ATT customer here. Is there a way to set up Roaming on this phone? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just like the title says. Some areas where i drive i dont have any signal at all, and i was wondering if there is a way to set this phone up to roam on T-mobile or another gsm network if i am outside the coverage area. I know the phone is capable of using t-mobiles edge network according to specs.

It doesnt work if you check the data roaming under mobile network settings?

[Q] Can I set my P509 to GPRS only?

Our T-Mobile service sucks here is Arkansas. Where I work I have TMO gprs service and where I live I have ATT edge via TMO roaming. I have ATT 3G but apparently TMO does not use that for roaming.
My issue is I want to use Pandora to listen to on the way to work, but with edge service it vibrates the speakers horribly, now in gprs it does not do this. So is there a way to set the Optimus T P509 to gprs only, so that it will use that and I can listen to Pandora on my drive?
I saw one option which was to use an electrostatic bag and place the phone on it, it works some, but the buzz and hum always comes back after a few seconds.
It is a shame I have to revert to old gprs to get stuff to work, 4G, shoot TMO can't even do 3G.
Not every carrier is perfect so its not right to bash TMO because every carrier has bad service areas. For your question, in network settings u can check to use only 2G. Hopefully I solved your problem(I'm not sure if gprs is 2g).

You can not set only GPRS. If EDGE is supported by your carrier then you have to use it. There is no such option.

[Q] Data working on foreign carrier?

Hello there just want to make sure is this phonr working on vodafone New Zealand?
A local website says the phone only support vodafone 2G
Vodafone's mobile network operates on the following frequencies:
A 2G GSM voice network on 900/1800MHz (almost every GSM mobile should work on these frequencies)
A 2G GPRS data network on 900/1800MHz
A 3G UMTS data network for voice, video calls and data on 2100MHz
A 3G HSDPA network on 2100MHz
I know in some places voice call and sms are working, not the 3G data

This might answer your question. But looks like it should work on 3g

Watch out, though, people have reported it's not possible to enter customized APNs on the Photon due to Sprint's software customizations. This is necessary for some foreign carriers to have data access.

Shall I just give it a try? It is a lot of money though
My Photon works fine. I'm using it here in the Philippines...
3G is 2100 over here.
Bought it on eBay sealed and untouched. So when I took it out, inserted my SIM, and turned it on, it was trying to get on the Sprint network to activate. Since that wasn't going to happen, I just let it be. Soon enough it got tired and displayed a screen saying activation failed. I clicked OK and then it let me continue onto the phone where I changed the network settings.
I set mine up to "Any GSM/UMTS" and immediately it recognized the new network. I created a new APN to test data and it worked.
The only thing I hate is that whenever I reboot the phone, it always tries to activate. I think maybe I should delete Sprint Zone so that it stops doing that...

Roaming Issue

I am on 3 Ireland and i visit the UK quite often and the phone automatically defaults to 3 UK, but ive noticed when i return to Ireland only in certain places for example in work the R (for roaming) letter shows beside the signal bar in the statusbar and it wont connect to the Internet, when i go to settings > Mobile networks >Network Operators > select automatically it doesn't always reset it to what it should be whereas sometimes it does, this only appears to happen in certain places too and it's a bit annoying to be honest, pointless talking to 3 Customer service too they keep saying "you must be in a bad signal area" right since when was Dublin City Centre a bad signal area then.
Does anyone know why the phone is doing this, as i said it only appears to happen in a certain area, my SGSII never gave me this problem at all.
Bump..
anyone have any idea as to why phone behaves like this?
Mine shows the R when I don't have very strong 3 signal so it hands off to whichever network 3 have their network sharing agreement with.
Do you have the data while roaming box checked in mobile network settings?

No always have that unchecked as im not roaming and only use WiFi or my UK SIM card when im outside Ireland.
It's bizzare because it only happens in a certain place in the Dublin 3 area,i haven't seen it happen anywhere else, it's a bit annoying actually as i cant access the Internet then off of a sudden the R goes away and im back to normal.

Well check that box because even though you are in Ireland it is still considered roaming because you aren't using 3's network when the R is there.
I'm given two choices on my galaxy nexus, national roaming and international roaming, but on my S3 its all lumped into one checkbox.
You'll need to have it checked to get Internet connectivity when the R comes up.

Vodafones network is bigger so they don't need to share.
3 share network towers with someone (02 I think) to help boost their national coverage percentage.
You can't get 3g data while the R is there, only 2g.
But Vodafone don't have unlimited data and where I live 3 hspa+ is faster so there's the trade off.

Roaming not working at all
I got to both UK and Germany and I got a strange behavior: I was connected to a network with full bars but notification bar was showing "emergency call only". No way to both call, text or receive.
It worked intermittently for the 10% of time only.
No luck switching to 2G only, selecting an operator manually or rebooting the device.
I'm on AFL6 fw, but it did not work on previous two releases as well.
My home carrier is 3 Italy.
When I got back home I had exactly the same issue when moving out from flight mode, a reboot solved it tough.
Sweden 3 and gets connectivity lost due to roaming every time I fire up wifi

Cannot make make/receive calls on LTE

First time posting on here so please don't tear me a new ass if I'm doing something wrong lol.
I just got a Galaxy Note I (SGH-I717) on AT&T.
Initially I was having problems with reception and 4G and not getting LTE at all. I finally got LTE working my setting up the PTA APN and by dialing *#2263# and selecting a different preferred band (I chose "LTE ALL" in the LTE sub-menu and saved it). I put the SIM back in, powered the phone back up and LTE was working. However my signal bars haven't gone past one bar while on LTE. I get data, and can even send and receive MMS/SMS, but cannot send/receive calls.
Someone please tell me if I did something wrong or am leaving out any vital info.

