[Q] Only getting Edge Network - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Everyone,
I just picked up an unlocked/unbranded GTI-9100 and am only picking up the Edge network for T-Mobile USA. Is there a certain Modem or Kernel I need? The 9100 is on 2.3.3, so I guess I should root it and flash upgraded ROM/Kernel package? I am fimilar with ODIN as I have a Vibrant and a T-Mobile GS2.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I think you should double check your network settings and APNs

With the GT-I9100, you'll ONLY ever get Edge on T-Mobile USA. Doesn't matter what you flash. The phone simply doesn't have the hardware to receive 1700mhz UMTS, which is one of two necessary bands (the other being 2100mhz UMTS) for 3g/4g on T-Mobile USA's network.
The GT-I9100 will only ever get HSPA/HSPA+ on AT&T's network in the US. I'm sure of this - I have an I9100, and am on AT&T.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Nope. Not short of getting an AT&T account just for that phone, anyway.
...
(sorry, here comes some snark)
Unless you're comfortable cracking open the phone, ripping out the antenna, replacing it with one that will receive 1700/2100 mhz UMTS, decompiling the OS, tweaking it to recognize the new frequencies, and recompiling.

You can either get a USB jig or flash a stock kernel back. Try a search. This has been asked a CRAPTON of times.

Just found this forum... have the exact same issue. I have the GT-I9100 Intl version from Australia and now in the USA for a couple of weeks using T Mobile.
The dude behind the counter asked if my phone was unlocked, which it is. I told him that it supports Quad Band UMTS 850, 900, 1800 and 2100mhz and he said I'd get full HSPA+ reception on the 2100mhz band...
Sure enough, it's only Edge. I THINK there might be a setting in the Device Config (on keypad * # * # 197328640 # * # *) and possibly change something to use the US 2100mhz or something like that...
I can live with using Edge, but just interesting whether it's just a config setting that needs to be changed in the handset itself to pickup a different connection type for US 2100mhz bands?

I9100 only gets Edge on T-mobile USA because it doesn't receive 1700 WCDMA. If you want 3g/"4g" you'll have to go to ATT or another carrier that uses the same frequencies...
T-mobile USA uses AWS for high speed mobile internet, which REQUIRES BOTH 1700 & 2100mhz WCDMA. One is used for uplink, the other for downlink. Only receiving one of them won't work, which is why you're only getting Edge.
Dude behind the counter is wrong and doesn't seem to know how AWS works.
EDIT: BTW, UMTS and WCDMA are somewhat interchangeable in this instance.

[Q] 3g/4g on t-mobile US

I recently purchased an unlock galaxy s2 i9100. It is supposed to be GSM unlock with HSPA+ 21Mbps/HSUPA 5.76Mbps, EDGE/GPRS Class 12, Quad band GSM 850/900/1800/1900, Quad band UMTS 850/900/1900/2100 hardware capabilities. since I have gotten the phone i have not been able to connect to anything but edge. Tmobile assured me i had the correct APN setting. I would like to know if anyone know what I could to to enable the HSPA+ T mobile US uses UMTS 2100 to connect. I rooted and flashed the lite'ning rom.

I am a bit of a newby and would appreciate any advice.
Nope you won't get hspa speeds on Tmobile with the current international version. You have to wait for the Tmobile variant. International version gets
3g speeds only on att.

This is correct. However, it's only used for one way traffic (either uploading or downloading, i'm not sure which). UMTS 1700 is used for the other direction of traffic on T-Mobile. This means no 3G/4G without both frequencies.
Your 2 options:
1. Get a T-Mobile phone.
2. Switch to AT&T.

thanks for the quick and concise responses. I have a clarification: does this mean that I when Tmobile comes out with the variant my phone will be able to upgrade to Hspa via a rom or radio update or that if i want to keep this model i will have to wait to swap it out for the tmobile version

The I9100 will NEVER work on T-Mobile. The SGS2 that they are releasing has different HARDWARE. There will never be a way to make the phone you have now work on T-Mobile 3G.
As others have said you'll need a different phone in order to get it to work on T-Mobile USA's 3G/4G frequencies.
You'd need a penta-band phone in order for it to work on all of them. I think Intel is curently working on that or already did but that's all there is. You'd need both 1700/2100mhz in order to use it with 3G.
I don't get how people don't research before they buy!!

