Mystery Update Message... - Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0, 5.0

Hi,
My son took the player to a sleep over and just called me with a question. He turned the player on, left it for a couple of minutes, came back to an update screen with android and papers flying, with a message "Downloading to target."
It's the player's first time on his friend's wi-fi network which doesn't have a password.
1. Has anyone experienced this message before?
2. Any idea what's updating?
3. Will the player automatically connect to a new wi-fi network (that doesn't have security) without prompting?
Thanks

"Downloading to target"?
Are you sure it wasn't a big "under construction" triangle sign with:
"Downloading...
Do not turn off Target!!!"
If it was that, he somehow entered download mode... It should be difficult to enter this accidentally...
It will not automatically connect to an insecure network without prompting, unless the network shares the same name as one you've connected to before.

He must have accidentally got into download mode by pressing power + volumeUp. No big deal, just tell him to hold the power button until the device turns off and turn on again. Downloading mode is used when you want to flash a ROM to your device using ODIN.
Hope i helped!

I'm going to give him a call and see whether it has changed, if not, we'll give this suggestion a try.
Thanks

It worked, many thanks.

Yeah, if you accidentally enter download mode, but you did NOT start ANY flashing operations, it's safe to exit with a long-press of power.

Boot Loop on Galaxy Tab 10.1 that prevents shutting device off.

So I already posted in both threads similar to mine I'm posting now, but those problems seem to be different from the problem I'm having.
So everyone says to do the emergency "power on with volume up held down"
But mine never powers off. The Boot loop goes from the boot loop sequence, and if I force it off it goes to "Entering Upload Mode: Cause Unknown". Forcing that off it immediately boots into the boot loop. So I can never shut it off, so I can never enter the emergency "hard reset" mode, because the device never shuts off. Eventually the battery dies, but the hard reset doesn't worth then either.
Does anyone know how to use the upload mode? The link to a samsung driver in the other thread is now a broken link. And once I'm able to write data to the device, where do I get the right set of android hard reset files?
I have no data on the device I need.
I have a very similar situation. Since yesterday my tab got caught in a boot loop. Didn't made any changes, just went into it. And the only way to turn it off is to force it to go to download mode and turn it off down by holding power button from there. I have rooted it a long time ago. I can't get into recovery mode by holding power+up. All I can get it the download mode that first says "waiting for usb cable" and if I connect it to the PC it goes to "press the [START] of Odin3". Do I need to try the fastboot method and reset it to factory details? I've being trying to do that but no devices were listed... Or do I need to reflash something with oding again? Please, just give me a tip.
Does anyone know how to use "upload mode" ?

i know what download mode is but what is upload mode?
can you get into download mode?
pwr + button next to it...hold until a menu pops up.
if you can then just flash a odin rom from there...get it from here or sammobile.com
hi
i have similar situation. i have a boot loop also. i can get into download mode. but then i can't get into odin3 download mode. it's stuck on waiting usb cable.
i just want to flash stock rom. i'v tried flashing a custom rom. but something went wrong and now i have this problem. hope somebody can help me.
If you're using a windows machine reinstall the drivers and see if that helps get past the problem. If you need links I have to get on my PC an copy and paste from there. Keep us updated. I've been there done that I think. So I hope I can help.

Benzoman,

Glad I could be of help and you fixed the problem
by the way, there is a thanks button you could use.

sorry, my bad! how about now? tnx
No problem. Now you got one to.

What drivers? I've never installed any drivers of any kind, nor does my manual mention the need for drivers?
What is Odin, and why have I never heard of it? Why can't I find a download link for Odin?
Also, why can't I find any information about Odin?
This is the best I can find, but it appears to not be the maker.... http://www.rootingdroid.com/246/flash-your-samsung-with-odin-download-odin/
The instructions on that page:
" Using your data cable, connect your Android device to your computer. Turn off your mobile device for 30 seconds then power it up by pressing and holding HOME, POWER and VOLUME DOWN buttons until you will be prompted that you have entered in download mode."
I finally got into download mode! I had to connect the USB cable to the device. However, the copy of Odin3 I found is just a giant box with blank text fields. I have no idea what I'm doing with it. It did not auto detect my device, and I have no idea what firmware version I currently am using because I can't get the device to boot.

