Deenybird's ATT GS2 battery experience + recommendations - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

I've loved my Galaxy SII right from day 1, but the phone's battery life has made it a complicated relationship.... I'm hoping to share my experience as a heavy user and how i'm dealing with the battery.
My usage:
I would fall into the 'power user' category. I'm rooted, on stock 2.3.4 (the update to 2.3.6 was pushed to my phone, but obviously failed). I'm often streaming audio podcasts, using Waze (a social gps program), and checking twitter and online forums and the occasional email or text. Bit of youtube in there as well. Bluetooth is on 10% of the time, wifi always, screen 1 notch below max brightness, no 'fetching' widgets.
My last phone, the iphone 4 had better battery life, but not incredibly so. During heavy use I would get ~6 hours. Standby was closer to 20 hours. I still had to charge at some point during the day, but it's different with the GS2.
Let's take a look at the Battery Usage in Settings....

With 4 and a half hours of usage, i'm down to 13%. That means I'm up at 8:00AM, and by 1:00PM my phone is dead. It would almost be hilarious if it wasn't so sad... Charging has become a critical part of my daily routine. I'm using an external battery pack (more info below) and charge off a wall socket
Solution so far:
I've been using the Energizer XPAL4001, a 4000mah external battery for $58.00.
The thing is great, and I obviously wouldn't make it a full day without it. However it's a hassle to have to lug it around which is why i'm considering getting the extended battery which I was hoping to avoid by getting the external. But it looks like I do need both solutions.
Solutions I'm considering:
I'm about to pull the trigger on a3500mAh Extended Battery + Cover off of ebay. It's going for $11.00 with free shipping, so the price is certainly right.
What do you guys recommend? Has anyone tried the battery I'm looking at? It doesn't have NFC, but it's $11. I'd love to hear from other power users and how they're dealing with things.
PS. Still love my GS2

I'd recommend using your phone less!!
Try an i9100 rom, much better battery life.

You are expecting too much if you want it to last all day long with that much usage.
Doesn't look like your phone went into deep sleep not once.
Try flashing UnNamed 1.3.2 or 2.2.1 and a custom kernal and use SetCPU to lower clocks/volts.
This should help you in increasing the battery life a little more.

Have you checked this thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308030
What about the Korean 2000mah battery? You can see my posts on this page for more info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1281777&page=11
It would be helpful to know how much screen time you are getting. You can access this by clicking "Display" in the screens you have posted above. Your battery is dying incredibly quickly. If your screen time is less than 2.5 hours you may have a rogue app that is running up your cpu. Use CPU Spy and better battery stats to help diagnose.
Sounds like you are such a power user that you might want to consider one of the 3500mah batteries. If you don't mind the size that is. Search the accessories forum to make sure you order the right brand as some cause boot loops. You will also lose NFC.
Good luck!

thanks for the replies everyone.

I'm not expecting a full day of battery life, but 4 and a half hours of usage in undeniably on the short side. Thank you for the insight on deep sleep etc. I'm newish to android and appreciate a skilled user's input.
As for flashing a rom, I'm really waiting for an Ice cream sandwich release before going that route. I'm aware of underclocking etc but think that I might get better results by getting the extended battery.

I think i'll need 3500mah too. I'm aware of the boot loop stuff, but I can't find clarification on whether the battery i'm looking at ( ebay link ) will have those problems or not... I would like advice on that.

Time on: 2h 57m 20s
I will look into those 2 apps.

This is what I have for today with better battery stats.

/\ were you using the GPS? I was for most of my 4 hours of life.
what were you doing with your 2 hour 26 min of screen on time?

Hmmmm, 3 hours of screen on time sounds about right for the battery life you are experiencing. As far as that particular battery, I'm not sure... I would play it safe and purchase one people are linking to in some of the threads that are confirmed as working. The other thing you have to consider is cover fit- which is another reason to go with one people have posted experience with in one of the "Accessories" threads.
BTW: Not sure but the Waze app may be utlize GPS in a way that it consumes more battery than it posts in your battery usage. Not sure though.
Also, are you leaving the screen on unnecessarily, like while listening to a podcast. That's a pretty intense amount of screen usage for such a short period.
Let me know what you decide

Just for Reference
Here's my usage with the 2000mah Korean Battery.

