Does turning off gps improve the wifi signals on the Primes? It did for mine - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Hey guys! First off, let me say that my Asus has had constantly weaker wifi signals than my Xoom or Samsung galaxy tab devices, using the speedtest app my Prime always gets 3mb less than the other devices which is an issue that most of us are having, so I decided to do a few test using all three devices and found something interesting. I ran the speed test on all 3 devices 4 times, one after the other, and noticed of course that my Prime lagged behind by an average of 3mb. I then decided to go into settings, location services and turn off the gps. Now guess what, my Prime is now beating both my Xoom and Galaxy tab by an average of 3-4mbs! I tested this multiple times, moves further from the router, and this was a constant result..
Which made me think, could the weak wifi issue be caused by the interference by the GPS signal trying to obtain a lock, which is being *blocked*by the metal casing on the back of the Primes?? This would make sense as when you use the speed test app, it tries to find your location by using the gps built into the device. I hope Gary will read this and test it himself, to confirm. Guys, please try this out an let me know if your wifi speeds increase once GPS is off?? Please dont reply with rude comments, I am only reporting what has worked for me.
I dont mind sacrificing my GPS for a now faster wifi

I always have my gps off since is was killed in the 1/17 update. That update made it completely useless. Even with gps off, i still have a weak wifi signal compared to my evo 3d. It also drops in and out.

Hate to be a broken record but Wi-Fi will always be weak as long as your prime still has a solid aluminum backplate on it. If you guys haven't noticed yet what other devices with Wi-Fi can you think of had a issue with weak signal where there ended up being a software fix for it? I've been working IT for 20 years it doesn't happen the Wi-Fi adapter in the Prime is perfectly fine it's just being shielded by the aluminum.

Is that the same reason why my GPS and WIFI works so well in my HTC Desire HD with it's aluminum unicover body?

Big difference is that it has no problem getting out of the front face of your phone Primes Wi-Fi antenna is sandwich in alum

I tried turning GPS off as the OP suggested. My results were mixed at best.

>Is that the same reason why my GPS and WIFI works so well in my HTC Desire HD with it's aluminum unicover body?
The Desire HD doesn't have an all-aluminum back.

Okay, after reading around on the net for a bit, I did the following.
1) Use Wi-Fi Analyzer to check for any kind of wireless spot that your Prime may pick up at home. Check what channel they use and pick something different for yours. Mine had the same channel as a couple of others so I picked one that is higher.
2) Mine is dual band and had guest on so I disabled both guest and 5GHz, leaving only 2.4Ghz enabled.
Testing results:
Close to the router, the max down went up to 9Mbps compared to 6Mbps from before. Of course, my tablet is pulling an Apple. I had to have the backplate facing the router to get that or else I get about 2Mbps less with it away from the router.
In the living room downstairs, not a big jump. ~6Mbps compared to ~5Mbps from before. Of course the Acer laptop got >13Mbps at the same place last time.
In my bedroom, also downstairs, the max I could achieve was 5Mbps where I could only get less than 3Mbps before.
I ventured down to the basement, just by the stairs and didn't go far. I got like 6Mbps there. I never tested in the basement before since I thought it would be worse so I didn't bother.
So, it definitely did improve for mine. Of course this is temp because you can only make changes to your network and not anywhere else. I have a few things that are only Wireless-G, such as PS3, so I have to use Wireless-G. Maybe I'll try later with Mixed mode or play around with Wireless-N mode only and see. I got about 20Mbps with my bro's D-link Wireless-N only, in the same room.

