[APP][CM9]Evernote/Kindle UI for ICS - Nook Color Themes and Apps

If you're running the latest ICS nightly (since 2012-02-02, I think) and use Evernote, you've probably noticed that it not longer displays the tablet UI.
For some reason, the Evernote app calculates width of the screen is 4.xxxx instead of the 7.xxxx required for displaying the tablet UI.
I've modified the APK to ignore the calculation so that the app displays the tablet UI.
I hope you like it.
com.evernote-2.apk
UPDATE: Some people have asked me to look at the Kindle app too.
Looking into it, but it is a little more complex ...

If you already have Evernote, you'll need to uninstall it before trying to install this one.
Tip:
Copy this to /system/app to ensure you'll never lose it ...
That way if you update the app thru the market and lose the tablet UI you can uninstall updates

Thanks a lot for this. Tablet UI is lot better. really missed it with recent nightly....I even tried changing DPI..still no use. Your fix is really good . Thanks a lot..

No problem; glad I could help!

Hey, cool! I read about this in your posts on the user thread. How did you do this? I don't know enough to diagnose it, but I would be interested in digging through a couple different apps in this manner.

Do you have access to the block of code you changed or are you dis-assembling this to make this work? This is a common problem across a few google apps as well (chrome, docs, etc) Just wondering if you had any insight into the root problem.

Yeah, that's why I want to know as well. I saw people asking you to take a look at the Kindle app over in the development thread, and I figure instead of buying us dinner you could just teach us how to fish, you know?

Yeah I disassembled the apk.
Essentially, I searched the decompiled files for the word "tablet" ... When I thought I found what I was looking for, I compared it against the logcat.

Did you run it through a baksmali to get the classout and go from there?

Yeah I used apktools found here:

OMG can you do this for aldiko too?

Hey guys (and probably gals too) I'm sorry I haven't posted anything yet ... Work's been kinda hectic ...it appears I have some time this weekend, so I'll look into the kindle app ... If I have time (if the kindle is easy), I'll look at aldiko too
Since I don't really use these apps .. screenshots would help, I realize they'd be doctored and/or annotated

Can this be done for Opera Mobile Browser also ? Love it !! Many thanks Kem - El !

this would be great. http://blog.the-ebook-reader.com/2011/12/07/aldiko-ebook-reader-app-updated-for-tablets/ The movie on this page shows what it would look like in tablet mode. When you install it on your nook you should be able to see the phone mode.
you can also download the apk from their own website: www.aldiko.com whithout the market.

FWIW the official Kindle app update that just showed up on my GN claims that it's fixed margins and spacing on tablets. I'm not near my Nook, but let us know if it works.

Yeah unfortunately it's not fixed on the Nook Color or the Touchpad.
I'll upload a picture of the Kindle app and describe the differences of tablet mode and phone mode on the Nook. I am very interested in having my NC as well as my TP displaying the Kindle app correctly for landscape mode. Without the split screen with two pages displayed in landscape mode, it's a long traverse to read a line across the entire length if the tablet. Lol
If you still have time to look into this, I would be very grateful. No worries either way.
Thanks for the Evernote fix!

It is fixed in CM9 on the nook color. I have tested it. The margins and line spacing is much improved. You still cannot adjust them, but it is very readable. Make sure you have the very latest version.

Hi leapinar,
I am on the latest version and the Kindle app is not in tablet mode at 160 dpi. I do see the changes you mentioned. However just to be clear, when you hold your Nook in landscape orientation does the screen split and have two side by side pages like an open book?
Edit: I disassembled the apk, but it is not clear at all to me what is triggering the tablet view/install. I tried a few edits and reassembled the apk and nadda.. At this point I am just blindly throwing darts..

Guys,
Sorry about disappearing ... I was out of town for work for a couple of days and busy on a new work project.
I've looked at the new version of the Kindle app, and yes the margins are better, but having the ability to adjust them like the phone would be ideal.
I'm looking at the code to see if I can just swap out the tablet reader view with the phone view, giving us the phone menu options.
A little slow going ...

Would just like to second this - the app is actually semi-unusable without it being switched because there's no way to access 'menu' (no hard button on the NC and no softbutton shows up in the app).

No google voice on Flyer

Got my Flyer yesterday and I'm having issues finding Google voice in the market. I was interested to see if others are seeing this same thing. I have the US Wifi only Flyer.
Yep, not there. Gues the thought is that with lacking a 3G radio, it is not wanted/needed.
its easy to install it, back it up on your phone "android phone" then email it to your self then install it. works great on my flyer.

Yea side loaded the app but I wanted to see if others saw this too. It just seems strange.
Like I said in a post before this 2.3 is in limbo for a tablet OS, between froyo and honey-comb apps. cant see certain apps on both sides on the market to download.
I have been side loading some of the tablet apps from the zoom, icona and asus trans forums that you cant get on the market because the spread out in duel panes in landscape mode as some tablet apps should.