Screen is off during podcasts, on during GPS. Waze affects my battery about as much as the google Maps/Navigation app.
As for the battery, I've heard others buying batteries that have been $50 and up, I could buy 4 of the ones i'm looking at for that price.
Someone out there must have tried this battery before.... I'd like to hear what they say first.

Install BBS (link) and cpuspy (link) today and then tomorrow make sure to reboot your phone before unplugging and doing your daily routine.
Once your battery reaches 20% post the BBS dump and screenshots so we can analyze it better and see what is draining your battery so much and how to improve it while you wait for your new battery.
I highly recommend flashing a UnNamed or ShoStock since it removes bloat and also SetCPU to lower the volts and set some profiles.
You said your new to android, so listen to others that have used it longer.
PS. Ice Cream Sandwich will be a while so don't hold your breath...

I use gps for about a minute today. Most of my screen on time is messaging web surfing facebook and twitter

Was your screen at max brightness or autobrightness? Autobrightness tends to set the screen way too bright.
After all, your battery history indicates 74% of the usage was display - so I think you may just have the brightness way up.
Full brightness + GPS + CPU usage is brutal on the battery, that brings total current consumption to somewhere around 650 mA. (On the Infuse, the battery would slowly discharge with a 600 mA charger at fullbright + GPS. The GSII just barely keeps ahead with 650 mA charge current.)

I'm getting between 26-32 hrs with the config in my sig.

Alot of good advice in this thread! I highlighted above what I think is killing your battery. Go with a debloated stock like ROM, research a bit on cpu schedulers and go with a conservative one, turn the brightness down and you will be on your way to duplicating your battery life. ;

Use Siyah kernel and the Thunderbolt (TB) script. They'll do wonders for your battery. As for brightness use auto or half way. We're lucky to have such boss screen with crazy brightness. anything above 70% hurts my eyes in doors lol. Auto should be 90% effective for your day to day use. Also try to avoid apps that sync or fetch data constantly and set things to push or to auto-update every 3-6hrs instead of 15min-1hr. Those murder ur battery.

I was one notch down from max brightness. I'm going to scale it back to around 50% as many people are recommending that.

Other than that it is always set to 816/216.
I usually get about 5 hours screen time and about 20 hours standby. Email and Calender sync at 1 hr, with a custom power profile that turns data off after 15 minutes between 3a-9a. I'm happy with it

Your profiles are similar to what I use, although I don't have one for charging/charging A/C
Also, you run 816/216 rest of the time? Aren't you short-changing your phone's capabilities a bit though ... ? I find the biggest different is having screen-off profile.

Not really. I change it to 1000/216 if it's spectral souls, gun bros or a benchmark. Angry birds plays on my fuze (lol) so i don't change it there. I have noticed little to no difference running 1000/216 on launcher screens, pictures, data rates or anything versus 816/216. If i bump it down to the 700 range then things get laggy, but as it sits 816 runs everything almost flawlessly.

Good to know, thanks! I'll try that, maybe squeeze out a little more battery life than I am now What are you averaging? I can go about 1.5 days with good usage as it stands
Strange, I can't have more than 15 hours if moderate usage...
I have similar profiles to the screenshot posted above, but I don't have one for when powered. The main profile on mine is 1000 max ~400 min. I've found that keeping the min ~400 makes the device always snappy without sacking much battery life.
I also use JuiceDefender to manage my data syncing. I leave the blur battery profile at high performance.

Depends on the day. If its a day off, i get ~30 hours with ~6 hours screen time from 100%-10%. Most days though i don't notice much, I drive around a lot listening to pandora in my car dock so its constantly being charged
If I can tear myself away from pandora for a day i'll repost something more meaningful.
On a side note, I notice with circle battery widget I usually get the slowest drain between 80% and 40%, not sure if anyone else has noticed this.
Small update to what I said earlier..
With my profiles, and all the crap running in the background this is what i got now from 100%-31%
1d3h11m since unplug
1d0h25m idle time
3h04m display
0h45m spectral souls (!)
Would go further but I am gonna be away from a charger all day tomorrow
i get the same battery life with setcpu and a display off profile than with no setcpu at all. my guess is that the battery saved gets wasted on setcpu itself.
I have the phone on from 7:30am to 12 midnight with no calls and 1 hour display time and i have just 40% less. No wifi at anytime.
Apps i only have gmail, no other email accounts, twitter at 15 minutes and whatsapp

Yes, my question was pretty straight forward...what kernel are you running. From your response I see your English may be the issue here.
Anyway, reason I ask is because some kernels such as BFS kernels don't really play nice with my phone nor battery. So maybe the issue is with the kernel being used.