[Q] Modem firmwares. Any that would work.

I am curious..
I bought a SGS2 i9100 (international)
the site i bought it from says
Wireless RadioGSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz
UMTS 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 MHz
Now.. i have a HTC panache (mt4g) that is on my carrier... and it says
AWS 1700, 2100 MHz (Bands I et IV)
IS THERE A MODEM I CAN FLASH FOR MY SGS2 that would work on my HTC panache carrier?
OK. Let's try this again...
Finding a modem that works well with your carrier & it's network with the SGS2 can be a bit of trial & error. Basically if the modem you're currently using is giving you lousy coverage/data speeds, start flashing/testing modems until you find one that works for you. Here's a link to a bunch of CWM flashable I9100 modems you can try to get you started. Do a Google search with XDA appended to your search terms & you should be able to dig up heaps of posts that link to others you can download/try.
Well it seems like i do have a australia modem (BUKI1)
When i put my SIM card from my HTC phone.. The SGS2 automaticly goes into roaming and doesn't detect the non roaming carrier..
By the way I'm in canada.
IT ALSO SEES THE APN for my HTC phone carrier when i put the sim card.. but goes straight to roaming

I think it's the modem that not doing it since it's a autralian Modem...

Is your network T-Mobile USA? (I'm guessing yes since you've also got a MyTouch4G?)
The phone does not have the necessary radio hardware to receive 1700 mhz. Which is one of the bands necessary for AWS. So nothing better than Edge on T-Mobile USA.
No amount of modem flash is ever going to fix a hardware limitation.
Edit: Oh, I see from one of your posts above you're in Canada, so you're NOT on T-Mobile USA. BUT everything I said is still valid. If you're trying to get the phone to receive 1700 mhz, you won't have a lot of luck without some major phone surgery involving a hardware antenna engineer, as stated in the link provided to you by oinkylicious.

Bell I9100M would it work with? and why

first off i know the seniors are going to start *****ing at me for starting a tread when there is like 6 already. But this is different for many reasons:
1. bell galaxy s II i9100M does indeed support 1700 / 2100 UMTS as stated both in the booklet, and also on their webside. I own one and was wondering which modem file would allow those frequencies and how would i get it working with Mobilicity & Wind.
thanks in advance

Wind & Mobilicity use AWS frequencies (1710–1755 up, 2110–2155 down) these are generally not supported by Bell Mobility branded handsets as Bell does not use these frequencies, the phone you linked is capable of the same frequencies as the GT-I9100M other than LTE and the GT-I9100M is not capable of H+ or 3G speeds on Wind or Mobilicity, in order to get 3g/H/H+ speeds on Wind or Mobilicity you would need an AWS capable phone (ie one from them or T-Mobile USA).

ATT Galaxy S II - i9100 T-Mobile 3G/4G Network???

Hey whats up erybody?
Im new to the forum as well as the android flashing/modding scene as i've always had an iPhone but recently gave in to this Galaxy sII as it looks and performs amazing. The only issue I have currently is I own an ATT Galaxy sII that is unlocked and I am using for T-Mobile but cannot get any 3G/4G network at all.
This phone is rooted and running cyanogen mod on ICS 4.0.4. I have read online about people flashing there ATT Note's radio to force your phone to accept 3G/4G for T-Mobile and I was just wondering if this is possible for the Galaxy SII? I tried using the same method but no luck, can anyone possibly point me to the right modem to install if one is available? This phone is great but I cant stand this slow ass EDGE signal.
Thanks :cyclops:

