write over the screenshot? the included supernote?
On the right edge in the middle quarter my screen is slightly loose and creaks as a result , everything else works fine so undecided wether to return.
I probably should on principle but international so would be a hassle and worried that a replacement would be worse with other issues.
To be honest i rarely notice it , its more that i know there is an issue that is annoying.

Then your poll is confusing. It should have been, "What update was your tablet at when you received it?" Because of course, most people have already updated their Primes to the latest version regardless of when they received it.
I'm not sure that this kind of issue is really all that related to when a particular unit is manufactured. Every device, no matter how long it's been on the market, will have occasional lemons produced, not to mention units that are the slightest fraction off-tolerance. In the case of a device like the Prime with such tight tolerances, it's bound to happen.
Maybe the person who did this production step on your unit sneezed at just the wrong moment. Boom, there you go. Creaking. And if this particular pressure point is even checked in QA, either yours wasn't sampled or THAT person got distracted by the hottie that walked by at that particular moment.
Again, these aren't low-volume, multi-million dollar products being made. They're high-volume, low-margin, relatively low-cost products where spending the resources for absolute perfection on every unit is simply cost-prohibitive. We'd be paying $10K for these things to have every single one be absolutely perfect build-wise.
Just venting here, because I think folks get WAY too picky about such things. If something literally doesn't function (like the haptic feedback on one of my Primes), then that's something to complain about. But a tiny difference in fit and finish just seems a bit ticky-tacky to me.

it was a question that you are looking for answers about? Sounds like a Q and A to me.. Renaming it does not change anything.. but you now re worded it.. so I guess its ok..
I got it too on the left part of the screen. It is really annoying, when you accidently tap instead of just touch it clicks.. Gonna return it for another one as I also have some pixels issues and dust on the lens of the front camera. All the units they had at the ASUS Benelux launch party did not have this creaking issue.

A question that opens discussion. If it was a question like, does the Prime have a built in USB port? Answer: No. That would break the rules.

Yep. Left side of my Prime had click/creak. It was extremely annoying when using the tablet in a quiet room. The tablet just didn't feel solid - not like my wife's GT 10.1 or even my cheapy GTablet. I'm really surprised at the "don't be so picky" responses. $500 must be pocket change for some of you guys.
My Prime went back today. I'll pick one up again when/if they get the issues worked out.

Mine has one small area (Black bezel, just to the right of the power connector) that when pushed on seems to go down a little, with a faint creek.
Annoyed me at first, think I've gotten used to it now (Not exactly a place I touch regularly). Would return it, but being in Australia, could take too long to get a replacement.
I forgot that it had international warranty so i will ring service centre in my city and see if i can get it fixed , i would think of all the problems that this device has fixing the screen looseness would be pretty straight forward unless i am missing something. Doing a search found some people who said asus even had courier come and pick it up for them so i will give them a call tomorrow!
I can confirm that I have the same issue in the same area as OP.
Also when I shake the device it sometimes rattles form the inside which seems to be coming from the top right somewhere.
man and i thought am unlucky and have faulty device. Now I see... asus still sucks with their quality control. Shame on them. 500$ ****
Hopefully my exchange wont have the same issue.
I found the source of the rattle noise. It comes from the right hand dock connector.

