Padphone+ transformer dock - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

This would be suck a cool thing it would be the ultra transformer! A phone that transforms into a tablet that then turns into a laptop!
This would be the best!
One data plan one device!
You could probably get like 24 hours of battery using the tablet and dock battery! This would be the coolest thing if asus made that!

I don't know why you have to put exclamation points after every sentence!
But, yeah, I was watching some video on the Padphone, and I'll be damned if the tablet part doesn't have what looks suspiciously like the same docking connectors as are on the Prime. And it's certainly made thin enough on the bottom to fit, from all appearances.
I doubt that Sprint would pick up the phone, which makes it pretty much worthless to me. But if they did, and it ran a Tegra 3, and the screen on the pad portion is the same Super IPS+ as the Prime... If all of that turned out to be true, I'd sell the prime and get this sucker in a heartbeat.

its been confirmed the padfone works with the OG dock.

Really? Wow, thanks, hadn't seen that.
Crazy. I still have my OG Transformer and dock. Maybe I should hang on to the dock just in case...

In the future, if there is a second generation PadPhone (fixing up problems the first gen will probably have ), I'll probably end up with that combo. Phone docks into tablet docks into keyboard? It's pretty much the ultra mobility.

Confirmed by the Asus rep.
I almost got a Note, but then Sammy made it such a PIA to connect a hard drive that I passed. Then when I saw the shell of the Padfone and didn't see a USB port, I put in an order for the Note. Then I saw this video and canceled my order for the Note.
Still don't know anything, but since it supports the keyboard (which I already have) and that has USB ports, I can almost assume it will behave like the transformer and be good to hard drives. Just hope the rumors of Kal El are true. Guess we'll find out in a month.

I hope at&t doesn't botch this like they did my atrix 4g.....I opted out of the dock to keep my data plan unlimited. Ill keep my Asus prime if they do the duel data teathering junk again...it was uncool

So what's the big deal with this? Lol. Its a nice looking phone n that's about it. Its cool that it'll use same connector bit this is no tablet replacement like some making it sound. Plus Asus messed up design by adding extra capacitive buttons not even needed. with ICS, it was Androids intentions for phones n devices to get rid of capacitive buttons n make more use of permanent on-screen ones. That could be extra screen real estate used in that area instead of useless clones of on-screen tabs. If this phone has a screen as big as the galaxy note then it might be something. Other than that, looks n operates just like any other phone. The dock thing is nothing new as Atrix had that also n didn't do to well, as far as dock goes. Now if someone has an OG transformer n dock already, n no prime, then it might be cool. Haven't seen anything new or groundbreaking from that YouTube video. Looks well built though, ill admit.

And appearantly one has to have a phone in it to actually make it work, which I really don't like. Neh... not too fond of it.
Wifi hotspot works good enough for me.

The phone was designed pre-ICS and is still prototype hardware subject to change (with the capacitive buttons most likely being removed)

It is almost like any other phone but the difference is that it powers an Android tablet and netbook too! Everything consolidated into one device simplifies things for some people

That´s the device I have been waiting for since I first read about it.
I so hope Asus doesn´t screw this one up.

Search up the KT Spider and you'll see the same concept but they have more options. Like a laptop dock, tablet dock and a game dock sorry of like a PSP. Korea Telecom I think is the one who introduced the concept last year.

It would. But considering the fact how long this device has been in development it would be a big surprise if they manage to switch over to the Prime dock.
(Assuming that it is actually true what that guy said.)

But this hasn´t been released, either or has it?
The last time I checked it hasn´t and it was pretty clear it wouldn´t come to Europe.

How much do you guys think it will cost? And what do you think the us data plans will be like?

I don´t where, but I read that an Asus rep. said the Pafone (phone + tablet-dock) won´t be as expensive as an average phone + tablet combo.
So, my guess would be something around 900€.