/sigh. XDA, a wealth of information, but a lack of patience and reading comprehension.
Anyway, I feel like the Atrix does better than the Evo with battery life. I might try fiddling with SetCPU, so thanks for the info.
HTC Desire with stock Froyo ROM
I've been using SetCPU 2.1.1a recently and have noticed no difference in battery life. Is SetCPU a placebo as far as battery life is concerned?
My settings:
Charging = Max. 998 / Min. 998
Screen Off = Max. 245 / Min. 245
Battery < 101% = Max. 998 / Min. 245
Battery < 25% = Max. 499 / Min. 245
If I "Disable Perflock" SetCPU says "Success: Perflock appears to be disabled".
Some say it increases their battery life, are they imagining it? I'm not interested in over clocking. I'd be very willing to buy it, if it increased my battery life. Thanks
Why are people using Setcpu to try to save battery life?
The whole point of Tegra 2 is ultra low voltage operation when the system is inactive..
Its absolutely counter-productive to use setcpu to try to already do what the chipset itself is made to do and not half as effectively.

This thread is covering more than the Atrix. I didn't want to start yet another thread about this, when there are already plenty. Besides the main SetCPU thread (with the download links) is in the HTC Dream section and that phone's ancient.

I Have Achieved Awesome Battery Life - Going on 19 hours!

I've done a bunch of different things to my phone to achieve this. I owe most of this result to scripts I have developed, I've put a lot of research into these, as well as my build.prop (Google "0vermind build prop" for that), I am not even using the memory values of supercharger, etc. I will probably be posting my scripts soon and how I did this, but just wanted to give a heads up. Long live the best phone ever made! The Droid x2!

Nice..looking forward to your work..
Now this is with what kind of use?
I can do regular texting, a little web search and marketplace downloads/updates and have around 19 hours and be around 20% with just the normal tweaks. (Probably 40% usage, 60% idle). I set the data saver to trigger at 11 PM (even though I always use it until late into the next morning) but by the time data saver is off (8 AM) the phone probably dropped 10-15% if I rarely used it. I'm wondering if this is at all any good since my idle is around 85% at all times so it looks like you trimmed that down.
This being my first smartphone, I think the actual standbye time is great but usage time is awful.
*edit: Just checked and running 2 Hours on battery and dropped 10% so I have no clue whats going on. I've noticed this phones battery is really random.

Mines been pretty consistent, and I've had wifi on most of the time, if you look at the screens. I don't text using standard texting app, I use Google Voice, which is said to use more battery cause it has to send a keep alive signal and it constantly redownloads messages.
That being said, I also have Trillian sitting in the background and have it on 24/7. It notifys me of texts, vms, calls from my business number, plus facebook. And I made a few calls, some short, some long. All that, 19 hours, and still 20% to spare. Heavy use still lasts pretty dang long.
And, if you look at my awake times, my phone never really goes into deep sleep when the screen is off, and it's suppose to, I think this is a software bug in Motorola's build of Gingerbread for x2. That's why I think I'm pretty impressed right now with this beast! Oh and Quadrant scores around 2900.
I have excellent battery life with my x2, the key to me was not using any of motoblur's social networking integration.. It consistantly runs and just gums everything up.. I use the facebook app and twitdeck when i want too, but dont let them update automatically (aka no unneeded connections to the web to download crap i can just manually update)..
Ever since then i get 2 full days out of battery usage if i need..
Since moving to Gingerbread I've been able to push the phone to almost 24hrs between charges, on very light usage days. This is with bg data services running (Sync on, corp email sync, Trillian, weather updates, etc...) If I'm using the phone for any significant portion of the day this drops considerably.
All I've done is frozen most of the Motorola/Verizon bloat.
The next opportunity I have to basically ignore my phone for 24hrs I will post screenshots to prove it.
That's with light usage though? I use my phone pretty heavily at times. Cause as you know from my signature, I run a business, lol.
I'm a heavy use phone user and I use my phone as my home phone. I've rooted and killed the motocrap with fire. I use setcpu to handle better CPU throttling and achieve 24+ hours on a single charge. I don't have any doubts the heavy battery use stems from the motocrap. I just cannot wait until CM7 or another minimalist rom becomes available with overclocking.