GPS hardware variances

I have confirmed that there are very significant variances in the hardware that is causing GPS problems. As I reported in a thread earlier this week, I received a new 64GB model from Amazon a few days ago that had completely dead GPS functionality. Even outside under clear skies, it never picked up even a single satellite. Thankfully, Amazon has amazing customer service and received more stock yesterday. They overnighted me a replacement unit that arrived this morning. Thankfully, since they forward ship replacements I could compare the old and new models side-by-side and decide which one was more broken (I was terrified that the replacement would have dead WiFi, backlight bleed-through, dead-pixels, or one of the other myriad hardware problem that people report. Luckily, its perfect).
The first thing I did (before running ANY firmware updates) was to install the GPS Test app. Within 30 seconds on a cold boot, it had a position fix sitting in the middle of my living room. I then proceeded to install all firmware/ICS updates up to the latest, and it is still completely functional. Granted, the signal-to-noise ratio is not awesome (its no Garmin), but it is definitely a functional GPS. In short, if you get a new TF201 be sure to test the GPS immediately so that you can return it right away and DON'T SETTLE for a broken one.
Here are screenshots from both of my units, good and bad. They were sitting side-by-side in the middle of the first floor of a two-story house. Both units are C1OKAS serial numbers and all firmware revisions are identical at the time of the tests. Bad serial number is 0056xx, good is 0171xx. Perhaps they found a manufacturing problem and fixed it in later batches.

Also, I put in a tech support ticket with Asus for the GPS issue the day I got the TF201 earlier this week and they never bother even replying to me. This company has a support problem (I'm preaching to the choir here...).

It has nothing to do with the metal case, that's for sure. However, one pogo pin contact could be bad while another fully closed and functional. If it works don't flex it!

Well lucky you, you've got a winner!
Mine is C1OKAS 026XXX which would put it after the 0171XX batch (and thus, updated GPS?), but GPS does not get any signal (at least, with Wifi turned on and without the .11 firmware update, which I can't get yet due to the serial number missing issue).
Squeezing does not do anything for GPS or Wifi reception.
Once the .11 update becomes available on the website I will try again.

Hmm, well so much for them working out the manufacturing bugs. I've seen no evidence that any of the firmware updates changed the GPS performance one way or another. If its not working at all out of the box, its not going to work without hardware repair.
Nice comparison. I started a thread to try to track down the differences between the models to see if a common link in GPS performance could be found. Sadly it was sabotaged by some of the brain dead morons on this forum bleating the Asus "aluminum case" line!
Well the evidence is building.
Took mine into the local service centre for a new screen. Nil spares here. So holding onto unit until spares arrive next week & they will repair the GPS at the same time.
Nice to see Amazon on to it.
I have a handful of screen shots from January 14th when I was finally able to get gps signal inside the apartment, never very far from a window, some with wifi on, some with wifi off. I was getting locks of up to 9 satellites. But after the latest update I don't get anything. I can't lock onto to any satellites inside the apartment anymore at all, and I'm only 5 feet away from a window with wifi on. And do you have to calibrate your compass every time you move locations with your Prime? I Mine is aways wrong every time I take it anywhere.
I am totally inclined to believe it is hardware related but don't understand why mine was moderately OK and now crap.

Yeah, its sad some people are so closed minded to other possibilities even when there's evidence to pointing other ways. Plus Asus only said the aluminum case is a possibility, not the only reason. That's where I think some people are stuck on that.
I have two Primes sitting in front of me, as such:
#1: Great screen. The best I've seen yet (and I've had 6), demonstrating some wide variability in screen quality (temperature, colors, text) across units. The temperature on this one is perfect (makes whites the truest), colors are deep and excellent, details pop out, and text is awesome. However, it has one stuck pixel that's only obvious on dark screens and high brightness and the speakers have a TINY bit of vibration at highest volume on some songs. Haptic feedback is the best I've had so far.
However, GPS on it is horrible. After giving it as much as 30 minutes to lock on, the best I've gotten is 5/10 satellites locked. Wifi also seems a bit weaker.
#2: Good screen. Better than the one I'm returning to HH Gregg, which had a horrible yellow cast, terrible colors, and pixellated text. This screen is better, but not as good as #1--a touch more yellow, and not as much detail in complex images. Text is okay but not as good as #1. No stuck pixels, but a little bit of light bleed that's visible on dark screens and high brightness. Audio is fine. Haptic feedback doesn't work.
However, GPS on it is excellent. In about a minute, it locks on to as many as 12/14 satellites. It also locks indoors (within a 5 feet of a glass patio door). Wifi also seems little stronger.
So, this is what is driving me nutty. There's WAY too much hardware variation among these things. I love the damn tablet as well--I can read it outside on my porch in direct SoCal sun, which is very important to me. My OG Transformer was very nice, but I couldn't read it outdoors worth a damn.
So, ASUS, what am I supposed to do, eh? Accept a bit worse screen to have better radio performance, or accept a bit worse wifi and terrible GPS to have the best screen? Or, keep trying to get a "perfect" unit?
I'm honestly tempted to just keep buying and returning units until I get one I'm happy with. Perhaps that's a way to flush defective units out of the system and communicate to ASUS that they have some problems that need fixing. I've been a solid supporter of ASUS, but after having 6 units in my hands that all have some significant issue or another, my support is starting to waver.
My gps worked fine outside prior to the last update. I could pick up around 15 sats and get a lock. Now i get nothing. Asus can blame it on the metal all they want but i know the last update screwed it up for me.

