I bought some USB cables off monoprice because I figured I could transfer files through it when the tablet is docked. Nothing is showing up on my computer when plugged in...
Kinda ****ty if I have to buy proprietary cables just so I can dock at home/work and charge in my room without moving cables.....
Any ideas?
Did you install the special ASUS Transformer driver? ASUS made what I consider a poor choice and requires that you install a special driver instead of doing what they should have and have the Prime (or its siblings) look like USB attached storage.
Bye.

Had to install them to root the TFP, nothing seems to show up.
bump......
Same problem here. I installed the Suite and restarted - PC (XP) still not seeing the TF-201.
I also downloaded and unzipped the drivers alone from the ASUS website. Now that they are unzipped, what do I do with them??? Of all the crap in the ZIP, I'm not really sure which files go where. Help would certainly be appreciated!
I assume you're trying to use the full-sized USB port on the dock to connect to your computer? I'm pretty sure that won't work. That port is designated as a host port and not as a client port. You won't be able to use it to connect your TFP to your PC.
It would be kind of like connecting your laptop to your desktop and expecting the laptop to show up as a drive on your desktop.

Wow, thanks Aragorn! that explains it. I'm following ASUS's instructions to update to ICS and hopefully put an end to my "serial number unknown" fiasco, and totally overlooked that their reference to a USB meant the 40-pin one used for the AC adapter! I am finally connected to PC and transferring the updates. Thanks!

I was guessing this was the answer, but that's very unfortunate. Instead of $.99 USB cables I'm now going to have to buy a handful of proprietary cables.. bummer.

Yeah, I'm currently evaluating what the other options are before I buy a bunch of the Asus proprietary cables.

Hi all, is anyone else interested in using the dock as a usb input (HID compliant) device? I'd love to use it as a usb keyboard / mouse w/ other computers without the tab attached. I (for the sake of morbid curiosity) grabbed a Male/Male usb cable and plugged it in and got no debugging info from the host (mac) when i connected it. Is this possible and what would likely be involved? thanks!
It would be *almost* impossible to do that over the two standard USB ports on the dock without messing around with the hardware inside. Instead, I think you'll have better luck using the 30pin dock connector if you can find out the pin outs and make a cable yourself.

Can't really see that working.
It would be cool if you could do the kind of thing possible with the Always Innovating tablet. I nearly bought one of these instead of the TF.

So for those of us who can't get our hands on the USB connector kit, I was thinking of a possible workaround.
Using the stock USB cable, would it be possible to use a USB female to female connector? Or for controllers like the PS3, a USB to mini USB adapter?
No. It was tested and it doesn't work. I tested it myself on my original transformer.
What do you need a USB connection for?
I am not trying to start an argument but if you are straight up looking to transfer files to a PC, Dropbox on WiFi is nearly as fast as a USB connection for most average-sized files and is far more convenient to use.
You could also make use of the 8GB Asus gives you in the "My Cloud" app which also works pretty well.

He might need it for peripherals -- like connecting a gamepad or mouse to the TF Prime.
That said, yes, there is circuitry required for the USB connector/host feature, so you can't just use a "dumb" cable to get support.
Good Morning
When I want to connect my droid X phone to my laptop, the cable is usb on one end and micro usb on the other end. So can I use that on my Sony S also to connect to the laptop? or are there different wires inside the cable or something so that I cannot use it, different wattage or amperage or whatever??
As always I am technically challenged LOL
Sandy
The Sony Tablet S uses the standard Micro-USB cable so you'll be able to connect to your laptop with no problems.
It will work for both, given the chip( Mini USB) is the same for both. The cable just carries the current. It is the charger portion that puts out the specific voltages. You are good to go as long as the mini USB fits

Really? This works?
Uh oh. I've tried hooking up my tablet to the PC with a standard micro usb cable. And also with the sony converter that makes it a normal sized USB port and a double ended USB cable. Both of these didn't do anything for me. I've just been transferring files to/from it with the sony converter and a jump drive.
Anyways, let me know if everyone else is normally hooking the tablet to a PC or if you guys are just assuming. Thanks

