Best way to clean the backplate - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Okay, so, I have a Gray Prime that is decent enough (haptic feedback doesn't work, but the screen is excellent with little bleed, speakers are great, wifi/GPS/BT are typical), except that the backplate came from the factory with a number of pretty significant smudges. It almost looks stained, but I'm hopeful that with the right method I might be able to clean it up.
Any ideas? Just using a microfiber cloth didn't remove the marks, nor did using water by itself.

I noticed this also from oil from fingers n such on backplate. Maybe a non acidic solution of some sort. Don't want to use anything that will eat away St backplate over time. Cloth n water seemed to work initially. Only real solution tl this is tl clean backplate then out a case on it. LR you'll always be cleaning it. At least the included cloth works great on the screen. Wipes screen clean very easily.

Note that this isn't just fingerprints I'm talking about. Those have been pretty easy to wipe off on the other Primes I've had. These are what look like stains, but as I've scrubbed them SOME parts come off and others don't. It looks like someone at the factor was handling some kind of chemical and didn't wash his/her hands before handling the backplate.

I'll check it out, thanks!

I had some glue or something on the back of mine.

If you are one of the minority of non believers, be very, very careful that you do not remove the serial number sticker.

Probably wouldn't use hand sanitizer on a screen, as it contains alcohol. It can/will discolor your screen. However, hand sanitizer, or rubbing alcohol (in controlled amounts) would be just fine for the aluminum. I worked for a sign shop for 5 years and we used denatured alcohol on all metals. It can eat paint if used in large doses, but on a cotton swab, it should be just fine. Don't use it on the screen side though.. Just a bit of water and a micro fiber cloth..

I have kids, so I have used baby wipes on a couple occasions.. Great for if you're cleaning your tools of oil! However, they seem to leave a bit of a "slick" residue afterwards.. And I'm talking about using clean wipes, not used..

Um, wipe with baby wipe, then dry it off and no residue

Leather case left scuff marks all over my NT

I bought this case:
http://www.amazon.com/rooCASE-Leath...KP1G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1326056034&sr=8-1
I ended up returning it. It's a nice case, but it left scuff marks all over my NT. I haven't been able to remove the marks with Goo-Gone or isopropyl alcohol. Any ideas on how to clean the NT?
Same **** happened to mine not sure what to do about it tho.
OH wow, talk about timing - I was just asking this exact case in another thread on this very forum. Sorry to hear about that - hopefully you left a note in the reviews to warn others.

Good call. I'll go ahead and do that sometime.
thanks for the warning, was going to pick up one of these since there's a ton of positive reviews for the nook color
Ugh thanks for the heads up. I checked mine and found 2 tiny marks. It's such a secured case though so I just taped the sides.

Same here. Looks ugly when I take the device out of the case. But at the end of the day, I don't worry too much about it. I mean it is gonna always stay inside the case for me, ugly marks are all hidden.
I had this problem just leaving the nook in the box it came in. Where the microfiber was sitting on it, the edge turned black and scuffed. It's an unfortunate material choice. Probably better off to keep it in one in a case that covers the edges, so you won't ever see it.
Wow I bought the same case and got the same marks.
I also tried alcohol. Im at my wits end. Almost tempted to use some kind if abraisive, but dont want to hurt my nook's finish.

Seriously?
So, I bypassed this issue after hearing about the stain issue on the Roocase from this thread.
So, to get around the problem, I got an Otterbox Commuter, and put velcro on the back of it. It gives me Otterbox-level protection with the ability to have a stand that will hold it in portrait or landscape mode. Since the stand originally just uses velcro for this it functions exactly as it originally did.
I just got vecro adhesive tape from the local WalMart and put 2 strips on the middle part of the back of the Otterbox.
One thing I like about the case is that it has a little pocket that fits a microfiber screen cleaner cloth in a small plastic envelope.

Crapila glass

I don't think the prime has gorilla glass, got two rather nasty scratches on my screen, one in the middle, one near the edge, and because of the reboots i hardly use it. yet I've had my desire (which sits in my pocket when not in use) for 18 months and there isn't a mark on it.

seriously, there is no 100% scratch resistant glass. best i've seen is on the Galaxy Nexus. Just my opinion.