First off, you're in the wrong forum for your device.
This is the forum for the i9100, the international Galaxy S2.
You say you have the AT&T Galaxy S2... Which is the SGH-I777.
Second, since ATT and T-mobile use different frequencies for high speed mobile data, most devices for ATT will only get Edge on T-mobile. Vice versa, most devices for T-mobile, if unlocked for ATT, will only get Edge on ATT's network. SOME devices you can flash a different modem, because they have the requisite antenna hardware to get the necessary frequencies.
Unfortunately for you, the SGH-I777 isn't one of them.
Unless, you actually have the Skyrocket, which is the SGH-I727. (check the label under the battery to get the exact model number) That phone, you CAN flash a T-mobile modem to it and get high speed on T-mobile's network.
Ahhh I see. When I power on the phone it displays the international model however in the menu settings it does say SGH-I777 which is why I was a little confused since there are so many differen't models aparently.
Looks like im screwd until later this year when/if T-Mobile does go good on there word that they will be acquiring new towers to promote the other frequencies for ATT devices. Thanks for the reply.

The boot screen and indeed, the about phone screen can change depending on what is flashed to the phone. So if you flash an i9100 firmware to an i777, it will then display the wrong model when booting. Which is why I said to check the label under the battery to be sure.

Not as of now. T-Mobile in the US uses AWS currently for 3g and "4g". This band requires both 1700 & 2100 mhz for data to get these speeds. The phone doesn't get 1700, do it won't get higher than Edge.
There are rumors T-Mobile will be re-purposing 1900 mhz (which the phone DOES get) for data, so if and when that happens, the phone will probably get high speed mobile data. But until then, you're out of luck for T-Mobile with this phone, and will have to use ATT to get high speed data.
Ananda
Hi ctomgee and others, I'm using a Galaxy S2 GT-I9100 that was bought unlocked. I'm also getting only 2G speeds on T-mobile. Could you tell me what is flashing the T-mobile modem and how it is done? Can I try to do this so that I can get 3G speeds? If this is not possible, would I get 3G speeds if I buy a S2 from T-mobile?
On the sidelines: What do they do to the phone that the phones bought from T-mobile would work but the others won't? Is it something done to the hardware or the software? If the change is in the software, can't we try to do it ourselves - are there any online tutorials on this?

Flashing a modem is essentially changing the software drivers for your antenna. This does not, however, change what frequencies your phone is capable of receiving. This is a hardware limitation.
The T-mobile USA Galaxy S2 is model number SGH-T989 - a totally different model than the GT-I9100. The hardware is completely different. The size itself, the CPU/GPU/SoC, the antenna hardware - all different. This isn't something you can fix with flashing a modem.
If you are patient, as I stated above, T-mobile USA is in the process of re-purposing a frequency the I9100 DOES get so it will get 3/4g on T-mobile. When that happens in the market you are in is up to T-mobile.

I spent hours online chatting with support trying to get this information and they couldn't provide it. 10 minutes of internet searching and you said EXACTLY what I needed to know. Thank you sir!! Helped me a ton.
Also, just a heads up. At the end of this year (2012) T-Mobile is going to launch their 1900 mhz band towers (see: newsroom.t-mobile(d0t)com/articles/4GNetworkEvolutionVendorsSelected) so AT&T phones that use that 4G band will work with T-Mobile once unlocked and moved over.

You can set the network mode to WCDMA only... but I think there's a problem with that. If you wander into an area where T-mobile doesn't have "4G" coverage on 1900mhz, then I don't think you'll have any signal at all. When it is set to GSM/WCDMA (Auto mode), it switches automatically to Edge if you don't get the "4G" signal.

The OP is from July. The guy above me today was asking a general question, and ATT sells TWO variants of the GS2 - the SGH-I777, which is their branded regular Galaxy SII, and the SGH-I727, which is the "Skyrocket" - which is the variant that has LTE.