Do you happen to have any problems with setcpu actually making the processer stay within the range you set? It seems that no matter where I set the min/max it stays there for maybe half hour max then goes to whatever speed it wants to. The sliders don't change spots, the cpu just doesn't stay within the value set after a half hour. Can't future out why.

I am not trying to overclock. I am trying to keep my speeds lower to help save battery which I have been told IS possible. I know I can't go faster than 1ghz but I thought I would be able to keep it from reaching that to save battery life. Am I wrong

I'm not so sure that the stock kernel will allow for any tweaking of clock speeds. I think you have to have a custom kernel to implement any clock or scheduler changes.

Not sure about that one... I use profiles to handle the changes rather than forcing the speed ranges through the set sliders. The profiles seem to work better anyway, they react to active content rather than set-in-stone performance. One thing to note, the profiles are only available in the paid version (IIRC). Changing the profiles would be similar to handling the changes manually or through custom scripting routines. Right now, I'm going on 15+ hours with 70% of my battery left. I had the OG Droid running over five days on a single charge. What I do different from those saying 1 day max charge, I have no clue.
So ETA on script release?

I shall try profiles then. I do have paid version. Thanks for the tip.
I consistently get 20+ hours with a stock battery, no scripts of any kind, with moderate use and data always connected. All I've done to achieve this is de bloat the hell out of the system apps, set my screen brightness to minimum (the thing its so dang bright anyways, you can hardly tell once you get used to the minimum setting) my wifi is set to never disconnect (I pretty much have a wifi connection 95% of the time) that's about it. I use adwEX, plume for twitter (polls every 3 minutes) gmail, google voice for visual voicemail, moderate amount of widgets (clockr, fancy widget pro, system panel, power control, uk news), I'm even running a live wallpaper (vortex galaxy, set to 100% speed).

You Can Underclock.
So here I am, finally hitting 50% 1d 5h 10m and a few seconds. I wonder what this would be like on the extended battery?

What's your average battery life?

I've found it harder than I thought to try and compile battery statistics...however, that being said, what kind of times are you guys able to get, say with average levels of use?
I think the most relevant stat is the one for screen on time, the screen seems to be the biggest killer of battery.
In my most recent use, Better Battery Stats tells me that I've been on the battery for approximately 1 day and 12 hours, and that only 5 of those hours have been for the screen on. I'm now down to 15% battery, so in general, I think that 5-7 hours of screen-on time (with the lowest brightness) is what I usually manage.
How.about the rest of you guys?
how do you work out how many hours the screen has been on?
i mostly use my flyer as an ereader during the week...i get about 4 days usage from 100% to 20%, and have airplane mode on mostly

I use a very useful app called Battery Monitor Widget. I highly reccomend it. Its able to split my usage between awake time, screen on time, wifi on time, and Bluetooth on time.
That sounds about right for me as well, 5-7 hours of active usage. Obviously depends on what you're doing, but I use it extensively and struggle to get more than 7 or less than 5.

Yes. So from our two experiences, 5-7 with screen-on time is somewhat standard. This is why I'm somewhat bemused when people say they've been using the battery for a week! I'm left wondering...were they using less than an hour of screen-on time each day?
If 5-7 hours of screen-on is the average, then my definition of light-to-moderate usage is when I can stretch that out to two days before recharging. Keep in mind that my 5-7 stat is with screen brightness on the lowest setting, and with Juice Defender.
battery depends on use. I have had it last 48 hours with 6 hours screen time and I have had it go in 16 hours with 3 hours screen time. With all the diferent variations of this device, as well as custom roms/kernels and GB vs HC I am not certain there can be an expected battery life span