Perhaps the radio should be updated. The latest official ATT radio is UCMD3.
Check if you have it under settings/about/phone status/baseband. It works on all builds but is the newest radio which improves signal sometimes.

That is infact the newest radio. Unfortunately I'm rockin this phone on T-Mobile, maybe some other people could chime in on ATT.
Apn settings sometimes make a difference. So check this thread on that here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26821716

I'm pretty positive that my APN settings are correct (I'll post them in a minute), I think it is probably the band preference I selected in the *#2263# menu. I do know for a fact that the SGH-I717 runs on the lowest LTE band.

Those appear to be as follows in the link I posted. The only difference i saw was BEARER: LTE (default is unspecified) play with this one.. that was different in the post.
Other then that, I know ATT and Tmobile only use LTE Band 4 in the USA anyways.
So LTE ALL under the service menu wouldnt help. Was your coverage always that bad?
Please someone with ATT help this poor soul out. I'm at wits end. Usually this would be something to bug your service provider about. Myabe they can refresh something on your account, or give you a newer SIM card at your local store.

Yes, unfortunately service has always been this bad. I have called AT&T several times/been to the AT&T store and talked to a representative and they have done the following:
- Checked/rechecked my IMEI number (it always matches)
- Checked and rechecked my SIM number (before AND after I received a new SIM card
- Unregistered/Re-registered my phone with the towers
- Called a tech out to the tower to make sure nothing is going on the them (I know its not, my buddies all have LTE running fine on their devices)
Thank you so much, scariola. You've been a helped all you can.
RESOLVED
I believe I have fixed the problem.
I dialed *#2263# to get to the Band Selection screen. I already had selected "LTE ALL" under the LTE Preference menu. I unselected it, chose Back and then End (both under the softkey menu). I then re-dialed *#2263# to get back into the Band Selection menu except this time I selected "Automatic" and chose End in the softkey menu. Re-inserted SIM, and rebooted.
No I get signal 3-5 bars, 4G and 4G LTE where strong signal is available.
I thought LTE was only data and could not be used for calls.

Right. The data is the 3g/4g connection and the symbol next to the bars is the data speed. The bars is the strength of the gsm/phone signal.
It actually sounds like the OP was involved in a tower maintenance scenario and probably didn't matter what he did.
You can do the same settings changing from the mobile data settings menu.
You can't do the same settings from the mobile data settings menu. There you can only mess with data bands. You can turn LTE off or on on my Canadian ROM but you can't use it as the only band. And I didn't think you could even change this on ATT ROMs/radios at all. I believe he used LTE as the one and only bands for phone and data which caused his issue. I have achieved this same result by messing with those band setting found by *#2263#.
However the ability to send/receive texts but no calls does not make sense. That could have been tower issues since they both use the same phone band.

Er, what?
Is that a JB thing because I know it wasn't present on the ATT ICS ROM. Also where is the LTE setting??
The default is "fastest available". If you choose the high speed setting, it will connect to whatever is best.
I assumed JB stock because the OP said he just got the phone.

It's on the canadian version of JB in the settings/mobile network. Missing from att JB though.
You can however force LTE only through the service menu. Att and tmobile use band 4. Not sure about anyone else.
You must dial *#2263# into dialer and select LTE and choose the band your provider supports. That will force LTE only. Dial the same thing into dialer and select automatic* to go back to jumping through LTE/WCDMA/GSM.
I understand it is on the Canadian version as I am using it. The Canadian version also includes LTE. I know how this all works. I have a Rogers note. But my question was to ranger on where he pulled that screenshot from. I always had an LTE option both on ICS and JB. And it was my understanding that ATT left this feature out on all versions and their modem was locked.
Sent from my SGH-I717R using xda premium
You can't force LTE if its not available. Its best to leave it at auto and let the modem do Its job of connecting to the best signal.

It may have been, but soon after I *thought* I had fixed the problem, the same issue restarted. I believe it was an issue with the phone hardware itself, maybe the antenna. I don't know. I sold the phone and got an S3.

I used to have that problem until i changed the MNC to 260

[Q] One click 3G ON and MOBILE DATA ON

Is there any app out there that can toggle both MOBILE DATA and 3G mode at the same time? I don't like my cell working in 3G mode for talk, but I do like 3G for internet. So I would like to toggle both at the same time. There are some apps which you can program to do stuff like that, in a sequence I think, but I don't remember the names. An specific app for that would be welcome also. When toggle off it would turn off both 3G and mobile DATA.
This is motorola razr d3 XT920 with android 4.1
anyone???
I believe no one has answered your question yet because it doesn't really make much sense in its present form. 3G IS Mobile Data.

That's not quite right. MOBILE DATA means operator (cell phone company) data... it can be 2G, 3G, 4G ... what I mean in my question is a program that would turn on 3G data mode (phone can work both in 2G and 3G, so set it to 3G) AND activate MOBILE DATA (meaning the phone can use the network operator data).

I am quite aware of what Mobile Data is. But your point is that Mobile Data means any 2g/3g/4g and you want to turn on 3G and Mobile Data? How does that make it more clear, exactly? If you have 3G on, then you are using your Mobile Data from your network operator / cell phone company.

The point is, what you are wanting to do might make sense in your head, but you are not articulating it in a way anyone is able to figure out. I've asked quite a few friends into phones and no one else has understood either.
