browser with adblock? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to block adds and social media bars with any android broswer?
Also, is there a concensus on which browser is best?

Last time I asked this in the Windows Phone 7 section I got my ass chewed that it is rude to block ads and blah blah.
Sent from my HD7 T9292 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App

Adfree app works if your rooted.
sent from my Sensation on CM7 Alpha#10

Firefox Mobile has the "Adblock Plus" extension available to it. It works.
However, unless it has been changed, it is a beast that takes a long time to load (in comparison to the alternatives).
-- end short answer --
Some release will drop XUL and go with native Android UI... and thus speed it up. I have not tracked the topic, but there was concern/question/reality that removing XUL would break compatibility.
There are a couple of Android wide ad blockers, but to my knowledge they all require root (as mentioned above), and all but 1 works by blocking entire domains (not the ABP regex approach).
Someone started an Android-wide Adblock Plus clone (it's in the market). He stopped and passed it on to a member of THE Adblock team. I contacted both developers. The "current" dev did not respond, so my hopes are low. (The big problem is that ABP is Javascript, and the clone is a reimplementation in Android-Java.)

If you're rooted then use an app called "Ad Away" from the market. I been using it for quite a while now and it works flawlessly.

Do Ad Away also block Adds from "free Apps"? And could you say that its better tan addfree?

It would be nice to be able to turn off all the Social Media links that seem to infect every single webpage on the Internet these days. I don't think that's possible with any software though is it?

Try AdFree Android, this blocks all ads on free apps by having a similar proxy blacklist like AdBlockPlus for webpages. It works very well.

Pop over ads on XDA, whats up with that?

Ok today I have been getting pop over ads on XDA, doesnt matter what browser, nor OS I use. I refuse to use adblockers on my browser, as I Actually click ads and support sites I like.
But seriously pop over ads XDA? Would rather surf android forums than deal with pop over ads.
Strange. I've never gotten notifications that popups had been blocked (as is the case when they are) nor did I get any in a quick spin around the site with ABP off.
Perhaps your ISP is injecting ads.
hmmmm... i don't seem to be getting any pop over ads; i'm using chrome with no blockers
but i am using the XDA 2010 Beta style though (not sure if that means anything)
now i'm not dissing your computer security skills but you may want to run and anti-spyware program or virus scan
No pop-up's for me either... I remember having some problems awhile back with being redirected while doing certain google searches...I just run malwarebytes when I start noticing weird behavior while browsing and it usually picks up whatever is causing the problem.

You could always use an adblocker and make exceptions in the settings for the sites you wish to support by viewing/clicking adds. I do this for sites that I tend to visit daily (like xda, digg, etc). I have not noticed any pop up ads with xda

Funny you should mention that, I just got a pop-up blocked when I got here. First time I've had that happen.
I have gotten these popup/over ads about 4 times in the last few weeks.... definitely annoying

Not possible, I am tunneled from my home to one of my servers. So I am the outbound isp.

Same thing I do (Xda, Reddit, etc)
Hell I had to use it to block that stupid new grey bar at the bottom of youtube that keeps autoplaying videos.
Haven't seen any pop-overs yet...on the beta version of XDA
Ad Blocker Plus on Firefox has me chillen
I've noticed them as well and I hate them though I would still rather surf here then android forums
I haven't had any yet *crosses fingers*
Yeah, I don't think I could ever browse Android Forums in any serious capacity.
popovers are delicious

Note will be first Android phone

Other than a rooted Nook tablet I don't have much experience with Android. I'm coming from an iPhone4 and looking forward to something new.
What are the must have utilities and apps?
Any tips or must have, must do things?
I've seen doubletwist mentioned and Samsung uses Kies.
Looking forward to Note...

