2 major issues - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have had this phone for a number of months. It's not the US branded galaxy S2. I own the SHW-M250K which is the KT's S2 in South Korea. So one issues I am having has been the USB port I have tried cleaning it and it has worked for a while but it has been starting up again with the charge status connecting and disconnecting when I don't have it plugged up. Issue 2 just started up a few minutes ago. When there is a battery attached to the phone it has a strong hissing sound. Not sure where it is coming from but it is strongest on the back side. It kind of sounds like when a battery is about to burst. I have checked with many batteries so that is not the case. I have also plugged it up with no battery in it, well it does nothing won't even boot so thats all i can really do for tests. Any body have any suggestions?

I am trying to avoid going to the service center as, this phone is my only source of communication with My chain of command and friends and family. So i am trying to do everything I can and leaving the service center as a last resort. or else that is at a minimum a 3 day wait for a turn around.

Given you've tried other batteries, or at least that's the impression I got from your post (if you haven't you may as well try another battery if you're dead set against sending it to a service center), I don't see what possible fix anyone on here could possibly give you ? Something is clearly going on with the charging circuitry of the phone in all likelihood, and there isn't anything you can do as a user to fix that.
JJE is on the money (as always) and only a service center would be capable of fixing that for you.

/sigh, I was hoping to avoid doing that. I love this phone, but damn it is a pain in the ass sometimes. Well thanks for the help. I was hoping there was something else.

Sit tight tho. You never know, someone else may have had this problem & may be able to offer you something over the next day or two. Stranger things have happened If you don't get a fix/solution by the end of the weekend you can send it off on Monday I guess. But in saying that, if JJE hasn't seen an issue like this resolved without the phone being sent in for repair, you can safely say it can't be. He's pretty much seen it all on here.

System clock resetting to Sat 1 Jan. 2000 at every battery change

Simple scenario: I have a couple batteries, I'd rather use one and then swap it out when it's 10%, inserting the other charged one.
With every device I've owned, removing the battery didn't automatically lead to losing the date&time settings (not even on my Nokia 6111, as long as you were fast in plugging the new one in), while with this expensive beast of phone, it appears that even if you slightly flip out the battery and reinsert it in a matter of less than a second, rebooting WILL lead to the clock being reset to the first of january of the year 2000.
On my HD2, leaving the battery out for half a day didn't reset the clock.
This behaviour doesn't change whether you set the clock to automatic or not.
What surprises me is that noone in the internet seems to be swapping batteries on their S II, because noone else reported this problem.
Do any of you have any kind of suggestion?
Leaving the clock to "automatic" also doesn't appear to be resetting to the correct date, not even if I set on and off airplane mode to re-shake with my carrier.
Does the fact that noone replied mean that I am the only one having this problem (which would call for a warranty servicing), or that noone ever needs to swap batteries, or lastly that noone does even care?

For starters though, since this would somehow ease my mind, does your clock also get reset if you unplug the battery for a short while? (suppose you own a SGSII as well since you're in here )

I would exclude it depends anyhow from the custom roms I've installed, I never tried unplugging battery on the stock rom before flashing.
This never happened to me in any new phone. It used to happen in my old Nokia phones when they get old (after 1 or 2 years)
There is an internal battery to keep the clock which died in your GSII.
Warranty shall cover it

So here's the news. Had to wait for monday to come in order to call the phone support.
Not very much surprisingly they told me that the system clock resetting to Sat 1 Jan 2000 whenever you take out the battery is "perfectly normal" (yeah, welcome to 2011).
Which collides with what you, @JJEgan and @salamt, reported.
So it makes me think the gal at the phone was bullsh*tting me.
She confirmed though that flashing custom roms will invalidate the warranty. No change there.

I take my battery out frequently and clock stays the same presume left out for a couple of days it would lose the charge and clock reset .