You should only need the one cable.. The cable I use for my HTC Desire HD works on the tablet and the same with the cable for the Galaxy S II as they are the same kind of cable.
Just connect micro USB, from tablet to PC and it works

Same here. I plug it in with a cheap USB <-> Micro-USB cable and it recognises it instantly and I can copy stuff to and from without even having to mount the storage manually.
Weird!! I tried plugging it in with my normal phone's micro usb cable when I first bought it and nothing happened. I tried again last night and nothing happened.
I just read all your posts about how it will work and I tried again, and my computer recognized it this time.

Today, a friend asked if I had an extra laptop. He needed one for his 10 year old son.
While rummaging through my closet (you know, the one with all the old computers, shotguns, and half empty Jack Daniels bottles) when I found one of these.
Two Pics … http://db.tt/GY4wfof6 and http://db.tt/rzkodoMi
Now, I have no idea as to how, where or when I got this. I had to search the net to even know what it was.
Ebay link … http://www.ebay.com/itm/230328510631?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2648
Continuing my search of the closet I also found a 2.5 inch 160 gig IDE hard drive. Assembled the two and I now have a portable battery powered drive that works great with my Flyer.
That looks kinda old school. =)
So you connect to the flyer via bluetooth or microUSB?
It connects with microUSB.
Now that I’ve had a chance to use it a while I’ve found I can set its switch to PC or DC.
When set to PC I just plug it in to my Flyer and can copy files both ways.
When set to DC it will function as a standalone unit (because it has its own battery power). I can plug thumb drives and USB sdcard adaptors into it to move files both ways.
It will even plug into my camera and copy the pictures.
Kind of handy as the Flyer doesn’t supply power at its microUSB port to spin a hard drive.
It’s not what I call well built but seems to work.
At least it does the job! I didn't know we could use OTG harddrive for the flyer...
That's very cool. Vastly increases the number of movies I could take with me on a long trip!
ARRR
Ok so spent about £40 on one of these and it doesn't work with my Flyer(32GB WiFi 3G). Flyer is not rooted and running the latest official version of HC. I have tried both DC and PC but device still does not detect the OTG drive. My samsung mobile finds the device fine.
Are you using a standard micro usb cable ??

Yes using a standard micro usb cable
Try this ... Shut down your Flyer (make sure Fast Boot is unchecked in settings) then turn on your drive in DC mode and restart your Flyer.
Your Flyer should find it then and will work from then on.
Using your file explorer of choice you should see a new folder called USB
Hi, tried this but still no go. Ran a USB host and USB OGB diganostics app which still fail to detect the device. The drive works with my camera/Samsung phone and brothers PSP. May have to fork out for WIFI drive.
Still no go with the OTG device. Tried with a friends Flyer and same results. I am going to try this device, is fairly cheap.

I have an OTG cable from my samsung but this did not work. what OTG cable are you using? I gather you are connecting the USB device into the OTG cable via a powered hub?
Got it working but it's a hackjob, was going to root but having to downgrade then upgrade again was a pain and was not guaranteed to work. Tried running the OTG cable into a powered hub but for what ever reason would always come up USB device not recognised when plugging in any memory device. Tried 3 USB hubs with the same result. Ended up cutting up an OTG cable and a few other USB cables so I could provide power to the device and then power to the tablet as well. For whatever reason i need to provide power to he memory stick before plugging into tablet. I have tested 4 different memory pens and 1 external harddrive and they all work.
I just bought a generic OTG cable, its about 6 inches long. I think it may have come from HP. I have used both a powered hub and a y-usb hard drive cable and both worked for me.
You have to have power on the device before you plug it onto the FLyer so that on connect the Flyer software knows what type of device it is and can load the driver. Otherwise the Flyer will label it unknown and disable the device.
Managed to get USB on the go to work on my Jetstream. See the following post. as the flyer very similar, should work for flyer too.