Guy posted in i9100 forums because he tripped the flash counter causing his phone to say i9100 so he was confused and posted there. Asked about TMO only getting 2g and was already answered,

Same problem , get mostly Edge and Very less 4G with my International 9100 in T Mobile. Was wondering if a modem change will fix the problem . I am currently on Slimbean Rom. Any suggestions guys ?

Agreed since we are missing 1700mhz here but I was wondering whether its possible to capitalize on the 1900 mhz freq.

Settings to use for ATT Lumia 920 on T-Mobile?

Hi everyone,
What settings can I use to configure my phone to T-mobile? I have an ATT unlocked 920 and I only get E signal. At times it switches to 4G and it drops. I read many posts about changing connection speed but I don't have the option. Is there a firmware that I should install in order to get the most use out of my phone?
Thanks to anyone that can help out.

I unlocked my Lumia 920 at&t version yesterday. But it didn't worked with mobilicity. I don't know what's the problem. Can any one help.
It seems that ATT version, unlike Rogers version, has AWS disabled. And apparently it is not controlled by the firmware image itself, because I flashed Rogers rom. We need to find a way to turn it back on...

I still don't get this part - are phones sold by ATT and Rogers different in hardware? Because people reported using Wind/Mobilicity on inlocked Rogers phones without any issues. I was under the impression that ATT phone should also work if flashed with Rogers firmware. Is it not the case?

AWS stands for Advanced Wireless Services (wikipedia). It uses 1700 MHz and 2100 MHz bands, and only a few phones support these bands.
So there no way to enable 4g on a AT&T Lumia. I love this phone but if there no way to fix this then what the point on having a slow connection
I have it enabled after they gave me the unlock code. I haven't done anything special to enable it apart from the regular phone updates. I'm not in the USA.

AT&T L920 has AWS 3G disabled by default. You must flash an alternate ROM to enable it.

They are wrong. They do not want people flashing ROMs on their phone so of course they'll say something like that.
Flash a different ROM to enable AWS band.

I looked through the thread and I assume this method is still possible? If I enable the AWS band will I be able to get 3g and 4g on my phone? (Currently, I have E and 4G, but my house is at the end of the 4g signal...lol.)

Yes, you will have 100% access to ALL of T-Mobile's network.
BUT the European ROM does not call HSPA+ "4G", it says H+ in the status bar. The European networks never followed T-Mobile's bull**** of calling HSPA+ a 4G network.
Look at the RM-821 column in this chart to see what each connection type will be labeled with a European ROM.

If you WANT I believe you can flash the Rogers ROM after flashing the Euro Dev ROM if you want the T-Mobile connection labels. Rogers and AT&T L920 ROMs also get updates before the European ROMs, so that is another thing to consider.

I'm currently on European DEV ROM. How exactly do you folks confirm that AWS is indeed working? Can anyone please confirm that you were able to get Wind Home on unlocked ATT Lumia 920 that has been flashed to Rogers, European and then back to Rogers ROM?

If you are able to connect to an AWS network. I personally use AT&T so I can't test it out, just repeating what others have said. What I know is that people with Rogers pentaband RM-820s flashed the AT&T ROM and that disabled AWS. Flashing Rogers back didn't re-enable it. So it seems that some ROMs like AT&T reprogram the bands and some like Rogers don't. I don't know any of this for sure, though.

The most important question now is - which ROMs can reprogam these bands back. With TMo its hard to confirm you are actually getting AWS and not the 1900 MHz 3G. I'm waiting for someone to confirm that with a true AWS carrier (Wind, Mobilicity).

Yeah if you're in an area with 1900MHz 3G then it is impossible to tell I think. I do not believe the 920 has any good diagnostics app.
Reading through the forums though multiple people have stated that AT&T ROM disables AWS and that euro dev ROM enables AWS. One person stated that the euro dev ROM did not enable AWS and instead he flashed through a ton of different ROMs including some latin america ROMs before finally getting AWS enabled. It's all in the thread I linked to earlier from January.
