[Q] Download Mode Not Recognized By PC - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well my good friend just bricked his Fascinate trying to go to the newest glitch kernel for ICS. It has been handed to me for fixing like many times before . This time though i don't think i can quite fix it. So the phone will automatically boot into ICS Recovery(5.5.0.4).
Here is what I have tried thus far from Recovery:
Wipe Cache Partition(Check)
Wipe Dalvik Cache(Check)
Wipe Data Factory Reset(Check)
This yields no results the phone just boots back into recovery. With that in mind I have/had tried this:
Wipe Cache Partition(Check)
Wipe Dalvik Cache(Check)
Wipe Data Factory Reset(Check)
Install teamhacksung_fascinatemtd-ota-eng.BUILD6.1
This too yields NO results. The phone again boots back into recovery. Actually it didn't boot straight into recovery I had to play with it for a bit.So the logical thing to do from here would be too boot into download mode and go from there either via Heimdall or Odin. Unfortunately neither are doing anything. The phone doesn't get recognized in either program. "Maybe it is your cable or your computer" I wish that were so but when hooking up my Fascinate no issues with either program. I have tried DaleV's methods for both programs and nothing. I have even tried getting the phone into download mode via the charging plug to see if there was any difference with that and no. I don't want to say it but i think the phone is completely BRICKED. So if any of you good forums members have any advice it would be greatly appreciate it.

I had this problem yesterday too. You have to flash build 1 not 2 then flash 6.1 again. It worked for me. Flashing 1 might give you an endless boot loop with your animation, but that's normal. Just pull battery and 3 finger into recovery and flash 6.1

3 fingering into recovery CAUSES a bootloop like the OP is describing.
He can try it out, but I'd be surprised if it did anything but bootloop. If I'm reading his post right, he can get into download mode, but the device won't be recognized by the computer? I'd recommend odin and starting fresh, but if the devices isn't being recognized then I don't know. Maybe look into getting/making yourself a jig? Although I thought those were more useful for getting INTO download mode..
I'm not sure, even though you said you can plug your phone in and it'll work, I'd just be trying different ports/cables and crossing my fingers

NO DICE. The phone is pretty fudged from what it looks like. I tried to install Build 2 but just the same thing. It boots into recovery and nothing.

Yup went ahead and tried doing that as well. No other combination of cables does anything. So i believe the consensus here is.....Bricked Not cool but the upgrade deal that best buy is offering makes the Galaxy Nexus all that much more tempting.

I'm wondering how he got it bricked in the first place? If he flashed the correct kernel for his device I don't see how that could happen. Did he flash the wrong kernel for his device? If he did, maybe the you would need the drivers for that phone? Just kinda thinking out loud, that's pure speculation. Did he flash the kernel and then mess with overclocking or anything?
One other thing I've heard of that you might look into is the "unbrickable mod", but as I understand it, it's done at the hardware level so if you're not fairly comfortable with the idea of taking your phone apart I don't know if that would be an option.

Is it possible to flash CWM through ICS Recovery, then say ..stock rom, check if computer can pickup the phone and go from there??

My apologies i forgot to mention that. The funny thing is when we first got our phones he bricked his by setting setCPU all the way up LMAO. So i think this was the time of superclean on eclair so we didn't even have any over clock kernels or anything of that nature. This time around he tried doing the same idk what method though. He tried going to 1.4ghz but i don't believe that he properly messed with the multiplier or voltages.Unbrickable mod would be awesome but it would have had to have happened before this instance i believe. Even at that though given the situation i don't think it would have helped.

This seems like a good idea but just speaking to him a couple minutes ago he phone is no longer going into recovery either. If it was it may have been worth a shot but I doubt it would have done anything. I think due to his tinkering he has had a hardware failure at this point.

Ah, that makes sense, and yes I'd say you're right about the unbrickable mod. Not sure that it would've been able to help in this case where the hardware was pushed beyond its limits. Just because you have the option to max out the OC settings doesn't mean it's something you should do, lol! He might have been better off with the stock ICS kernel (which doesn't include the ability to OC).