Yes, I think 5-7 of screen-on time is about standard.
I ran my test and used my Flyer (wifi only) mostly for light work. It lasted 11 days. I mostly used it for notes, quickly checked website couple of times a day and read emails. I have played a game once for 20 minutes and another 20-30min were spent on Plex and Google Music. Screen was on for 4h13m. Wifi on for 16H.
Here is what I figured from that test:
Runtime: 10D 20H = 260H
Idle: 43%. I didn't check how many hours it said it was on idle. But let's say 250H. 43%/250H= 0.172% per hour (standby). That's 4.128% per day. That's very consistent with my observation. So, if you run Flyer for 10 days, you will spend 41% just to have it on standby. It will die in about 24 days, even if you didn't use it at all.
Screen-on (Auto brightness): 4h 13m = 4.22H. In 260H it ate 40% battery. 40%/4.22H = 9.479% per hour. So in theory (haven't tested this), you can get around 9-10 hours reading books(?).
Watching movie also puts load on the cpu and power goes to deliver sound, so I would say you will be using around 12-15% per hour. Probably around 20% per hour while streaming. A lot depends on sound level and video material. Also choice on the player and codecs used might make a bit of a difference.
I get about 4 hours of video or 7-8 hours of internet browsing / kindle reading.

agree with mcord,
it would be better instead of comparing randomly to mention :
Device Type : Flyer WiFi, Flyer 3G or Evo View
ROM : custom/ stock ROM + Kernel Info + CPUSet
Customization : or tweak or additional widget (Juice Defender, Better Battery Safer)
then the usage of application and hours spent, something like this.

Device : Flyer 3G + Wifi (wasn't brand new, so i cannot figure out the previous owner flyer usage)
ROM : LeeDroid 4.1.0 HC + Kernel 2.2.0 + SetCPU scaling on smartassV2
Costum : using HC Launcher with out any additional Widgets and no additional Android apps for preserving battery
Runtime:
Screen On - Lowest Brightness + WIFI and 3G always on : 3 hours with 55 % left, mainly using on e-reader, taking notes, market access.(no multimedia usage)
I had around over 7 hours after i switch to the airplane mode in the last 7% battery left, with similar usage.
Hope this helps for utilize the battery lifespan.
I have a brand new Flyer 3G and I get about 4 hours of mixed use out of it (Airplanemode with wifi enabled, lowest brightness, 70% browsing, 30% video). I'm running stock HC 3.55.405.1 with root. No OC or custom kernel. Do I have a faulty battery? Seem like most of you get better battery life. 70% of the battery is used by the display according to battery stats. Is this normal?

If you are using it for 4-5 hours straight, then yeah that is probably normal. You might also need your battery calibrated if that is your first time. It learns and configures itself a few times after you charge it.

If people are reporting 5-7 hours display on time, and you're getting 4 hours with 30% video, then no, I wouldn't say that that's unusual.
This is tragic. Such a great tab with such a big flaw. The iPad 2 has a 7000mAh battery and the screen area is twice as big, not to mention a much more powerful soc, and you get about ten hours use no matter what you're using it for.
Gotta be a bit more fair in your comparison. That was like comparing a house cat to a bobcat.
In all 7" tablets (including non-androids), I feel that right now the contender is the the express/flyer is the only one that reigns on top for the past year, and can't be beat for only ~$250 in today's market. The only thing the A100's have going for it are the AOSP experience, the Xoom is a direct competitor.
But if you want to compare battery life, the tf101 and prime as well as A5/A6's got this beat by a mile. Not to mention higher resolutions. Point is, these are arguments extraneous of a 7"incher tab.

Yeah, I guess I was a bit unfair. I'm just a bit disappointed.. Expected a little more juice from the battery. Anyway, for 2500NOK(about 450$) it's not a bad deal. Btw the pen is included in Norway(and other European countries, I think). And the pen is the reason I got the flyer. It's almost as good as using a Wacom board for drawing. I just hope HTC doesn't abandon the flyer or have done so already. It would be nice with ICS.

I knew I forgot something!
Rooted View, Gingerbread, GoLauncherEX. I disable the cell radio on each boot.
-About 33% screen brightness
-WiFi on
-Sync on
-Cell radio off
-Bluetooth off
-Location off
My View gets unplugged from the charger each morning, rides ~12 miles to work through non-WiFi country, sits on my desk at work and gets used maybe 60 min total at work, then goes home with me and gets occasional to moderate use browsing and reading mostly. By the time I go to bed and plug it in around midnight I am usually at about 20% battery. Less if I've been gaming a lot or watching video.
So all together my View is on battery for about 16 hours a day but only used 3 or 4.
I went on an overnight trip a few weeks ago and by turning WiFi off when I was on the road the View maintained battery life well.