Is there anything I am missing here? I cannot for the life of me get my Prime to show up as an external storage device. Also it will not charge when connected to my PC. Charges just fine with the regular charger.
should show up as a MTP device. I wish i could have it as an external storage device, im interested in this as well. Anyone know how to do it?

Incorrect, the prime charges fine over USB, as long as it is USB 3, my laptop charges the prime just fine.
USB 2 and previous do not output the power needed to charge the prime, the prime needs at least 11.1 volts to charge, the adapter puts out 15 when connected to a USB 3 cord, but a perfect 5 volts when connected to a USB 2 cord, so your phone is fine to charge on that charger as well.
As for connecting to the computer, check out Samba network fileshare.
It works perfectly for browsing, there is even a hack to allow you to browse your root directory as well if you have root.
However natively it only connects as a media device.
Thanks for the replies!
Well that sucks big time.. transferring movies over WiFi takes for eeeeeeeeeeever. Can't believe it's not supported as external file storage. Oh well.. get my dock tomorrow. Should simplify things I hope.
I guess you can't connect the dock to a PC to transfer either?
That is correct, the dock adds no special abilities.
Use an SD card adapter, put the car in your computer and transfer that way, as fast as it can possibly get.
Does any of the custom ROM's allow the device to be recognized as a storage device? This would actually be worth it for me to unlock my boot loader.

My TF201 is recognized as media device named Transformer Prime TF201 in Windows Explorer and I can manage the memory storage without problem.
Is the right driver installed on your pc?
You can also use AirDroid (free on Play Store) to manage your files. But it's through Wi-fi.
Btw: my TF201 is rooted. I don't know if it make a difference.
I second the advice about charging. No charge when i plug to my pc (USB2), charging when plugged to my notebook (USB3)
Usb3? Sure, if you got it.

That's not true. Like pnoire stated, you can get your TF201 to be recognized as a media storage device. And also like you, when I first tried to connect my new TF201 to my pc, it wasn't even detected as plugged in. After a few tries, I figured maybe that USB port was bad as I've known it be kind of bad from time to time. So I tried a different port. This time my pc detected it as being connected but then it was listed as "Unknown device" under Device Manager. After some Googling and searching the forums, I ran across the thread about the Universal Naked Driver Beta in the development forum and it mentioning that some USB drivers for some Android devices conflicting with others. Since I had installed the Samsung USB drivers for my Samsung phone, I thought maybe that's what was causing the problem. I proceeded to uninstall the Samsung USB drivers and then retried connecting my TF201. Sure enough, my PC detected it again and proceeded automatically install the drivers it found from searching the internet and VOILA! My TF201 is now a working media storage device displaying both the internal sdcard and my microSD card I put in it.
Long story short, try uninstalling any other Android USB drivers for any other Android devices you might've installed earlier. Sometimes the only way of uninstalling the drivers is to first connect that device to your PC and uninstalling the drivers while viewing the device in Device Manager.
I'm not entirely sure how much help this will be but I had the exact same problem as the OP when I got my prime 2 months ago. I looked everywhere and found a solution although unfortunately I couldn't find the solution again after just trying to link you to it. Go to the device manager and find your prime listed as an MTP device. right click and go to properties. I'm pretty fuzzy on this so bear with me. You should have an option to select driver from a list. click that option and you'll have a ton a driver options to select. Look for the driver called something like "Universal MTP..." and install that. I was able to browse all internal storage on my prime after I did that and it would auto-connect like any other USB device once I plugged in the prime there after. Good luck!
I don't know if this will help or not, but when I tried with mine it wasn't recognized either. So after trying a couple of times I tried wiggling the usb end of the cable going into the PC and bingo it shows up as "Transformer Prime TF201" and I can transfer files no problem.
Hope this helps.
Mark
I am confused. My normal state. Do you use the cable that is the charger cable or do you need a micro USB cable.
Thanks.

The charger cable that came with the Prime.
I had this problem with MTP drivers being screwed up on my computer and several devices wouldn't work correctly.
I Google the MTP driver error I was getting on connection and in device manager and found it was due to a registry problem. If you're having that problem I can find the guide again and send it to you.