If the tablet part isnt like 100 or 150 bucks idk if many would sell..
Im thinkjng 200 for phone on contract and 150 for tab 150 for dock

I wouldn't trust that rep, I don't think he understood the question correctly.
He said the same adaptor and same cable, nothing about connecting the padfone to the docking station. I do believe that it will be able to connect to a dock, but its not very likely to be the tf101 dock.

Well, welcome! I loved the Prime, and found the vibrator issue to be very minor while I waited a month for Amazon to get me another... Absolutely HATED the original Galaxy S (Vibrant), but the SII looks pretty nice... Not sure I can shy back away from HTC at this point though, lol
Ordered mine on Christmas night from BB.com. Received it on the 27th. Got the dock from the same place about 2 weeks later. love them both.
Galaxy s2 is hands down the best phone i have ever had. It is rooted and is as smooth as silk. I consistantly get quadrant scores over 5000

mine is also amazing. Slight backlight bleed which is only noticeable at boot us the only thing i have to complain about, and thats only coz i was looking out for it.
Battery life is amazing, speed is amazing, screen is amazing, dock is amazing. U was charging my gnex using a usb cable plugged into the dock! Flipping awesome! I discover more and more new stuff to do with this thing every day! Gonna try a ps3 controller in it next.
The only way to actually test the GPS is to completely disable wifi. Google uses all wifi networks in range to find a location. Google has mapped almost every wifi-network on the planet, and even if you just disconnect from your own, it will still use the wifi names around you to find location, even if you arent connected. So to test GPS, disable wifi completely. Then we will see...

Not even you, or people with similar posts 'got a good one'.. you and people like you just have a VERY high threshold for putting up with garbage.. on side by side tests your tablet will be the same as what others call 'broken'...
One man's 'fine' is another man's 'broken'.
Those of us who won't put up with shoddy crap, KNOW how broken the TFP is.. people who say it's fine are just trying to justify their purchase to themselves.. no-one likes to think they have been screwed, but there are some who will go to unreasonable lengths to convince themselves and everyone else that 'their's is fine'.. when it certainly isn't.
How any times have you read a post saying, 'yeah, well that's broken, and that doesn't work very well, and that's not up to scratch'.. then finish the post, I loooove Asus... that's not a reasonable action for a person to take.. that's pure self deception.
Install this, disable Wi-Fi, run the program and post a screenshot when you get a fix.

Really like the positive vibe you bring over here..
For what it's worth the Transformer Prime is usable, it just has a few drawbacks.
and you're only going to find them once you heavily began to use some of it's components that has those defects.
but they can go unnoticed if you're a light end user.
Come to think of it, this across the board on any electronic device. oh well. I still think this keyboard dock sort of stinks at times.
Although it's typing quite normal right now as I make this post. No random type cursor jumps.
I'm already on my third unit and this one again has massive screen bleed, creaking screen and stuck pixels I wish I had a golden ticket aswell.
aren't the screen bleeds common because the device uses the cheaper "Edge LED" LCD, vs the more expensive "Backlit LED" LCD? or am I thinking of ghosting.
I'm not much of a screen guru so I think I'm my own light user case as far as detecting any screen problems. So right now, I feel like I have a golden ticket as far as that category goes.

I don't feel like im putting up with garbage or trying to justify my purchase. I've used it for a week now and I still have another week until BestBuy won't let me return it for full price. So how broken is the TFP? As far as I am concerned, GPS is the only known issue.
In my opinion, tablets are not laptop replacement yet, maybe in the future but not yet. When tablets have 500GB or more of storage, 1GB or more of dedicated video card, 4 GB or more of RAM and a Core I5 or better of CPU then you can talk about heavy use. In the meantime they are for light use.
So I guess I'm lucky too. In my case I don't have any of the mentioned problems. I don't know about the GPS because really I don't use it. I had the Galaxy 10.1 and never used the GPS neither, for that I use my SGSII. I sold the Galaxy 10.1 and bought the TP and after a week of using the TP I'm very happy.

