need help picking a phone out of a bunch - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

in last 2 years i owned bold 9700, HD2 and now sensation.
unfortunately while trying to clean dust out of the screen i damaged it it was already dropped and leaking on the corner and i separated it even more.
i havent been up to date on cell phones for last year or so
and asking your advice because i do not want to make same mistake like buying this stupid sensation phone with its issues
(camera red color and dust under screen etc)
can anyone that knows more than me about the following phones give me a quick list of major defects that i should look for ?
im planning to get the new phone this saturday and dont have any time to do research since im pretty busy at work..
here are the phones from tmobile that i was eyeballing today.
1 htc amaze how well is it built looked a bit heavy
2 tmo G2X
3 samsung exhibit 2
4 samsung galaxy s2 screen is big but resolution is not so big
can someone post pictures from following phones also? unless theres a thread with pictures i want to see quality the camera on those.

I experienced the "dust under the screen" issue with the MT4G, which I loved, but the dust made me exchange the phone 5 times
I can tell you Samsung phones don't have that problem because they fuse the screen so nothing can get it.. a HUGE plus to me
The T-Mobile Galaxy S2 had been the best phone I have ever owned by far.. and the screen outclasses anything on the market IMO.. I've held my phone next to the iPhone 4S, both playing Cut the Rope, and it almost made my friend throw his phone because he was sure the iPhone had the best screen.. it wasn't even close, the colors, the blacks, everything was so much cleaner on the S2
You will hear complaints about every phone out there, including the S2, but I promise you won't be disappointed, I wouldn't trade this phone for the new Nexus, iPhone, nada
Galaxy S2 all the way.

Have you considered the Samsung Galaxy Note? I just got it one month ago - and I just think its a unique device - works really well as a phone and a tablet, which many people doubted, s pen with s memo allows me to scribble when I am feeling creative/have ideas which are not meant just for typing etc. I do hope they bring ICS to it, which is optimized and not slowed down. You could consider this as well. I know people have S2 and are happy with it, but somehow I thought Note would make the owner feel extra special Hope this helps?

would be nice but its not available through T-mobile.

No offence m8 but you really need to go and put some effort into this one yourself. Its kind of silly to ask people who you don't know and who don't know you to decide which phone is right for you.
You need to go google this sh*t.
get a list of the phones spec.
find 2-3 review of each one and read it all.
then once you have an idea of the difference.
Cross ref what you've found out with whats
1:Essential
2:important
3:Favoured
4:a bonus feature
Than it will become very clear which one is best for you.
Asking on a forum is just plain lazy, and likely to leave you open to other peoples all too common 'mine rewls' mentality, you need to answer this one yourself m8.

no offence m8 but i didnt have time to do any of that, usually i do research but i found out about the sale a day before it so thanks for advice broski.
i listed the phones i was interested in and thats about how much time i had is to check the specs on the phones available through tmobile. other than that i didnt have time to go around forums and dig through 1000s of BS useless posts to try to locate the defects and shortcomings of every phone...
but unfortunately i ended up not upgrading anyting cuz its not worth it.

Whaaaa? Its always a good time to upgrade :]

the recent tmobile "promotion" was a big fail.
i went to the store and was told that there will be no change in my plan. and i get a the money back once i send the rebate.
to find out that i still have to pay full price for the phone over 20 month period...
that is not a damn promotion its a trick..
why the hell would anyone do that.
you get stuck with this company for 2 years AND you still have to pay full price on the phone.
i can walk in any day and buy that phone with my credit card instead and make payments on it and not have to be binded by 2 year contract...

lol .......... if you'd actually bothered to try it you'd have found everything in a couple of hours max!!!
Whats better spending some time solving your own procurement issues. After all you know what you need want and desire better than anyone else.
OR
Begging the opinions of other people who don't know you, and whos soundness of advice you have no idea about on a website.
Methinks your method indicates how committed to the venture you where, the outcome speaks volumes

cool thanks lol one person actually tried to help.
what did you not understand i didnt have time to do any research past what little searching i did...