So this is a good indication of how samsung support tells you nice tales. Actually this scares me more than the fact that the phone's backup battery was DOA.

my S2 keeps the clock running without battery at least for half an hour, so i assume your device has an malfunction with the internal battery as user salamt already has stated.
I did sent in my S2 already 3 times to Samsung warranty support because of another hardware fault (sound of lower Microphone is very low and stuttering, so people have trouble to hear me).
Everytime i get it back my clock says something with Year 2000 - Hey the phone isnt that old
My HD2 is keeping the clock running for weeks without an battery ...
Send in your phone for warranty, if its important for you to switch batteries.
But be aware, Samsungs customer support isnt the best
I did buy the official Samsung 2000mAh battery with nice cover from Amazon and its nearby not possible to suck the S2 empty on one day.

More confirmations about this glitch of mine, that is a real glitch instead of "completely normal feature" as the Samsung support would like to pass it by.
Thank you for adding yet another precious feedback with this aspect, as now I am positive the phone is defective.
You are correct, the phone doesn't have internal batteries, it's a capacitor, which runs the timing chip, which controls everything on the phone, which without power should run for about 48 hours give or take. Faulty capacitor is definitely grounds for a warranty repair, and if you gets someone who says it's "normal" ask for their supervisor, and if their supervisor is still that ignorant, keep going up the chain.
You have to realize that "customer support" for most companies basically work the same as insurance companies, the fewer the claims, the better, so if you can make a customer live with an issue that doesn't kill the phone, they do it. However, a faulty capacitor can surge a mainboard, and truly kill electronics, get it fixed while you still have a warranty to fall back on!

Sure my hd2 now feels like a slow brick compared to the superlight all-plastic S2, but at least I know it's been making me company for the last couple years, and I trust it.

Just to confirm, is there really no "battery" or some power source (like the BIOS battery) for phone to "remember" the time and date? Instead it uses a capacitor? just wanna know in case customer service bull**** me. But i dont think a battery (even those coin-sized) would fit in the sgs2
Since I've long since sold my SGS2 and now am using a SGN, which does remember the time after a battery swap, I can tell you definitely it's a hardware problem.
Alas, support WILL bs you if they can, but I suppose if you know they are doing that, you can make a strong voice and have them issue a repair/switch service for you, by telling them up front you know you're right and wll be speaking with a superior/write anout it on your blog.

I agree that they were BS'ing you. Otherwise, why would there be component BAT500 which other users have reported Samsung service centres have told them has leaked and destroyed their WiFi chip? http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=28036#c471
BAT500 is an EDL Capacitor which stores charge while the battery is in then slowly dischargers when the battery is removed. My phone started loosing the clock immediately when the battery is removed but its stopped now. I believe its could be one of two things but I can't be 100% sure. I had my phone on charge every night for that last couple of weeks and I noticed the issue. Over the last two days I have let the phone run flat and charged it again and now it remembers the time when I remove the battery for at least a minute. The other theory is that I also had wifi always on for the last couple of weeks and that also has been off for two days now. The wifi chip is right next to the capacitor and if the chip was to get warm it could cause the capacitor to malfunction.

thanks for all the valuable inputs. i will go to SSC next week. Have been putting it off cos tmr i am going overseas and i nid my S2 with me.
Hopefully they are willing to change.