Okay, stayed up until 3am last night to do some more testing on Wi-Fi. I fed my router Tomato firmware.
Results:
*Max achieved if hit the sweet spot. And somewhat consistent but only if I hit it. Wired speedtest showed ~23Mbps or a bit better consistently.
-G-Only mode:
--By the router, max ~13Mbps consistently (up from 9Mbps before)
--Living room downstairs, max ~16Mbps and >13Mbps consistently (up from ~6Mbps and comparable to the Acer laptop. Then again, I haven't tried with Acer laptop post-Tomato just yet)
--My room downstairs, max ~12Mbps and consistently hit ~ 10Mbps - 12Mpbs (up from 5Mbps previously)
--Basement, max ~3Mbps (down from 6Mbps but it was late and I got tired of finding the sweet spot!)
-N-only mode:
--By the router, max ~2Mbps consistently. WTH!!! (was able to pull ~20Mbps by my bro's twice as cheap D-link router. So I didn't test the rest.)
By the way, Wi-Fi Analyzer showed weaker strength after I slapped on Tomato. Followed some instruction to modify settings to improve the signal strength that proved to work for some, but didn't help with mine. Not sure if it helped with throughput though. I gotta play around some more when I have time.
Now, I also had to use channel 8, one that no other surrounding networks have. That again helped. If I moved it a little bit away from the sweet spot, the speed dropped like mad. Wi-Fi strength didn't really mean much. The sweet spot in my room was where I only got 1 bar. Moved a few inches, not even, to get 2 bars. Thought it should be better? Not a chance. Couldn't get it to > 4Mbps.
Now, my house is 2400 sq ft not including the basement. If map it out in 2D, my computer room is far top right and my room is far bottom left. Each level's separation is pretty big because of high ceilings.
I'm somewhat happy with it because I know what it's capable of but it's just not practical. I may hit great throughput with the sweet spots in my house but not doing much outside of my house since I can't modify those networks. And some sweet spots, not too comfy. In the living room, I have to hold it up and tilt it upward a little. In my bedroom, I just lay it flat on my bed.
Forgot to add that my up speed almost always hit the max of 2.5Mbps no-matter-what.
Oh, and turning off GPS didn't help with mine.

say nothing about wifi chip. still know nothing about BT
Thanks! I wish they had told us what wireless chip it is.
BT chip is sort of meaningless. Look for the BT antenna. Without that, it does not matter if it has a BT chip of not.
Probably the same antenna as the NC.

Some will find it not meaningless. Sure for some things it is not useful, but it still allowed the ability to pair it with a wireless keyboard and with wii remotes for retro gaming. I believe some used bluetooth to connect gps device for cars and such so it is not a total loss.
*not disagreeing that antenna is important but it would be nice to know if any bt support will come.
My understanding was that without an antenna - the BT signal will not leave the NT enclosure, much less reach a wireless device next to it.
Would be glad to know I am wrong on this - but I don't think I am.

If it lacks the antenna but has the chip, might be possible to swap out a NC antenna.

Or make one. A little dipole isn't much more than a cat hair. Usually getting on the board is the challenge.
Here is a link to a BT antenna datasheet:
http://www.auden.com.tw/TRC/tw/product/pdf/41.pdf
Theye are easy to come by, very generic, and very inexpensive - but surface mount technology is very hard to add after the fact.
At the very least - hopefully the NT has the unpopulated lands for one.

Perhaps I am wrong but I didn't believe the NC had an antenna and that was why the range was so short, ie ~foot max.
after searching lots of threads it looks like nc shared the same antenna as wifi. there is no dedicated antenna for bluetooth though in NC, so either it is sharing it or it's non-existant.
That has to be an easy one for someone here to answer - did the NC have a BT antenna?
I thought it did...

It's a lousy teardown compared to the one for the KF. Half of it is devoted to meaningless appearance comparisons, and none of the PCB parts are shown in detail.
Anyway, battery spec is same as the NC (3.7V, 4Ah), and is less than the KF (3.7V, 4.4Ah). Interesting that cited battery life is longer than both the KF and the older NC, especially given the NT's x2 RAM. Either somebody is being optimistic, which is likely, or the KF's custom UI sucks both speed and power.
The Bluetooth situation looks to be the same as the NC and KF, even if there isn't a close-up of the chip involved. There's a single connector for the wifi antenna pigtail. The short of it is that BT will probably the work same as the NC, ie close-range only since no BT antenna.