ROFLOL ......... yeah but you had plenty of time to wait 5 days whilst you expected others to do your legwork for you
Don't wanna make this personal but your just not getting it
"One person helped"?? No m8 one person tossed you a bone ...... since you where begging, probably just bigging up whatever he owns. Everyone else's response (lack of, should tell you a lot about attitudes to posts like this. Where OP clearly states "I can't be arsed doing what i'd like you chumps to do for me".
Best advice you got was from me, your best at deciding what you need not someone else. Amazes me anyone is so lazy that they would rather take dubious advice from a forum than spend 2-3 hours educating themselves.
How old are you ......... seriously you a teen ???

Galaxy s 2 is good screen is great and lots of roms for it.

ROFLOL BRAH. because sale is over... dont need your help stop helping...
i was hoping that someone could throw some details about the phones i listed, you cant read good can you?.
your advice was not worth any more than a piece of doog poop on a sidewalk.
now that i had more time i did some more research and know more about the phones. but you obviously do not get it. and just have to have the last word even if its not relaed to the topic...
u know if soemone needs help quick i give them an answer and then we figure out if he was lazy or not...
i hope your car breaks down and you go and ask on some automotive forums for help and get same responce as you gave me "its your car you should know whats best for it BRAH!!!"
but maybe you still dont get it..
i found out about the sale a day before the sale. you follow?
i work all day.. still with me?
i was busy in teh evening and couldnt do much research. still there?
next day i was working as well and didnt have time to sit research on teh internets instead of working. after work i went to the tmobile store...
i asked if someone could give me a quick rundown of the common problems of the phones i listed... nothing more.
because i dont know how much clearer i can state my question.
"can anyone that knows more than me about the following phones give me a quick list of major defects "
anyway this thread can be deleted since it turned into useless thread.

Well thats what happens when you post a useless question.

Anyone feel like the S2 will not be as unique anymore in months to come?

Hey guys. Just wondering if anyone feels sort of the same way as me.
I spent around $650 USD and waited 3 months (from when the official international UK version was released) to purchase the S2 from overseas. Now the phone is going to become released in the U.S.
A part of me feels sort of disappointed and excited, yet I should be very happy now that it is available here (finally!!!). I guess I just wanted a phone where it wasn't too popular in the states. A part of spending a large amount of money (with no binding contract to a carrier) gave me a sense of uniqueness in that I was "one of few" to actually have this phone. Also, the forums here are quite valuable with so many users that I feel like I am part of a special S2 community...but with the announcement of this phone in the U.S., it seems like everyone "else" (yes, all the "other" people... you name it, they've got it) would eventually have it. I guess you can't help but wonder how special your phone is, heh.
I suppose I like to have electronic devices that is rare. Thus, when someone sees you off the street holding a S2, their impression would be like "Woah. That is cool. What is that?" But I guess in a few months, people would be more like "Is that the S2? Here's mine, too. And all my friends have it!"
Anyone feel the same way, heh?
Cool story bro.
Sent from my Kyocera Echo.
Not much in a way, people still keep thinking it's an iPhone which makes me giggle lol. You still have the uniqueness factor since the phone looks physically different from the variants.
I'm pretty much like that too, I usually had the odd phone that nobody even knew the name. I always tell my friends about how iPhone is like a DVD player, everyone has one and knows how to operate it and I was thinking in the same line about the SGS2 since you can buy it off the cell company. This wasn't like that last year, you couldn't even find any android phones, we have a huge blackberry market and quickly diving. But the SGS2 is an android phone, that means you can have any UI, on iPhone you have iOS and works the way apple wants it to work and that's it, with the SGS2 it'll be different, you have TouchWiz as a default interface, and you can also have ADW, LauncherPro etc, you can even have MIUI on it, then it comes the millions of roms that we have and will have more coming as soon as SGS2 starts selling in the US. Now think about the people that are square headed that don't even know what ROOT is and don't even care about it, if they try to use your phone and you don't have TouchWiz it will be like a windows fan using linux, he/she will know is the same phone but won't be able to use it as easy as theirs. And you have widgets and all the customization on the different launchers.
I know what you're going tru lol
So to sum up, you chose a phone because you wanted to stroke your own ego with your "sense of uniqueness" and impress your "friends", and are now disappointed because other people will spoil your unique user experience by having the temerity to get a similar device.
Poor little thing. Just wait until the next Shiny New Thing, buy it, bask in your own smugness and find another forum to tell people how special you are.
I spent 750 with first original stock and it was worth every penny. The only thing that got my attention is the Samsung Note.
This device will easily last 2 years for the casual person and another 6-12 months with the tech geek.
Last I read over 3 million GS2 had been sold in Europe alone so I can imagine at least a couple hundred thousand were sold in USA despite not being on general sale there that's not to say people didn't buy them online and not taking into account the many more sold throughout the rest of the world so hardly a unique phone for the privileged few this phone has been Samsung's biggest selling handset to date and with good reason!
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Of course the phone will become more popular as it gets released in more places. That's progress. Accept it.
Samsung have a winning phone on their hands; they'd be utterly stupid to not try selling it in every country in the world.
If you want something new, go and buy the Samsung Galaxy S 3 whenever it's released. (but accept that other people are going to buy it too)
SII already achieved a great level of admiration as after 3 months of release it's still the most wanted and popular phone people wanna hold. I believe it will have a record sales figure worldwide.
But OP- Poor thinking, shame on you.