S3 bricked

Hey everybody
A few days ago i rooted my phone with CF-Root and installed the Super Nexus Rom Stable 1. It run really
fast and worked great :good:
This morning I saw that the second version released. So I downloaded it and also the gapps again. But after installing i recognized
that the screen flashed and the rom didn't run smooth.I decided to roll it back with my backup.
But after starting the backup, the screen got black. I waited 30 minutes, then i took the battery out of my smartphone. As I put it back and started my phone
again, i just saw a purple screen. No samsung logo or somthing else. after 2 minutes i saw the status bar at the top, but the rest of the screen kept purple. I tried to bring it in download mode, but the screen is always purple and odin don't recognize the phone.
Please help me
Did you try entering download mode with a jig? Sometimes even when button combo or cable /volume combos don't work a jig will.

No, i think i should buy one.
I think my problem is that the phone gets into the Download Mode. But at the s3 we have to confirm that we really want to get into this mode.
I think i just hang at this screen, but can't check the right box, cause i just see the purple screen
Get I immediatly into the Download Mode with a jig, or have i also to check the accept button?
charge phone via pc for sumtime then try to enter in downlaod mode
Just because the screen is purple/black doesnt mean that phone is not in download mode.
If you hold the combo buttons to get into download mode but cant see the screen where it says press up to go into download mode just wait a sec and press up anyway.
then plug your phone up to odin.....it may still be able to go into download mode even though you are SEEING the screen.

I started my phone normal and wait some time. Then I connected it to the pc. The explorer starts and show me a window with the title GWT-I9300.
But instead to see any content the folder is absolutly empty. Bad sign??? Or good sign that i can connect it?
I start it again with the 3 key combo in Debug Mode. I think i'm in cause if i connect it again to the pc nothing happened. Odin also doesn't recognized the phone

You should return it to stock with a full flash give me a sec I'll grab a link this will restore everything. You then should go into recovery volume up middle button and power and do a full wipe to make sure you get everything out as odin doesn't do that it will only override what is there.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1646610
Download file from there and just to make sure we are talking international gt-i9300 CORRECT? The file is big like 750 megs it contains stock everything and will restore the entire device to stock. It will not erase the on board store partitioned for the SD heck it doesn't erase anything just overrides.

Doesn't sound like a hardware brick. After you flash the stock again if you still have the purple screen let me know and i'll find the button combo so you can wipe the data as there could still be something lingering that could cause that. And don't be to worried you have a colored screen that's not too bad it's when you get nothing no matter what that you should get very scared

Yeah that's what I thought so last thing
Pull battery
Hold Volume UP Middle Button and Power Button for ten seconds
wait like another 20 seconds then press volume down twice then press power after a min press power again with any luck this will do a full wipe for you. It is blind but I did confirm on my phone the times it takes.
Edit
After you volume down twice and then press power volume down three times and press power again then wait ten seconds and press power a last time. The third press is to wipe the cache which is the problem I bet.
Was there any info about GPU overclocking/volting on that custom rom you installed? I mean on that version 2.
For me this sounds like that your graphical chip on the phone might have damaged.

It could be but lets not scare the dude yet. I have had many phones do blue and purple screens just as he describes it is generally a bad flash or file or forgetting to wipe. I do not think at this point we are looking at a bad GPU. I have also had this phone give me weird colored screen flashed upon starting or going into recovery that had to do with a improper restore.

[Q] Is my galaxy nexus bricked?

Hi All,
I've got a Galaxy Nexus which looks like working till the standby screen kicks in and then it turns itself off. The phone is rooted.
Fastboot starts while I press the vol up+down+pwr buttons, but once I release them the phone turns off. The volume down+pwr buttons are doing the same effect. While turned on I can browse the whole system via file manager.
Once I connect to the USB cable (power or computer) it turns off.
The phone is i9250 running currently Android 4.2.2
I've tried to figure out some solution in the posts but I didn't find any relevant info. I need to reset the root access and reinstall the factory image.
THe other problem is when I connect the USB cable the phone turns itself off
I tried to download the OMAP flash file from Legija but the link doesn't work anywhere... If you have any info on that I would really appreciate

Thanks for your reply.
When I plug in the USB the device turns off. I can't put it to download mode either.
I've just downloaded the OMAP flash files but at this stage I try to figure out how to use it. I've installed the nexus drivers but OMAP does not recognize my phone, so it looks like I stuck for a while.
BTW: I can access the root partition when the phone turned on(normal use), so if anyone knows what should I change or delete in order to enter the download mode I would appreciate it. Thx

Yes, I can turn the phone on to normal use however it turns itself off when it is plugged to USB or if it is going to standby.
Since it is rooted, with a file browser I can access the root partition. I can NOT connect USB and I can NOT put it download mode or fastboot mode because the phone turns off straight away. I even can make short phone calls from it.
So I'm just after some info on how to fix the USB connection and put the phone back to original state so I can send it to Samsung for repair
Is USB debugging turned on or off?
try turning it on (if its off) and off (if its on).
i am asuming that it only turns off when you connect your phone to you PC, not to a wall charger right?
Bricked means the device just doesn't work at all. This commonly happens (bricked) when there's a software update and it gets half updated. Therefore, the answer is no, its not bricked, but you do have a serious problem there.

