Is CM7 DX2 running a custom kernel? - Motorola Droid X2

I was reading how ICS has come to the original Droid Milestone via a CM9. Reading this post (http://www.mrmuh.com/2012/01/update-a-motorola-milestone-from-motorola-firmware-to-cyanogenmod-7/), it appears they have hijacked how the kernel is loaded.
So, my question is, is the current CM7 for DX2 running a custom kernel? I see the version is 2.3.7, so with the hijacking, did they "replace" the kernel kind of like how they do it for the Droid Milestone?
If this is true, then I'm assuming this will be the same thing for CM9 for the X2 if/when that comes out?
Just curious. I like to understand how things work. I guess that's why I program, but I'm not that proficient in Android programming, but I'm starting to learn that.
Thanks!

Nah, It runs the stock kernel. Don't quote me on this, but I believe they wouldn't run a custom kernel on CM9 for our phone either, they'd just add drivers to the stock one. Although, it would be much easier to get CM9 running if we could throw a custom kernel on there.

No new kernel until we get unlocked.. or really lucky, eh?

Okay. I was just reading this article which states that they have run a custom kernel on a locked phone:
http://www.mrmuh.com/2012/01/update-a-motorola-milestone-from-motorola-firmware-to-cyanogenmod-7/

There is a process called kexec which allows a custom kernel to be loaded into memory overwriting the current one. I am not a developer but would imagine this is very complicated to accomplish and why we don't see this happening more frequently with locked devices.

So I have a feeling that is what is going on with CM7 for the X2 then. So this definitely means we could see ICS someday.

I doubt it, if kexec was working for the x2 it would be a big deal, similar to2nd init. The "2.3.7" must be coming from a piece of code that was missed from the port. I'm just guessing here i really don't have a clue.

The kernel is the X2's stock kernel, which is from the SBF or Stock ROM running Android 2.3.4 (that's not the kernel version). 2.3.7 is the version of Android running on the phone with CM7.

A quote from the article.
CyanogenMod 7.1.2 for Milestone (the current version at the time of writing) runs Android 2.3.7 on the original Motorola boot partition (=kernel) from Android 2.2,

Seems to me that would indicate it's running 2.3.7 on the 2.2 (original) kernel.

Kexec isnt used in the CM7 hijack.
Sent from my MB870 using XDA App

We are definitely not able to run ANY kernel by ANY means other than one of the stock kernels that comes with a Motorola signed update.zip or sbf file
The 2.3.7 os the stock Android version that is run with cm7...its the android OS ...nothing to do with the kernel.
Things were changed so that cm7 would run correctly on the kernel that came with 2.3.4 os for the x2.
If we had custom kernel support AT ALL trust me ....u WOULDN'T have been able to overlook that lol

[Q] Leaked Gingerbread or Official Gingerbread from Moto/ATT

So, its mid July ...I'm sure the update for Gingerbread is coming ....but apparently ...mostly everyone has installed the leaked gingerbread...now I ask is it worth it to go back to stock to be able to download the new update if so how do I go back? What do I need to flash? This question has probably been answered but I couldnt find it...thanks.

Hello filmusikat,
I see that you're running gingerblur 4.5 on your atrix, so do i. You need to flash 4.1.8.3 official sbf and check for the gingerbread update regulary. I don't think the leaked gb roms are worth to spend time for now. They all have glitches which would effect daily usage.

Hi filmusikat!
The latest ROM has proven to be very stable:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1169409
The instructions are included within the thread. Not addressing the unlocking part since your signature already tells you got it.
As for being worthy, I say it is. I was in Gingerblur too, and the performance difference is big.

no glitches affecting any daily usage on me for 4.5.91. 100% functional, and 100% better than froyo.
Remains to be seen which version of GB will be the official release. The leaked versions everyone is flashing may not be the most current which will be offered up.
NOTE SHE/HE NEVER MENTION GB 4.5, actually if she/he indeed installed ota gb update.zip, with you instructions she/he will have a HARD BRICK
So first thing to find out is what actually she/he has installed

I've got to say I'm very pleased... I have Gingerbread beta 4-5, hotspot enabled, webtop working perfectly via webtop-joe, Netflix - streamingly like it should. My Atrix feels like it should have come out of the box like this. I honestly don't think within the next year or two they will release another operating system better than GB and by then I'd probably be upgraded to the newest phone AT&T has... "If you want to confirm your status, please adb, su, and "cat /sys/firmware/fuse/ReservedOdm" or just open the file in Root Explorer. If you see something like:
10000000000010001000300004000
Then you should NOT SBF anything from Motorola"
If you want to post your ReservedOdm to look and see if you will be fine to SBF 1.83 again
Probably you are safe if you actually installed Kenth by CDW or moto-fastboot (boot.img and system.img)
But if you actually run the update.zip or any update trought the normal android recovery screen and if you saw the following legend "updating AP20 bootloader" in that case you CAN NOT flash any SBF from Motorola
I hope it help

New Atrix, Need help to decide which Rom is the Best!

