Can't turn it on - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
three days ago I installed Darkyrom HD on my mates Galaxy S2, everything went smooth. But 10 minutes ago he called and said that the phone woudn't turn on!
He says he can't get response out of it. No recovery or hard reset with nor without battery in.
Don't hope it's perma bricked and it seems weird that it suddenly wont turn on.
Any ideas/help?
Thanks a lot.

At the same time press volume up + home button + power on to enter CWM.
Is his battery charged?

Does it get a response if holding down the power button for 8-10 sec? This will essentially reboot the phone regardless of what state it is in. If your buddy's been hit with the "sleep of death", this will boot the phone. Though I think this is a low probability if he tried pulling battery and putting it back.
Does it get a response if plugging it into the AC adapter? On the off chance the battery is completely dead. I'd like to think he tried this, though.
Has he tried another battery? Could be the battery lost the ability to hold a charge. Not common, but not unheard of either.

Doesn't seem to help. But I've told to let it charge the night and try again.
Any particular this happens? Seems random that it suddenly wont turn on.

Any particular reason? Sure. Most often, because the user installs something or flashes something they are not supposed to, to their phone. Or dropped it in water.

I wasn't trying to say YOU installed or flashed something. Maybe he did. Can I assume the phone was working when you gave it back to him? And that it was working fine for the three days after? Or was the phone in YOUR possession until he called you today?

I haven't had phone since i installed it. But I honestly don't think i he flashed anything.
He went out to jog - phone worked (listening to music)
He came home and placed the phone on the table - Phone worked
He did some exercises and when he came back - phone all black, can't get any response

You said he tried a battery pull? And no response after replacing battery?

Sure his battery is just not dead, bit odd if it had been working and suddenly this happens.
Most cases an app or something can cause the phone to restart, or freezes, usually a hard reset solves this by holding down the power button for about 10 seconds.
Or entering recovery mode, or download mode just to ensure they are working.
Make sure he can charge the battery.
If all fails you may need to try a jig.

If not you will need to reflash to stock rom as warranty void with root or custom rom ..
JTag may be your next step .

try to get into download mode (vol. down, home and standby button) then you can flash a firmware

It wasn't the battery. But we've found someone that can repair it for 25 pounds + shipping. So if the USB jig doesn't work, it's going to them!

SGS 2 suddenly won't boot up

Hi everyone
My SGS 2 won't start anymore
I charged my phone, then went somewhere, used the phone, put it back in my pocket and the next time i looked at it it was shut down and i couldn't turn it on anymore, nothing happens at all.
theres no problem with the battery (it works on another SGS 2)
I rooted my phone and put lightning rom 1.2 on it. i had no problem rooting the phone and its the first rom since stockrom.
What should I do?
So you mean your phone won't boot anymore? There is no Samsung logo or anything?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
no logo, no vibration, just black
tried normal startup as well as "vol down, home, power"
Recovery vol up + home + pwr release at splash screen .
You can either try the usb recovery jig though this poster says it does not work but in my view worth a try.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1206967
Or take your chance and return the phone under warranty .

Did you try removing battery, replacing and then turning on. I had the same issue yesterday and this worked for me.

Power the phone off completely. Pull the battery. Put the battery back in after about 30 seconds. Hold down both volume buttons while also plugging in the USB cable. Keep the vol buttons held down until you see the d/l screen come up. Let go of the buttons and then click vol up once to proceed to d/l mode.

What was the battery level like when the phone last turned on? If you can't get it to power up at all, there's only so much you can try. I'd try plugging it into a different outlet as well as maybe the computer and see if you can get any response from it.
When you have the battery in and press and hold power, do you see the softkeys briefly blink like they normally do when turning the phone on? It's possible that the battery is somehow the problem but I guess it could be the phone too. Would love some other input from other people cause I'm at a loss on what else to try.

It was at 30% I think the battery is discharged but I don´t know how to recharged.
When I press and hold power or vol up and down the softkeys don´t blink.
Yes I know I need more people to give solutions but thank you very much Kadin.
Well if you think it's fully discharged, leave it plugged into the wall for a while. It's possible that it dipped down below the point where it normally shuts off (around 5%) and may need a good long charge to get it back alive. I'd attempt that if you haven't already.

It might help too if you explain what it was you did to the phone to try to get back to att stock.

There is a very good chance that if you charge the phone with wall charger
to be sure the battery is not dead and then use a JIG which will get it into
download mode you will be able to reflash the stock rom.
You can buy a JIG for less than $2 bucks including shipping on eBay.
Be sure that when you do get it into download mode to re-download
the stock rom just to be sure that the rom file is not corrupted.
Good luck!

The way you phrased your description above make it sound like you flashed a .7z file in Odin3. If you tried to do that, it wouldn't work, or course. The file you named, I777UCKH7 OCD No BL.7z contains an executable file that is an Odin one-click downloader. You have to extract the file from the 7 zip archive first, then run the file in windows, then connect your phone to the pc. Maybe that's what you did but your description is confusing?