Took the words out of my mouth.
But hey, it's suckers like OP that I find easy to make money from.
I know how you feel. Its just a nice experience when you own a device that others have never even seen. I owned a Microsoft zune a few years back which wasn't released here in the uk. When I showed it to iPod user's they just said "wow is that a new iPod?" Although the galaxy s2 is wildly available in the UK there are still alot of people that don't know what they are, especially iPhone users. I've already been asked if it was an iphone5. I replied no its much better than one of those old iPhones. I'm then quickly followed by a confused look and a sharp reply of "iPhones are the best though aren't they?" So funny.

With all do respect, I absolutely love this phone. I just felt as with an increased presence in the States, it could potentially turn to something along the lines of an iPhone, whereby almost every user wants/or already has it. It's one of the things I dislike about Apple products is because of the all-too familiarity around here. Pretty much everywhere I go, I would see someone carrying an iPhone. Makes you feel slightly less exclusive. However, if it's a good product, then obviously everyone is going to get it.

I thought that individualism was one of the central tenets of American culture.
I don't see how it's a bad thing if the SGSII (or any other Android phone for that matter) becomes more popular. A larger install base means the platform is more attractive for app developers, and it's the quality and quantity of these quality apps that make or break a platform. This is just my opinion, but I feel that in this area, Android still has to catch up with iOS. I can't help but feel that I had access to a greater variety of good apps when I was on my iPhone 3GS.

I think there is only one option left for you and it ain't a good one.
To be unique, buy a phone that doesn't sell well, meaning an ugly underpowered , crashing and medicore phone. Thats how you will be unique.
Thats the price you pay for wanting a top selling and great phone. In the end everybody wants a phone that is on top of the line.
Learn to live with it that you are not alone when you buy these phones.
When i see around me people with GS II then i know i probably made a good decision.
If i bought a phone that nobody has then its rubbish or insane expensive.

True. Good point.
Hopefully, Samsung continues to make great quality products. IMHO, I'll take quality over quantity (or massive production of inferior products in order to just reach a certain quota) any day of the week.
You could look at it a different way...
Think about this, for a start not everyone will get or be in the position to get an S2. Instead of 'oh that's cool what is it' you might get people saying hey an S2 they are great aren't they? I have one and just put the latest xxx rom on it, have you tried it, take a look A full on conversation going about how good the phone is, while others around wonder why they don't have one of these phones.
I already have (here in Belfast Northern Ireland) been talking to a complete stranger and quickly set his phone up a bit better for him on the spot! He thanked me and said he is very new to android. I showed him my setup and he was impressed so I pointed him in the direction of xda.
So if you like it might not be such a unique club soon, but it will still be a chosen few only with a few more friendly members, don't you think?

Galaxy S2 A Victim Of Its Own Popularity?

