Phone really heats up when I play MC3/GTA III for around 10-15 minutes - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Hey all,
I've been noticing over the past few times I've been playing GTAIII and MC3 that the internal temp of my phone rises drastically, to a point where I can barely hold one side of my phone without having to let go every few seconds because it is so hot. From where the battery is positioned, I assumed it might be the GPU heating up, but other att gsII users said their batteries were heating up.
So,
1) Is anyone else experiencing these problems
2) If you are, has anything happened to your phone
I'm debating whether to trade it in for a new one, because I'm still under warranty.

Welcome to high performance electronics. If you push the CPU/GPU hard it's gonna heat up. It's like a desktop, if you do something CPU/GPU intensive it'll heat up. It's a simple byproduct of inefficiency.
As to batteries heating up, that could just be because they're close to the CPU/GPU. Batteries will warm up under high current draw as well.
Do you have a case on your phone? Those tend to trap heat in as well.

If your phone is overclocked, the processor will be running at the max clock you have set while playing the game, which is higher than what it's supposed to be running at, i.e., the stock clock. Prolonged usage at this higher-than-normal clock will generate excessive heat.

Yeah I don't play GTA3 anymore because of this kind of stuff. It doesn't get to the point where I have to literally move my hands because of the heat though. I simply don't like my phone getting even remotely warm. I'm just really anal about stuff like that. I fear that doing it will shorten the life of the device and I love this phone way too much to let that happen.
I'm sure it's designed to run at these higher temps since mine is completely stock with regards to cpu speed and voltage. If I can't play a game due to this, then I simply pass on the game. Same with my computer but I digress...

Download an app to check the temperature. Yes, ideally cooler the better, but the phone is designed to handle a certain amount of heat.
From what the op is describing, that is definitely too hot. Over time the components life can be shortened. But what you'll see first is your battery life going down, even quit working all together.
Underclock the processor. That can help keep the heat down. Even as low as 500mhz can pay many games. 800mhz should be plenty for most high end games.

I'm not overclocked, but yeah, same thing happens with me when I play MC3. I got scaredish since it got a bit too hot, seemed more hot than it was supposed to be.

download the diagnosis app and set it to check your batt temperature, if that gets above 45c I would be worried and think about underclocking/undervolting.

As long as your phone is cool enough to handle, don't worry. There's a lot more to it, but the electronics can take a lot more than most people credit them for. The battery is the most sensitive to temp, but so long as it's not for terribly long periods of time, you shouldn't even notice any additional degradation over the long run.

I have the Otterbox, which is probably the absolute worst case for heat efficiency

I agree! I baby this phone to every extent and I hate that feeling I get when it gets warm because I just assume the worst. I keep thinking the gpu is going to blow up or some extreme thing like that

If anyone's interested, I have pretty much eradicated the heat problem while also boosting battery life and conserving performance. This was done through setCpu: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505419
The problem was that apps were just running the processor like crazy on the 1.2 GHz speed setting, and it used a considerable amount of juice that was unnecessary, heating up the battery to a ridiculous amount.
But anyway, here's the profiles/voltage settings I use:
Main Governor: 200 MHz - 1200 MHz on demand
Profiles:
- Charging, 800 max, 200 min, ondemand, priority = 100
- Temp > 44.1 Celsius, 500 max, 200 min, conservative, priority = 100
(this is a conservative temperature, but most place the *dangerous* amount of heat at 50 degrees before battery life starts decreasing, the CPU/GPU components have solder that melts at 70 degrees)
-Screen Off, 500 max, 200 min, conservative, priority = 75
-Battery <25%, 800 max, 200 min, powersave, priority = 75
-In Call, 800 max, 200 min, conservative, priority = 50
Voltages:
(I was able to undervolt by 50-75 mV for each and still remain stable, these are tested btw)
1600 MHz - 1400 mV
1400 MHz - 1225 mV
1200 MHz - 1200 mV
1000 MHz - 1100 mV
800 MHz - 1025 mV
500 MHz - 950 mV
200 MHz - 875 mV
and that's it! It's working great, I don't have the heat issues I used to, now I can play graphically demanding games and the temp doesn't rise past ~42 degrees, pretty solid improvement. I also get 24-28 hours of battery life with 2-2.5 hours of screen on time per day.

No need to worry about this. That's nowaday phones designed to be. Just normal heat.

I agree that's how they're 'supposed' to be. But things mess up. AMD processors are designed to handle heat, but they are still known for getting too hot and damaging the graphics chip. Better safe than sorry.

[Q] what is your eris overclocked at?