Lapdock battery issue

I bought a refurbished Lapdock from All4Celullar and it works amazing while plugged in, but it doesn't work if plugged out.
I live in Argentina and it would be more expensive to return it, so I'm trying to fix it myself.
The battery indicator works while plugged in (3 dots first time I touched, 5 an hour later) so I guess there is a battery inside but with some malfunction.
Does anybody have any idea about how to repair it? Or things to check to identify what's the faulty part?
I googled a lot and it seems I'm the only one (I guess the lapdock without battery powered is such an evident flaw that everybody returns them). I'll be very grateful if you can give me a hand, at least pointing to something I should read.
Did you ever find a fix for this? It seems that mine has developed the same problem. MAJOR issue for me, I literally love the little guy and don't have the money to replace it right now.
I guess if nothing pops up, I might just have to find someone who is willing to buy it despite the issue.
In my case, I get 5 flashing lights when I try the battery indicator
I know double posting is frowned upon, but I wanted to present a slightly more obvious solution to this issue (because it's what I did)
Try to send it in to Motorola. If you haven't had it for a year and bought it new, or as a refurb, you should be able to warranty it for repair or replacement. I sent mine in a couple days ago and they have it currently. Hopefully I'll get it back and in working order soon.
The worst that might happen is they tell you no. IF that happens, then you might want to try to find another way to fix it.
It's always surprising how frequently people don't think to consider manufacturer's warranties. Typically you don't need a receipt or anything, I didn't for my lapdock. I look forward to getting it back.

Guys I owned a Galaxy SIII white GT-19300... had it for 3-4 months, bought it brand new. used really carefully, only had one or two falls that's it.
Finally it decided to crap all of a sudden like it had a silent heart attack, just a couple of hours ago. It wasn't charging or was in process of updating or anything. Just that I was sitting and having a sms conversation where in the middle it just won't budge at all. It just went completely pulseless.
These are the symptoms:
-No display
-Won't power up by any means
-No charging light
-No sign of booting up
What I tried:
-Hard reset
-Remove SIM and SD card, still no activity
-Swapped battery of working S3
What should be the next step?. Thankfully warranty period hasn't elapsed yet.
How should I approach now?. Will the warranty company replace the set or more likely create some unsolvable obstacles, like them assuming fall or label the phone rooted etc?

Warrant may be void if its rooted or custom rom or modified status or rom counter above zero .
No way to reset those on a non booting phone .
Dropped damage incurred again who knows until they take the phone apart .

If the phone's truly hard-bricked, there's no way the service center would be able to discern that. Dead is dead.
Agreed, if the phone is truly dead no one in the sammy repair could able to detect that.

it sounds like you really did everything right to troubleshoot it huh.. well let me just throw a few things out, you probably didnt, but hopefully did overlook..
the cord you're trying to charge it with, could it be not working/charging it?
have you tried another cord, or maybe even a USB cord? was it plugged in when it died? some low quality/defective cords can have some weird effects on phones, like less responsive digitizers, or even short out a phone
did you have any custom CPU settings? over/under clock/volt? had you played with you min/max CPU settings?
it doesn't turn on, did you determin this by seeing no display? seeing if there's any hapticfeedback, or even calling it from another phone and seeing if it rings on the callers side.
I know it seems silly but I'm just throwing out things from personal expirence ..
so now your phone really is dead, well having it under warrenty is great. having worked at an AT&T corporate retailer, I can tell you what happens on our side when you bring in a damaged phone.. well try it ourselves, well ask what happened, if you don't know well ask things like, 'did you drop it', 'or it was in contact with water'. (were actually required to ask, since these things aren't covered under warranty. which let me say, is so broken that we push the extended warranty on you, because it covers basically nothing.. we have a quota that says we need to sell X amount of a list of product/services each month.. but I digress).. anyway, once you tell us it just died out of nowhere we take your phone, put it in an envelope and ship it back to the manufacturer. in the mean time well offer you a loaner phone if you need one (just whatever we have on hand at the time, usually phones we get from trade-ins) (you keep your battery and sim) , and we put a 50 dollar hold on your card (yes on a creditcard, not your account) until your phone comes back in and we get our loaner phone. they'll send you a phone back to us, not yours, usually a refurbished version, then we call you and let you know your phones ready.
NEVER have I ever seen or heard anything ever of checking for root. most of our reps don't even know what that is.. once we submit a replacement form, the new phone is on transit to our shop usually by the next day (meaning they send out the replacement before they get the one we sent).
my advice is once you're sure the phone is dead, take it in to your retailer, tell them it died out of nowhere while you were texting, and it won't turn back on. you don't need to go into anymore detail than that..

