ASUS has touted Wi-Fi Direct http://www.asus.com/News/k4PosV90YN1qdjZ3/ as one of the features present on the Transformer Prime. For those of you who are not familiar, Wi-Fi Direct is basically a means of establishing an ad-hoc Wi-Fi connection without the need for a router or one device acting as a hotspot and was just introduced into Android 4.0.
I've had the chance to use it on multiple occasions, transferring huge files between two Galaxy S II devices and all I can say is the speed is much, MUCH faster than Bluetooth, such that transferring 2GB can be done within a reasonable time frame like that of a meal. Also, it doesn't consume anywhere near as much battery as using one device as a hotspot and then transferring files between them.
So my question is, has anyone found a way to access the WiFi Direct functionality we all supposedly have on our Transformer Primes? Given the spottiness of MTP/PTP, having another reasonably fast way to get files on/off the device can only make things better!

yea, i've been really excited about this, but google doesn't seem to have it finalized yet from what i understand. It will make printing about 50x easier in the workplace since chrome is not commonplace and chrome is required for cloudprint
So is this why we don't have an option in our settings as opposed to the Galaxy SII?

I guess ASUS ment that te Prime's wifi chip DOES suppot that. but the software need too. and Gingerbread dosen't.
On the Galaxy S2 it's the same thing. only Samsunge made special apps for themselfs and that was build in the system (in the TouchWiz). No other 3-rd party project can access that thing and build other Apps. Only when the Galaxy wil have ICS update. exaclly like here....

This is actually not true. I own the Galaxy Nexus and currently there is no way to actually use WiFi Direct without an app. Even the core Android apps don't make use of it. Pretty useless feature up until Google or the developers start releasing apps that make use of it.

I managed to start bluetooth on nookie froyo, BT scan is working well(on command line), sometimes it shows devices in the android gui.
The steps : ( use at your own risk and only for comfirmed devs)
Add bluetooth capabilities (HCILL) in kernel
Toggle the WL12XX_RFKILL flag on in evt1a defconfig.
Take the bluetooth firmware (bts file) from gforge.ti ( wl1271 firmware) for froyo pandroid and put it into /system/lib/firmware, alias /lib/firmware to /system/lib/firmware (useful for command line).
boot the kernel
and then
echo 0 >/sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/state
echo 1 >/sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/state
hciattach -s 115200/dev/ttyS1 texas
hcitool scan must show you your BT devices (if discoverable)
Stability is not yet here, Maybe some problems with UART high speed handling ?
This is very positive, it seems that the wl1271 chip is well connected to omap3621...

Forgive my ignorance on the subject but what does this mean? maybe the remote possibility of finally being able to use skype and actually talk with a bluetooth earpiece/headset?
That means, IMHO:
1) The hardware is in fact connected. One less thing wait for the salting crew to find.
2) It is possible bluetooth can now be activated in software, since the devs now know it is not a complete waste of time trying to activate hardware that is present but not live.
3) This guy freakin' rocks!

I'm definitely looking forward to being able to use a BT mic + A2DP audio. Now that Clockwork recovery is mostly working, it's going to be great when a 2.2/2.3 custom ROM is out there to just flash and get all this stuff working and easily installed/reproducible.

I have a hunch that B&N may officially add this in the 2.2 update to make it either look better in a marketing sense (why they would have it off I do not know except... * ) or to go with some fancy accessory.
*They might have it off due to a radio licencing fee they would have to pay or something... No firm data on this IMO just an observation.

You might be able to tether your android phone's GPS to your NC using Bluetooth with an app in the market called BlueNMEA and an app called Bluetooth GPS in the market. Bluetooth GPS allows your android device to use an external Bluetooth NMEA compatible GPS with apps that require a GPS, like Google Maps. So if you put BlueNMEA on your phone and turned your phone into the antenna and then put Bluetooth GPS on your phone to receive the signal, it might work.