I'd love to think it was just the update, but having two otherwise identical systems, 1 with working gps and 1 without, makes me doubt it.

Wait, why would a wifi only tablet even need gps? Even when on a tether, you could just use your android or (dare I say it??) iphone's gps.

I ran gps test prior to the last update. Got sats. I didnt even move the device. I then did the update. Then i ran gps test and got nothing. They killed it. Yes the back plate weakens the signal, but asus killed it in the last update. Same exact thing hppened to my dads.

Gps is used by several apps to find location. I have no need to use the tablet as a nav device, but the idea of a component inside my $500 tablet not working really bugs me. Thats the point.

Interesting. I have two BC units with the same hardware revision that have both been fully updated. One gets a very quick lock, one doesn't get a lock unless I let it sit for quite some time, at which point it gets only half the locks of the other one and they're fleeting. At first, I thought it wasn't getting a lock at at (because I hadn't given it enough time), and really it might as well not get any.
So, it must be that some units have hardware issues that the update reveals, while some don't. It can't be the update by itself, because some units work fine with it applied.
I'd love to think that there's something in the last update that caused some systems to lose GPS, because then there'd be hope that this one with the great screen could see its GPS fixed. I'm just not sure of it, however.

Have you tried pinching the "weaker" GPS unit, near the top center (in landscaper mod), near the cameras. There is supposed to be a GPS pogo pin there, and some may have loose connection. There are other threads talking more about the pogo pins.
So going by the op's story, the availability problem is also being caused by all the unsatisfied buyers that are getting immediate replacements for their broken units. Which I am inclined to be ok with. Hopefully, when mine ships on 2/9 (hopefully) it will be a newer problem free model.

I've had success squeezing maybe half an inch off center toward the power button along the top. I have to squeeze very hard though, hard enough that you see the "squishing LCD" type effect, and even then it only works (as in it normally sees no satellites anywhere) for maybe ten minutes and only with an absolutely unobstructed view of the sky (even a couple bare branches will cut the visible satellites in half).
I badly want to replace it, but Amazon will only let me return since the 32g gray is out of stock. My exchange window is until the end of February, so hopefully I don't have to just give up and return it.
This stupid tablet has been so much trouble...

ASUS is listening, new Prime came differently!

