[Q] OTA update support in the UK? - Motorola Droid RAZR

I'm seriously considering getting a RAZR as my next phone. I just have one nagging doubt..
Only the O2 network is carrying the device 'officially' in the UK. I'm an Orange customer, and contracts are available for the RAZR through Carphone Warehouse, Phones4u and various online retailers on the Orange nework. However, given that the phone isn't officially offered by Orange, will it receive software updates OTA, or will I have to start rooting and installing ROMs manually?
Probably a noob question, but I'm coming from an iPhone 3GS so, even with the ton of research I've done, android is kinda new to me.

Most likely you will get the updates.

Bought mine sim-free in the UK and received the first OTA update as soon as I switched on. OTA isn't limited by provider.

Thanks, that's all I needed to know

Check out Tesco mobile - I got mine on a t-mobile contract there and the handset is SIM free with no operator guff on.
I popped my Vodafone SIM in (wife gets the t-mobile SIM) as soon as I got it and I was good to go.
Have received a couple of OTA updates since mid-Dec.

O2 will unlock after 12 months otherwise you have to wait until unlocking is worked out after the phone has been launched .

I work for o2 and as long as it is a contract phone and not pay as you go, you can unlock it anytime by either completing the online form (google o2 'unlockmyiphone') or by calling customer services and requesting them to fill out the form for you. It can take up to 14days for you to receive the code.
Failing that, there are numerous IMEI unlocking websites online who will send the code within 24hours for a small fee.
Regards.

I am presuming that it will not need unlocking to use a Giffgaff network sim as its part of O2 .
Three O2 shops today no stock and no idea if they will receive stock for launch 1st may .

You could use a Rebel Simcard. It's not the best solution but it definately does the job. I used one on my Dell Streak when they were exclusive to O2.
I take it you're getting it as an upgrade direct from O2?
If not open a contract with O2 through Phones4U and you'll get an unlocked device

It is £399 with O2 but will probably be locked
I also asked a popular online unlocking firm what the chances are of unlocking this handset and this was their reply:
This should be no problem at all. That's because there's one main database for all European Samsung Android handsets. We have unlocked the Samsung Galaxy S from all 6 main UK networks.

I don't know if the database will work for SGS II. Anyone know?
I have no previous contract, so just buy o2 payg £399 & unlock £15? (Total=£414)
Why would anyone pay £499 unlocked ?

Because at this stage, nobody is really sure that the 'unlock £15' part of the process will indeed work You could end up with a phone that will not currently work on the sim you may have ( I do understand you have no contract, so if you are happy with O2 payg, fill yer boots).

My Vodafone HD2 came unlocked - that wasn't the problem. The killer was that because it was a Vodafone phone, it could only take updates from Vodafone, and their updates came months after the unbranded ones. Once the Devs got HSPL all sorted out then it wasn't so much of a problem, but that didn't happen overnight.
So be aware - it's not just the network locking that's an issue when you buy a phone from a network.

Thanks for the heads up. I think O2 don't mess around with their handsets. Only Orange, T-Mobile & Vodafone.

This was the same with the first batch of O2 HD2's only accepting O2 specific updates which they changed after the second batch went out as were getting too many complaints. Hopefully they've learned from this and will allow standard manufacturer updates from the start. This wasn't due to particular messing around it was due to the serial numbers being registered with the manufacturer as not being generic therefore updates were refused by them. I doubt Samsung are quite as good as HTC with the regular updates but always good to know you can update when it's available.

Here's a response I received from a query I made of an eBay seller in relation to unlocking the SGS2...
"This is GUARANTEE TO WORK because this code is directly from Samsung and it is permanent. After you unlocked it, you can do software update or anything you like and it will still be unlocked."
Sounds promising...
It does but would like to know for sure before buying.

you say it can take 14 days for the code to arrive...is that normal or is it usually quicker?
Successful unlock?
Did anyone hear about any successful SGS2 unlock?
I also read in some places that when you buy PNG from O2 it is SIM free. This was the case when I bought an iPhone 4 when it came out. It was SIM free out of the box.
just either get CPW to price match which they are supposedly doing at £399, or waith two weeks as they are goint to that price soon.
This is very stupid from me but as with the SGS, would it be possible to retrieve the bml3.bak file and unlock?
I'm just assuming samsung is using the same method of hiding the Network Control Key.. maybe they're lazy..

7740 Update

Hi All,
Just a quick question. Has anyone with sim free Nokia (CW, P4U etc) received the 7440 update, yet?
It looks like only the branded handset's got it.

Bought mine on PAYG (not sure if it's SIM FREE as I don't have another Micro SIM to try) from Three, no update yet
Unbranded bought in The Netherlands. No update yet.
Same as WizardX. However this thread would be a lot more informative if only the updated handsets were posted.

[Q] S3 on Orange Jellybean?