They probably left it off because, right now, the Nook Color is not open to 3rd-party software. There's nothing available (officially) that can use it, so there's no reason to spend development resources getting it running.
Hello, i am starting to become paranoid about going outside with my galaxy tab because i am afraid it might get stolen. I am looking for a good app to let me track any possible thieves like the ones ive seen many times for pc, that let you get the almost exact location where the lost item (phone, pc etc) is and automatically take pictures and screen captures.
The ome iwanted to try is Prey (because it a chilean software, hehe) but for android devices it only tracks the position, but nothing else, and i think it is kind of usseles as yiu dont get a 100% accurate position and it is usseles if the adress you get is a building with 100+ people living in it.
Also another issue with prey and othe simmilar software is the they only work on android cellphones where you have to send a text message to activate the tracking mode, but i cannot do that in a wifi inly galaxy tab.
So, do you guys have any recommendation for a nice software? I am lookin for so ething simple that runs in the background and doesnt disturb me. (and of course.... Free)

Samsung actually have features built into the gal tab 10.1 for this.
Go to samsungdive.com. If you are signed into your samsung account on your tab, then you can start using it straight away i think.
In terms of other software, androidlost has heaps of features for free. It doesn't rely on text messaging. The design is pretty terrible, but hey, its free.
Lookout has a product called plan b. It always you to install the app remotely and tell you where it's at. But needs an Internet connection.
I don't think its honeycomb compatible but its one to watch out for.

Lookout seemed like a good alternative but it is not supported on tablets.....
I also gave a look at some of this applications (http://lifehacker.com/5832947/five-best-phone-recovery-tools) but they are all phone-related.
Guess we just have to wait a little more for some apps to be released for wifi-only devices............

Very cool, and it's free. It can take snapshots from the camera, use closest wifi spot to send ip address and info, you can sound an alarm or lock the device out. There are a lot of options. It allows 3 devices for the free version.
yeah, i also like prey, but it doesnt work with the wifi only tab as it requires and SMS to be sent to the device for activation

It does work. You first have to add your samsung account on the tab. under settings then accounts/sync, add account, then click samsung account. Its the only way samsung knows you actually have a samsung device. Btw it works pretty good. Best of all, its free,

Hi, so what would you recommend to find one left on plane, with sim card but in airplane mode, wait and see if someone gets through the security to see where it is or is there a way of forcing the tab to turn itself on?

As long as there is battery, you can track your device's location, log app activity, send a message/VERY audible alarm to the device, take a screenshot, take a picture with front or back camera, a few other options. Obviously, app needs to be loaded on the device BEFORE you lose it.

They do not run on android, unless you somehow got ahold of a brand new 2013 model that is based on the same firmware in Vizio's Co-Star (the Google TV box by Vizio) - and I'm not even sure the new line of TVs will be 'GoogleTV based', I just know they plan on dropping Yahoo... hopefully that firmware is retro-active and I can upgrade to it... doubtful, very doubtful, but still - hopefully?
My Vizio E3D470VX uses Yahoo! internet TV services.... which (IMO) suck. From what probing has been done, it appears to run on Linux, possibly a modded version of Ubuntu which supports the Yahoo! TV apps... more like widgets in my opinion, but whatever at least its 3D.

Honestly I was kind of mad when I saw an article about the Co-Star Google TV box.... because it had the EXACT same remote sitting next to it, with the qwerty keyboard on the back, just like my remote has.... Only the qwerty keyboard on my remote never gets used and is pointless..... I really hope someone can hack this to run some form of android, or even a linux based XBMC add-on ... at the least some sort of custom firmware option... anything should be better than what it is, especially the interface for DLNA/UPNP and USB drives....
Simple solution: buy equiso from your local wal-mart. Plug it into the hdmi port in the back. From equiso, run any Android apps you want from the App Store. Need to have Wi-Fi or a wireless tether for internet access, FYI. Equiso runs Android 4.3 I believe.

I was wondering if any developers were working on porting s beam over to our devices? Android Beam lacks the feature of sending larger files so s beam kind of solves the problem. I hate having to go through settings to enable wifi direct and then manually connect to other devices and manually send files. I think it's actually pretty smart to have nfc establish this connection automatically.

I don't think its possible
Honestly it sounds more likely that someone would modify Android Beam to accommodate larger files and such, since its manufacturer agnostic.
This is not a solution but when jelly bwan comes out for the I1777 we will be able to send larger files.

We have Wifi direct and NFC, and some ROMs retain Touchwiz if TW dependencies exist with S Beam, so why wouldn't it be possible to port S Beam over? I think it would be both cool and useful if we could mod our phones to work with GS3s, and besides, there aren't many other current uses for NFC right now anyway.
Side note, what is the current file size limit for Android beam transferring?