Didn't mention it. I underwent much thoroughly then what I typed.. Yup tried 3 different cables, couple of chargers, usb cable.
And no it really wasn't plugged in. I really was expecting a sms at that time, when it took too long, I took it out from the pocket and voila DEAD!

Tried everything you mentioned and even more then that!
yup lifeless like a brick.
** By the way an incidental finding found before claiming warranty. While having the battery in the phone. It was still warm. Removed it. Became cooler, upon reinstall, it became warm again. What gives??!

Thanks for the detailed reply man, really appreciated. Especially since I was already trying to read the minds of these warranty dealers!
So just a while ago I gave it in for warranty. I was adamant of it going dead while I was doing an sms (although true!).. just said no to whatever cause they tried to find (wasn't any, honest!). They were pressing me though for the graze it got (a month ago).. I said 90% of the phones are scratched, and how many do die? He went okay we'll see then, 'yeah you are right we buy that, most that gets damaged from a fall is a phone with shattered screen!"'. Next question, the tricky one!. Did you modify/update software?
I was like, I keep my phones as stock and was totally acting alien to terms like 'rooting' 'firmware' 'kernel' etc (not being honest, but i'm sure that's not the cause)
He was like okay hand it over, we'll do the rest!
Hopefully they don't ever get to revive the mobo or i'm screwed for real!
my phone just died after flashing morfic A10 kernel. i am running stock rooted rom and the best part my sgs 3 was bought 11/18/12 from target, cant go to download mode, cant go to recovery i even tried adb recovery and download mode hoping to turn on nada, charge for an hour no led flashing. my sgs3 totally dead. called target and they said just bring it and they will replace it with new one if the phone wont turn on. is that mean i will be okay even my phone is rooted?

Thank God.. got my SIII fixed in warranty, now it's back to life!
Just had a motherboard replacement, no further details given.
Hence kind of proven!:

[Q] Samsung S3 Piece of CRAP!! Won't CHARGE

I know this thread had been on here already and i look for help but still found no resolution to the problems. So Please i am bringing it up again to see if any help can be offered again.
This started back in April, my phone suddenly stopped charging one day from any outlet, charger and even through the computer. There are times it charge but very slow and other times it won't charge at all. I have tried new chargers, batteries, outlets, rebooted and even had new roms in there. All did not do anything to help. I purchased this phone from Expansys- USA. The warranty was still good so I sent it in. The wait time was 6-8 weeks.
Those bastards at Samsung made me wait 3 months and I barely got it back this week. After 3 GODDAMN months in repair, it came back in no better condition than when it left. WTFFFF!!!!!
Now I am extremely angry for wasting my time like that. Since it came back, i have more problems than when it left. The phone now does not recognize any charger other than the Samsung Official charger. It will only light up the charging symbol from a Samsung charger or when i plugged into a computer. Other than that it won't recognize any other charger. Now the first day i got it back, it charged fine. Then a few hours later, the same problem surfaced and now i am back at square one.
Please help me, this is really frustrating and i have not found any solution anywhere on this forum or other sites. Even Samsung didn't do jack for me. Now my only options left are to get a new phone (which i do not want to) or replace the USB ports, and I am not even sure if it is the USB ports.
PLEASE HELPPPPP!!!

otherwise, if you are not satisfied with Samsung buy another phone...

Thanks, but the service center is in the UK for international S3 and i have no contacts with them. Expansys USA won't give me any info.
Try use another cable, i encountered the same problem, i changed 3 charger but my problem was cable.
Okay thanks for reassuring me that warranties are not only carp in my country. Maybe your port need cleaning, also does your phone enter driving mode at random? As I had a similar issue.

