[Q] Tethering TP with ICS to any Android phone - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hi,
I have read all the posts regarding the inability of ICS on the prime to access ad-hoc networks. I have tried all those 3rd party software (Barnacle, Wifi Tether beta 3.11 - tried to select different phones, pdanet on my Moto Atrix and mywi on a jailbroken Iphone 3GS) and my TP just does not see the ad-hoc network. There is a work around to modify wpa_supplicant (in one of the posts), but don't want my TP to be rooted. I think all these is happening due to ICS since on Honeycomb there was no problem. One of the posts indicated that ICS disables ad-hoc network since they are using WIFI Direct and don't know how that is implemented or used with the TP and able to connect to wifi devices (maybe like phone running a wifi tethering software, don't know)
Other people got it to work and for me, for whatever reason just does not connect my TP.
Another problem I have, is when I use bluetooth with my Atrix, it is indicated paired but not connected and whatever I do, when I click on the phone, the only option I have is rename or unpair, and my suspicion is, my bluetooth never connects to my phone. I tried my bluetooth headset and is connected properly (indicates media and phone connected) and I can hear my music play on my TP. Never works between my phone and TP.
If anybody is kind enough to share their thoughts or even a fix for this, would gladly appreciate it.
Thank you.

I fixed mine by using a custom ROM for my phone with a baked in Wi-Fi tether ie Sprint hotspot or Verizon's hotspots as these work just fine with tether.

I had success with the Open Garden Wifi Tethering app (available on the Android Market).
I have a Thunderbolt and have used Barnacle and Wifi Tether in the past for tethering to my laptop, but neither of these Apps worked with the Prime.

Tether
I also have the TP and a Samsung Intercept vm rooted, wifi tether and Barnacle both don't show up.
Why is this so difficult?
Just installed Open Garden, willsee when my TP gets back from repair (waiting on part! Hope itz a new radio!) Sent it in for weak wifi

theres already been a 20some page thread about this. ICS doesnt have a method to see ad hoc networks. some phones can broadcast in infrastructure, some cannot. Me personally, upgrading to ICS on my Verizon Rezound seems to have fixed its ability to broadcast in infrastructure, and where i was screwed before I am no longer.

I haven't tried adhoc, but it works fine if I turn the wifi hotspot on.
I'm using a custom ICS rom on a T mobile HTC Sensation.

If you have read all those threads - then there is no need to start another one.

[Q] how to tether G-tablet?

Before I buy a G-tablet, one of my major requirement is to be able to tether via my WM6.1 phones (htc mogul and htc 8525).
The 3 options from the WM phones are 1) built-in DUN USB 2) built-in DUN BT 3) WMwifirouter.
I've been digging through the xda forums and it seems like there are no standard ways to use any of these 3 options.
Specifically:
For USB method, android does not have the required drivers.
For BT method, android does not have a built-in BT tether profile.
For wifirouter, android does not allow ad-hoc wifi connections.
There are some work around threads, like for ad-hoc wifi tether the kyros tablet is doing this with limited success:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=860489
for BT tether, seems like the archos tablets has a BT profile built-in:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=893589
Do anyone have a work-around or solution for the G-tablet?
Sorry if this thread is a repeat.
btw, its a bit difficult searching for this because most threads are about tether FROM an android device. In this case, we need to tether TO an android device.
I tether with wmwifirouter without problems using a touch pro 2 on sprint.
The G tablet will connect via ad-hoc with an easy fix, if you do a search on the forums there's an update zip you can apply to stock to enable it, or all the custom ROM's have the ability built in. I use mine daily running on my Droid 1 using wireless tether.
I am running stock 3389 with the gapps enhancement, and once I rooted my work droid x and installed wifi tether, my gtab found it with no issues and connected to it once i set up the wep key. Now I have to see what Verizon is going to do if my account on our corporate account exceeds some sort of data limit since we are not paying them for the wifi tethering/high data rate for my one account. Others have been upgraded accordingly as need arises, so I guess I will see what happens.