IMO tablets are no different than laptops and desktop computers, there's high and lows on specs in both areas. I think the Transformer Prime with it's pricing and size would fall into the mid-tier range tablet.
the higher end tablets often 12" or larger are much more comparable to laptops. While the Prime is more like a netbook.
Samsung Series 7 Slate
HP TouchSmart Tm2T
ASUS Eee Slate EP121
IBM ThinkPad X220
DELL Latitude XT3
and those tablets aren't doing so well since they cost too much, their Windows OS is not touch optimized like Android/iOS and they offer abysmal battery life, because there hardware is not energy efficient as the mobile CPUs in Android/iOS tablets.
But most of my gripes with the TFP are software related at best, I just think the default browser and the options ICS have on the Prime for the keyboad dock could be better, and the browser interface could be much more optimized had it been designed better. This is not a harp on the hardware, but more a harp on the software.
Now I'm actually hoping ASUS will offer an optional Windows 8 upgrade for it's tablets when Microsoft finally get their act together and produce Tegra 3 based Windows 8.
Coming from an iPad 2, the Transformer Prime has exceeded my expectations for a tablet. Get a gps lock, wifi works fine...great experience. Couldn't be happier.

Tempted to wait for the next tablet?

Just wondering what people think of the Padfone?
I might be late to this (most probably am), however i Just saw a few reviews about the padfone and now it looks very tempting to wait for it instead of ordering the Prime tomorrow.
I heard they'll be announcing it properly at the MWC...I guess it'll be 2 months after that, so around the tf700 time.
What do people think? Is it a gimmick that wouldn't get used? or something that could have a lot of potential?

Nice one Asus.
But not tempted, you can always wait for the next best thing. I also wonder if you can utilize this padfone fully without a phone in it.
I have more questions about this thing than I do answers, such as:
1. What carriers will support the phone? If it's not available on Sprint, it's a moot point for me.
2. Does the tablet support a dock? I've seen rumors that it will support the original Transformer dock, but no confirmation. If it doesn't, then it's also moot for me--I wouldn't get a tablet without an integrated keyboard dock.
3. Not to be unkind towards ASUS (I think there's too much of that going around already), but they've struggled making the Prime a reliable and consistent product so far. I wonder if they'll be better at making this thing, given that it's another order of magnitude more complex.

1) It will probably be sold as an unlocked sim card device!
2) it will dock! If you look on one video i watched the had a battery widget that showed phone tablet and dock battery life on it... And you can see the dock connectors on it!
But it's really cool a phone that docks in a tablet that docks in a keyboard! You could probably get like 24 hours of battery for the phone on 4g
3) what's complex about it it uses a micro hdmi to display the image to the tablet and a micro usb to charge the phone and communicate the touch portion of it... It's basically just a glorified touchscreen monitor
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Over the top IMHO, is the tablet just a case and phone screen enlarger, or are they 2 devices who can work together when needed and fully functional when separate?
I praise the courage of the concept, yet I don't feel engaged by it, others may disagree...
Cheers

Not to be overly harsh, a few months ago I'd have asked, "What's so complex about the Prime?" I never would have expected so many build and design issues. Here we have a phone that has to sit inside a tablet and:
1. Have everything fit well, with no issues with tolerance. If some part is a tiny bit off, then the phone doesn't fit, or the cover doesn't close, or a connector abrades against a port and bends/breaks something, etc.
2. The phone sites inside the tablet. Yet, it provides all radio functionality (cell, GPS, wifi, Bluetooth). If the Prime has radio issues, imagine what could happen with this thing. And no, I don't think it's so easy to say, "Well, they just shouldn't use an all-metal back." The whole thing needs to be carefully design to ensure that all radios perform well.
I'm not saying ASUS absolutely can't design and manufacture this thing well, but after the Prime, I do have my doubts. Do note that I've had six Primes so far, and every single one has had a defect significant enough to warrant a replacement. So, maybe I'm a bit jaded.
Everyone always talking about this show or next show worth waiting for. Lol. People said same thing about one that just passed, and basically was a fail. As far as showing anything to beat the prime out. Asus already said it'll be June at the earliest when you will see the TF-700. Once people get that, they will be in for a big surprise. AROUND the same time or afterwards is when the next upgrade to tegra3 chip will be announced, Kal El+, or they might just jump to next one and forget the refresh. Its always about waiting for the next best thing. Of you do then you'll be waiting forever. Lmao
Plus what does this thread have to do with Prime?