[Q] Battery life

Hi guys i finally managed how to root a s2 duo the dramatic battery life.
I installed the Setcpu and underclocked my s2.
But it only makes 10 hour or even less. My brother has also a S2 and his battery life goes like 2 and a half day without root just a stock rom. He uses his s2 only to whatsapp and internet browsing like hell just like me. And his batttery life is 2 days
My question how do i get that battery life like 2 days, its really annoying charging the s2 when you want go outside with a low battery.
I got also screenshot of my S2 setting and info:

(Sorry for bad english)
so your brother uses his phone to whatsapp and browsing only?
you must be doing so much more stuff to manage to drain it in 10 hours....hell even i get 1d 12hours at least with my ICS rom
also how does he do the whatsapp thing? via 3g or wifi
we need so much more details in order to give you a decent help
the amount of apps/widgets also decrease/increase ur battery life
Download betterbatterystats and check if your phone goes in to deep sleep..
Otherwise you might have some app or something else keeping it awake all the time even if the display is off.

From my experience, 3G is the battery killer. When I am on 3g network I get 9 hours until the phone shuts down. THis is with email checking when it is pushed ( 20-30 messages) and about 15 minute of calls and random 4sq check ins.
When I am on GSM only, connected to EDGE rather than 3g i get a bout 1.5 days with a lot greater use.
If I am at home all day and stay connected on wi-fi, I seem to get the best battery usage.
Coming from a BlackBerry this is a bit strange as the Wi fi was the one that used to drain the battery.
My brother uses his s2 always on the wifi and outside of course the 3g signal.