The Nook Color's layout of the wifi module is almost identical (below). The ZDNet's NC teardown was more detailed, but didn't remove the heat shielding for the money shot.
Thank you! Those pictures help a lot. That last one is an excellent picture.
Thanks for the bluetooth info guys , here is the spec sheet of the screen but it says is TFT not IPS or I am wrong http://lcd.eechain.com/datasheet_detail.asp?bg_key=E1&sk_nub=LD070WS2-SL02

IPS is a type of TFT panel
Edit: IPS is not a type of TFT
IPS from wiki:
In-Plane Switching was developed by Hitachi Ltd. in 1996 to improve on the poor viewing angle and the poor color reproduction of TN panels at that time.[6] Its name comes from the main difference from TN panels, that the crystal molecules move parallel to the panel plane instead of perpendicular to it. This change reduces the amount of light scattering in the matrix, which gives IPS its characteristic wide viewing angles and good color reproduction.[7]
Initial iterations of IPS technology were plagued by slow response time and a low contrast ratio but later evolutions have made marked improvements to these shortcomings. Because of its wide viewing angle and accurate color reproduction (with almost no off-angle color shift), IPS is widely employed in high-end monitors aimed at professional graphic artists, although with the recent fall in price it has been seen in the mainstream market as well.
TFT from wiki :
Thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) is a variant of liquid crystal display (LCD) which uses thin-film transistor (TFT) technology to improve image quality (e.g., addressability, contrast). TFT LCD is one type of Active matrix LCD, though all LCD-screens are based on TFT active matrix addressing. TFT LCDs are used in television sets, computer monitors, mobile phones, handheld video game systems, personal digital assistants, navigation systems, projectors, etc.
According to the Engadgit review--the only one to have a standardized run-down test--the NT's battery life is indeed significantly better than the KF, despite a smaller battery:
Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet - 8:20
Amazon Kindle Fire - 7:42
I'm revising my opinion to say that it's likely due to NT's better hardware design (improved from the old NC), even with x2 RAM and x2 flash storage.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/21/barnes-and-noble-nook-tablet-review/#continued
I've been hammering away on my NT all day and still have over 85% battery life. This thing lasts a long time, but so did the battery on the NC.
I would be willing to say that most of the perceived battery life difference is due to differences in the display hardware.
Everything else is just too close, hardware-wise. Ram takes nothing compared to the display.

New Problem? / short review.

OK so I will start off with the problem and since I am making this thread I will add some info about my tablet as well including WiFi numbers.
I have had my prime for 2.5 days now and I took it out of the dock today to play some games and I noticed this......

If you look at the edge of the screen you can clearly see that the aluminum has bent from opening the dock I presume. I am super careful with my electronics so it isn't from abuse I also made sure it was locked when I docked it. It wasn't like that when I got it because I remember the post where that piece was broken on one of the latch points so I checked the bottom out thoroughly.
This concerns me as it seems to be quite a bit of strain there and what if it actually breaks, and what about the strain on the connector inside for longevity's sake!
Now on to the rest of my tablet.
It has the usual GPS issue I haven't tried it outside but even next to a window it sees no satellites. the internal vibrator works when I turn it on (long vibrate) but when touching buttons it does the click (on short vibrates) I can kind of get it to act normal if I repeatedly touch a button. Maybe because the vibrator is sort of moving still???
I haven't tried Bluetooth yet but I probably wont ever use Bluetooth on it I might get around to trying that yet.
Light bleed is almost no existent, there are 2 tiny spots on the right on the screen but nothing to cry over especially living with my amaze (the button on the bottom cause horrific light bleed)
It also seems than on the screens in setting where there is supposed to be black to gray gradients there are groups of lines with pink or green hues it is quite annoying I took a screen shop and it shows up fine on my PC
WiFi seems to work well here are my findings I tested all my devices in my room where my PC is as well as in my living room both roughly 20 feet from router, both through 2 wall and in opposite directions from my router.
Averages over 3 tests each.
Bedroom
PC 25ms 14 Mbps Down 0.45 Mbps up
HTC Amaze 42ms 9.5 Mbps Down 0.6 Mbps up
Laptop 28ms 15 Mbps Down 0.4 Mbps up
Prime 45ms 12Mbps Down 0.6 Mbps up
Living room
Amaze 40ms 12 Mbps Down 0.47 Mbps up
Laptop 30ms 16 Mbps Down 0.42 Mbps up
Prime 38ms 14 Mbps Down 0.64 Mbps up
Are you sure you had the latches set to lock when you had it in the dock? I do see where its bent. Excessive pressure was put the center. does the other 2 hole look bent any also?
A while ago I bought and exchanged a couple Microsoft ZuneHDs because they had this defect on the charging port (it looked identical to your pic).