How thick the glass is has nothing to do with how easily it is scratched. Thickness helps with tensile strength, not hardness. You could have glass 2 inches thick, the surface would still scratch as easily as a glass pane .125 inches thick.
And the prime does have gorilla glass.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using Tapatalk
Gorilla, chimpanzee, whatever you call it, it does scratch and it doesn't take much. I am extremely careful with my stuff and I got the screen on my Prime chipped. Very small, can't see it when the screen is on, just with it turned off, reflecting light. Have no idea how it happened.
I don't buy devices without Gorilla glass, and can say, they don't scratch easily. They WILL scratch, but it takes significant abuse in my experience.
I've been using mine carefully for about 6 weeks and have no scratches. I'd chalk this up to user error. No offense.
Instead of saying what has already been said, I am going to provide hopefully a little possible ray of hope. A lot of times instead of it actually being a scratch it is something ON the glass, which can be buffed off with some elbow grease.
Also, if it is a scratch, try this fix. Get some furniture polish and a clean cotton rag. Spray the polish on the rag and work it into the scratch. Gently rub it in the scratch, and then wipe away any excess. You may need to do this several times but it SHOULD fix the scratch as long as it is not too wide.
Finally, there is always the option of jeweler's rouge, which can be gotten at a lot of hardware stores. Follow the directions and you should be able to buff out any scratches that you have. Keep in mind, this process will take several hours, and should also be your last resort.
Cheers
There may not be 100% scratch resistant glass, but there is a problem if a phone can live in my pocket for 18 months with zero scratches, compared with a tablet that has only been used for less than a week (and not for long each day, after the 2nd or 3rd crash I just get bored and put it away) that is sealed and protected with a dock when not in use.

The problem with that is I'm terrified of touching the thing now, I have only ever cleaned the screen with the cloth that came with a £1000 Samsung tv I have, cos the one that came with the prime was ****. but I will consider it.. I honestly can't understand what could have caused it, I treat this thing like a baby, its closed with the dock when I'm not using it, when I put it away at night it goes in a case and under a sofa out the way of children and cats. Like I say 18 months in my pocket with my desire, and not a mark on it, hell I've even dropped the thing 3 or 4 times and its still perfect. Dent on the corner from one of them drops, but not a mark on the screen.

Mine had problems with the glass too. My microfiber cloth would scratch the screen. I even took it to Best Buy and the guy carefully wiped my screen with their microfiber cloth and easily scratched the right and bottom of the screen. I took my pop bottle in my hand and wiped it with the cloth and it didn't scratch, then wiped my tfp screen with a microfiber cloth and it scratched. He even tried wiping other devices screen and couldn't manage to scratch them with the cloth. My tfp screen was a bad batch of gorilla glass or something. I rma it because it eventually had hundreds of scratches from wiping off fingerprints. The guy at Best Buy said that it definitely was not gorilla glass on my tfp.

Do you want a slow clap or something? It was tired before my post.
Obviously the glass didn't scratch itself. An object that is in your care has been damaged. The only person who could be responsible is you unless you've loaned it out to someone, who you should then hold responsible.
Buck up and take ownership rather than blaming the product. I use my TF201 for about 12 hours/day in various ways. It is mostly docked with the keyboard and gets opened/closed multiple times a day and docked/undocked at least a couple times per day. I have no screen damage, but I do have a scratch on the back of the tablet itself, for which I blame nobody but myself.
I didn't choose to go out and create a new thread on XDA *****ing about the materials in the product. You did, which is your choice, but in doing so, you accept the consequences of people posting things just as I did; just like I accept the fact that I'll probably get flamed for this post. Whatever. It's not that important in the grand scheme of life.
But I will say,...I feel better having responded. So yeah...or whatever...

Glass screen not level?

I'm a little anal retentive so I wanted to see if any of you have the same issue. I'll try my best to describe this.
Basically, it seems my glass screen is not level. When you feel around the edge, there is a bit of a "lip" where the glass meets the frame. If you are running your finger starting from the glass towards the edge, it kind of raises up before failing off the side of the phone. I've noticed on the left side towards the top of the phone, my glass is actually flush with the frame so there is no lip.
In addition, near the edge that is flush with the frame, if I push down on the glass, the screen will actually depress downwards and you can feel the edge now.
I don't know which is right or wrong (flush or lip), but I'm afraid the screen may not have been installed correctly. I'd expect uniformity around the entire perimeter.
Should I exchange it?
I have the same thing in the middle left side of mine... Not worried about it though everything still works great!