Having read that Three have now released the Jellybean update, before the unlocked handsets direct from Samsung, it got me thinking. I purchased an unlocked S3 through phones4u but on the Orange Network.. Would it allow me to update my handset if i were to put a Three SIM card in ?? I'm guessing not but If soo, would there be any consequences??
Sorry if this is a novice question, just wondered.
Thanks
No it doesn't work like that. If you are desperate you can always use Odin to flash it. (Lots of tutorials and guides on here) or just wait for the official update
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
It doesn't matter if your phones locked or unlocked, or what network it was on or what sim you have in...
If your phone is Three branded (usually means you purchased it from Three) then kies will let you upgrade to Jellybean. If it's an unlocked simfree unit (as p4u would sell it) you have to wait for Samsung to release their simfree handset update.
Three, voda and O2 have all updated within the last 7days, even Virgin have announced that their update will be available this week, so shouldn't be long now until Samsung and orange/t-mob do..
Annoying though, I don't understand why there is a delay on Orange, especially when they've had the LTE i9305 available for over a week already running on Orange-branded Jellybean.. Surely there's not going to be that much difference, I doubt they'd run into any problems for the I9300 update.

Cannot update to AT&T OTA

According to https://www.att.com/device-support/article/wireless/KM1386390/LG/LMV600AM there is a V600AM10w Software version available for the AT&T variant of the v60. My device still shows V600AM10p in the About Phone section, and when I manually check for update get the downloading new software version notification, but ultimately nothing is downloaded and I get an error that "Cannot update"
This is connected via WiFi, and sitting at 98% battery life. Any thoghts about why this would be happening?

OK. I have an open support ticket with AT&T and LG support, the normal Tier 1 support on AT&T could not help me.

OK, LG Support suggested that I do a factory reset. That didn't help either. still stuck at V600AM10p and it looks like it will not actually download the V600AM10w update as it sits at 0% on the download until it errors out.
I had asked LG Support what I could do if the factory reset didn't work and they mentioned sending the phone back in for a replacement one. I hope they can send me one first and let me send the other back to them so that I do not have a phoneless period just because their hardware won't upgrade.
(I did register for the LG Second Year Promise Program when I first got my phone, so I'l looking into that as well.)

I have fixed the problem. I ask my friend to borrow his at&t sim card to try it on my phone. It works, once the at&t sim card is in the phone, the software update work.
If no one can borrow the sim card for you to test it. You can get it on Amazon

Make sure you select the correct network for your phone ( at&t, tmobile or verizon) the sim card only $15 and you going to have 1 month per paid service.
Hope that can help to fix the error. The phone is geart. But if you can not get the update that is suck.

I will have to try with a different AT&T sim card... I've tried Reseating the sim, Update OTA,Update over LG Bridge, LG UP, Resetting the network, Factory Reset... nothing has helped. At this point LG and AT&T are saying replace the device, but when I tried setting that up today every single support person I spoke to is muffled and hard to understand (on purpose?) ... they sound like a bunch of manure salespeople with a mouthful of fresh samples.
Alas, I tried it all and had to resort to mailing my phone in to LG for a warranty supported repair... hope to have it back within 2 months. Until then I'm having some nostalga with my LG V20 running LineageOS 17.1.
Yay, I got my V60 back today and it has the latest OS build now... Only cost me time and packaging at my local FedEx.

LG G8X-G850UM (AT&T) on Cricket: FOTA?

I bought a couple AT&T LG G8X's for my wife and myself to use on Cricket (AT&T MVNO) after we found out our current phones won't work on Cricket's network as of next February. Unfortunately I've discovered that these phones cannot do OTA updates (w/o the PITA process of getting an AT&T SIM). I'm just wondering if anyone has found a workaround for this. Specifically I'm wondering if I get the phones network unlocked from AT&T if that would then allow us to update direct from LG rather than AT&T. Anyone tried this?
Love the phones, but I've got to be able to update them.
I have a lg g8x from AT&T that has been paid off and unlocked by AT&T. What I was told is, to get the updates, I need to be using an AT&T sim and be on their network. I'm not in the US so getting that done is not even possible for me. So far I have not seen a way to get updates without using a AT&T sim.

I've done a little more research on this and found info that you can use a prepaid Tracfone SIM for AT&T to trigger AT&T to update the phone. I bought one for. 99 and am going to try it as soon as I get the SIM. I believe you have to purchase 1 month of service and the cheapest plan is $15. I'll report back if it works, but I don't know if that'd be an option for you.

I have thought about it but with not knowing if that would actually work, I didn't want to try. I like the phone so I'm not willing to sell it so maybe one day I'll test to see if using a sim in a different country would actually work.
I can confirm that using an activated Tracfone SIM for AT&T works to trip the LG G8X to update. I'm updating from Pie to 10 now on one of the phones I bought and am going to try it on the other shortly. I had to factory reset the phone after activating the SIM and then it let me start downloading updates.

I have the same model as you do. I bought it carrier unlocked and it didn't come with a SIM card. I went in the settings and did the system updates no problem, but I was using Wi-Fi.
Unfortunately mine was not unlocked or it probably would have updated like yours @Magichost. All's good now though. It's a shame LG is going out of the phone business. I've always liked the quirky phones they've come out with and that they kept SD card and headphone jacks.