I have never used kies with either my captivate or infuse. Don't see the need with other apps, as well as the fact that you can just drag and drop files onto your phone's storage. Syncing reminds me of an iphone, and is stupid in my opinion. Drag and drop allows you to only add the files you need/want, and is much faster in the long run.
I suggest using Google Music for your music, it automatically uploads up to 20,000 songs automatically from your itunes or windows media player to the cloud so that you can access them wherever.
If you use grooveshark at all, check out Dood's music streamer. Allows you to use grooveshark on the go without paying for premium service. If you have not used grooveshark before, check it out on your computer.
Google voice provides a simple, visual voicemail system, though I think I have read somewhere that the note has visual voicemail built in? Could be wrong.
XDA app is a must, though I assume you use that on your Nook already.
Dropbox is useful for documents, as well as google docs.
The note comes with S Note and other various apps that make use of the S pen.
Dolphin Browser HD is a great replacement browser that I have used with all of my androids.
Evernote is useful for taking notes that can be accessed on your phone or any computer. I hope the S pen can have some functionality with this app.
Root explorer is definitely worth the few bucks it costs to have access to all of the files on your phone.
Titanium backup is a must if you are into ROMing your devices, as it will allow you to restore your apps after every flash with ease. The free version works, but you have to approve every app install. I suggest buying the full version, as the restore process is fully automated and can run in the background or with your screen off, making the process much less cumbersome.
Other than that, we will have to wait and see if apps such as rom manager and such will be of any use to the flashing process once the devs get their hands on the device and start pumping out custom roms.
OP, i'm also as green as you on the Android platform. I have an iphone 4s and got the Note just to explore Android.

I need to try Dolphin, using Opera on Nook now and it's better than the default but still lacking. The firefox app seems terrible/incomplete.

I use a captivate and have used froyo and gingerbread. I suspect you will find the gingerbread used on the g-note okay but not as polished and as smooth as your iOS. That said, the new android ICS (using cm9 alpha, build 16) is is incredible. Smooth, clean, powerful and intuitive. A pleasure to use, I believe It offers the best of both worlds. The ease of apple and the configurable power of android.
Since you have a nook you can try it out, the nook ics rom is very usable and will give you a hint of the g-note goodness to come with the ics operating system the xda guys will cook up. I have a nook to, and if you have rooted it, the ics install will be relatively simple.
The following list are some Apps you might find worth looking at, and depending on your interest, might even be worth paying for.
Music; I use Power Amp, paid app. clean seductive interface, lots of audio magic for the music lover, and great developer support.
Files; Webdav; paid ver. Nice little app let's you wireless mount your android as a drive so you can cut/paste files and folders as you would to and from any other drive on your PC. Great for lots of audio book files, movies, or just cleaning up your phone. You can use 3g instead of wifi but I've never tried it.
Podcasts; Dogcatcher, paid app. simply the best. Its biggest competition is Mypod. I used it for over a year, but never was able to get comfortable with its interface. Dogcatcher....you can just start using it, and it has lots of options.
Sling player, TV goodness, paid app and home box. Watch anything straight from your home cable, sat., or ota tuner, perfect if your a sports nut.
Launcher; Nova , free app. I am still testing but it is just so sexy and free so I figured I give it a mention.
Radio; Tune in , free app. music sports news radio stations with easy search presets. It is to good to be true but I haven't found a downside yet.
Browser; Dolphin HD, free app. I can't get excited about this one. It works, the speed is good, and it is not going to choke on flash. I would like to recommend Opera but it has been very buggy lately, I don't think it is playing nice with ics.
Google chrome is getting great reviews but it doesn't support flash. Then there is Boat browser and Quick Ics browser both show great promise but not sure about them yet.
I've got a G-note on order, for the lte and its monster screen. The thing is, since I got ics, my captivate is such a pleasure to use and play with I don't know how I'll survive waiting for a ics port.
Oh, and samsungs kies program might have some use but I've never found it.

I'm very disappointed to hear that Opera is buggy with ICS--it's my favorite browser by far. <sarcasm>Fortunately</sarcasm>, we probably won't have a working ICS ROM for I717 any time soon. For the OP, this is Opera Mobile, not Opera Mini--the latter handles all traffic through opera's servers and compresses images to speed up browsing for slow phones or phones with poor connections, but the result is that many webpages with active (javascript or flash) content just don't work right.
Also a word of warning for the OP: if you choose Dolphin, make sure you are rooted and block en.mywebzines.com (and maybe some other related URLs) through your hosts file. The spyware seems to be removed in the latest update, but I still won't trust a browser that, at any time in its history, forwarded essentially all of your web activity to a third party server. There's a long thread around here that discusses these issues in more depth.
Browsers are very much a matter of personal preference though; also, if you use a browser that matches your desktop browser, it makes syncing the two much easier--firefox, opera, and chrome all have great sync capabilities between their desktop and mobile counterparts.
Thanks for the link, a very disturbing read regarding the Dolphin Browser HD. I took aggressive data mining for granted, but damn the DB-hd boys are into strip mining personal data...... thanks again for taking the time to post...
OP, please forget i even mentioned Dolphin
(i going to.. ; ) and give Opera a shot. He is right were not gonna be on ics for good stretch, and by the time we are any quirks will be ironed out. It is a great overall program with lots of features. It has usually been my daily driver since the long gone days of windows mobile.