PdaNet tethering on my jailbroken iPhone 3g works after I flashed VEGAn-TAB GINGEREDITION on my G tab. My G tab had no problem recognizing PdaNet on my iPhone. Woohoo!
I am also looking for a solution tethering my blackberry bold to gtab. I had tried several methods but no luck so far. We probably need BT tether profile for Gtab. Not sure if someone can porting Archos' BT profile to gtab.
Seems I need to set up the android phone to act as a wifi hotspot. I am using a Viewpoint gtab with Vegan 5.1. I am guessing the the gtab is ready to receive/interact, but the phone needs something.
I have DL easy-tether for the phone and it asks me to DL for the "computer" offering Windows, Mac, Unbuntu and Fedora.
If I have easy-tether on my andriod phone (Motorolo Atrexx), is that enough to establish a connection with the gtab? If so, how? If not, what do I need to do?
The phone has not been flashed with a new rom.

Application similar to Verizon Hot Spot

Is it possible to create an application similar to Verizon Hot Spot, then Archos can connected and work fine?
Its not an app issue that you can solve on your phone, its a hardware issue. Verizon hotspot app works in "Infrastructure mode" (ie Routers, real accesspoints) because the phone wifi hardware allows it. Most phones and laptops with wifi don't have that, and will only work in Peer to peer mode known as Ad-Hoc mode. Unfortunately the wifi scanner on Android was coded to ignore Ad-Hoc signals.
If you can't use Wireless Tether for Root Users, try tethering over Bluetooth by changing its options.
I have tried Barnacle and Rooter for LG Ally(SUperOneClick) from this forum. But as I uderstood right Adroid Archos 70 would not see it becuase didn't have capability to see Ad-hoc.
So I was thinking here a lot a very talant programmers, so if Verizon creat Hot Spot, that works as wifi rooter, so someone be able create similar to it for rooted users.
Thanks
Not true. If you have the hotspot app it will work. Depending on the phone you have you can download ROMs that have this app built in/hacked in that will work to tether.

Wireless Tether has been updated to work in infrastructure mode. I tether my Archos with my Droid X. Made this thing so much better for me.

Wireless Tether for root doesn't provide "infrastructure mode" on the Fascinate. Also, Bluetooth tether does not work on the Fascinate. (keep getting "unknown state")...
Obviously the phone is capable of infrastructure, because of the "hot spot" app, which does work with the Archos....
Gotta get the Wireless Tether for Root guys to fix it for the Fascinate.....

[Q] Any way to connect to ad-hoc network?

My new Touchpad don't seem to support ad-hoc wireless networks. It don't see them or let me join them by entering the SSID (network name) and password. Is there any software I can add or configuration change I can make to change this? I have a Windows Mobile cell phone that can share its connection over wifi, but its ad-hoc only and I use WEP.
Any ideas on what to do about adhoc networks? Any hacks or sideloaded software, if no official apps?
This KILLED me. I bought mine over the weekend while I was on vacation and the hotel had a catch-all page so I couldn't get through registration from that network. I figured no big deal and turned on my hotspot (Moto Photon) and it wasn't showing up. I configured a wifi shared connection on my laptop and it didn't show up. I thought I was insane! Ended up getting annoyed and driving up the road until I found an open network without a catch-all... My wife drove while I scanned for a connection. I know for a fact that they work with the Palm Pre's shared connection. What's up with the haterade HP?
I have an original droid and have this same issue as I understand cyanagen mod allows you to create a non ad hoc WiFi but I can't get a clear answer on this
So far I could not find an app or hack to allow the Touchpad to connect to an adhoc wifi either. I too have a WM phone (HD2). Unfortunately there is also no app for the WM phone that would allow it to broadcast infracstructure (non-adhoc) wifi.