Don't worry! This is a very very common thing, but the good part is there is an easy fix!
1. Find clean sturdy safe work area. I recommend a freshly cleaned kitchen table or bar top. Wipe down with a mild all purpose cleaner and allow to air dry. Do not use a towel to dry it as you will leave lint behind, thus defeating the purpose of cleaning it in the first place.
2. Remove any grime/dust/oil from raised side carefully. I do this by using a good quality microfiber cloth to clean the entire phone.
3. With one good strike, use a hammer to reseat the raised portion back to where it goes while yelling "TAKE THAT!". It is important that you do this in one strike, so gather some friends with iPhones to practice on before risking your own handset.*
4. Check to make sure everything is nice and flat now.

Submerged my S-Pen in a sugary drink...

...it didn't fare so well.
I just thought some online documentation of S-Pen damage or malfunctions might be useful to some, so here goes:
My brother was fooling around with a ridiculously long straw in his drink and, well, let's just say that my S-Pen ended up submerged and had to be sucked out through the straw.
If you suck on the tip air comes through the button and vice versa. Once out, I sucked the fluid out through the tip and the button. It is completely dry as far as I can tell but it is still malfunctioning.
First thing I noticed was that there was no pointer when I hovered. Next I realized that this was because it thought I was touching the screen as soon as it was in range. Yes, I could scroll and interact as if I was tapping and swiping despite never touching the screen. The button activates and I can still hold it to circle things. It's often very hard to activate the capacitive buttons on the phone (menu/back), as if the hover function needs to be detected to activate them. It's like they often aren't receptive to input.
I have yet to see what soaking in distilled water or 100% isopropyl alcohol will do. I can also try replacing the tip. We shall see!
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk
OK, I soaked in distilled water for several minutes and dried it in the sunlight for four hours but it's not behaving any better. I decided to soak it longer before resorting to alcohol or changing the tip. I did make sure to get the air out as I submerged it (sucked on the tip as I lowered the button beneath the water). Yes, I've been doing a lot of "sucking" today.
The back of the pen floats so I had to hold it down with a spoon.
If anyone cares, it was Vault soda, which is Coca-Cola's "energy" soda.
Just to make sure it's the S-Pen at fault, I have an S-Pen with eraser that works fine (doesn't fit my phone, of course).

I got a new spen for a friend on amazon for like 10 bucks. Looked like OEM to me and no problems so far. I'm no expert but I would have tried the alcohol before water imo.
I would definitely try some rubbing alcohol, and then if you have an air compressor use that as well. Just keep laying on some rubbing alcohol and then blow the crap out of it with the air compressor, potentially it could break up any sugary gunk. If that doesn't work then it is likely screwed. Sugar+electronics is very bad.

Yeah. I've seen some for even less that looked identical except they lacked the Samsung logo. I'm probably going to stick with OEM Samsung though.
The point of trying distilled water first was to see if it can be done without alcohol. Alcohol can dissolve adhesives and has more potential for damage than inert distilled water. Because I am more lilely to have both options when I try water first, I'm trying water first. One reason it's worth knowing if water alone can fix it is that it is very hard to find 100% pure alcohol. If I have success with that then it may or may not be easily duplicated with common 70% or 91% isopropyl "rubbing" alcohol (there are more additives than just water), but at least we'll know enough to try.
Let's not forget: sodas are water-based and, thus, dried soda is typically water-soluable.

"Rubbing alcohol?" I have much better: 100% pure electronics cleaning grade isopropyl alcohol. I'm simply being systematic here for the sake of others (so we can see if such measures are required). I do have a tiny air compressor but I'm not going to try that until after I try changing the tip. It'll be a lot easier to blow inside with the tip removed. Heck, I might even break out the Water Pik when we get to that point. I wonder how the WaterPik handles alcohol?

I would try submerging it in hot distilled water. That will break loose any dried up sugar left in it. Make sure to remove the tip first.
After that, throw it in a jar half full of no less that 97% isopropyl alcohol and shake that sucker.
Pull it out and place it on a paper towel for a few hours.
Then blow it out with canned air or something similar.
Reinsert the tip and test it out.