root question?
Since ICS is a ways off, If we root for TiBU, or Root explorer to remove certain system apps, will we get ICS FOTA, or will we not get it without unrooting and replacing all bloat we removed?
So my question is -any advice for those of us who root but want the OTA ICS when it comes out?
Should have put this out first- will the method for the international version for root work for the ATT one?

[Q] App to track family members (with their permission)

I saw another thread about hiding apps in some guy's wife's phone to track her. I'm looking for something similar with my wife, but it does not need to be hidden. Mainly to be used because I commute quite a distance and this would let her know how close I am to home (rather than having me text while driving). Similarly for her when she's travelling.
Just an app that would:-
1. Allow me to see where she is (and vice-versa)
2. Use GPS if on, otherwise fall back on net information
3. Not use SMSes (some sort of internet-based communication between phones)
I could probably hack something up using Tasker but her phone isn't rooted like mine is so the capabilities for GPS etc are a bit more limited (and time is limited, of course).
Thanks!

You can actually do this with the built in google maps application. It's called local/latitude. You can share where you are and control who sees it an when. Go ahead and look into it. Much better then downloading another app IMHO.
See here: Google search latitude android
Thanks, yeah I know about latitude features but it seems to lack a way to "ping" the other party with the equivalent of "hey, I've reached road X"
Sent from my GT-P7500 using Tapatalk HD
Use an app called Backitude from the Play Store. Latitude updates pretty arbitrarily on its own. This app allows you to control how and when it updates, and also let's another person force an update on your phone by sending an SMS. It's all Internet based except the update triggering part. You can also use the tracking features of Cerberus, another app in the Play Store.

Chrome Won't Stop Suggesting Web Apps

Hi all. Not sure if this is exactly the right spot, but I thought I'd try.
So I did the WTF upgrade on my V30+, and after having set everything up, I'm left with a REALLY annoying artifact/feature.
Every time I visit a page on MSN.com or on Reddit.com and scroll down the page to read more, these websites ask me to install their app. I've tried saying no. I've tried saying yes, but then not installing. I've tried cancelling out. I've tried reinstalling Chrome and then tried Chrome Dev. No matter what I do (short of installing the apps, which I did not try), the web pages will continue to suggest that I download the app on EVERY SINGLE PAGE I VISIT ON THEIR SITES.
Suffice to say, I"m really annoyed at this "feature" and was wondering if anyone knows how to either get rid of it or suppress it once and for all. If it doesn't stop, I'm considering changing my default browser to something else.
Firefox Nightly and Brave Browser are two full featured browsers that give you more control of what displays on your screen.
May I suggest Adaway ad blocker for rooted devices?? Your post made no mention if you are using any ad block software!! It looks like a "sponsored" ad, nasty buggers!!:fingers-crossed:

Yep. I have AdAway running.
I also get those when javascript is allowed ...
Use a browser which can disable javascript - such as "Naked Browser",
or use e.g. Firefox with UBlock Origin in +/-"advanced user" mode and disable java scripts globally, then case by case allow them - this should prevent these kind of incidences by default

not sure which webbrowser you used - but yeah, the web nowadays is stupid - loading all stuff via external frames, external sites, etc.
you, of course, can circumvent those message via using e.g. reddit app or having it installed (not sure if merely installing it would make that message stop).
Another way would be to load the "desktop version" of the site, in that case, it shouldn't be displayed neither
Maybe I just miss my very out-of-date LG G3 experience where it didn't know how to deal with any of this. Heh.
Thanks for all of the suggestions, folks. I appreciate it. I'll keep playing around with Chrome and alternative browsers to see if there's a way to get it to where I want.