I had this problem also, but you can still make it work. Goto your networks wifi setting and flip the auto switch and wait. It takes some time (almost 5min for me) but it'll pickup the ip address and finish loading the setup pages.
I am trying to use my TP with the wifi from my Touch Pro 2. Any help would be appreciated.
This is a real let down, no ad-hoc support. And our WinMo phone and Motorola Triumph do not support Infrastructure mode.
SoftAP appears to be a requirement to tether with android phones.
Unfortunately my Galaxy Spica does not have this so until some wonderful magical person creates an app/patch which allows the Touchpad to Bluetooth tether or utilise ad hoc wifi networks my tablet will be housebound
also need help with HTC HD2 on winmo 6.5 tethering adhoc with touchpad.
i guess the more realistic solution will be HD2 running android?
For you rooted android phone users http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238382
I'm really annoyed about this. One of the main things I thought of when buying the touchpad was to tether it to my winmo phone and browse the internet on the move. I hope someone creates a patch soon to enable adhoc wifi.
Really disapointed that I can't tether my iphone 4 to my touchpad.
For the price I can live without gps, sd/micro sd card slot, usb but the not being able to tether this thing is a deal breaker for me.
All I wanted to be able to do with my touchpad is tether for mail, browse the web, music, and be able to watch movies and it seems this thing falls short on everyone of the fronts.
I wonder if its likely anyone will release a patch for WebOS to allow it to recognise and use AdHoc networks?!
Just upgraded my Samsung Galaxy Spica to 2.2 Froyo using kitchen - Enabled portable Wi-Fi Hotspot from the settings menu and now it works perfectly (open or with WPA2 PSK encryption)
Appears this was the only way to get it to work for me as the touchpad was not detecting the adhoc connection on 2.1.
for those with the HD2, try using MCCM HD v6 DESIRE ROM. I can tether to my touchpad with no problems.... first try, no setting tweaks or anything...
Through my searching it was my understanding that Ad-Hoc support could be injected to the touchpad, is there any progress on this front to make it more user friendly? It was pretty heavy linux speak.
Most of the threads I've seen are focusing on Android development for support. What about the webOS side of things?
This is what I'm referencing:
webos-internals
.org/wiki/Ad-Hoc_Networking*
Is there some reason this isn't a viable option? the signal issues? Seems if the method is there than all that it needs is to be more user friendly...

I tried what was described in the thread a few days ago. Ran into issue when trying to execute
/usr/sbin/wifidriver -i
no such file exised....
I have a Samsung Charge with Gummybear. I could not tether at first. I went to the tethering settings and changed the profile to a Samsung Fascinate. Then changed the Setup-Method to softap for Samsung (master). This did not work at first then I shutdown (using the task manager) the tethering app and restarted. Turned my wi-fi on the touchpad off, then on, and my SSID came up. Clicked connect and went to access control and approved my touchpad connection. Now it works.
Hope this helps someone.
Just a heads up for anyone using an iphone 4 with their touchpad.
If you upgrade to ios 4.3.3 or later you can enable wifi hotspot and this hotspot will thether with the touchpad without issue.
I was running ios 4.1 trying to use mywi without success and then decided to try this method and works like a charm.

[FIXED+SOLVED] No more tether under ICS - limits ad hoc network connections

After ICS, the Prime cannot see wireless tether options. I have tried both wireless tether and barnacle on my phone and now the Prime will not see them and allow a connection to my phone.
UPDATE: so here is the basic situation for new readers - in Honeycomb on the Prime, using tether apps worked perfect and the Prime accepted ad hoc network connections so you could tether your Prime to your phone easy. Under ICS on the Prime, the ability has been removed and now the Prime will not seem to allow you to connect to ad hoc networks - those typically made via tether apps with your phone.
HEY before you post up "it works fine for me" do your research & you will see 2 key reasons why some can report it works...
1) they have "native" tether built into their phones - which means it is part of the native built in phones ability
Or
2) they are rooted & have a ROM that has tether cooked into it essentially making it "native"
If your one of these people there is no reason or need to chime in that "it works fine for me". We know & your not part of the issue here but you chiming in confuses the issue if you have 1 or 2.