I'm sad to hear this. I've been searching the Internet for people with the same issue. The same thing happened to mine except I have a captivate. I flashed the new ICY Glitch kernel from CWM and my phone buttons immediately went hay-wire, where all buttons performed the "back" function. So I pulled the battery and rebooted to find only a bootloop. The button recoveries nor download modes will work, so I used my jig I made to get into download mode, and just as you said no computers nor odin will recognize the device. Nothing, nada. Although it will charge the phone as it will show the big battery icon charging.. go figure. I wonder if the Glitch guys know about this yet. I would post but I'm still a noob so don't have enough posts or whatever you have to have.

First, if you're on a captivate, then you could probably be better helped in those forums.
Second, can you not use the volume and power buttons to navigate in recovery?

Believe me ive checked those forums, that is why I am here, looking for any glimmer of hope. No the button recoveries wont work, ive tried a zillion times a zillion different ways.

[Q] Rooted I717, constant reboots, no recovery, flashing stock ROM not working

I changed from an iPhone 4 in May to the Samsung Note. On my iPhone I would immediately jailbreak and install MyWi. In my research to do the same on the note I ran across a rooting tutorial for my device and followed the instructions http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-note-att-i717-root-without-increasing-flash-counter-61325/ (I am not positive, but I feel confident this is the one I followed). I installed Superuser and Titanium Backup, did a backup of ATT connection manager, then removed it. Tethering worked like a charm. This has worked and I had no issues until Friday June 14th.
On Friday, everytime I opened an app on my phone I would get a Force Close. I restarted the phone and watched as it repeatedly happened after every cycle. Believing that installing Droid VNC Server was the issue, the last app I had installed, I removed it successfully and included others I didn’t use. Upon reboot, I noticed the notification of App Updates and a missed call. Checked the application list and noticed that all of the apps I had just removed were still there. I have a ton of pics and videos and thought that I should back them up immediately before I deleted them, prepared for the worst. I was able to do that. I deleted them all, nothing in the gallery. When the phone crapped out again and rebooted, all apps and all pictures back.
I formatted the USB Storage, seemed to delete nothing and also showed the same amount of used space as before.
Time for a restore. I know now that the recovery partition is gone and so a Wipe/reset is fruitless. No problem. I know how to flash the rom. I used this method with Odin. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506330
Everything seemed to work successfully, but upon reboot I get the same app updates notification and the same missed call notification. The same frozen state my phone was in when the issue started on Friday. WTH!
I have everything backed up. How do I get back to stock? I could care less about the counter. I just want my phone to be usable again.

did you try wiping Catche and Dav?
Wipe Catch > Wife Davlik > Fix Permision, then reboot ..
see what happens ..
Not a noob, but here is where i am lost
I booted in to recovery, chose to Wipe/Erase . I see no option to Wipe Davlik except for in SuperUser and there it is a paid option, not sure where to find Fix Permission and then reboot?
I am assuming these are all options for CWM. I attempted to put CWM on an SD card last night and install from ZIP, but Recovery does not seem to see the SD card.
Are these options that are available for CWM, if so I will push through until I get it to work, but I have had no luck to this point.

I have attempted to Flash ROMs I don't desire just to move forward. They all flash and pass in Odin but on reboot I still have my default screen. Unfortunately, I want to go back to stock. I have done plenty of research and need something more to push on to the next thing. I am looking at phone and there is not an Advanced option in recovery. I have read there are options in CWM but I am looking at what I believe is the stock recovery options.

So, maybe I am a newb. I have followed the instructions to install CWM on my device and it even says it was successful. I am doing it from ODIN. See the file I downloaded here. Says it was successful but holding the volume up and then power button. NO CWM.
I am truly frustrated but I want my phone back. Can someone link me to the stupid people posts so I can get my phone working again?

You now have a custom recovery(according to Odin). The problem is, you're doing the wrong key combo as stated above. You can also go to the market and grab FJ's power tool. You can boot into recovery directly from the app. Good luck.