From what I understand, when transferring media files with android beam, all it does is enable bluetooth and transfers via that. So, I don't think there would be a file size limit.

An initial search of the AOKP thread doesn't mention anything specific about S Beam, it seems to be only Android Beam. I'm just wondering about a full S Beam port, that would work with stock S3s and any other Samsung devices that include S Beam, especially since I've heard people have problems using Android Beam with S3s, which get confused. Samsung's Android devices are so prevalent nowadays, so it would be nice to be able to interact with them easily without having to fuss around with extra apps or settings. I just want to know if it's possible or not.
EDIT: So a little more research done. Android beam isn't a separate app but is built into ICS (guess I forgot that lol). It uses Bluetooth to share data and is limited to links and contacts (maps and YouTube videos fall under links, you don't beam the whole thing, you just beam the specific urls). Please correct me on that point if I'm wrong. This is already possible with S3s, I didn't know they retained Android beam in addition to SBeam, which uses wifi direct and can transfer larger files like pictures (it's faster too).
As useful as Android beam is because it works with all nfc-capable ICS devices, I still think a full S Beam port would prove useful since it can transfer larger files faster and with newer Samsung devices (of which there are now several, and they're the most popular). So is it possible? And if not, why not?

Fyi..this stuff is very old news. In Jellybean, you are now able to send larger files via android beam, such as audio and video. But files aren't actually transferred through android beam, all it does is activate bluetooth and automatically pair your device with the other phone to initiate transfer via bluetooth. S Beam is the same thing, except it activates wifi direct instead of bluetooth.
I'd give up on this whole s beam thing if I were you. I have not seen any devs ever mention implementing it on our phones.

Many Android kernels got support for traffic shaping, so you can use the "tc" shell command to implement what you need. Maybe there's some rooted app able to manage this for you, since it's quite a tricky task.
But this is not such a good idea. Instead you should implement the traffic shaping in your WiFi/Internet router. If it doesn't support it native, I suggest you try some other software for it, e.g. OpenWrt, DD-WRT or Tomato.

I have Tomato installed on an Asus RT-N66U router, but the bandwidth limiting options only work for LAN connections and not WLAN it seems.
A rooted app that puts a limit on a per app basis would be something I'd be happy to pay for.

Hard to believe it's not working for WLAN connections, and even if so, you can apply the rules on the outbound Internet connection scheduling on source addresses. I.e. you can chose to implement the restrictions on either the receive- or transmit site. Do some more reading on QoS and I'm quite sure you'll manage to implement it as you need. But it IS tricky, even with the Tomato GUI, and would be as tricky as well using a rooted Android app.
And since I know it's not a such a good idea to implement traffic shaping in the Android itself, I'm not going to write this app.
Hey, I'm looking over internet for this exact thing, problem is my Galaxy Tab is hugging my internet, I need to limit it to say, 100kb/s up and down. My router is A-Link WNAP 3G router.
It would be even better to limit all WLAN traffic to 100kB/s because my computer is hooked with an ethernet cable :victory:

You are very wrong that it isn't a good idea to implement traffic shaping. All new cloud applications have Camera upload feature which clogs the upload of the whole network and then you cannot even surf with your computer while photos are uploaded (not to say videos).
Traffic shaper would solve this things for sure! I would even pay for that app on appstore.
I used bandwidth ruler from the play store to limit upload speed in my galaxy SIII and it works like a charm. but that requires root to work ,

because i am looking for an App which can control all or Each/ individual app to upload the files. likewise
google+ Google photos, Google hangout, Etc. which i hate the most to upload my photos . for them i have rooted my note4 and install AVAST Anti-Virus + Firewall to prevent the app to access the net .
Because i know what app we allow to access the internet they take away our personal information along with videos and photos which we don't know because our smartphones are 24/7 connected with DSL hight speed internet.
These type of Apps are fully controlled by the remote server to takeaway our data with minimum speed like 10KB to 30KB per mint.
I have already block the apps to access in the internet, but some reason i have to disable firewall, then most of the apps try to get updates, i need an app which can control /allow the app to upload in Bites not in KB or MB.
if you have something like that please advise