Is it just me or is the Galaxy S2 a victim of its own popularity in the fact that it has so many moaners? I'm completely satisfied with my White GS2, autobrightness is a bit poor but that's not a big deal to me. I've owned a few Android phones,
HTC Tattoo.
HTC Desire.
ZTE Blade.
Motorola Defy.
HTC HD2 (with Android obviously)
Sony X10i.
This phone has been my best experience with an Android phone so far. I used to be a fan of Sense but i feel Touchwiz is BETTER! I think the main problem is the happy users (The majority!) don't feel the need to speak up about it whereas many unhappy users want to make their voice heard. There are people actually saying they HATE this phone on these forums...if that is the case why are they hanging around? Sell the phone and leave the forums
I guess when a device sells as well as the GS2 you do end up with a lot of users who bought the phone simply because it's the most popular currently and they haven't done their research prior to buying or upgrading.
That, and the age-old problem that people very very rarely make the effort just to say "My [insert item here] is awesome, that is all." They more often use the effort to moan.
I bloody love my SGS2, best phone I've ever had. Makes everything else look like a poor cousin, even to the point that I don't feel the need to root at the moment - I had to root my Desire not long after I had it to love it this much!
I had the (mis?)fortune to get a play around with an IPhone 4S the other day, and the SGS2 feels so far ahead it's not even funny anymore.
I had to root my Desire for one simple reason. More space for apps. A2SD!

I think its also wanting to feel part of something (ie this forum/community)....so by posting threads it validates their time on this forum...pretty sad really
I think phones like this should come with a rating of some kind like movies do....
agreed with all the above, the phone is by far and away the best I've owned, had a x10i before which was good, arc and arc s didn't inspire me, Galaxy s2 blown me away to the point I don't really want to root/flash unless there is any real advantage to do it.....as asked in another post, looks like it's worth a flash to the latest stock rom which is what I'll do, at least I know I'll get the updates from sammy direct when released without having to wait for 02
Darkside i love that rating comment but what i love even more is your signature. That comment is pure gold.
kp it is definitely worth flashing an up to date stock rom without a doubt. Carrier updates are a joke for all devices.

Sorry for the OT....
The way I see it there are 3 groups of people
1 - Those who have a faulty handset myself being 1 of them with WiFi issues, poor battery, low volume to name but a few.
2 - Those who don't have a faulty handset
3 - The fanboys who even if it was faulty they would never admit it.
Well those in group 1 need to return and get a replacement or a different phone. Those in group 3 need to wake up.
And let me add,
4. Those who really aren't that bright or lead a very pessimistic life
Is this a "Brit" only forum?
Just kidding, You guys are on target. The phone stock is GREAT and if you have a bug or two, well rooting and a few choice apps can make your phone even more awsum. Just taking the time to say that my Epic touch is GREAT!!!!

Agree - I love this phone and the android community, but there are quite a few whining idiots around.
That said, we're still wayyyyyyyyyy better off than the iPhone 4S crowd. Lots of morons complaining there, and worse, they can't even do anything about it. iOS doesn't allow half the tweaks and hacks Android lets us do, especially if not jailbroken

The Galaxy Note exudes a coolness factor/Samsung did an awesome job advertising this

Almost every instance on using this phone in public, people either stop and stare or they ask questions. It isn't like I'm trying to bring attention to myself but everyone is always asking if that is the new note. I leave it on my desk at work and whenever people come into my office, I'm asked about it and they want to doodle with the stylus. I hope this interest turns into more sales so that Samsung is prompted to come out with more phones in this line in the future. I simply refuse to go to any other phone now.
If you watched any basketball this weekend, the commercials were constant. They certainly seem to expect good sales:

If you seek attention, I'm sure you will find it.
Seems as if you either walk around waving this phone in the air or you are doing something to draw attention to yourself.

I get a kick out of these type of threads. I used to read them on the iPhone forums and laugh, but it seems the same type of people are here as well.
Probably a bit of an underage issue a well.