Like which ones? I was hoping to find the CNN or pulse apps that have been shown off on the xoom.
Blaw most apps detect that the flyer is not using honeycomb so they revert to froyo installed devices screen size, which does not use double pain landscape mode or "optimized for tablet screens" this sucks till honeycom comes out for the flyer.

I think it's actually limiting apps based on location. I think the Market thinks we're in Europe.

Awesome! Downloaded the apk from 2nd link and worked on my Flyer like a charm, thanks!

Almost all working except...

I have almost everything working now on my rooted tablet with the GoLauncher.
After a lot of effort, I got the SlideIT keyboard installed and working.
But, The Nook Reader (from the Market) does not work. I can access a reader that works on my B&N books by going through Library, opening the book, and then using "Reader" to read it. But I can't find "Reader" in the app list to make a direct access to it on my GoLauncher desktop. Reader.apk is also in /system/app. Is it the Nook viewer? When I start that, it does nothing.
Similarly, QuickOffice_Viewer.apk is installed in /system/app, but I don't see it in my app list.
Is there a way to turn on wifi location services?
Also, in the Android Market, many many apps are listed as being incompatible with the Nook Tablet, even though they work on my Color Nook (albeit with CyanogenMod). For example, the free angry birds, which works perfectly on the NT when I moved it from my NC. And I had to get Evernote and LastPass from the B&N market.
Finally, the Nook Tablet suffers from the same anaemic maximum volume as the NC did. Nook Color Tweaks fixes the problem on my NC, but does not work on the NT. Does anyone know some other way to goose up the volume settings? The inbuilt controls are maximized.
Personally I havent found a way to get reader to work other than the way described by yourself.
As far as I know the "incompatible" apps thing is due to the ppi being 169 rather than a more common 160. Rather than changing it, I have just found it easier to copy things from one of my other android devices. Or you can see if the items in question are in the Amazon Appstore.
Currently the only way I know of to get the volume up is with a paid app...that I cant seem to recall the name of. If you search the forums for it I'm sure you'll find it.

Thats the app i was talking about, thought it was paid only. Guess I've been proven wrong on that front, which is a good thing .
The Android Market says Volume+ is not compatible with The NT. I installed it my NC, but I can't find where the apk is installed, to grab it.
What is it called, and where is it installed to?

Quickoffice Pro HD

Has anybody been able to get Quickoffice Pro HD to install on their prime? It looks like the Amazon app store will allow it to be installed but I'd rather install it from the Android app store, I heard that the version on Amazon doesn't get updated as frequently. I tried searching but nothing came up, hopefully this hasn't been addressed already. Thanks!

It is not available for ICS. I was little disappointed when I found out after I updated my Captivate however Polaris seems to work good so far and should hold you over until they update it.
Yeah polaris doesn't seem too bad, I was hoping to get quickoffice before I go back to school on Monday but polaris will have to do until they make it available. Good to know that it is working though. Excited to use this thing to take notes in class!

hey guys,
i just got my prime yesterday and i've tried opening multiple docs (saved and new) in quick office pro hd (from amazon) and it showed the text as white regardless of the document. i could select, cut, copy, paste, even change the format of the text, but i still couldn't see it in quickoffice. i saved a new doc in QOP HD and opened it in polaris. the text was there - i just couldn't see it in QOP HD.
Could this be an ICS compatibility issue?
Thanks guys!
Surprising the lack of support for ICS from them. This is the only program that I know of that will open and work with macro excel files.
Bought QOPHD directly from the website - Has worked fine since (It can also open the infamous Polaris corrupted saved files)
ps: you need to specify tf101 instead of prime when buying from their website

You have it working with ice cream sandwich?
Curious why it is not on the Market supporting the Prime if it works on it. I won't buy unless it is on the Market or Amazon.
I actually bought my copy from Amazon and it works fine on the Prime.
I got it from the Amazon Marketplace when they had it as a Free App of the Day. It's worked flawlessly for me on my Prime so far.

Yeah, seems to work well these last few weeks. One of the best office apps on android too.
IT DOES NOT WORK 100%
Downloaded after paying $20, and it works fine for most programs, however several macro excel docs have errors and I get an insufficient memory error before crashing. Sometimes even a failure to render graphics error. All with macro files. Before someone says something smart I have 160gb total.
I got it a few weeks back via the Amazon App Market, but I'm not too impressed with the app.
Obviously I can't use basic Window's Shortcut keys for highlighting text and the familiar, but that's the OS' fault, not the app.
It doesn't have spell-check, at least not as far as I know, so it was quite annoying when I found out I had about 6 spelling errors in my speech outline after I re-opened it on actual MS Word.
Doesn't have the ability to change margins, again at least not as far as I know, so it's not exactly the smartest app to use for typing a formal document. This also applies with being able to change the spacing size and what not.
There was a few other minor things that annoyed me, but I can't quite remember them.
Other than those flaws, the app works as intended and is useable. I hope they add some key features that's missing compared to the actual MS Word program.