Hi, i just got my new AT&T Atrix 4G that i bought in amazon and i already unlocked it and rooted it using the method describe in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15930466
But now i cant decide which rom is the best. I'd like to try the official update from Motorola's site (cause i kind of like the motoblur thingy) which is a zip file and im use to update roms in other android phones from a zip file, but iv read some disturbing posts about ppl bricking their phones and id really don't want that happening to me
Questions:
1) Is it safe for me to download that update file from the Motorola site to use it and test it?
2) What is the best Stable and Fast rom ATM?
I really love cyanogen, my wife has a Motorola DEXT and i love how it looks and works, but iv also seen these other roms like the alien one and others in the forums, so far iv seen like 6 and i still dont know which one is the best.
Oh and i almost forgot, heres some relevant info about my phone:
System version: 4.1.83.MB860.ATT.en.US
Baseband version: N_01.77.15P
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9-00007-g527fe10
Build number: OLYFR_U4_1.8.3
Great post bro

Oh that is a pretty damn nice post, but still remains one question. The post describe how to switch between different roms and official roms, but it doesn't say anything about switching from the official froyo 2.2.2 to the official Gingerbread 2.3.4
1) Don't install any official Motorola updates I'm not sure if this is a problem anymore but once you install the official 4.5.9.1 (Gingerbread) update from Motorola you can't downgrade without risking bricking your phone. Just skip any updates and install the rom of your choice.
2) If you like Motorola based gingerbread check out Aura or The Dark Side (Based off Aura + themed with some improvements). Alien and Homebase aren't being updated anymore so I wouldn't suggest them. Ninja is being updated soon so you might want to try that once it's updated as it's pretty out of date right now. There's also a lot of other roms out there but they aren't very popular.
If you like CM7 on your wife's phone then defiantly get it. I run it and I love it, so far the stable build doesn't have fingerprint support but the nightlies and past 2 weeklies have, they'll probably release a new stable release soon. Very fast, good battery life, lots of features, stable.
And as far as Kernels use faux123's or Clemsyn's (Based off faux123's with some/improvements). Whether you want overclocked or not is up to you, I use faux123's CM7 Kernel 0.2.2 1.0 Ghz as I don't notice a real world performance difference between 1.0 Ghz, and 1.3/1.45 Ghz and the battery life is better but it's all preference.
Also make sure you have Romracer's latest recovery.
Thank you very much a question tho, why Romracer's? i currently have CWM that got installed once i rooted my phone, and btw where do i find those nightlies?
oh and one more thing, i dont know if you notice but my Build number is OLYFR_U4_1.8.3 and the one in faux123's says [<{ ATT CyanogenMod 7 (ATT, INTL Unified) }>] for cyanogen, should i use that one regardless of my build number?

You find a thread a couple of posts down (if that's too difficult I can paste the link for you, we do not condone people getting tired by looking themselves..) about those nightlies.
A little advice (if I may): if your post doesn't include a modification to the phone's operating system / a Rom / a significant fix to something that a lot of people can apply on their phones AND /OR your post includes one or more questions then it should be in the Questions & Answers section of this forum.
Also check the noob guide in General, right at the top. All the good information you need is there.

If you want to play it safe or if you don't know much about flashing and don't want to brick your phone then stay stock or close to stock. Also if you want webtop and fingerprint scanner stay close to stock.....for me motoblur is very nice but it slows down the device alot and so I try to do without it.
I would recommend Home base ROM or CM7 beta2 but these might make you lose some features but if you can live without them you're going to like how smooth they are.
CM7 is available with working FP scanner -- install the latest weekly build! I've been on CM since the first beta back in September and I haven't looked back!
XDA doesn't allow "which ROM is best?" threads.

[Q] does the x2 kernel support loop devices?

I am pretty much not enlightened in this matter, but I am wondering if we have a kernel that supports loop devices or not? More specifically I wanted to see if the ubuntu installer would work for the x2. I have tried and it, and its a no go, so this will have been a very short walk if our kernel doesn't support loop devices. (just as a note I am running eclipse 2.2 wit all mashed-up v2)

bro, I'm thinking until the we find that magic pudding for the Droid X2, the kernel won't support a lot since Motorola has given us a pretty standard kernel and no unlock key where we can unlock our phones on our own. So, right now, the droid x2 is stuck with what the wonderful devs are/have cooked/cooking up for the red headed bastard phone.

Not quite sure but it is part of running linux on Android.
@trafalger888 - I think your right linux will work. I believe the loop device thing is not a problem...I've gotten past the stage in getting ubuntu up where that would be an issue. Maybe ill try debian. So I believe the kernel for 2.3.5 supports these loop devices.