Your comment seems quite underage. Just because some people have strangers asking them about devices and you don't doesn't mean they are lying or looking for attention.
Really only a few devices in the recent past, such as the Droid RAZR, have received as much media attention and advertising as the Note, so all of your latest tablets and phones have likely not drawn the same attention from the general public. Therefore you cannot compare them to the Note.
I do not show off my phones, I use them. With my Captivate, I received no comments from strangers. With my Infuse, I had a couple, but only from people familiar with Android that were curious what brand and model it was. With the Note, same use and everything, I have received more comments and attention than the whole time I had both of my previous phone, in just two weeks. Dude in line at Chipotle, girl employee at Home Depot, several people I have never talked to in my classes here at college. This phone is turning heads whether you are looking for attention or not, so don't be a downer because nobody finds you approachable.

i don't know about the Advertising
but after using it hands on for a few days I'm addicted, it's so hard to get back to my T989
I get a lot of looks, and some comments. mostly "is that a phone???", "is that the one with a pen?", or "Is that the Super Bowl phone?" (referring the commercials played at the Super Bowl).
I have a gold metallic case on it so most of the time it looks like I am carrying a huge gold bar. Funny the looks I get.
I get asked about it all the time. I'll just be sitting on the train or at the bar or something and I guarantee someone will ask about it.

It's definitely not the advertising. It's the fact that it's a larger phone. I used a Dell Streak for 1.5 years and got the same type of comments about it.

Not worth the time to comment but I will anyway. I use my phone for business, not playing games. I don't "play" with it while waiting in a food line, nor do I walk around with it like it is a trophy. Many here do. That is obvious. As far as being "approachable", I am not looking for strangers to come up to me and ask about my phone, and I certainly don't want them "touching" it. The reason I even responded to this post was because the OP stated that the Note exuded a "coolness' factor. That certainly tells me how old he or she is.
We all grow up someday. Some of us a bit later I guess.
Give it time.

I also use my phone for business, not playing games. The only time games get played on my Note is when I let one of my grandchildren use it to keep them occupied. Nor do I walk around with it like it is a trophy as you put it. That being said, I still think it has a 'coolness' factor and yes, I have been asked about it in public. I spend a great deal of time on the phone when out - isn't that kind of the point to have a cell? If I didn't want to talk on the phone outside the office, I wouldn't carry it. I really do not mind people asking about it.
phone is awesome and everyone knows it.

You sure know how to wash down a party. I am a network admin for a defense contractor, so it is needed for work, and I do not just go waving it around looking for attention. If I want attention, I talk to my wife.
Glad your so boring.

The lame response by lindenhurst has inspired me to share.
Story#1 (2 weeks ago)
I attended my wife's induction into the honor society for her university yesterday afternoon. There were 16 inductees and we all socialized a bit before the ceremony began. I was to pin my wife so I quickly made nice with the couple that sat next to us and asked if they would mind tag teaming on getting pics of the pinning action. All was set. If you could have seen the look on the face of the guy (and others around us). When I pulled out my Note... He said "what is that!?!? ". Of course, I took the opportunity to demonstrate the wonders of the Note to him as his amazement grew. After he got a chance to handle it and snap a few pics of us during our part of the ceremony he was hooked. His wife looked at me and said "I guess he's found a new toy now.. I can see it in his eyes".. I just laughed and went about my business. He had an iPhone.
Story#2 (last week)
So I venture into my local Best Buy to return an item. As I am standing at the return counter waiting for the guy to process my return, I am typing away in facebook and fully engaged on my Note. The young girl behind the counter next to him said "Wow. Is that the Note? I want to get one so badly. My mom won't let me but I am going to figure out a way to get one. I love that phone." I then let her hold it because she was so starstruck with it.. Really... I laughed inside.

[Q] For T-Mobile Reps here

If this question has been answered, please point me in the proper direction.
Say i wasn't liking the Amaze anymore and wanted to have it warranty exchanged. what other phones are available that would be given to me if i wanted to exchange it? What would i have to tell the CSR over the phone so that they'd be willing to give me a different device?
Reason: I'm sick of the lack of support HTC is giving to devs here. and i dont like that whole "can't charge to 100 percent and stay on the charger" nonsense.
So Tmobile representatives, can you help me out?