yeah..lmfao. I'm just happy a got a great working Prime from 12/22. I use this thing so much its crazy. I used my Ipad the other day, it didn't even feel right anymore. felt bulky n heavy n alot slower than my prime. can't lie, I am interested to see what the competition will bring.
These combo thingies sound cool until somebody actually tries to use one. To wit the Moto Atrix and the stillborn Palm Foleo.
The Panasonic WiGig demo (Engadget blurb) looks much more versatile and practical. No need for proprietary phone & dock. Xmit module in phone + rcv module in laptop/tablet/TV = 60fps fullHD remote access or dumb display.
Nice concept, but I already have a good Android phone (Galaxy Nexus).
Why would I want one?
As for now, I won't go with Prime ... too much issues ... random built quality ... pogo pins will wear out (not tight) sooner or later ... flawed design ...
TF700 would be much better option, but I need to wait a month or two for real review and teardown, learning from Prime debacles ...
Or probably waiting other brand like Samsung upcoming 11.6" , that is interesting.
Yeah, we can wait and wait and wait ... but at this moment, I won't "force" my-self to accept mediocre/dodgy products.
MWC is just less than 1 month anyway ...
And I can still live my life without tablet! Galaxy Nexus serves me well enough

I agree, this is exactly what I think ! Why would we buy an unfinished product ? I can live with no GPS, but not with a bad WIFI reception. It's so stupid to pay 700€ for a MOBILE device which would not allow me to connect to a WIFI router in hotels/restaurants unless I'm sticked to it ...
A lot of people say "The TF700 solved these problems, let's wait for it", but I only partially agree :
- this is said by Asus, but can we still believe them ? I am not confident anymore in the build quality of Asus. We already had problems with the TF101 and other laptops / netbooks made by Asus.
- Even if the TF700 works very well, the high 1080p resolution will let it work slower than the "normal" 1280x800 TF201 resolution. We still need to know if it will be fast enough for everything and everyone (we all want our tablet to be as fast as possible, right ?)
- Asus will not be the only Tegra 3 maker in the next months : every other brands will sell their own Tegra 3 tablets, beginning in April with Acer (A510). And there will be new comers like HTC and Lenovo (the lenovo tab will have a Tegra 3 running at 1.6 GHZ and 2Go of RAM !).
Asus wanted to be the first one to sell a Tegra 3 tablet, but they did it too fast, now we have to use an unfinished product and use tricks like pinching the back cover to let it work as it should (and still, even with this trick it works better but not really as it should)... Is this serious ???
So I will now wait for other brands "Tegra 3" tablets, I'm done with Asus.

Prime a good investment??

So next month I'm going to mwc and need to be blogging and writing word documents, I can't be bothered to take a heavy mbp so I was thinking of buying the transformer ..
Good investment guys? Also is it as nice to hold as the ipad is?
Thanks

As nice to hold? Go to a store and try... How can we decide how it holds for you?!
And no, not a good investment in the sense that it'll prolly decrease in value within months... But yeah, it's still a great tablet and combined with the dock suitable for the things you want just fine. Dunno about how suitable it is for extensive working like that.
Awesome tablet bro but would never call a newly released gadget a good investment, cash wise that is ;#)
Yeah bad wording on my behalf.. I've ordered one anyway! Only reason I asked about hololding was the old transformer had sharp edges

No, terrible investment.
But great toy =)
Picked one up saturday myself. No complaints so far. FYI Office Depot has some Docks / Keyboards in stock, if you consider picking one up. Let us know what series you got and if there are any issues..