I don't know if ASUS is listening, or they fixed problems that have been plaguing early adopters.
But I unboxed today my new Transformer Prime Champagne Gold 32GB model. Inspected the box and the box had a few scratches on it but I'm not surprised. I open it up, and there is a beautiful piece of machinery sitting right in front of me. First thing I notice is the sticker in the bottom right. I don't know if this was really needed but the sticker changed. It had new icons, for the Tegra 3 promo etc.
Second thing I did was inspect if for any scratches. And happy to report there are none! Every Transformer Prime I got into the office had the slightest of scratches somewhere on it. Well, none of this one. Phew!
Third, I take the plastic of the Prime, and try to turn it on. Not surprised, it came with little power, and had enough to tell me to connect to the charger. After flipping though the manuals to get to the charger, I noticed the manual was updated to reflect Ice Cream Sandwich OS. Sweet!
Fourthly, I notice the power button is slightly easier to press. It isn't bigger, but it defiantly didn't take as much force as my other Prime did.
Fifth, since the Prime was nearly dead, I went to go grab for the charger. I then noticed the cleaning cloth. ASUS took the cleaning cloth and x2 the size. There is also a new cardboard image the shows the Prime WITH a keyboard dock, and how to clean the screen, and back of the Prime. So thats new.
And finally, it came with Ice Cream Sandwich on board, with the latest update OTA that was released yesterday (today?). Does that mean new models are finally shipping with Ice Cream Sandwich and issues fixed? I hope so.
Now the Prime is thrown on its charger for its first charge, and here is a screenshot to show its a C1. I tested my Prime with a bluetooth headset and never lost Wifi, or dropped any speed. I hope to have screenshots later after the Primes very first charge has completed.
Thought I update all of you, THERE ARE GOOD PRIMES COMING! DON'T BE WORRIED WHEN PURCHASING! My company made the right decision to purchase Transformer Primes for app development and I hope you make the great jump.

EDIT: These were ordered from Amazon last week. I recommend ordering from Amazon, since the new models seem to be arriving in that location. Others may have too, but this the first I have ever seen this.
Today was my last return day for mine at BB. They are sold out & not selling any due to so many returns at the moment. I checked my local Staples online for stock for the hell of it. It said they had some in stock!
I quickly called & the guy checked and said they just a few in today. He held one for me & i ran to BB returned & took my money over to Staples.
I also got a C1 model & seems to be performing alot better. Wifi seems to be very good so far. I was only getting 2-3mbps on my living room. With my C1 i am getting upwards of 11-12. I am a happy camper right now!
Glad to hear the good news. Be Warned though. OTHERS will come n claim you're lying. They'll try to make you feel you not testing it right..lol. they'll try to make you show proof... you are in an Elite club now. Welcome! We've been waiting for you lol

They changed something, and thank god it was for the good!
Seems like nothing you listed it really worthy or earth shattering of a change to make the claim "THERE ARE GOOD PRIMES COMING!"
The things your "wowed" by hardly matter.. a bigger cleaner? ICS in a manual? ICS preloaded? none of this is... well, not that big of a deal
Nothing you said talks about the issues that plague people like ad hoc, gps, wifi, etc.. you hit on real, real low level surface things.
When they start shipping TF201 with a modified plastic strip back cover, youll see me pulling out my credit card and buying another prime and testing her out once again.

He's simply trying to prove that there are newer, improved Primes coming because the newer ones are packaged differently. Obviously if he had gotten one of the "defective" ones, it would have come packaged exactly the same. But now he got a different one and it seems to be a little better. Doesn't mean it's COMPLETELY OMG AMAZING SUPER SPECIAL AWESOME, but it's better so far.
Now to return to pooping on his party.

Hahaha at the cleaning cloth. I kept mine from the one i returned and have one from the keyboard dock. So i have 3 total. I spread them around as i hate smudges on my primes glass! Haha.
i received my TFP from amazon on 01/27. it's also a C1, but didn't come as the OP described and with honeycomb still installed.
Doesn't C1 simply mean produced in Jan 2012? Many Primes have been delivered as C1 and did not have the changes the OP posted, so C1 does not say a lot...

No, I'm not a non-believer, I'm only saying a serial number starting with C1 does not identify the new prime. I'm actually curious to see what else has changed (less bleeding, less dead pixels, better WIFI?) - but most of that can only be evaluated when a lot of people get those new primes.

White AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note SGH-I717, possible defect

Discovered a hair line crack today on my White AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note SGH-I717. Took it to a corporate store and the manager told me there isn't anything he can do about it, because it isn't a known, reported issue. Well I am here to be the first. Hopefully this doesn't become a common issue and there is some sort of recourse. Meanwhile I will be posting to let others be aware of this possible defect.

Where is that. A crack is a crack regardless of reports.
If you are within 3O days the store should swap it. After 30 days you need to call warranty...800-801-1101 i think

Yup. My white 3GS. Some where in India now though. Good riddance. But I do recall something happening with the Nexus One where it would crack near the power button sometimes.
That sucks. But i do recall white iphone 3-3gs having this issue. I hope this doesnt happen to my note.

A crack, of any kind, is considered to be physical damage, and is therefore not a warranty exchangeable issue. Can only be replaced via insurance claim. If by some miracle, you get a store rep to replace it, then kudos to you!

The problem with the "Gray Scale" wasn't discovered to be a problem until recently, which this phone has. Also it has reset TWLauncher 4 times, when enabling Wifi via the notification bar, I just chalked it up as crappy programming..

Sometimes these things show up later, that is why they are called "manufactures' defects" and have warranty to cover replacements or repairs.

Anyways, no haven't sat on it. I carry my phone in my left front pocket, if that might be an issue. I've always carried them there, never happened to any of my black phones..
My bad about the double post, forgot I had posted that question before going to the AT&T store from my phone via Tapatalk..
If a mod would be so kind as to merge the threads, I'd appreciate it, and sorry
I remember the white DS Lite got cracks in the hinge and like people said before the white 3GS and maybe the 3G had some problems with cracks and yellowing. The Note doesn't have a problem since more people would have reported it by now, you probably just got a bit of bad luck.

It's possible. If while flexing the plastic was the weakest part, then sure, it could crack first.
One big thing I have a hard time reading about in this thread, is the focus on just the white models. Ever think that you never saw any micro cracking on a black device be cause the crack itself was black? If it didn't stand out like it would on a white device, you wouldn't even know to look for it.

This is true, although what happens eventually with these cracks is air, moisture, dust, sand, debris gets into the split and eventually into the screen which would be visible regardless of the color of the phone's casing. I guess black material is more flexible.
Another bigger problem is that split may eventually become bigger and worse yet is get caught on something and snap off. I have seen the issue with cracks near the power and volume rockers, from the normal pressure of the user pressing the area which is open and more delicate after long term use... Eventually splitting at two ends and part of the bezel falling off. ** They claim this is physical damage, which in part is true, but only because the quality of the materials was questionable in the first place.
Again, personally I'm not too bothered. But the Samsung Warranty rep mentioned exactly that (above) and if that were to eventually happen, it would not be covered under the warranty and then be considered physical damage.
I then reminded her what a 00mred00 reminded me of..