I have had mine in and out of my dock probably 50 times or more and mine looks nothing like the picture.
I have put mine in and out of a dock for the biggest part of the 2 days I have it, and its slightly malformed, not that much as yours.
I dont see it getting worse on mine though.

+1 Mine is in and out of the dock all day long. Open and closed many times in a day moving from meeting to meeting and back to my office where I put it on a tablet stand next to my laptop screen out of the dock. While I am careful with my gear, I have always just opened and closed it like I would a laptop or netbook. My shows no deformation whatsoever. I just took it out to check and looks like the day I received it. Sorry to hear this on your prime!

Got mine back from RMA today...

So far so good. I actually turned on my bluetooth radio and my wifi speeds were the same. First time I've seen this happen on multiple tablets. I also switched from the gray to the other color champagne. I actually like this lighter color better, but it will be in a case anyway. So far so good. No bleed, no dead pixels. I don't care about the GPS, but I ran that GPS test software anyway. Inside I connected to 8 birds in about 10 seconds or less. That is also something I never had. By the way, this is a C2 serial. The only thing I was told by Asus was this tablet was specifically tested and used prior to me getting it. I can tell it was, a couple small finger prints and a charged battery. So far so good, I hope it lasts!

Do you have a bluetooth speaker, or something to pair it to and transfer data while trying your speedtests?
Mine will be going in for this in the near future and I want to know that it does actually work on some units.
I can turn on bluetooth, and even pair it without really any change in wifi performance. As soon as you transmit to a speaker though it plummets to 400k or less.
Thats awesome. Got mine back last Friday still cant use wifi and bloothooth together and no GPS. C10 was shipped.
Got my tested one back from them and it had major dust and dead pixels from them... They didn't remove that plastic cover when they tested...
Gps worked good indoors on par with my EVO 3d
WiFi was decent
I don't use Bluetooth
But I am returning for a refund both tablet and dock to asus gonna get me a snapdragon tablet instead or maybe a ps vita idk yet maybe just an ultrabook
To much to choose from....
Idk if a tablet is really needed for me... A new phone would do it... Sprint needs to hurry up and release something!

I sent them a nasty email complaining about the "waiting to Repair" status and in 3 hours they had a new serial number ready to ship...should be here tomorrow, within 48 hours of my email being sent, so complaining seems to motivate them.
I had a BCOK but they are sending me a C2O, hopefully it works well.

My C10K Grey - so far so good

I was going to wait for TF700 but not really sure how long is the wait.
SO..
Just received my Prime from Bestbuy.ca on Friday
Updated to .14
Prime not rooted yet.
Light bleed yes.. minor only.. visible on boot. But on normal use of the tablet and watching movie not noticeable.
Wifi Range is good. Even from 10 feet no issue. I still have the linksys WRT54G router. I can afford a Prime but not upgrade to a Router N. lol
GPS is good. The test screenshot is from outdoor. Sorry I don't test indoor and Outside GPS makes sense than indoor GPS. Why would I want to use GPS inside my house or in a building. Anywho i got the tablet not for GPS purpose. I just ran the test just for show.
Tether is good. Cell phone Tether via wifi is good. Cell Phone Bluetooth Wifi is good. Yes also watching streamed videos on tether. Only lag if I use forward and rewind. Pause is ok it resumes fine. Tether is using Iphone via wireless or Bluetooth.
VPN connection and 2X is good. I use a lot for work.
Email exchange is good. Synch fine.
Watching movie is good and Music. Impressed on the speakers.
I will try Netflix soon.
Polaris Office its ok.
Google Talk works well.
NOW:
I just need a good case. There are some good case in Amazon but they do not ship to Canada.
Thinking about Ghost Armor - but to heavy for my wallet to expense.
After all good things came out of this Prime. I'm thinking I'll keep it (But I still have 27days to return it).
I'm thinking if I should get the keyboard dock.
I might just MOD another Brand's Dock for Prime.