Still having issues. Here is the deal.
I have the phone in Download mode
https://www.dropbox.com/s/dnk6ekjqp9vddev/2012-06-19 19.40.01.jpg
I load the CWM Recovery in the PDA box. Start the flash, get a pass. All looks good to me.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/5q4hayf35mm26wr/odin-success.PNG
I immediately attempt to access CWM Recovery by holding the power, vol+ and vol- and still get the default recovery
https://www.dropbox.com/s/d176blydonlvrlu/2012-06-19 20.13.42.jpg
I am so confused as to what I am doing wrong.
Unfortunately those pics aren't loading for me. Try again with the pic of recovery and the file you're flashing. Thanks. If you still have stock recovery then maybe that's what you're flashing in error.
Try volume up + down and power button. When phone vibrates, release power button but keep holding volume buttons until you are in cwm.
I would use Odin to flash cwm touch recovery from pda, then load a rom via cwm. Using that method you don't even need to root because it's all done at bootloader level and root is built in to the custom rom you flash

Help Please! Phone won't turn on

First off, my apologies if this is in the wrong forum. Mods, you may move this thread if need be. I was just shown this website about two weeks ago by a friend and have only been a lurker since. So I apologize if my first post is one needing assistance.
First off, I am not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to doing all this reboot, recovery, root, etc. But I can usually figure stuff out. I have researched how to do all this stuff over the last to weeks learning how to do all this. Let it be known that I was already rooted with siyah 3.4.2? kernel with superuser, CWM, and had ROM Manager downloaded. Last night I had finally decided to try and download a custom rom (AOKP), and I went through ROM Manager to try and reboot into recovery mode..the phone went dead. I have not been able to turn the phone on since last night. I have tried taking the battery out, trying to hold down volume buttons/power button to get into download mode, etc..But nothing is happening. When I power on, I can see the screen where it says "Samsung Galaxy SII" w/ the triangle, but then the screen goes black and nothing. In a dark room, you can see that the screen looks like it's trying to fire by flickering, but again...nothing. Sorry if this has been alot of reading, but I just want to be as thorough as I can. If anybody can tell me what went wrong, and how it might be fixed, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks

Remove the battery and replace it. hold the up/down volume and power button. The screen should light up. Continue to hold them until the phone goes into recovery mode. The phone should turn on and off a couple times before it enters recovery. Then wipe the data and caches. Hopefully at the point the phone will work. If it wont work you could always try to buy a download jig. They are only a couple dollars and can easily be found with a search.

That usually cause more trouble than it's worth. Espeically for a noob. I had been in that situation back when I first start doing it. First thing I used was CWM and I had the same/similar problem.
That is why everyone here always mentioned to not use CWM.

@BigCohiba,
You need to get into download mode. You should be able to do that without using a jig. With the phone off, but with the battery still in the phone, hold down vol- and vol+ (but not power) while you plug in the usb cable.
The following instructions given by fakhri should also work:

After that, flashing siyah kernel alone may be enough to allow the phone to boot, but you may have trouble finding a Siyah in Odin flashable tar format.
...or, flash straight stock UCKH7, or flash stock plus root UCKH7. You can find download links for those in one or the other of the guides linked in my signature.
Please let us know your success or problems as you proceed.

Understood. I must have missed understood the comment. That is correct, CWM Recovery is builded into the custom ROMs.

@BigCohiba,
You need to get into download mode.

These two things worked. Phone is back to stock and working. Thanks to everybody for helping very much!

previously rooted phone won't load past splash screen

I've had the phone for around 6 months, rooted it back in Feb or something.
Started having problems freezing and restarting a few weeks ago, has probably only done this only a handful of times, until this morning...
Phone locked up and restarted then started loading the splash screen directly after the samsung galaxy sII screen and got stuck in an infinite cycle. It doesn't vibrate when turned on and no buttons work the only means of turning it off when in the loop is pulling the battery.
I've searched this topic but all I can find are ppl that have un-rooted phones or ppl that just rooted their phones. I can get into recovery mode but don't know what to do after that... help!

I honestly don't know, I saw the update awhile back and wasn't on wifi so I didn't update it. Then heard on the offroad forum that I frequent that some were having problems with the update so I never actively seeked it out to install it and never saw it pop up again but I do update often so it automatically updates then most likely. go into CWM, wipe cache and dalvik cache(under advanced) and fix permissions, also under andvanced i believe.
If that doesnt help, might have to wipe data.

The only thing left to try would be to use factory reset in cwm. If that doesnt work then youll have to flash new firmware

I would suggest you try flashing stock UCKH7 to see if that will clear the boot loop. To do that, follow the guide in my signature. If you want to try straight stock, use the guide to return the phone to the store. If you want to try stock plus root, use the guide about flashing custom binaries. The download link for the firmware you need is contained within the guides. After you flash, see if the phone boots. If it still loops, enter 3e recovery and do a wipe data/factory reset. If it still loops, or not, let us know the results. Doing the above will be safe since the firmwares contain no bootloaders, and also are free of the eMMC superbrick bug.