Hey, just searched for the problem that I was having and I see that you have the same problem, the white text. I figured it out on my HP Touchpad running ICS. Its the Force Hardware Acceleration that is causing the problem. The instant you uncheck that option under developer settings the text shows up perfectly.

[request]Original Nook shortcut bar and nook apps on CM7

Does anyone have the original Nook app bar (the one that pops up when u hit the N button) running on CM7 and the original Library/Friends/Shop/etc apps? or know where to get them? or how to get that bar running on CM7?
I don't think you can. If you like that stuff it might be best to stay with stock.

Reading a bit more, seems they may be system apps. When TB backup'd i didn't realize that they didn't back up, they showed up as app icons in the app tray so figured they would be just apps. I didn't do a system backup. may restore pre-cm7 backup and see if i can't get them back'd up or pulled out or something. Of course there are alternatives to the reader, but I like the nook friends, and the reader. The nook app is pretty good, and I switched to CoolReader...but I guess I feel that it would be nice to have my cake AND eat it too...hehehe. It was/is a nifty little app bar.
It would be great to know if the stock youtube app with HD support would work as well.

The menu you are referring to its the file home.apk. That is the original home launcher on the book tablet. You can back it up with titanium backup but it will act glitchy since you cannot restore the reader app correctly with titanium backup. I guess it would be possible to save the files and copy them over and install them when cm7 is released with the sd card fix. I did install nook app for Android and was able to access my library with no problem.
Any reason why you would want the Stock Reader? I mean FBreader does just fine for reading books on I don't see the point of having the stock reader unless you just want the Book icon on the status bar.

I like the nook friends, the reader app, and the shop. I'm using coolreader which I like now though..lol. the scroll app bar at the bottom was nice too. Also, when showing the nook to friends who are considering it's its nice to be able to show them a before and after..easier to explain than.."this isn't actually what u will get out of the box"..showing them what it will look like on the UI side of things is better..feel like I'm misrepresenting by showing them cm7 instead..lol..so if I had the actual apps and home that I could switch to,it would make it better for a selling point..but if not possible..I wont loose sleep over it

This thread is probably dead but
If you made cwm backup b4 cm7 as suggested look in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/*******
******* is the name given to the backup you made of your stock nt. Look at system.ext4.tar and you will find your /system/apps/
if you find you also need the data for them to operate correctly look in data.ext4.tar.
7zip will open these on your pc.
good luck
any luck on this? I too prefer the snappiness and overall feel/performance of CM7, but miss the stock reader app.
Err. Have you tried simply using GoLauncher, and then having it set to open up the "dock" when you press the n button? 'cause then you can just use the background image and icons provided by framework-res.apk, and make it look like stock menu and whatnot. I've done it before with golauncher so it should work.
I second the kids read me books. My wife made me go back to the stock rom as she didn't like the fact we bought 10 or so read me books that did not work with the regular Android Nook version. I'll give it a try and let you know if it works.

@Scotlac. I'm pretty sure that's not what the op was referring to. He is looking for the feature they advertised at Google I/O where each tab would show up as its own card in the multitasking view. As near as I can tell, that feature has not yet come to fruition, and hopefully is just around the corner.
Ahh, I was not aware of that feature. Thanks Wolf!
I believe it is only enabled for phones.
On a tablet you have direct access to all open tabs in chrome anyway. I think they tested it and thought that it doesnt make things faster or easier.
Let's say you have opened up 10 pages. You would see 10 added entries to your recent apps mixed with all other apps you would take some time to find a specific chrome tab. Just hitting the one chrome instance you see in the current implementatiton and then in chrome select the correct tab seems easier to me. On a phone where you can not see the tabs in chrome without a click it's differernt.
But yes, they should have made it an option.
I read somewhere on g+ that is a setting that had to be enabled.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
Nope, I don't think its enabled for phones either. I have yet to see it with any build I've tried on my Nexus 5.
The chrome build on my tablet will will give you the option if you set the LCD density to the same as the nexus 5. I'm not a fan of this feature, but I'm sure someone can hack chrome to make this work. Just needs to be decompiled and forced to phone mode. With DPI like this tablet is unusable(well, usable just horrible looking) I just wanted to see if the functionality was in chrome and it is. I don't have time to mess with it right now, maybe in the future if no one gets on it.
(This is on my nexus 9)
yea i guess its not enabled for tablets. i have it on my nexus 5 running latest lollipop preview and its amazing. i think they should have it integrated into tablets AND still let you see the tabs one BOTH tablets and phones. I loved the system of pulling down in chrome to see tabs, and i think this new system could accompany it nicely. i dont see why they got rid of one for the other, and tablets are just stuck with old fashion tabs