Hi. This is rather long and I wasn't prepared as I wrote but just simply went on with every thought. Skipping to the summary, where the bold text is, is useful for the majority of people and the entire post is intended for new people though there are some things I haven't yet seen discussed here.
I was actually reading the whole thread which dates back a bit rather slowly and wanted to give some of my experience with my battery.
First off, it seems pretty typical that when a phone is struggling to keep a connection or when there's a lot of fluctuation on 3G, then battery suffers. This was something that was really apparent for me on the SGS2 since I could more easily isolate that one issue and have a look. At the same time, though, I've found that after switching to a good solid provider in my area, who has a consistency of signal and an abundance of towers etc etc, that it made far less difference than prior if I was on 3G or 2G. I think that its actually now negligible and although I haven't tested being on 2G alone since I no longer need to, I suspect that the battery savings isn't going to effect me personally as I keep full bars or close to it most of the time now. If I go back to the previous carrier then of course it would and I'd have the same problem all over again and would be pissed off and keeping myself restricted to GSM, which sucks.
Another thing that I've found, is that every phone really must be uniquely different when it comes to undervolting, setting the governer, and even more specifically just using a custom kernel opposed to a stock kernel, or for root and CWM, one that's compiled as stock with the root goodies added by Chainfire.
I really should break this into 2 separate things.
To simplify the last paragraph, its commonplace, for example with intel or AMD processors that they might all get the same production line process but that there's such a narrow margin for error, that what's deemed acceptable for various speeds and voltages are then labeled as differant processors when they go to market, so the 3 ghz version of a processor is often the same factory result as the 1.5 ghz version and there just happened to be limitations put on the 1.5 ghz version afterward so that it simply could not go any faster as it wasn't the best batch of cookies to come out of the oven, or perhaps the L2 or L3 cache didn't turn out on one batch so part of the thing gets zapped off by a laser and marketed under a differant name.
Getting to the point, there's a lot of custom kernels and various threads about how to get the most out of these kernels. For some people this is the gold nugget but in my case it happens to be that if I want to be rooted and have the best power management while pulling adequate benchmarking numbers then the smartest thing I can do is just stick with the kernel that matches my phone that Chainfire has compiled. As I understand it he uses the same configuration file and complier options as Samsung (or gets as close as he can to it), and adds the components needed for the rooting process.
Since I'm not very smart, and have tried to save battery using Siyah various times with various settings of my own and posted by other people, only to find that my phone's personal temperment is to drain faster, I still continue to try other things and most recently the Red Pill kernel.
While trying a variety of settings with Red Pill last night and benchmarking over and over again, I found that quite simply there's a lot going on which effects the performance of the benchmark score, but even more importantly, and this took a while to notice, that undervolting to levels that didn't by any means cause crashes did not mean better battery or better benchmarks. Where it did benchmark better I found that in my case there can be a huge placebo effect because the in between scores aren't getting looked at as much, for example if I undervolt too much at 500 800 and 1000 then my phone tends to not even use those steps as much and the obvious result of this is going to be too much jumping straight from 200 to 1200 even if I'm just screwing around and flicking the home screens back and forth. This obviously will not save battery. Further to that, I felt that although the GPU can handle a larger undervolt at both settings and a larger undervolt at the lower one, that my phone's performance was much better when both of those things had less of a gap, both in speed and in voltage and went less aggressively there as well. I still have the Red Pill kernel installed and think I have reasonable values however it took quite a lot of testing, hours of it, and the jury is still out and for the most important reason as it applies to my phone which is as follows:
When I first got the phone there was a lot of talk about calibrating the battery. There's apps that will wipe a file (yes I know this is very repetitive for a lot of people but I'm writing it for those that are new) that has to do with battery calibration. You can also do it from recovery in CWM. The file will also get wiped sometimes by something you flash, for example cleaning scripts, some kernel installs might do this (I'm not sure if its wise or necissary when using a new kernel or ROM; I leave mine alone now unless something else does it).
I spent a lot of time trying to get better battery life by calibrating my battery the "proper" way, when it was completely charged, and even when it was just about to die entirely. This has always been not only fruitless, but counterproductive. I've read that the file gets deleted automatically when the battery is full and the power cable is unplugged but I'm skeptical about that as I've found that I get quite noticeably better (significant in my case) battery life when I leave it alone and let it do its own thing for at least 3 charges. That doesn't mean discharging it entirely 3 times, but that just using it as normal a few times brings it into its own all by itself. Calibrating the battery seems (to me) to actually screw this up which means another few times of use before I'm even with a clue of how a kernel (new ROM or custom kernel) is going to be on the battery.
To summarize my experience:
- Custom Kernels appear great for some people but every chip on every phone is differant. In my case sticking close to stock has been the way to go. The best I have so far done is adjusted the conservative governor to be a little snappier than default. I quite honestly got very irritated at one point at all the kernels that pop up and all the settings threads because I expected that I was going to have the same experience as other people were reporting.
- Undervolting sounds effective in theory, but its important to look at how your phone uses various frequencies according to your habits and make sure you haven't fallen into a sitiuation similar to mine where undervolting resulted in me skipping up a frequency to quickly and thus using more power. Additionally, reducing the gap between my voltage values and the gap in the frequencies I had created with my GPU settings resulted in better performance and specifically less work for the CPU.
- Battery Calibration may or may not have its place when it comes to new ROMs or Kernels (I don't know), but Calibration in general is not something the phone requires and further to that (in my observation) just makes it drain faster for a few recharges. The longer I don't calibrate it, the better.
I was at one time not pulling a full day out of my phone. Today, admittedly with the samsung 2000 mah extendable battery though, which is 20% more juice, I can pull 24 hours (as a low number to use) with 5 hours of screen time (also a low number; its more like 6 hours screen and more than 24 hours but varies depending upon how I've used it). When I first got the thing I was calibrating a lot and 5 hours of screen time I don't think would have been possible at all. If you think your phone is a lemon, you may very well just need some patients with it. I have had my original battery in it and using it more patiently as well, and although it wasn't long enough to give out accurate numbers I knew that it would have been just fine had I had to continue using the original battery.
One last thing, I typically freeze wifi sharing and Samsung's email and so forth but have noticed in more recent ROMs that these additions are getting to be more and more negligible. I would unfreeze wifi sharing if I thought I would ever use it.
A final thought for benchmarking is to look carefully at how you use your phone first, in respect to what voltages are used most often, then adjusting each frequency individually. If I undervolt too much at my top frequency then the phone doesn't crash, but it also doesn't score as well. It may be better to find the ideal spot by doing each frequency seprately and individually, then worrying about how things scale, as previously mentioned.
I've found that I get quite noticeably better (significant in my case) battery life when I leave it alone and let it do its own thing for at least 3 charges. That doesn't mean discharging it entirely 3 times, but that just using it as normal a few times brings it into its own all by itself.
That is the correct method battery recalibrates itself .The stats play no part in the calibration process or how long a battery lasts .