[Q] CWM for Atrix 2.3.6

Hello, I am new to this whole smartphone world, and I have no idea what to do next.
I asked in multiple forums why my new battery's life sucks even after calibration, which after reboot the battery goes from 65% to 98%, everytime.
So I was told to get CWM for my atrix, and last time I did, I almost got bricked. I got this error:
SVF:105.1:2
Failed to boot 0X1000 -- I always thought this was a HARD BRICK
I have root access and unlocked, using T-Mobile, and everytime it boots it says "unlocked" at the top during the Motorola logo.
So what are my steps to get CWM on the phone (for 2.3.6), and will my phone still work with t mobile, and will my battery not die in 20 minutes of reading text?
You can install CWM, either through fastboot (recommended) or through ROM Manager (personally I dislike it). However I don't think any of this is likely to fix your battery issues. Unless you're seriously exaggerating, your battery draining so fast could indicate some hardware problems. Might just be time for a new battery.

Oh I see. Could you provide me a link, can't seem to find one for 2.3.6.
Also the battery is BRAND NEW, got it yesterday in the mail, and the phone is new as well.
Hm, then I guess it shouldn't be a hardware failure.
CWM has nothing to do with your OS or its version. Just flash whichever you want (the latest version would make the most sense).

Ah okay, would I get this error again:
SVF:105.1:2
Failed to boot 0X1000
Also flashing CWM doesn't delete stuff right? Only flashing custom ROMS does?
I don't know if you'll get that error or not, but that error is easily solvable. Yes, like I said, CWM has nothing to do with your normal system unless you're flashing the system through CWM.
Please read this thread, most things are already explained there.

Okay! well how do I install CWM, nobody explains anything. I can;t find any steps anywhere. There are some, but say just flash it. Well what commands do I put in cmd? Idk what to do...
----------------
Okay I installed CWM recovery, but when I go into "android recovery" I don;t see all the the options. I mean I get past the triangle, but I only see four options.
Did I get cwm recovery or not? I followed the steps installing the .img file.
What options do you see? And what exactly did you install, and from where?
It's possible you installed some older version. Personally I use RomRacer's recovery which is based on CWM, pretty happy with it.

I used the link you provided the second post shows how to load fastboot, and the third post show how to flash the recovery, and I used this: the latest CWM recovery from here, which is the newest.
I see reboot at the top
"wipe data/factory reset"
wipe cache partition
and wipe baseband data
can I follow this? I did this before and bricked the phone
Hm. Not sure why you'd want to follow some random tutorials on random sites. Everything you need is available on this forum alone.
Also, no idea why you see only those options, there should be much more AFAIK...
I'm using this recovery, it might be old but it's rock-solid, reliable and dependable. Might want to try with that one. The procedure is the same, just with a different IMG file.

GOT IT!!!! Finally! my computer was acting weird and I guess the moto drivers didn't install properly. After reboot and new drivers on comp, it flashed fine and I am in cwm recovery. I flashed this: 0408_1720-signed.apk
so I guess from there could I clear the battery stats, after 100% charge, then let die and charge again off?

Yes, it's worth a shot. Won't do any harm and it might just fix your problem.
MY GOD PROBLEM AFTER PROBLEM!!!
So after installing cwm recovery. I wanted to fix the crappy battery, so I let the phone on until it died, and connected the phone to the wall charger, and it boots into CWM automatically.
I don't even see the charge screen. After hitting reboot, the phone than boots into the normal android OS.
SO HOW can I charge the phone when it's off, without having it turn on by itself?
---
Okay WTH! Now it boots fine, but won't get into CWM recovery. Even selecting android recovery takes me to the crappy stock recovery with the four options only. WTH is wrong?
I am going back to $10 phones.
Good bye.
Hmm, I don't know... Either you're doing something wrong (no idea what) or your device is borked in some way.
Maybe someone else can chime in...

Rooted S2 months ago, acting up now and won't boot (regular and recovery mode).