[Q] HELP! I think i hard bricked my S4

Anyone's help would be FANTASTIC!
I downloaded and installed LiquidSmooth 2.6.5 on 06/15/13 wiped everything necessary, went to reboot and it said i wasnt rooted would i like to install SuperSU, i installed it and it rebooted to a black screen and wont go any further. all it does is vibrate every couple of seconds. Is there ANYTHING i can do to get back into TWRP recovery? stock recovery? flash the stock image with Odin? it wont boot into TWRP, or download mode.
Please help, might have bricked my hard earned Verizon S4
Hi,
I've recently just installed the TeamWin Recovery Project.
my Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 has been rooted, and I even checked with some application on the Google Play market, and it has indicated that it indeed was rooted.
But I still kept on getting the annoying "some application need attention blah blah blah..." in the notification bar, and when I click it it gave me options reboot now or reboot later.
Of course I clicked "reboot now" and after a while, I messed up on my cyananogen mod I guess and I recovered using TWRP through a back up that I have already made prior to flashing the CM 10.1. And it was working normally.
Then I some how went to the TWRP again and it said that my phone wasn't rooted any longer! So I swiped the "root the device now" knob thing and ever since then it has been stuck in the "samsung" screen with the unlocked labeled as "custom" underneath.
Even if I try to do Volume Up + Power + Home button it doesn't send me back to the TWRP screen, rather I see the indication that TWRP has been initiated, but it just crashes and turns my phone off.
When I do Volume down + Power + Home button I can get to the Download mode, but it doesn't seem like my computer can recognize the device.
After the Download page and I push the Volume Up button for the actual download mode on the top left it says
Odin Mode
Product name: SCH-I545
Current Binary: Samsung Official
System Status: Custom
CSB-OEM_Config-LSB: 0x30
Write Protection: Enable"

And when I do get to this point my computer does recognize the phone and I know this by hearing the usb connection sound that a computer makes.
How do I get my phone back to factory state so that I can maybe once again trying rooting it again?
Thanks in advance.
and I apologize for so much information even if the rules say that I should be brief as possible, but it felt like the details were needed. (correct me if I'm wrong).

I don't understand how I could have hard-bricked the phone just by formatting.
Just before rebooting, CWM prompted me "saying root access might be lost" and I hit ignore.

Just curious on something.... Not trying to be a jerk. Why are you sending pm's instead of replying in the thread? If your pm is helping this person I'm sure it could help many people if it was in the thread. Unless your a Verizon employee with secret unbricking files or something

Responded to you via PM as to not start any issues here.
I am in a similar situation, I am able to get into Odin mode, though my model number is SCG-I545 if that makes a difference.

You can the following procedure, as described in many threads around here. You just need to do the following steps:
1: download stock firmware (you can find it at http://sammobile.com)
2: download Odin (i recommend v3.07, you can find with a search)
3: install usb drivers for your device
4: put your device in download mode (remove your battery and put back on the phone; after this power it up with power button + home button + volume DOWN; when your device vibrate, release the power button but keep the another 2 pressed)
5: confirm the warning on screen with volume UP
6: open Odin, click in PDA and select the downloaded firmware (you may need to unpack it first, because Odin expects a .tar or a .tar.md5 file)
7: plug your device in your computer; Odin must recognize your phone (a blue field will appear on screen)
8: uncheck only the auto-reboot and leave the another boxes as it is
9: click on start button and wait... it will take around 15 minutes
10: when "reset" appears on the screen, disconnect your device, remove the battery and put it again; after this, power up your phone normally and wait the boot. It should work as expected now.

screen stays black after doing this.. will the problem possibly be on the SCREEN itself? it also heats up alot everytime i turn it on..
i called the number and its ringing i even managed to answer it by swiping the screen even if i cant see a thing.

Umm, I would rather take it to the service centre.
If you're not sure what's wrong and if you don't mess around with your phone, that's the only way you got.

You screen was black even in download mode?
If not, you could try to flash CWM and do a factory reset in your device, and reflash the rom. But I think it's better to take your device to an authorized service center.

i managed to flash stock rom via odin (without seeing anything) and problem still occurs.. my wife brought it to service center and was told that the problem seems to be on the screen itself *hope its not* we'll call them after 3 days to know the real problem..
i hope its just a wiring problem, because if the problem is the screen, that means a lot of money ~
thanks to all!