I just wanted to know what everyones eris is oc to. I am currently overlocked at 806mhz, i cant go any higher than that.
Mines at 768 anything over that it overheats
mines at 768. I can go up to 806 if I wanted to but it sometimes causes issues so its better to stay at 768 to be safe at least for my eris and my fiances as well.

mine is very stable at 787, it can go to 806 but s**t starts to force close. I use cpuboost on smartass governor with minimum 787 maximum 787 with no sleep profile and surprisingly it doesnt get hot or get horrible battery life and im on it pretty much all day (except when im with my chick she will throw my phone out the window) lol
710. I haven't even tried going higher, my battery's reached 105-110F just at 710 (yeah I know just the battery, but still) so I'm too worried to try anything higher.
710 does me well.
On both my old and new Eris, I can go up to 806 but I set the max at 768.
Mine shutters and self destructs if I set it higher than 710
Edit: just for giggles I tried again. As soon as I touched 787 it restarted and would not restart till I flashed it again. ;-) oh well. I have liked this phone but can't wait till the Thunderbolt launches.

768 max is the highest it will go. Used to run it at 710 though recently I have found it is much happier at 768 on Smartass.

It ran about as smooth when I started running KaosFroyo back at about V34 at 710 max, though with Kaos busy with Gingerbread I hopped to a different rom until GB is a little more operational.
It does get a tad warm, though nothing I would fret about.
I just stick to 710-245 smartass
806 with colin's battery tweak.

There was a fellow over on Androidforums.com that liked the way his Eris ran at 806. That phone was dead within one week of his commencement of overclocking. (He may have set min=max, rather than mess with governors, I don't know all of the details).
When electronics break down, they do so for two reasons:
(1) intrinsic chemical processes such as corrosion, electromigration, whisker formation, etc. - these are all accelerated by heat.
(2) mechanical ruptures caused by prolonged mechanical strain or thermal cycling - both caused by heat.
In both cases, heat is the principal enemy.
Your Eris has no fan inside - just sayin.
While we're at it, have a look at the VDD_6 versus VDD_7 supply voltage definitions in this kernel code
If the voltage ramping is the same as in the note in the code (see "MSM7201A") a processor supply step-up occurs in the frequency table like this:
F >= 787 --> Vdd = 1.325 V
120 <= F <= 767 --> Vdd = 1.2V
Because the power dissipation per clock is proportional to Vdd^2, and the power rate is proportional to the clock frequency, the expected power dissipation ratio of 806 versus 710 is
(806/710)*(1.325/1.2)^2 = 1.384
You are burning up nearly 40% more power at 806 than at 710 - for a performance benefit of only (806/710) = 1.135 .... 14%

bftb, I don't think I've ever seen you post something that I haven't learned something from. Very interesting to see how little you gain going up to 806.
I usually stick around 710 too, but I bump up the min to 480 cause at 245 my phone takes too long to wake up when I get a call.
I decided to set my max at 528 today just for kicks, and I was surprised to see that it actually still felt kinda snappy. Not quite as smooth as with 710, but definitely usable for me.
first of all I dont feel 14% is a small amount when pushing the envelope as we are trying to do with the eris. In any hobby I've been in people go thru great lengths and spend all kinds of money and time for 10% improvements much less 14%. Actually more than I expected and makes me feel alot better about going from stock 528 to 768.
Now having made that argument I'm going to turn around and rubuke myself because even if there is an actual verifiable 30%+ improvement going from 528 to 786 it means nothing to me if I cant feel any difference in the contexts of a phone and I just cant tell much difference. Its not like a car in which it may feel the same to you but you win a race you would have lost before. With a phone subjective improvements experienced by the user is all that really matters. Many a time I've flashed, forgot to set OC and later THOUGHT I was overclocked or overclocked higher only to realize I've been using the phone without doing so. Never ONCE has it been because I thought "man this is slow, maybe I forgot to overclock". Always the other way: "man I thought this thing was overclocked and I'm running stock speeds". that alone tells me what I need to know about overclocking (yet I overclock to my phones stable max of 768 anyway. go figure).
i keep it at 710/245. its not a noticeable difference to me when i clock it above 710. however, when i put it back down to 528 it is noticeably more sluggish (the only exception to this being KGB or vanilla 2.1).
710 here. I can go up to 767 with a certain set up...
I seem to have one of the weaker Eris'. But 710 is fine for me!

Phone too hot to touch after 5 minutes of gaming.

Hi all, running lite'ning rom 1.4 and just played order and chaos for 5 minutes and the phone became too hot to touch! Surely this shouldn't be right, i mean what the hell! Anyone else have this?