Preface: I have zero knowledge of android development and rooted my phone myself.
Some months ago I decided to root my S2 i777.
I followed the instructions on this page word for word: http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-root/how-to-root-ics-on-att-galaxy-s2-sgh-i777/
I decided to do it after my stock was getting laggy and was randomly shutting down and throwing the battery calibration off. After reading the good feedback in that page's comment section. I gave it a go.
Everything went fine and my now-rooted S2 was no longer randomly shutting down!
I noticed though that the caera and video playback stopped aorking. As in, the screen would be black. I could still take pictures, but I would knot know what it looked like until it was taken. That didn't bother me much though since not having the phone shut down random;y several times throughout the day anymore was more than worth that unfortunate loss.
Today, though. It started randomly cutting to black and boothing constantly. My battery calibration was all over the place. It has restarted at least 10 times today.
I talked to my friend that originally conviced me to root and he said to do a factory reset. I backed up my contacts on my SIM and did so.
Now it won't boot past the screen that reads "Samsung Galaxy SII GT-1900" with the yellow warning triangle underneath (this is wha tthe boot screen changed to after rooting.).
I can not boot into recovery mode via keeping all three side buttons pressed.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

@GPS_Music,
If you still want a rooted phone, then rather than flashing straight stock, why don't you save yourself a step, and flash Stock plus root. The links in my signature give pretty clear directions.
Since you originally rooted with files from GalaxyS2Root, the problems you have experienced are very likely related to the quality of those files. If you avoid GalaxyS2Root in the future, and use files from these forums, you will have a much better experience.
Since you want JellyBean, after you flash stock plus root, you could follow my guide to install a custom kernel which contains ClockworkMod Recovery, and then flash one of the fine JellyBean firmwares available in the development section.
If you have any questions as you go along, feel free to ask them in this thread.

Thank you for your reply.
The main reason I opted to use that site was because of the ese of the steps, as well as the pictures. I wanted a method that was clear so I would minimize me messing up. I will look into your signature links now, but I should note that I don't recall stating I wanted JellyBean...my phone is 4.0.x last I recall, which is ICS.
Hey creepyncrawly,
I was able to download the material from your signature yesterday, but unfortunately my battery wa too low to safely put into downlaod mode (according to the phone, which read something along the lines of "Battery low! Can not download!" in red).
I tried charging it before I went to bed but it would not go past the screen that shows the battery indicator with a loading circle int he middle (which was not rotating). It would then go black and the screen would "retsart" constantly to black screens (I did not notice this until I turned off my room lights, the screen was very black but I could tell it was turning on and off).
I am trying again now to charge it but I seem to be having the same issue. I will leave it plugged to my charger for an hour and then try to turn it on.

It sounds to me like you're trying to put it in Recovery Mode. Download mode is something completely different. Here's what you can do:
- Take the battery out.
- Leave it out.
- Hold down Vol Up and Vol Down.
- While they are pressed, plug the phone into your computer.
This should place you in Download Mode. Then used Odin to flash the Stock Plus Root package.

I think you mean Gingerbread 2.3.4. Also, if you're rooted, never attempt an official update.
You can do what you want, but if you want my personal opinion, I would suggest a custom rom. If you think ICS was fast, wait until you try Jellybean. If you want a Touchwiz rom, probably go with ShoStock 3. If you want a more stock Nexus-ish flavor, give Task's AOKP a try. Just remember to follow each thread's installation instructions exactly, which means a full wipe.

Either of the roms I mentioned will give you a smooth interface and be reliable. And no, you can get to the instructions yourself. I'll give you a hint; the ShoStock 3 instructions are in the ShoStock 3 thread, and the AOKP instructions are in the AOKP thread.
It's pretty clear you don't really know what you're doing, so I'll spoonfeed you a little more. You're not going to use Odin to flash the rom. You're going to use CWM Recovery. You can get CWM Recovery by flashing a kernel that includes it. Here's what you do:
1. Download rom of choice and save it to your SD card.
2. Install Mobile Odin Lite.
3. Download Siyah kernel.
4. Extract the zimage and save it to your SD card.
5. Use Mobile Odin to flash the zimage.
6. Boot into Recovery.
7. Wipe Data, Cache, and Dalvik Cache.
8. While still in Recovery, install rom.
9. Reboot.
Most people will not (and should not) be as helpful as I just was. In the future, read read read. Read the stickies, search for threads that deal with issues you may be having, and read them. All the info you need is already out there, you just need to learn how to find it.