It is definitely a good investment as long as you get the keyboard. This is the main feature, in my opinion, that puts the Prime ahead of any other tablet out there (including the iPad). The SwiftKey X keyboard is great when the keyboard dock is not attached, however there a few bugs with SwiftKey and some Android apps out there (Polaris Office is virtually unusable when using SwiftKey X to as your keyboard).
I had the Prime for a week and a half before I could finally find the keyboard dock and I can say it is truly a great experience with the dock. Even without the dock the thing is amazing but the full sized keyboard, gesture enabled track pad, USB port, extra battery and SD card slot really turn the tablet into a true 'laptop' like experience. The keyboard and track pad are very responsive as well, which was something I was worried about as I have used cheap netbooks/laptops before where the track pads were terrible and the keyboards had a noticeable lag. I have had a few random reboots which would be my only complaint, so if you play games or are writing a long document be sure to save often just in case.
As far as the thing dropping in price after a few months, I do not think this is going to happen. ASUS has stated that the Prime is going to be sold along side the TF701 and the 701 is going to be marketed as the step up model. If you look at the original Transformer that was launched 10 months ago, it is still being sold for 450 bucks (for the 32GB version). Sure, over time the Prime will drop in price but I don't think that is going to be anytime soon.
Yeah a TFP + dock + mouse = great for blogging, assuming you'll be blogging directly onto the website.
As for word documents, you may have to buy an office suite app. It comes with Polaris Office, which is decent, but I like OfficeSuite Pro, although I don't think either has a spell checker...
I think my galaxy note and transformer prime will do me fine its coming tomorrow!

That's pretty much the configuration i want. gNote + Asus Prime w/ keyboard.
Let us know how it works for you. I have the Note already, waiting for the Prime to deliver in a few days.
Hopefully that combo will convince me to get rid of the Macbook Air
I love my note but also plan to use the prime at work when training staff etc.. Need portability with Internet access and documents it seems perfect!

Transformer Prime for a non-gamer?

Heres the deal, i already own a Transformer Prime & love it. My GF is due for a tablet upgrade. I am debating on getting her a Prime & a dock. The versatility is great with the Prime & i think she would enjoy it. However.... She is not gonna play any 3D games to prob take advantage of the Tegra 3. But she does like to play old school NES games on my Prime from time to time, does that rhyme? Lol.
Now do you think its worth the $650 for the Prime and the dock for her? Basically she wants something that is fast on web browsing and a smooth UI "ice cream sandwhich". And like me she enjoy's latest and greatest.
Or should i just get her something like a iPad 3. Now Apple makes great products but just too closed source for me and i get very bored with them. I am not sure which way to go. I mean with the iPad i would save $150. I am a firm believer that if you get the Prime the docks is a must! To take full advantage of how its intended to be used.
Best buy has the galaxy tab 10.1 for $399. But the extra $100 seems like a logical upgrade for the Prime or iPad 3 for her. The upside for me if i got her a iPad 3 i would gain a super awesome direct TV remote and guide that is on the itunes store. Not sure why Android market has not gotten this yet.
Thoughts?
How much does your g/f care?
I know plenty of girls that would blow me for a Kindle Fire. None of them even know what a Prime is.
prime has best value and versatility out of any tablet with the dock combo. nothing else compares. plus the extra battery life added is priceless. it all depends on how much you want to spend. if you want something lower priced, might as well go with an OG transformer n dock. if you want the extra power that can be used at will, go with the prime. if you want something with very limited features, simple to use, and closed ecosystem, then ipad3 is what you want.

Lol tha's hilarious. Basically she cares enough that she lets me buy all my expensive gadgets. So she likes to feel like she has a good device for the most part. Plus she likes me to Root/rom & all that good stuff for her too.

I think i am gonna go with the Prime for her. I already have a dock for mine so we can obviously share. I don't always have mine docked and i am sure for the most part she will use her's without the dock. So its a win win & save the extra $150.