Actually yes,many people have this.It's the CPU overheating.Beware,it doesn't get hotter than other CPUs on the market,but heat disipation on the GS2 is minimal as the phone is so thin.
The only thing you can try is lowering the CPU clock to 1000Mhz or even 800Mhz when gaming.You can even boost your GPU to 400Mhz up from 267Mhz and don't overheat then.There will also be no performance hit as games run mainly on the GPU and two cores running at 1GHz are more than enough to handle the background.
I havent noticed the phone getting super hot as some people have noted. I do notice that it does get a lot hotter if its plugged in and charging while playing a game. Are you by chance charging while playing? If so, I'd try and play while not charging to see if it gets really hot still.
No this isnt while charging and it literally was 5 minutes of playing! How do I change the cpu and gpu speeds safetly?
it also depends on the game itself, many of them are just poorly programmed

I dont have an SGS2 yet but your statement has a total flaw, if games mainly use the GPU then there should be zero need to underclock the CPU.

Have you ever seen anything running on the GPU ONLY?What I mean is that the GPU processes the graphics,which are important when playing a game.The CPU takes on other tasks,like opponent's AI(artificial intelligence),background and foreground code running and many other things.Sound maybe?All these things keep the CPU running at 100% for no reason.Lower the clock and voila!
Check first before you try to say I'm wrong next time.I don't usually say bullsh!t with such things.

Safe overclocking temps SGP5

I have my SGP5 overclocked to 1.5ghz at the moment via Tegrak. Everything is running smoothly but the spot on the back where the CPU is gets warm to the touch. Not hot or anything, but obviously warm.
Before I had it overclocked to 1.45ghz and it stayed a lot cooler, but to get to 1.5 I had to bump the core voltage to 1.35v. I also have the up-threshold set to 35% so it spends a good amount of time at max speed.
Since these things don't have CPU temp monitoring, how do you tell when it's too hot? My battery temp never goes much over 80*F, so that doesn't seem like a good indicator of anything.
Sitting here playing music with Mufin my IR temp gun reads a max of 100*F on the back of the case over the CPU. Battery temp is reading 77*. Is that too warm? How much of a temp differential can there be between the outside of the case and the CPU itself?
I'm no noob to overclocking PCs, but this is my first Android device so I don't really know it's limits as clearly.
Any help would be mucho appreciated!

So I just pulled the back cover off it. Running the same program for 10-15mins the CPU never exceeded 82.5*F which is well within safe limits imo.
I guess that goes to show how poor the cooling is in one of these things with the back cover on. I'm going to keep running 1.5ghz and report any issues. The difference in smoothness between 1.4 and 1.5ghz is pretty dramatic.. web browsing is very very smooth now. I probably won't be going any higher than 1.5, but for now it seems safe.

Is there any major danger at this clock speed with On-Demand on? I mean, it'll only use 1.5GHz if it needs it right?

Ondemand from my understanding, scales processor speed using the values in the up/down (I believe System Tuner refers to down as "powersave bias") threshold. From my experience it's the best governor to use as far as customizing it easily and getting it to respond well.
Whatever you set the up-threshold to, when CPU load exceeds that value it bumps the speed up to the next "level" and ending in full speed. Then when CPU load falls below the down-threshold, it scales it back down to the next lowest level, so on and so-forth. You can also adjust the sampling rate too - lower frequency means it checks the CPU load more frequently and essentially makes the governor more responsive.
When I set mine to 35%, almost any program aside from stuff sitting almost completely idle will trip the CPU to hit 1.5ghz. This makes everything real responsive and may use more battery.. but I prefer having a more responsive device. You can also adjust the up-threshold to a higher number to try to lower temps and extend battery life. You can really play around with it to suit your needs, there's not really anything to screw up there.
There shouldn't be any danger using it with the ondemand.. but since I haven't tested this for more than a few days right now just keep an eye on temps (especially while playing games) and watch out for any "stuttering" out of the blue. Mine gets warm but nothing excessive. You'll be able to feel it on the back between the speakers.
I have to say though, even running such a high clock speed I'm not really seeing any negative effect on battery life so far.

No just kidding, but seriously. There is a risk of overheating a hardware and 'destroying' it, there should be!

Well of course there's always some risk in overclocking! Especially when you don't know what you're doing.
As far as using one governor or another though.. when it comes down to it there shouldn't be a huge difference.

Cause the way I see it is if the cpu is constantly being clocked down/up for instance, when my screen is off I have it so that cpu is at about 400mhz and when the screen comes on it boosts back up to anywhere between 1200 and max
If you're driving, and you slow when down to say 30mph and slam on the gas to get up to 100mph instead of steadily getting there, you're going to use a lot more gas. So if it is the same with the phone, aren't I using more battery life than saving?