Soul Browser - A litte gem you've probably never heard of

I posted this on the Kiwi Browser thread more in mourning at the lack of support and updates Kiwi has received in the last year or so.
So I stumbled on Soul Browser and it's been excellent so far. Extremely fast and lite. Unfortunately it doesn't have extensions but it's got virtually every function and customization you can think of. Digging into it's background it seems to be from a developer out of the UK so should be safe. It's on the Play Store but not open source unfortunately.
Everything is good and all but i couldn't find the toggle to turn video overlays on fullscreen. i watch something on youtube in portrait mode, when i make it fullscreen, video pauses, sometimes starts from the beginning and i don't like that overlay with full of buttons. How do i turn that of and have smooth transition?

Read the last 5 or so pages of the Kiwi thread on here and most of your concerns are answered. I, and several others, had the same worries but it seems Adguard DNS takes care of most issues. Trackers etc are all Google stuff anyway according to ClassyShark.

Thanks, yes I've just come from there! I use nextdns so nothing gets through to Google any way. It looks more a Samsung Internet base than Kiwi/plain Chrome. I just wish there was more info. And I'm so tired of being unable to migrate bookmarks, logins, cookies, etc between browsers!

I understand it's Chromium based but so is Samsung so all the same.
I'm having issues using it with NextDNS. It works but I get constant SSL errors on Soul which I don't get on Samsung or Kiwi, so there's something NextDNS doesn't like in there but I can't find it in the NextDNS logs. However it works fine with Adguard DNS and all trackers etc are blocked. I added Energized Ultimate to the adblock host list in Soul as an extra measure.
I imported my chrome bookmarks with ease using the html file. So no issues there.
A very good browser and can be greatly configured
(bars on top or bottom in custom size, long press settings, swipe settings, back/forward gestures, double finger gestures, no reload when back/forth, skip to page beginning, floating scrollbar, own blocklists, full auto dark mode, video downloader and much much more). I've never seen a better mobile browser, it's crazy.
But my problem with it is that it doesn't launch native apps from links:
Youtube is launched only if you google for youtube, but not from embedded videos; reddit is launched only if you use native reddit app and not third party one; ebay app doesn't launch and so on. Dealbreaker for me - I feel like on iOS.
Another thing is adblocker isn't consistent. If you jump through tabs and apps and then go back to prev opened website, sometimes there is suddenly an ad running, which was blocked before.
So overall it feels kinda buggy and you can say it's made by one person and on top of that - by a completly unknown entity (no mail, website) originate in Asia.
So I'm back on Samsung Browser beta which is still missing few nice to have things, but is fully baked.

I use Vanced and it launches directly. Check settings and enable the toggle to allow YouTube launch. I don't know about the ebay app but complaining about a 3rd party reddit app isn't the browsers fault.
I've switched off the built-in adblocker and use 1Hosts Pro and Energized Ultimate in the user field and never had that problem even with the built-in one active. Maybe because I also use a private dns adblocker on my devices.
I think the developer is from Korea as there are references to Korean legalities if you dig a little. I use this browser for daily casual surfing and it's fantastic but my main browser is also Samsung for secure and private stuff. Best of both worlds.
Well I use YouTube app and not vanced and it's not working. Toggle is set correctly and as I said some apps are starting, example "eBay Kleinanzeigen".
Ofcourse it's browsers fault if 3rd party reddit client is not starting IF it's registered in system as default reddit client.
Well written browsers always open apps properly: Samsung Browser, Firefox, Yandex and so on, because they respect those flags.
I don't want to need use vpn for adblocking.

Thanks for letting other people know about this browser.
I am not a advanced user. I only want a browser with adblocker and simple interface. I don't know about hosts, dns, etc.,
I have used Via, OH, Berry, Fulguris, Stargon, Onbibi browsers. Soul mixes all these into one.
Thanks
One thing missing is reader mode. Some old websites won't "work" mobile without it, example:
Infinite-baffle
Honestly! I'm just loving it! Perfect title and Perfect Browser name! Soul Browser

I totally agree about how nice this browser is but I'm also VERY MUCH concerned about the risk of privacy violation. Anyone has additional info about this ?
To the author if he's reading us: why don't you show up and talk about this important aspect of your (fantastic) app ?
Cool browser. But there's no option to import passwords
This was my daily browser for a while but now things are getting out of control. So much customisations as I like but not working flawlessly. Sad that no developer communication exist and bugs are not getting fixed.
Really like this browser but I have one really annoying issue : when watching a video in full screen landscape mode and would like to adjust something and tap the screen, the navigation bar do not disappear automatically...
Anybody faced this issue?