And she reluctantly agreed.
It's like saying Toyota doesn't have to compensate a user for having faulty breaking system or electrical problems with acceleration on their cars. Because the user crashed and totaled the car, dismissing the user, claiming physical damage.. ofc some people will just take that, others won't and if enough don't accept that as the answer, then the manufacturer will have to address the problem, but only until then.. If they can get away with it..
Honestly I hope this is an isolated problem, only affecting a very few owners. And I just happen to get one of the affected units. Because truthfully I absolutely love the phone and if I were to get a replacement, I would want another white one with the hopes of it not happening again, at least to me
Hope you find a solution. BTW White Note ROCKS!
-Once you go NOTE, you'd say 4 inches a Joke
** RESOLVED (sort of, but I couldn't close) details within...
I have to write this to let people know there is a solution and to give credit where credit is due.
So after going to DSC, they couldn't help me because they don't have the Note to exchange. They recommended I go back to the store.
I went to a store about a block away, explained. They told me I would have to go back to the original store and speak directly to the manager, not to waste time with rep. Explain the situation and have her do an exception and do the replacement.
Instead, I went to one last AT&T store, one that happens to be in a more posh neighborhood. Went directly to a manager (Rick, Coral Cables FL Store). Explained everything, told him what DSC, the other store, AT&T warranty support and Samsung Warranty Support all told me to do. He looked at the phone, looked at a display phone. Went to a rep (Yavon, Coral Gables FL Store) and told him to get me a new replacement.
Trouble started for me, when they tried to look up the account, purchase, via the IMEI on their system. It didn't show up. Happen to be another Manager in a suit and tie was there and helped the rep. Issue here is that it was pre-ordered via online Feb. 15th for the Feb. 17th delivery. Fine they found that.
Here's the next problem, the phone was no longer registered on their system because the original phone number was ported out to another carrier. So they had no active account to complete the swap/replacement..
Brand new replacement box was right in front of me within my grasp and almost in my hands. Alas I could not close the deal because of the technicality. But it goes to prove that it can be done, calmly.. Just have to find the right person. Someone mentioned once, you need to find the person that is there to help you get the issue resolved and doesn't take the exchange/replacement personally.
Again, I posted this because I know there are people that have this issue, and I know there will be others that will eventually suffer through this. For you and them to know that there is/are several solutions to a legitimate problem.
When I left the store, I told the manager and rep that I was thankful for them having taken the time to actually try to resolve my problem and really tried hard to look into the issue and find a solution. I understand I personally hit a stump as far as how much AT&T can do for "me". I let them know that in other stores they were not so willing and just brushed me off instantly dismissing me. And further putting blame on me having caused the damage, by pure speculation and assumption on their part that it must have been that I dropped it or somehow caused it by some sort of physical damage. They apologized.
My next step is Samsung Warranty Repair.

[Q] faulty screen? lots of green dots and specs

Something I noticed a few weeks ago...
When I have my screen brightness set on the higher end, I see these green dots.
With the power and screen both on, and when the display is trying to show black, I am finding these green dots and specs.
The size of these dots are tiny, probably a pixel or two at most. They are clustered mostly in the inner 50% of the centre of the screen.I have not counted them but we are talking about a few hundred.
At first I thought it was dust or something under the glass, but noticed that with the screen off, it cannot be seen, and when the screen is white background, it cannot be seen either.
It is more noticeable when watching videos. If you crank up the brightness during a scene at night, let's say, it is almost unbearable.
Does anybody else suffer this?
Faulty pixels, you can get it exchanged.
I used the dead pixel app from Google play, where it flicks through many monotone color screens, one of them being black.
And as explained before, I see the green pixels on the pure black screen.
The strange thing is, the research I have done on dead pixels, hot pixels or stuck pixels tells me a different description to what i am seeing.
I see no problems at all during other color screens of the dead pixel test...only the black.
Do I have a uniquely malfunctioning unit, it are others or there?
If you have some spare time on your hands, could you try searching for dead pixel test in Google play and try it out?
No faulty pixels on mine. I think I've seen only one or two other similar reports.
But no matter if the pixels are dead, hot or stuck, it's hardware fault and I'm sure you can get your tablet replaced without a problem.

This is the best I can do.
I used mx player, with max brightness.
When the brightness is set 3/4 of the way, it starts to become visible.
P.S. dumb question. How do people manage to paste pic direct in the posts?

Your screen also looks a bit distorted from looking at that playback bar. Yeah, you should just go ahead and get your tablet replaced, no hassle.
And wrap your image link between a
tag. Or just use the image button in the reply editor.
I noticed this problem too on my tablet but not to the same extent. Have you replaced yours?

Not yet, but I will. It has been a while since the original post, but I think it is getting worse. It has spread to a wider area. I contacted service center in Hong Kong and they told me that it should only take 3 hours to replace the lcd. So I will fly there nervy week and get it fixed.
Better to have it done while still under warranty..
I will report one done.