That would be my recommendation. No leading edge tablet is going to cost less than $500 so you might as well get here a Prime if you want to stay with Android. Since she doesn't have a dock now, I would want on buying her one until she decides she really needs one and like you have said you can always share.
However. If you can wait a few months to get her a new tablet. You could upgrade yourself to the Transformer Pad Infinity (TF700, or whatever they are calling it these days) and give your GF your "old" Prime. You could also give her your dock since I don't think the Infinity is compatible with the Prime's dock.
If you don't want to spend that much money, and can still wait a few months, you could get the Transformer Pad (TP300), which is a slightly (very slightly) scaled back TF Prime intended to replace the TF101 as the budget tablet offering. These will start @$400 for the 16GB model and will have a plastic back so GPS and WiFi should be improved over those built into the Prime.
Ummmm, The DirectTV remote is on the Market. I use it all the time.........
Dude i wanna be your girlfriend

I'd say enough to get her a TP, which to me and others is the best
This ISN'T my Transformer Prime
should be plenty of other things that can be useful with the prime's power other than just games.

I love it, I don't really play games but I love knowing I have the power if I need it....I don't have a dock yet but I don't need it right now....it's one of the best devices I have ever owned

You could get her the TF101 with dock for only $50 than the TF201 (Prime) without dock.
If she's not going to do a lot of gaming and stuff this would most likely be more than enough.. still completely blows away the iPad 2 IMO.
You can check Craigslist too.. there are some people selling the TF101 WITH dock for about $400 in my area.

[Q] Best TF201 Replacement

Well, I may have hit the jackpot last night. My wife said she would like to have a tablet for doing simple stuff like checking her email and lite web surfing without having to haul out her laptop. She then suggests that she really likes my Prime and maybe she could use that and I could get a new one
...Ding, ding, ding, ding....jackpot! Of course I'm having a charging issue with it at the moment so all of this depends on making that work...but thats a separate issue.
The thing is now I have to decide what to get for me to replace the prime and I actually really like my prime. What I love about the prime largely comes from the keyboard dock. Besides the physical keyboard which is a must for me:
1. Extra battery in the dock
2. SD card slot in the dock.
3. USB port in the dock. I use all kinds of things here. USB flash drives, USB wired ethernet, external hard drives, USB input devices, and even multiple devices at the same time with a USB mini hub.
By Prime is unlocked and running Hairy Bean 2.3.1. So I want somthing new that gives me all that functionality I get from the ASUS keyboard dock, is running at least Android 4.2 out of the box, and has the potential to root, unlock and custom ROM later (probably after the warranty expires).
Ideas?

I wouldn't touch Asus tablets again after the mess they made of the Prime.
I know you want a dock so this doesn't really apply but if I was buying a new tablet any time soon I would probably get the new Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition. The specs look great and I like the s-pen and the multitasking.
http://www.samsung.com/global/microsite/2014galaxynote10.1/
I suggest Nexus 10, but it has no dock as far as i know.
the only tablets with propitiatory docks are:
1. asus transformer series
2. iPad (BT though)
3. Microsoft surface (LAGGY)
4. Windows tablets (e.g. the lenovo yoga, dell XPS, sony ,etc)
personally, i would get
ONE: Asus PadFone just cause its technically the only tablet you can make 2/3G calls with
(and the asus padfone has 3 "transformable" states [phone --> tablet --> laptop/ultrabook)
PRICE: 1000
TWO Razer Edge PRO, its windows based, and we're android users, but that I7 core and dedicated grpahics is just amazing
PRICE: 1000-3000
I believe HP has just announced a new android tablet with a detachable keyboard as well. I think it is sporting a tegra 4 chip.

Not the TF700?
woot.com (and its various woot-ettes) have been running sales on TF300s and TF700s of late. They only do one item per day, but they have like ten thousand sites now, so you might get lucky.