I'm not entirely sure, but with your example, doesn't that depend how long you're going 30 or how long your screen is off at a crack? If you turn on your screen for 10 minutes for every 20 it's off, I think it would save your battery more in the long run.
You use more gas in the car analogy as you have to overcome a ton or so of mass driving at 30 mph. Changing clock speeds faces no such resistance, so it won't be the same with the phone.
yes, the acceleration doesn't really affect the drain. the fact you're running at a higher clock speed is the drain. you can adjust your steps and max speed, thus saving a little bit of battery. undervolting can help to, but the cpu usually draws so little power that the savings may go unnoticed.

Some phones are great to take camping because if you play Asphalt 8 long enough, the back warms up to the ideal temperature that can bake bread. Rate this thread to express the extent to which the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ stays cool under extended heavy use. A higher rating indicates that even when playing strenuous games for long periods of time, the phone doesn't get uncomfortably warm.

The heat pipe system in it works very well... this phone should never run hot. If it does, something is wrong.
Mine needed extensive optimization to run cool... it's my favorite phone now. Like having a laptop in my palm. Avoid "upgrading" to Q, it's a nightmare.

All phones with good cpu/gpu get hot when gaming for long time.
There is not any thing wrong with that.
Exynos phones get very hot ingame, cpu temp can go up to 70c.
If your note 10 don't get warm after 1h asphalt 8 there is something wrong with it like low fps and or trottle.
Batteri temp in heavy game around 40c
Cpu temp in heavy game (Exynos chip) 60c-70c.
Your phone will be warm..

Talking about unwarranted running hot. dah.
The hottest my phone has reached playing games was 45°c. But it mostly sits at 43°c when gaming. Is that good?

107 F is too hot*. This isn't a desktop cpu; running an LI battery this hot will greatly diminish its lifespan.
Some of the CPU heat plus the extra current drain heat the LI bat up. I never let my battery temp exceed 103 F when in use or 100 F during a charge. >85 during charging is better.
Put a damp rag around it or on the backside if in use to cool it if the ambient temp is too high...
*43 C is fine for CPU temp as long as the battery isn't getting baked. F is easier for real world temp measurement.
My cpu and chips are running at about 104 F while the battery is at 95F; the ambient temp is about 90 F, acceptable.
This with a light cpu load with brightness at about 40%
For heavy cpu usage at these temps for more than 10 minutes would drive the battery temp unexceptably high without external cooling.
Monitor the battery temp. Lol, if the phone feels very warm/hot it's damp rag or shutdown time.
F is easier for"real world" ? F are only used in ONE country! Which, by no means equals ALL the world, science, real science uses metric system

The Fahrenheit scale is centered around the temperature zone most used by humans.
A 10° F isn't too much a of a change but modest amount.
A 10° C change is huge.
It's ackward to use in real life... suffer.

Good thing you don't have the Exynos version.
The idle cpu temp is around 50c with about 20-25c room temp.
What program to you monitor cpu and chips with?

122 F is really hot for a cell phone... a very expensive hand warmer. When a phone feels hot; it's already too hot. This will greatly shorten LI life especially if above a 90% charge.
Current drain* at idle with 50% brightness level should be below 220 ma. Typical idle current on this one averages at 140-200 ma.
If it's running >400 ma, something's running in the background sucking the life out of it.
I use different temp apps. Been playing with the Gitlab one.
It's 26.6C (80 F) ambient temp here and the CPU is averaging about 35.5 C (96 F) as I'm using the Note.
Battery temp is the only one I need to really watch.
I monitor that and battery current drain.

If you pause the video when he start antutu you can se the cpu temp of the s20 ultra (about 56c without any massive load).
My old s8 with exynos got warm and it worked just fine for 2 years, sure i lost a few % on the batteri.
After 2 years just get a new batteri and enjoy.
I know snappdragon is running mutch cooler, but make sure you get a app that show the right temp. 35c in a 26.6C room sounds like idle temp at best.

For you Fahrenheit may sound "logical" as you grew up with it. For us - the rest of the world - we grew up with Celsius. We don't need a scale "centered around a temp zone used by humans", we know what effect a 10°C drop in temperature has on us...nothing ackward about it.

Unlike the metric system of temperature measurement it is uniquely centered in a range where most living occurs... 96.8° is a better way to index human body temp. One degree matters.

At 96° ambient I'm seeing the CPU, GPU typically going between 102-118 F depending on usage.
Browsing it's running between 100-102 F
Internet vid jumps to about 114 F at this ambient temp.
Obviously higher for cpu/gpu intense apks, haven't benchmark it yet with this running.
The battery is at 96.8 F and typically runs cooler.
The heat pipe seem to work well; dissipates heat rapidly from the cpu and helps keep the battery temp down.