Im not a t-mobile rep but ill throw in my 2 cents. I "used" to be a sprint rep, so when i call t-mobile, i try to say any of the things i know usually works. My family has been with t-mobile for about 17 years. They tend to give me better deal..not always. I recommend saying the word dissatisfied a few times. I also was ready to trade in my Amaze, only because i wanted to try out the nexus and i was to chicken sh*t to root any of my phones. Hasoons Tool and the easy as pie instructions in the dev forum changed my mind. They offered me crap phones, would only exchange amaze for amaze or something that was atleast 1 generation older. They said after they have replaced my Amaze 3 total times, might they consider trading it for something that is equivalent or nicer. One S basically. If you fail on the first call, call again. There is always a rep willing to do anything to get u off the phone, be it they are anxious or dont know what your doing so they tell u YES we can do it. Be polite but constant pressure. Good Luck.
I agree with death4u, I always say that I'm just not happy and stay calm. Honestly, that phrase has worked a lot. You just don't put the blame on them, especially the person you're talking to, and tell them you're not happy. I even asked them how they can make me happy, haha. That's how I got the amaze from the mt4g for free after having the mt4g for only a year. She apologized to me a bunch and offered me any phone they had.
I've been debating calling in to get a replacement, but I don't like any of their phones. I'm kinda bummed by the lack of drivers from HTC but mostly the headphone jack is crap for me. I can't put my phone in my pants pocket or workout with it without the headphones coming unplugged...it's getting old.

Thanks for the quick answers. I am definitely always polite when calling, im just curious.
Hoping to get a current tmobile rep in here to help me out to give me their POV
You can do multiple exchanges. They'll just offer you a Sensation or a Galaxy Blaze 4G

I completely agree with Hasoon. I go on to the Tmo Amaze forum many times daily and can tell you now that only one person has reported getting a SGS3 in an exchange. All others have been given refurbished Amazes (many times getting another phone with the exact same problem.) Only after several Amaze exchanges do they offer the customer the Sensation. I guess the bright side is that it was reported that the Sensation was taken off the EOL list.
So the SGSII is no longer an option? Cause i would take that.

The S2 may be an option...I'm not sure. Haven't read any post saying that is what they got. Based on what I have read....I guess that depends on your gift of gab. One person got them to give him an S3 all other the Sensation. I can only say that it is very difficult to get another phone in general. There are others that are taking their fight to the BBB and FCC.

I haven't gone that route. I would find it hard to to accept an inferior phone. The Amaze is an awesome phone under the hood. My only problems are the 8-10 Bluetooth range (that I get.) And sound quality when video recording in a semi-loud environment. (Recording a live band is terrible.) I have been hoping that another OTA would address the problems. The BT problem got much better with the ICS update. Before ICS, my BT range was 1-2 Ft. So it's hard for me to just believe that the problem is the hardware. The problem appears to be larger than Tmo and HTC want to admit...but not large enough to care about.
Thanks again for the reply. And this reeks of the same problem the Sidekick 4g had...both samsung and tmobile were damn well aware of the awful software problems with that phone, but didnt care to do anything.

My daughter has the Sidekick and she told me she has to do a battery pull at least once a day if not more... problem is she cracked the screen so we can't do a warranty exchange
They gave me a brand new HTC one s after getting 4 warranty replacements. I'm glad I got rid of this phone. Too many problems :/.

Oh man, thats a **** ton of replacements. And how long did it take to do that?
And to the one with the daughter with the sk4g...yes, battery pulls were WAY too common with that device. Just too much going on for a device that was uniquely put together, such as the jump button.
Big pain in the ass, really.

So how did it go if you don't mind me asking? I was thinking about doing the exact same thing. I don't think multiple exchanges really matter, I got the amaze from my first warranty exchange from the Sensation, i simply asked what alternate options there were cause I heard people were receiving Amazes as an option.

to be honest i haven't done it yet. my little sister is using it now, since she needed a phone.
she likes the SII better though...thinner and lighter for her. you know how girls can be! so i may still call, its a matter of whether or not she's willing to sort of stick it out with this phone or not.