I sent mine in but they did nothing at the problem. They sent it back within two days claiming there is no problem and that they had updated firmware (which they could not have done since I did it before I sent it in lol...)
I called support again and they in return will call the repairshop asking what they actually did to my tablet. Most likely (if everything turns out ok) I will have to send it in again (which is still is annoying) and hopefully they will notice the problem this time.

Which County are you?
Not to defend Sony in any way, but it can be difficult to spot the problem when the screen brightness is anything below 50%.
I notice my problems in the following scenarios.
1) when I boot up the tablet, first the Sony logo. Here you can see it a bit because the background is black. But it gets a lot worse when moving into the next screen during 'Xperia'. Here the brightness is turned up, making it extremely noticeable.
2) when I am trying to watch a movie outside or in a bright place making my screen reflect, forcing me to turn the brightness up above 70% mark...
3) when I am using my tablet in pitch dark... Even in low brightness setting it can be noticed. Especially bad when the movie scene I am watching is for example night time and thus naturally contains a lot of black on the screen.
Anyway, thanks for your info. Before I submit my tablet, I will make sure the recipient sees and understand the problem and get that person to attach a note to describe it for the repair crew.
Judging by the lack of response to this thread, we seem to have encountered a rare problem.

Im from Sweden.
Yeah well I thought I was pretty clear on my instructions regarding how to notice the problem but you might be right. Mine isnt visible much when in use (apart from dark background with 100% brightness) and in dark enviroments.
Right now Im waiting for Sony Xperia support to call me telling me what the next step is. They wanted me to take a picture of them problem however its good to get a good print (picture is easy but printing it is harder ).
I have seen another thread regarding this at Sony Talk forum but that might be you aswell?

UPDATE
I flew into HK last night and went straight to Xperia care centre this morning.
I did not need to mention anything, I showed him the green dots (he called them dead pixels) and took it in immediately.
Judging by his reaction (his English was not very good) it was not the first time he had seen this on the Z2 tablet, and seemed to ask no further.
I showed receipt from purchase, he gave me a form to sign, and I was told to come back in 4 hours.
I came back after 4 hours, and everything was perfect.
I wasn't sure at the time, but it involves replacing the whole front display unit. The LCD screen and outer glass seem to be one piece, because everything was changed.
just a pain that the screen protector was gone with the old screen, so I needed to go and buy new, and that they had to factory reset... one click root and Titanium backup will come in handy...
All in all, my first ever Sony repair experience was professional, efficient and stress free.

Glad to hear that everything turned out ok for you. I have sent mine back and it will soon be at the repair shop (i can track the package). Hopefully they will be able to spot the problem this time otherwise I will be mad.. ;(.
I will update the thread with the result!
Let us know how it goes! I have the same issue, but being here in the United States it will be difficult to send it back to an HK service center....

I just happened to have a business trip to Hk coming up so I didn't need to send it in, but when I initially discovered the problem and called Sony Hk, they told me that sending it by registered mail or FedEx was an option.
The Chap on the phone told me to start an email correspondence with support team, who would then provide me with step by step instruction on how to send my tablet in.
For me at the time it was not an option, only because the receipt/proof of purchase was left in my office along with the box in Hk...
Since my tablet was repaired in 3 hours or so, if things go smoothly you might get your tablet back within the week (although it sucks that you have to pay courier 2-way)
Just wanted to say that the 2nd time I sent it for service they replaced the screen and now it looks ok!
I had to write a detailed description of the problem and I also added a printed picture which showed the dots, aswell as a link to an uploaded img. I guess that made them realize.
Lets hope it can stay like this now...
I just wanted to share about mine xperia z2 tablet.I had the same pixel problem, bought the tablet in abay Germany, got it to local service canter in Latvia. They got in touch with Sony and I got complete SWAP. For now it looks ok, I am usingthe new tablet for 2 weeks, lets see what will happen.
screen
Took mine in today for screen and constant reboots got a text saying it would be completed within five days but not what they were going to do so fingers crossed