How's your battery life?

I recently switched to the Galaxy Note from the Xperia Play... I've noticed that with full charge, my Note gets around 5-6 hours of battery life after medium to heavy usage.. I was wondering if this is the norm for most of you guys? I have my screen dim and I usually turn wifi, bluetooth, and GPS off when not in use...

Mine is fantastic. All day easily even overclocked to 1.83. I'm rooted, Saurom, bloatware removed.
This was like the 2nd or third day I had mine. Lots of tweaking and setting up and "Oh yeah, I forgot about that app". Also over an hour of voice calling, 100 or so texts, and Google Listen to and from work (around 45 minutes total).

39% after 11 hours of fairly heavy use.
Edit - That is also rooted/rom'ed/overclocked.

Mine is fantastic 22 hours and heavy use 3-4 hours display time at 50%, 200 emails.
Download CPU Spy from the Market and see if your phone is going into Deep Sleep (known and documented issue). If not search for deep sleep follow the steps and enjoy awesome battery life..

Thanks I'll definitely check that out right now..
Mine is great - been unplugged for 7 hours already, and with moderate use it's at 72%.
phone is decent over the course of a day but I notice that battery drain is pretty severe when the screen is on. I leave it on auto brightness so I'm sure I can save juice reducing to minimum as much as possible but that makes my phone less than ideal. I need it to automatically work and not having to fiddle with brightness just because I stepped outside.

What's your definition of moderate? While I don't doubt that you're experiencing solid batt life, terms like "good" and "bad" and "moderate" are SUPER subjective, and because no two phones are truly the same (as are no two coverage areas), I'd really be interested to know how you qualify the way you use the phone.
Not breaking stones here, just saying that you might possibly hold the world Note record for best battery life if you really are using the phone for more than just a minute or two here and there, and for more than just text, email and the occassional website or P2P word game and in a solid coverage area (not WiFi)....
Please advise-
Ryan

Sounds like I have to check this out.
Is anyone getting battery drain while charging in the car while using the GPS?
I'm using the stock rom, with the overclock kernel but the cpu isn't touched as far as overclocking is concerned. I wasn't sure if it was the overclock or not... and its not the overclock. Anyone else have this issue?

What kind of car charger are you using?
Turn off wifi when the screen is off automatically; go into your wifi settings, hit MENU, then choose 'advanced' and go into 'WiFi Sleep Policy.'
Set it to when your screen turns off, or alternatively 'Never when plugged in.'
If you normally leave Wifi on and you drive a lot (say, to work), you're constantly scanning WiFi signals. This will cut that out.
It's made my LG Thrill quite a bit more usable, and the Note went from good to great battery life.

A dual USB cigarette lighter adapter, and using my data cable. It worked fine with my old Captivate without draining it.

Let me see if I can find a high end AC to USB charger adapter. I need two, my iPod battery is dead and it needs power to turn on for longer than 10 minutes.
That is a steal though, that's a REALLY good price for that. I, however, already have a dual AC 400 Watt adapter. I am just trying to make it as simple as possible.
EDIT: I found something that I am going to order, and hope for the best.

It has 2.1A across each usb port. I know for a fact that my dinky little $10 usb adapter that I got, does not pull that. I will test with a multimeter before I go ahead and order this, but I can imagine if the USB is 500mAH or less, that's exactly why I am having this issue.
I'll post more info tonight or tomorrow.
I got a Scosche portable battery charger. It came with a special usb adapter that fools the Note into high current charge mode (960mah). Unless pins 2 and 3 are shorted, the Note will not accept more than 500 mah from even a 2.1 A usb port.
You can modify a usb cable to do this but I use the Scosche adapter that came with my battery 5000 mah to charge Galaxy TABs.
If it supports the Galaxy TAB, I presume that it will support the Note.

I just did a bit of research after reading this, and soldered pins 2 and 3 together on my griffin jolt duo. Works like a champ now
Thank you
Decent use. Enough for me