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
IT HAS BEEN SOLVED - 2.3.12
Based on a post I read the other day, and that I was asked to test today, I decided to try 1 more time and it worked!! But not how I expected. I tried 3 tests... the final one worked!!
So, here is the process:
1. root is required AND make sure you have your file system app (like Root Explorer) set to make files R/W so you can edit/rename/set permissions
2. turn off wifi
3. go into system/bin and rename wpa_supplicant2 to wpa_supplicant2.bak - that's right folks.. it is NOT wpa_supplicant but wpa_supplicant2 that is running the show
3. download the wpa_supplicant file found here post #24 in my other thread
4. unzip it
5. rename it wpa_supplicant2 NOT wpa_supplicant
6. move it to system/bin and paste it
7. set permissions to xxx, x, xxx (columns) - see more details below if confused
8. go back and start up wifi
9. turn on wifi analyzer and you will see (*)AndroidTether with no red Ad Hoc notation!!
10. click to connect
11. ****ing surf and tether away!!
No rebooting needed, it is instant
I am using the good old original Wireless tether 2.0.7 app I always used! None of those beta releases and picking settings and blah blah
Yes, I was able to connect right back to my local wifi with no issues as well!
PLEASE hit the thanks button, I worked long and hard on trying to get this to work
#7 details if you don't understand permissions settings
When you set permissions (long press the file) a pop-up opens and it shows 3 columns with 3 checkboxes in each. Each "x" is to be checked
Read...Write...Execute
x..........x..........x
x......................x
x......................x
ditto. FML
Seriously people, you have to send this POS back.
By keeping it all you are doing is sending them a message saying it's ok to palm their customers off with third rate shoddy products.
There's no way ANYONE should be 'happy' with paying for functionality they're not getting.
wifi tether 3.1-beta6 on htc tb still works
anyone else seeing this? lack of tether is a major PIA if that isn't a selectable option?
Tethering works with my LG Revolution. Running Wifi Tether 3.1-beta6.
Have it set to display in infrastructure not ad-hoc. Ad-hoc may be the issue here
Have you tried setting it up using the wireless tether app but not in adhoc mode....using softAP mode or something like that.

Where you finding this beta of wifi tether? here it is
I use version 2.0.7 of Wireless Tether on my OG Droid and never had an issue, now it is dead and no tether. Latest version of Barnacle did not work either.
My laptop sees the tether 100% perfect... my tablet will not - just shows "AndroidThether not in range"
Im on 3.1-beta2 from the market and not connecting.

I have a T-mobile hotspot. I left it at home, this morning I thought maybe I would try my sprint NS4G to see. My Prime found it just fine, but it wouldn't give me data cause I dont have a tethering plan. Just sayin, its working for me.
Are you trying to tether to or from prime? If you are trying "from" prime (aren't you getting internet from wifi at the first place?) you can click more -> Tethering & portable hotspot
If you are tethering to prime, then all you need is to enable wifi?
I used Bluetooth tether just a little bit ago and it worked great
Tethering works fine for me. Open Garden with the Droid X.
My tethering is working 100% perfectly using a Galaxy Nexus on T-Mobile. No problems whatsoever on ICS.

No no.. I would never tether TO the Prime, no value in that.. I tether my Prime TO my phone. Worked perfect before ICS.
And no, it is not just as simple as "then all you need is to enable wifi?" that fact is exactly why they make tether apps.

Tether app is so you can send a data signal from that device, it isn't for connecting to a device that has data, you need to turn on wifi and locate the name of your hotspot and connect.
I can confirm also. Prime is not seeing my Wireless tether app or Barnacle. WTF is going on? this is a big deal as I use tether methods for internet to tablet away from home. What did they change to make it not work anymore?

[Q] Tethering to HTC Thunderbolt

Is anyone else having problems tethering to a rooted Thunderbolt? I have tried PDANet Tablet. The phone and tablet see each other on bluetooth. PDAnet running on both units and say connected but no data transfers.
I have also tried the built in WIFI tethering with the "Infected" rom that I am using. Again it shows connected on both sides but no data is transferring.
The WIFI at my house is working fine on the Prime.
Ad-Hoc tethering to the Prime is a known problem w/ the ICS update.

Try Open Garden (should be available on Android Market)
I have a thunderbolt as well and the only tethering app I could get to work with the Prime was 'Open Garden'. I tried Barnacle, WIFI Tether and one other one, but none of them worked. Not sure what is different about Open Garden but it seems to do the trick.
I tether my phone to my prime every day at work without issue......phone specs in sig. Just using the in-built wifi tethering from cm
There is already many threads about tethering. Couldn't people read and search before starting a new thread? All that have been said above have already been said many times.
I tether with my thunderbolt running built in app. Running Gingeritis 3D and SHIFTSENSE roms.