[Q] HELP - child wiped out phone (brick?) and mom needs help...

hi everyone! I am seeking your expertise as I came upon this forum trying to help my son fix his phone. He's only 11 years old- but as we call him at home our "tech guy". He got a brand new HTC One M8 yesterday and 3 hours later - the phone was "bricked" as I have been told. Apparently, (these are his words) he "unlocked the bootloader using HTCdev, then flashed twrp, then flashed supersu.zip.
I have no idea what any of that means but apparently he did something wrong because his phone is not working and we don't know how to fix it. If you have any compassion for a frustrated Mom who's trying not to be angry with her son -- I would appreciate any advice you can give on how to fix this.
I have attached a picture of what the phone looks like when we turn it on. Not sure how to get picture in post.
Thanks a bunch!!

I'm going to venture to guess that the process will be entirely too long and tedious for someone not well versed to follow and could potential end in disaster. The phone isn't bricked since the main recovery menu pops up. I'd suggest looking on craigslist for someone locally to help you guys out. Unless someone here can offer a quick fix, i'd much rather you find someone that has experience to fix this in person. Sorry if that's not the answer you were looking for but that would probably be your best bet

UPDATE
Thank you for your responses! Much appreciated. Believe it or not - this kid fixed it all by himself. Basically (remember I am not technical) he unlocked the boot loader then flashed a ROM onto an SD card and was able to load. Don't think I worded correctly - but it's fixed and working fine. WHEW!!
I will certainly keep the info to this forum handy because something tells me that I will be visiting again with this child..................
Have a great evening!!
p.s. I typed the wrong key -- he's 12 not 11

I started getting into ROMs your sons age. I am 15 now. I have hard bricked a Motorola Atrix 2, meaning it won't turn on at all. That's cool your son is a tech wizard too, it will do him a lot of good and a lot of bad. You should educate him about Ubuntu and let him screw with that on a PC. Much safer messing with a computer than a phone. Anyways, glad he got it working. ?

Me too! Im 14 now.
The M8 is my first android phone and custom roms seem to get better and better.
The phone was not "bricked", and you are using the term improperly. Your son simply did something to make the phone unable to boot into the Android operating system. This state is usually easy to recover from, as long as the proper steps are known. So that is not a brick.
Itis of course your choice whether to let your kid modify (mod) your phone in such ways. And part of the modding process is always going to involve some hiccups (for even the most experienced users) and figuring out how to fix them. So I'm glad your son figured it out.
On the other hand, both you and he should be fully aware (if not already) that modding the phone may void the warranty, and also permanent damage (a true "brick") is possible if he doesn't fully understand what he is doing. Such damage is not covered by warranty.
To the OP (original poster), please do not create multiple thread asking the same question.
Its against forum rules, and makes it super confusing for those trying to help you.

You got your 11-year-old a $700 smartphone. What did you think would happen? Why in the world does a kid that young even need a smartphone?

I agree about his technical skills being alot of good and bad! We've had our share with him-- I won't bore you with the lists. My husband is the tech guy (of course he was away on business when this happened) and he understands his quest for knowledge and how much he loves this stuff - -says it's how he learns. Hubby has given him some old laptops and ipods and he sure has fun with those!

Oh, I'm sorry. Are you counting the on contract price? Okay. Well, throw it on the ground or drop it in a pool or give it to a child to ruin. Now go back to the store to get a replacement and see how much it costs. You also signed a contract and took on an extra monthly data plan... For a child. The fact that you have no clue how much the phone actually costs explains a lot, actually.
I'm not concerned about your wallet. You clearly have more money than sense, so rather than crying here, just go buy a replacement phone for him to ruin. While you're at it, go ahead and get him an espresso machine.

Seems like she asked a question to a problem and it was answered. I'm not sure how taking a personal shot at a newcomer to the forum accomplishes anything. Her decision to buy her son anything is hers and hers alone, why inject your opinion into it, much less insinuate that she has no sense. It comes off as aloof and petty. This doesn't seem to be in the spirit of this forum. Flame away.

Thanks a bunch for your support and from all of those who responded. I've visited various forums in my life and am well aware that there are always those few who just like to be mean and find power on these boards. I didn't come here asking for anyone's opinion on what I allow my children to do or how they spend their allowance - just needed some advice. Sincerely appreciate the great input that I have received.

The actual retail cost of the device is $639; which would also be the replacement cost of this device. The on-contract price of $199 is just a subsidized cost, which the carrier basically spreads over the length of your 2-year contract.