Problems with electronic items aren't uncommon, failures with Samsung don't appear any higher than most other manufacturers but do occur.
Buying a model with no warranty service in your continent is probably best avoided, you might have been lucky but the chance of requiring a repair during the two year period is worth considering.
The phone is not a piece of crap Its just your unluckiness. Hope you get your device repaired soon

I dont mean to offend anyone, I apologize for it. I mean to say that Samsung is not helping me out as it should. I have tried numerous cables and also clean my ports many times.
Unluckiness may be this time for me, but my issue is not an isolated incident. However, coming from a high tier phone like this is disappointing.
I have tried contacting Samsung UK who told me they handle warranty repairs through a 3rd party. I contacted that 3rd party, and i'm not sure if that 3rd party is the one Expansys-USA sent my phone too. However, that 3rd party said they don't handle international repairs -__-, back to square one. Now that i got my phone back, I really don't know what to do. I believed i have exhausted all my options and now trying to replace the port. But I don't see any issues with it, but i'll update after. I really can't afford another phone.
I had a recent similar problem with my phone refusing to charge or taking 2-3 hours to increase by a few miserable percent. This followed some slight liquid (beer) entering the reverse of the phone following a boozy night out that resulting in no recollection of what actually happened. I suspected the battery had suffered liquid damage and following contact with EE regarding a possible replacement on the insurance I paid for they refused to replace it (I never told them what actually happened). A week or so later I simply tired using another charger which worked without any issues at all. Reverting back to the original for confirmation, this did the same thing as before. I was fortunate not to have ruined the phone and/or battery and the issue came back to the charger. It's always worth a shot
WEll the phone finally wokrs now!! ANd the problem was hardware this entire time -_-.....i replaced the usb port and everything good again. The usb port didn't appear to show any signs of wear and tear either. Well now this is my solution for those with similar problems. thanks for all your help again.

[Q] Battery "discharges" out of the blue

My wife's been complaining about her sgs3, i9300a phone a lot lately, so I've been taking some time of to have a long hard look at it.
the phone in itself works quite well, it is somewhat guarded (she tends to drop it a lot but most of the time it's actually in it's case) and we've switched the screen once (well, not the screen, the top half of the phone to be exact)
the phone used to have a stock 4.1.3 (I think) samsung rom on it for the past year, it's been working well untill a couple of months ago I think and it does still function properly on light use
so what is the issue?
if you'll start a game, or anything that'll cause the phone to heat up - the screen would flicker a bit (not always) and the battery will suddenly report to be down to 0%, shutting down the device right after.
this sudden discharge is obviously not real, as the minute I connect it to a charger and boot up the phone it shows it's last charge before the phone was shut down - however the issue keeps on repeating itself over and over again.
If the phone is connected to a wall charger (or a pc via USB cable) this doesn't happen.
I've been trying to install a kitkat on the device (it have been working slowly so she needed an upgrade) yet the issue persists.
I've been reading around the Internet, some claim it's a faulty battery issue so I'm ordering one from eBay, however - I can't shake the feeling it might some other faulty hardware, perhaps a memory chip gone bad? as I can't see the connection between a bad battery and a flickering screen.
Truth to be told - I'm not a fan of android, or samsung, so I don't know much of the history of problems with it (if there is any) and I've been hoping that there is someone around here who might encountered (or heard) about my issue and would be able to shed some light for me.

Yeah... I'm planning on stealing my boss S3's battery for some testing later on today if he'll ever decide to show up...

I did hope someone encountered and fixed/learned about this problem as the device has 2 years of history at least...
if it'll come to motherboard switching I'll just force the little lady to switch to a real phone such as an HTC, or maybe go to WP
It was the battery..
Perhaps I should've guessed it by the fact it was REALLY hard closing the case... but it was only after I saw a normal battery that I noticed the real difference.
so for future reference to whomever might meet the same behavior - my battery was about 1.5 the size of what it should be and was quite round,
better call those Samsung representatives and get a replacement before it explodes
Anyone has experience with those 4200Mhz batteries? worth the money or should I just get a genuine one (it cost about the same in here, like 4$ more), the reviews are quite mixed.