Congrats on the new purchase! Personally I would highly recommend the keyboard dock, particularly if you will be using it for work stuff. I totally replaced my laptop with the Prime and things like remote desktop use is far better with the dock. Not to even mention the extra battery, expansion.

Great I'm glad you're enjoying your Prime but 10 ft is not an appropriate test for WiFi performance. ?he reason why I say this is because if you intend on using the Prime on the go, you may experience the same disappointments some of us are including the Prime's inability to see public networks within 25+ ft radius or very poor reception/speeds overall.
Play with a bit more in different scenarios and let us know.

I actually tested the Wifi when I was outside the McDo parking lot.
I don't know how far that is because I'm not really sure where the router is located in McDo.
But 2 stores away is Starbucks.. It shows up in the Wifi as open connection with 1 bar.
I switched to that SB Network (still in McDo parking lot). After connecting to Starbucks connection drops and i'm back to McDo network again.
What I did not do is Forget McDo network and connect only to SB. I will try it again if the kids wants to go to McDo. lol
Yes. I do use the Prime on the go. But when I need to be connected on-line. I can either connect to open Wifi that's on range/available. If not in range.. I will use my iPhone to tether. Which I have no issue using tether with a smartphone and RDP to my work pc.

Does anyone else get these 18500Khz audio spikes on their v60?

Hi guys,
Using an audio analyzer you can always see but obviously not hear these proportionately spaced audio spikes coming from the V60. It can also be measured using another device by bringing it closer to the V60. I'm attaching a couple of screenshots that show what I mean.
I've read that the second screen is wireless and about wireless payment or charging functions that could be playing a part in this.. I'm really not sure so I decided to ask if anyone else sees the same thing. It's the first time I've encountered this on any device so I'm pretty curious.

This is the V60 internal mic picking it up. Default Android output/input (48000hz 24bit, I assume). I just open any free RTA analyzer (with good enough resolution) , and it picks it up. It's always on when the screen is on. it can be seen and measured with any device able to pick up above 18Khz (I used another iphone 7 with the built in mic). When the screen goes of it's gone, when only the fingerprint scanner is visible on the V60, theres only one spike visible around 18500hz. When the whole screen is on, I can see a mountain of spikes around 18500hz, evenly spaced. My guesses are it's either connected to the fingerprint scanner, wireless second display, wireless pay or charge functions. My LG V60 is the only device I've witnessed this with and Ive only measured this one device so I'm not sure if there's something wrong with mine or all V60s behave this way. Either way its interesting . The app in the photos is Sound Spectrum Pro, I like it because it has extremely wide resolution and you can zoom in on any frequency range.
Try disabling the fingerprint scanner...
I just disabled the fingerprint scanner and it's still showing. I made a video and I'll try attaching it here.

Maybe from the power regulation? External interference? There's no negative portion to that wave pattern.

External interference can be pretty much ruled out at this point. I noticed the missing negative half. The evenly spaced spikes do shift in frequency once in a while but not very much, still in the 18600 18700hz range, than slowly shift back to just above 18500hz. They always stay evenly spaced, they maintain the same distance from each other. They are over 20db in amplitude and if I really zoom in, the tips seem so narrow that it doesn't look like just an analog signal.
It would really help to see if anyone else can turn on RTA audio analyzer on their V60 and find out if they see the same thing.

Hi I just noticed that when I attach the second screen on the v60 theres another spike that appears immediately preceding the others and goes away when the second screen is off. Perhaps this is where at least some of the spikes relate to. Still very curious

Poor circuit isolation.
Whatever the cause(s) with a stereo signal in open air listening area those spikes will be audible when those sound waves interact with the other audio frequencies to produce secondary waves in the audible range.
With sealed systems like headsets, buds etc few can hear them directly, but some can especially younger females.
Interesting things do happen when I bring it next to a plugged in guitar pickup. Even with airplane mode on, no wifi and screen closed. I guess I was hoping for it to be intentional rather than not.