Phone malfunction

My phone suddenly started turning off by itself. Also, I noticed that the power button has no effect when the phone is on. I THINK it works to turn it on, but pressing it has no effect after (i.e. won't lock, etc). Then it shuts off again in less than 30 seconds. I tried wiping everything as quickly as possible, and that still didn't work. I can't even reset it back to stock because the phone won't stay on long enough. Is my phone a goner? (i.e. hardware malfunction)?
I'm on Jivy's ICScrewed 2.1. Haven't done any major changes asides from testing out the latest ICS and Jelly bean ROMS. (aokp and CM 9.1). I didn't like them so I wiped and restored. This was last night. My phone was fine until a couple minutes ago where I realized I wasn't getting texts and it was turned off. :/
Can you get into download mode/recovery?

you can still go into download mode by removing battery plug-in USB to ur phone and PC holding down vol up+vol dwn and insert battery.once u get into download mode install stock GB ROM 2.3.4(u can get it from creepycrawler posts).once ur stock check if the power button is working or not.if its not working yes your power button has hardware problem which can be fixed from your local samsung service center if you have warranty.if u dont have it will cost you 10$ to get it fixed.i had the same problem with my i777 with no warranty.

Turns off still. Whether I'm in recovery or download mode, the phone shuts off. Not sufficient time to revert.
Keep in mind if you send it in for warranty replacement because you can't get it working and they fix it or see you're on a custom ROM they're going to bill you. However, people tell me that's rare and that usually they wipe it anyway. Just a heads up.

The phone turns off even in Recovery or Download mode? Sounds like either a hardware problem, kernel problem, or maybe even a battery problem. Maybe you should try to flash a different kernel, that would only take a few seconds. But be careful, if the phone turns of during a kernel flash that might be dangerous.
Try to enter download mode with the battery out. Leave the battery out and hold vol down while plugging in the usb cable. See if it will go into download mode and not turn off. If so, it will be safer to flash from there.
It was a hardware issue. Got it back to stock and I got a new refurbished phone. I can finally love my phone again since this one doesn't have the horrid reminders of that one awful drop.

100% Bricked ?!

Here's how it happened :
Flashed latest Dorimanx kernel last night on the latest Disaster Rom and then began texting, watching some youtube, usual stuff and then went to sleep.
In the morning I couldn't turn it on.
Then I hold the power button but it went bootlooping and kept staying on that Dorimanx starting image.
I succesfully booted and it showed battery at 9% ( it was at 90% when I went to bed).
My first thought was to wipe cache so I did that. But here's the problem.
It got stuck at wiping cache and nothing happened so I removed the battery and then it was dead.No sign of life.
So my question is: It's completely bricked and I can get it returned whitout them knowing that I have been using custom ROM's ?
Cheers

Did you tried to charge it for at least 20 minutes?
If it won't charge, try to replace battery...
Bootloop is not a big deal (wipes will do the job) try replace/charge battery first, then if you still have problems just flash stock via odin and start over...
What I'm trying to say it's that it doesn't show any sign of life.No download mode,no recovery,no nothing.
I've left it with the charger plugged in for about 3 hours and nothing.

Yoh. It happened to me before. Some said charge your phone for a while. If it becomes warm near the battery, you can unbrick it a jig.
But my phone didn't get warm. So, I send it to the Samsung service center and yesterday I got it back.
Samsung messed with me for two times! I'm not going to buy another samsung.
That's nice. I've had my phone 15 months & had zero problems with it. Funny about that (there's a hint in there for people clever enough to figure it out).

Hey no worries bro I have bricked 2 sgs2's already and 1 sgs3. Yours is not bricked, happened to me as well. All you must do is connect usb to pc, while keeping the battery out. Then try turn it on normally. then, while it is on, insert your battery again and leave it to charge via usb for a while(tille batt is at least 85%, what I did). Then, before unplugging usb, turn phone off. Unplug usb and go into recovery and flash as per usual. You should be good now. Hope it helps.

[Q] Phone won't do ANYTHING - Full details and troubleshooting in post

Hi All,
I have a Samsung GT-I9100 phone which in it's current state, no matter what button is pushed or combination is pushed together will show nothing.
Situation of death:
6.30am - on charge, working fine - Take off charge put in pocket
6.50am - take out of pocket, phone sitting on the Galaxy loading screen. Attempt turning phone off then on and gets to same point and sits there.
7.30am - pull battery off, leave for an hour
8.30am - Put battery in, same result. Find post here which recommends clear data/factory reset. Put phone into Recovery, select Clear data, reboot phone, same situation. Put phone back into recovery, select factory reset. Starts clearing, sits on this screen for about 15 min before screen turns off. leave for 10 min, nothing happened so pushed power button and nothing happened, attempted recovery mode and download mode button combination - still nothing. Removed battery for 30 min, back in and same thing.
Now stuck with my phone which will do absolutely nothing. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. From what I read a USB Jig may be appropriate so will look into a bit of shopping soon.
What ROM were you on?
Don't say 4.0.4.

Ok, I won't say it....
Instead I will say 4.1.2 I believe. I was running the latest that had been provided to me via Kies (not been using a custom rom for a long time)
Jig more than likely won't work (0.0000000000001% chance of working), but try it any way. Service centre.

Took it to where I brought it, and they told me $100 min for repairs which isn't fun but I guess it's that point
Yep unfortunately that's how these things work. Look, if you can get a jig, try it. You may be one of those lucky people. But at least now you know what you're up for.
Well, thanks for the replies, sent it in and been told Mobo problems, and will cost more to replace than to buy a new phone... YAY....