Introduction to xda

Hi, my name is Travis, I've been a verizon slave since 2009 with the bb storm. Moved to a droid then x and x2. I'm currently on an incredible 2 and I hate it. Through much push and pull, I got to keep my service on the incredible and also keep an x2 along with a free extended battery.
I rooted 2.3.5 on the x2 and now looking into roms. My software learning curve isn't steep so I thought I'd send a shout out to the devs and members here. Looking into finding a great rom for the x2 withing the next few day.
Oh yeah, I'm leaving in a month for basic in the AF, going into cyber surety(basically legal hacking) and looking forward to it.
Thanks for reading, I'll be around!
Welcome. Every one here is awesome and will help if you need it.
Most all x2 roms are built on 2.3.4
Eciplse is on 2.3.5 though, and is a very good, stable rom.
If you want more excitement than try some of the ics, cm9 based roms. Just know that they are buggy and being worked on. Aokp, paranoid android, and of course cm9.
Cm7 is much more stable then th ics builds and could easily work as a Daily driver.
Good Luck.

I was thinking about the eclipse rom, It looks really nice. It will take a bit. I'm still reading and this forum is huge. I haven't found the "how to" thread yet on roms. Sure I'll find it. Thanks for the warm welcome.
I would check out the Cm7 rom thread. It has some good links to the guides you want as far as sbf, root, nandroid backup and bsr(aka cwm recovery).
Eclipse won't let you down.
If there is anything I can help you with, then don't hesitate to pm me.

Welcome aboard sir, and as an AF vet good luck with your service and thank you for stepping up.
As for roms you will find much more action happening with the 2.3.4 build as others have already mentioned. CM7 & 9, PA, AOKP are all based on 2.3.4.
You will absolutely want to find the "How to SBF" thread and get setup for doing an SBF. To my knowledge no dx2 has ever been "hard bricked" but "soft bricking" can and does happen which means SBF is your salvation as of course is nandroid backup. And my last piece of advice would be to make a nandroid backup of 2.3.4 Stock/Rooted, particularity if you are a"flashaholic" as some of us are on here...lol
Anyway welcome to the friendliest forum on XDA.

+1 for eclipse since it is the most stable and sounds like you wont have much time for figuring out any bugs that may occur on the ICS based Roms since you will be serving our country lol. Good luck, and thanks.
Wow. Thanks for all the warm wishes and thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I'll be sure to post back about my Rom upgrade.
I like cm7 for the customizations, I have used eclipse for awhile and it's fantastic as well but i always find myself floating back to cm7. Just curious, there seems to be great roms for the dinc2, what about it did you not like?

First off...welcome! And now on to your question.
After rooting, protecting root with voodoo, and temp unrooting:
Just take the OTA update to 2.3.5 by going to System Updates in Settings-About Phone. Then restore root using voodoo and delete backup.

[Bounty]: Revert to Gingerbread via Kexec

This is a thread for USEFUL discussion about the logistics involved in reverting the Razr back to GB (please keep the discussion on topic). I know there are those out there that want it.
I am throwing 50 bucks into a pot to the Dev that first finds a way.
What I have gathered. With the release of kexec, we now have the ability to flash custom kernels to our Razrs. From what I understand, the thing preventing the reversion to GB is the change from the GB kernel to ICS kernel...
So in theory, we should be able to fllash the gingerbread kernel, then the stock GB rom and we should be good?
Thinkin out loud, is any of this sound feasible?
EDIT: Bounty withdrawn, seems impossible due to locked bootloader as well...

Hi!
This is a feature request. There's no development involved. You should post questions in QA section. Or make the same question in kexec thread.
Thank you!
sorry for the wrong spot.. i didnt want to hijack the kexec thread and move it off topic. I thought there would be development involved in getting a GB kernel ported to work with kexec.
maybe someone else with more knowledge can chime in. My bad if i am mistaken
Sorry, but for what i understand,
Kexec able us to load a custom kernel after boot and not flash a custom kernel.
so i think dev have to find an other way. But they have more stuff to do than finding a way to downgrad i guess

I agree. Many devs are focusing on stabilizing CM9 and working to bring us CM10, I dont think GB is on their agenda but maybe some dev is willing to do it.

Yes i realize most are, thats why i was putting my money where my mouth was. ICS has been a disaster for me on 3 razrs i am currently back on my bionic. I was hoping it would be a fairly simple project since all i was thinking needed to be done was to update the existing moto GB kernel for Kexec, and make a flashable zip of the stock moto GB rom
but i :dunno: im not a dev by any means

I was hoping it would be a fairly simple project since all i was thinking needed to be done was to update the existing moto GB kernel for Kexec, and make a flashable zip of the stock moto GB rom
but i :dunno: im not a dev by any means

Yes, it will verify the signature of your stock kernel then at just the right time hijak the boot process and load the custom kernel. I'm not a dev so i can't say if it can be done or not, but i would imagine not.
Edit: meant to add i think the biggest problem is that the bootloader changed between gb and ics. So without am unlocked bootloader don't think its happening.

So basically, without being able to also revert my bootloader version, i am up the creek as they say.