Thanks for all the replies. I was looking hard at the HP with Android and the Tegra 4. Specs wise it looks really good. But....my wife ended up deciding she wanted a Windows based tablet. Not RT but a full Windows. So she ended up buying an HP Envy X2 which is really pretty nice (though a bit pricey at $619 on Amazon). I actually kind of like the thing though...she doesn't much like it now that she has it. Doesn't like Windows 8 at all even though we had been over it using a Surface Pro I have for work. Soooooo, today I downloaded Stardock's Start 8 which puts the Windows 7 start menu back where it belongs and lets you start directly to the desktop where most of her work is anyway. Basically I made it look as much like Windows 7 as I could without actually installing Windows 7.
Oh well. Looks like I'm sticking with my Prime for the foreseeable future. Which actually isn't a bad thing. I've got the latest and greatest from flumpster on there (HB 2.31) and it really works better than ever...actually it works the way Asus should have made it work in the first place. So, not a bad thing at all other than that I spent $619 on something my wife doesn't really like (hope she likes it better when she gets home today and sees how I Windows 7ized it for her).

How can you call a $600 tablet a "replacement" for a tf201? You can buy three tf201s for that and have a lot of change left over. I hate it when people compare the advantages of a $600 item with one that can be had for well under $200. Would you talk about Jaguars when looking for a Chevy replacement?

It depends if you was comparing a brand new Chevy to a Jaguar coming to the end of its life cycle.
I hate it when people make analogies and try to make it suit their need. Do you think the Prime was under $200 when brand new?

BS. A 1960's Jag is still worth far more than a Chevy that's being "replaced". (Obviosly the Chevy isn't new either.) And anyone who paid the original price for a tf201 has probably replaced it long ago. There are new 10" tab;ets hitting the market regularly that sell for under $300.
But personally, I'm perfectly happy with my tf201. It is running Android 4.3, gets very good battery life and has an Antu benchmark of 14,562. You'd have a hard time finding a brand new tablet for under $400 that could match those specs.

Are you still trying to make that analogy work ?
I paid original price for the tf201 and still have it and so do many others. There has been nothing until now that has really made me want to upgrade.
When people replace things it doesn't have to be the same value as what the old one is worth. I'm pretty sure he can spend what he wants.

Agree completely. Comparing what I could pay now for a two year old item with what a brand new one costs, doesn't make any sense. You basically have to compare what I originally paid for the Prime, new VS what I would pay today to get a similar new item. I just pulled up my Amazon.Com order for when I originally got my Prime to refresh my memory. Here was what was on it:
Prime: $474.99
Keyboard dock: $110.86
Case: $17.95
32GB Micro SD: $19.49
Shipping: $15.96
Total: $639.25 and I remember thinking I was getting a reasonably good deal at the time.
Take out the SD card and the case and it comes out to $601.81, or about the same price we paid for my Wife's new HP machine which came with the keyboard as standard. Everyone can decide for themselves if they like Windows 8. Hardware wise the Envy X2 is way faster than the Prime and it gets better battery life (similar configuration to the prime with a battery in both the tablet part and the keyboard).
But performance comparisons are not fair either. Of course the brand new Atom out performs the two year old Tegra 3. If I were buying an Android tablet today, I'd be looking for a Tegra 4 or similar,
Here is another way the analogy brakes down. Forget about an old Jag vs an old chevy. A better example is that I just bought a new 2013 Nissan truck. Now those have not changed all that much since introduced in 2005. I could probably buy two or three 2005's for what I paid for the 2013, but hey, I wanted a new one.
One final place where the analogy brakes down. A 1960's Jag qualifies as a "classic"/"vintage" where an outdated piece of computing hardware counts as "land fill" in pretty much everyone's book.
By the way, the whole purpose of this thread was not how much a prime or a windows tablet costs. The Idea was to find a newer, faster, better tablet that would also have all the features I like about the prime. Just saying.
PS: Flumpster, thanks for all your work on HB. It is because of you that the Prime is still relevant at all rather than (as I mentioned above) "land fill". It is also because of you and HB that I don't fee bad about hanging onto the Prime for a while.
